Hello all!
I'm rather new here and to collecting in general. For the past two years whenever i see a new G4 fluttershy i snatch it and just leave her in the package.
Now my question is, do you leave yours in the package or do you take them out? I know to keep the price up would be to keep her sealed, but what do most do? I look to start expanding my collection and maybe even start completing sets eventually. Is it really hard to find the more rare G4s still in its package? How big of a task is it really to complete collections?
-
I pick and choose which I open and leave in box. Like, my exclusives for example are all in box. Not because I plan on getting rid of them in the future, but just for some reason it doesn't feel right opening them. Such as Rainbow Dash Shadowbolt, Zecora, SDCC Muffin pony...
-
if you can get 2 ,one to open and one to keep mib that would be the best , on my first year I opened everything I was getting , but then I started leaving some in their boxes and buying a second one of the ones I had opened to also keep mib ,mostly I kinda started doing that because of the buy 1 get one 50 % off sales:) so sometimes I get them right away when they get released and if they are later on sale I get them again and open them , some of them I never open, and only get one like the pinkie's boutique stuff :)
I recently opened my second CMC set after I got it with a coupon at target , also the Favorites Set and Masquerade ponies after a sale at TRU :)
If you are going after the old releases from 2010-2012, there are still around but just be patient, there are a lot overpriced ponies on e bay ,but do expect to pay a bit more than retail, I got a new RD and TS fashion Style recently and it was a long wait until one of each came out at a decent price .
I also went after the MIB G4's that I had opened before and bought a second one to keep MIB
Blossomforth and Flitterheart were the most expensive ones 30 plus dllrs ,and they are even going for higher now :(
I do find some old releases at Ross for half their original price sometimes though,so it is nice sometimes to find them that cheap .

i usually keep them outside the box, though i do keep the boxes in a safe place if i decide to sell later. however, with ponies like zecora and shadow bolt dash, i kept them in the box, but the package is open so i can take them out if i want too. however, FS :muffin: Pony will stay snug and sealed tight in her pretty box.
-
I keep mine all in boxes unless I get doubles OR they have a badly damaged box...That's why I opened my EG Doll Rarity
-
I open them. I collect ponies, not cardboard and plastic. ;)
-
I usually try to buy two if I can so I can take one out xP If I can't I just keep it in the box then!
-
hard to get ones leave MIB
I have my TRU exclusives MIB and my SDCC too
now if you can get 2 open 1 otherwise keep MIB and look for loose ones to toy with 2nd hand or in yard sales
-
Almost all my items are CIB, unless they're part of a larger set (but I collect Muffin pony so most of hers are exclusive/limited). But for example, her future blindbag and her current brushable are going to / are out of the box. My Snuggle Bubble is out of the plastic and when I get the flocked one in today, she's going in a plastic case because that thing will attract cat hair like no tomorrow. :p
-
If they are older G4's I'd say no. They might JUST fetch something on ebay if you, say, listed a 2010 Fluttershy.
I kept my Zecora's box when I got her last August, so there's no shame in keeping boxes as memories.
-
I've opened all my G4s except Diamond Rose. I found her earlier this year and had been looking for her for months so I want to keep her "special"....even though she has a massive black smudge on her nose >.< Thanks, Hasbro QC.
I have a handful still in boxes because I don't actually have space for them at the moment and my other ponies' hair has suddenly frizzed up so I'd rather keep them mint until I have a place to put them so I've not got a tonne of untangling to do.
-
I set them free.
-
I open all my toys. My personal point of view is that there is no point in collecting/buying toys, if you don't open them.
-
I've been collecting for about 8 months now :) Much like yourself I was keeping everything MIB, I didn't want to open them. Then I had my birthday 3 weeks ago and that's when I decided to start opening a lot of items. For me it has more to do with display space as opposed to anything else.
I was running out of room to hang all of the MIB/MIP items, So what I decided was that I would keep all of my regular brushables (singles) MIB, anything that has 2 or more ponies or a ton of accessories was opened. I put all of the accessories in baggies and put them in a dresser drawer, now the majority of the pony collection is out of package and on display :)
I think it looks better now that most of them are out of their boxes :)
It really is up to you, you have to do whatever you are most comfortable with ^.^

