Title: Could anyone ID and PC this old Mattel doll?
Post by: Loona on November 10, 2013, 03:48:13 AM
I have this doll who is marked as Mattel, but I couldn't find any info on her online :/

she has the following text on her bum:

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

and she has a soft upper torso. she comes without any clothes, and her left arm seems to be sticking out a little. her hair is nice, not dry or frizzy, but it seems the glue which was applied inside her head made her head rock hard (and also somewhat discoloured) at places (it is visible in the closer pic, on the right side of her face, just where the first row of hair is).

does anyone know who she is, and what she might be worth?
thank you in advance for any help! ^^

That's Growing Up Skipper. She's one of Mattels not so bright ideas. Look up Growing Up Skipper online and you'll see what I mean. Not how munch she's worth, but I know it's not a lot.

Oh man, I got that girl as a hand-me-down from my aunt back in the early 90's.  Lots of memories there but not Mattel's brightest idea.

thank you for the quick ID to both of you! and also for the "stomach-aching rotfl"! oh my! this doll is hilarious and crazy, both in the good and bad ways :haha:
I stumbled upon auction titles like "1975 Barbie Doll Grow Grown GROWING UP SKIPPER Gorgeous! Still Grows!", as well as videos demonstrating how the growing works XD no wonder if the poor girl isn't too popular...

unfortunately, it seems that my doll doesn't grow anymore (this might be the reason why her left arm sticks out a little). maybe I'll put her up either for trade, or for auction on a local site, she might be worth more locally, for doll collectors who can't afford the high international postal costs for cheap but overseas dolls.

If you didn't know any of her background, she's cute! Or a feminist might like her as a talking point...

The best part is that Mattel made a friend for her called Growing Up Ginger. At least Skipper didn't have to go though this awkward time alone.

I got to talking to people at work about my doll collection, and one of the "older" women, had told me she had a doll that "grew boobs."  I had never heard of this before.  Then I stumbled across a My Scene Barbie on Ebay that had this same gimmick.  I knew the woman didn't have a My Scene (she would have been in her 30's, then) so she must have had this one.

I guess the reason I bring this up is to ask why, if the Skipper version was such a controversial doll, and bad idea (?) WHY would they do it again for the My Scene line? :wonder:

I've never heard of the My Scene one, I'll have to look that up.

Didn't any of you ladies growing up in the 80's ever flap your arms while chanting 'I must, I must, I must increase my bust'?

No?... Well, it only works for Skipper apparently 'cause my cousin and I never developed any spectacular curves. We did have nice arms, though!

bumping this thread to update on Skipper: today she has been mailed out (together with a Clawdeen) to a lady living in the far south-east of the country. I think they will be Christmas presents, as the lady said she wants to make dresses for them before Christmas. I hope she will enjoy herself in her new home. it was much fun to have her around (together with her strange little ackground :P ).

lol, actually I do remember running around, doing propeller moves with my hands (never heard of Skipper back then obviously), yet I am just plain flat.
it is not fair  -_-