I de-box almost all of mine- my international exclusives, older ponies (g3 and older), some of the ones I know are just rare and doubles stay in box. Everyone else gets freed. There are a few reasons- first one is space, I have a lot of ponies, enough that they now need there own room. With that many I need to make the best use of all my shelf space, because I hate boxing them up and storing them, if I own them I want them out where I can enjoy them. The second reason is enjoyment- de-boxing a new pony is fun! I like styling there hair and being able to pick them up and show them off. Taking photos of them or dressing them up is a blast! Also I don't plan to sell mine- if I get an upgrade I might sell one who is less perfect but over all selling for a profit is not a goal with my collection.
I think you should consider how you enjoy your collection- do you like the box art? and the way to boxes look on display? Do you have space for all of them? It is a bit easier to keep boxes clean and free of dust. or do you like styling hair and playing around with them? Are you planing to sell them in the future?
-
Personally, I open mine, mostly because having them in the box would drive me nutty. I love brushing their hair and arranging them and all. For me, the enjoyment of having ponies comes from having them out of the box. I can see why someone would want to keep them in, though, because they do look nice in the boxes. What I do is I keep the box(flattened)/ back card so I have it. I also do this with Breyer horses. I have no intentions of selling my ponies or my Breyers any time soon, but having the box or back card does help their value. Any way, I really like the box art. I think the Equestria Girls boxes are especially pretty.
-
I do both. I'm a MOC collector so most of mine are in the box. For the ones I really love I usually buy a second to debox. I have found the majority of my loose G4 collection at yard sales and flea markets. It really comes down to what kind of a collector you are. I personally love walking in to a room full of MOC ponies!
-
I just couldn't resist opening G3s and G4s :) I love the thrill of opening a pony and grooming it!
-
I tend to open G3s and G4s unless they are exclusives/con ponies or part of a collection of mine (I collect single release G4 Raritys and keep them MIB). I don't think I could bring myself to open a MOC G1 if I ever got a hold of one. I only have one G2 and it's MOC and I don't plan on opening that either.
-
Open it! Open it! Hate seeing ponies in packets not played with and never brushed  it upsets me lol - I wouldnt throw the packaging or box away though.
Especially G1's poor girls & boys the only reason I would ever keep one in there Box/packet is if I already had the same one opened and out that I can brush :D
But if I got a super rare one lets say Baby Princess Sparkle & her pretty buggy boxed and packets never ever opened I would have to open it :D poor girl has been shut away in that dark box for all these years she needs some air. My boyfriend was actually going to get this one for me from Ebay & I said but I would have to open it he said he wouldn't let me  lol. So I told him not to get it for me because I would devalue it by like I dunno £150 don't really no her price but yeah you get my point lol :p
Guess I always think that if I don't de-box ponies I get they might turn out like Stinky Pete the Prospector in Toy Story 2 ;) & we don't want that :p
I have already decided that when I have kids they can play with my ponies, because I will get to play too hehe (the rarer & special ones to me they can play with when there old enough to appreciate them though :P)
-
I open all of mine because I take them traveling with me. I do, however, keep some of the boxes for the rarer ponies. Still, at the moment, I have around 10 ponies I need to debox. I try to style my ponies right after I unbox them and before I open any new ones.
-
I would understand keeping harder to find ponies MIB but for me in general G4 are a current release, very common and largely exist MIB with collectors. A quick trawl of ebay will find more of them MIB than loose; the value of them loose or MIB is not so dramatic that I think being loose rather than boxed would worry me. We have seen it with G3. There were a lot of collectors about when G3 was on shelves and this has lead to some ponies being more common MIB than loose.
However that being said, its very much a personal choice ;) For me I release G4 as I know I am not really loosing money in doing so and because I prefer ponies loose.
As to your questions; its not hard to find earlier released ponies via sites like the Arena or ebay as long as you are prepared to pay higher prices for them due to them no longer being on shelves. And completing a collection of a line like G4 when they are so widely available is easy enough...but with so many releases it will be expensive.
-
I only have 3 G4 ponies. I left them all in the box. I figure that eventually I will find them/piece them together from the second hand stores already out of box. Well that is my hope at least.
-
I have almost a dozen g3's still in box... I simply can't de-box a pony anymore... If you have the will power to do so and it's a g4, have at it!
-
I keep everything G4 in packige, I guess I prefer them like that, becouse of the mintness and
the accessories will be intact. :) It's tempting to to free some of them though >_<
-
I would open any G3s and G4s but G1 and G2 always stay in the boxes :)
-
I'm like a 8 year old child. I open the ALL! and play with them..... and I'm almost 30....
I guess if I had some in lovely boxes I'd keep them in there but I can't help it I wanna love on them!

I totally agree and I am 42! :) I cant see keeping in box unless your only buying to sell later.
-
I just like both ,Is nice to see a minty old release ,more than anything else, to me is really complete if it is in the box
but opening is a thrill as well :) both do require something , keeping them in Boxes is nice, they can be hung on walls and easy to clean ,
loose ponies require a display area, and there are expose to dust a bit more and cleaning them can become a heavy task as well
I ran out of display area at some point and kept anything new MIB ,I just recently got me more shelves and was able to open some sets
but it is like everyone else ,what makes you happy :)
I'm still going for 2 of each, Just got 4 MIB glimmer wings Ponies that I was able to purchase from a member here :) just missing RD glimmer wings now
and got an MIB FS Fluttershy ,RD and TS just missing AJ FS ...this is going to be an impossible grail I think wish I had not opened mine a year ago but her box was smoky so had to be deboxed :( either way and it would be easier to find her loose , so there you have it ....some are better kept  Mib
makes me happy that I can have both a loose set and an mib set :)

I struggle with this all the time. I love loose ponies, I love to play with them and arrange them. My personal collection is almost entirely G4 minis, which are super tempting to open because they are tiny and don't take up a lot of display space. And because I want to hold them!
But at the same time, MIB is appealing. Shiny and new, and "complete" by a special definition of the word.
I started late, so I'm playing catch-up collecting the earlier waves. For those ponies, if they're MIB they stay that way unless/until I get a double. I'm actually really happy when I find one that's already opened when I buy it, because then I can skip the guilt and go straight to enjoying my loose pony! :newpony:
When it comes to the new waves I can buy in stores, I've been gradually trying to buy two of each pony or set so that I can open one and keep one sealed. It's easy enough to do with blind bag ponies because they're tiny enough and affordable enough to get away with it, lol! (My bank account is suspicious of my pony-buying activities, but so far it hasn't caught on. The trick is to shop somewhere like Target, and then slip a pony in with other, more mundane things like milk and socks. :devious: )

I'm an opener. I'm not collecting ponies as a nest egg, and even so, I couldn't sell them because of gaps in my collection, and I'd always wonder if they will keep climbing.
With that said, vintage MIB G1s would remain boxed, which is why I don't go for them because I like my toys to be free. I blame Toy Story 2. My wallet thanks me too, because they can be pricey.
In a perfect world, more items would be sold like Tomica diecast in Japan where you can open them, enjoy them, and make them go back to MIB easily.

And don't forget they have thir own Tomica Stores, too. I would love to go to one someday. The problem wouldn't be getting me there, the problem would be getting me out... ;)
And of course Tomica got the box idea from the original Matchbox cars...not that they sell those in the boxes any more.

Yep, exactly! Keep it up long enough, and you lose track of what percentage of your shopping trip was ponies. "Oh, you got a some new ponies! How much were they?" "...I dunno." :P

I'm horrible--I always open ponies without much care for what happens to the boxes ;u;'' Lately I've been making a point to at least take photos of the boxes so I remember what they looked like. But I really do like having my ponies out and about so I can touch them and play with them and such. This is why I try not to be tempted by G1-3 MIB ponies--I'd just open them and make everyone else freak out!

Much as I love my ponies to be free, I'd never be able to open a G1, or probably even a G2 or G3. I wouldn't freak if someone else did, though, as I do understand the temptation.
