Hello all amazing pony artists! I've been thinking about this for some time and I guess it's best to start by gauging interest first. If you like ATCs, I'm sure this is your cup of tea! (Edit. Nov 12 - taking sign-ups already, see end of post!)

What is a deco?
Decos are small handmade booklets that contain about 4-10 pages. Most typically they are postcard sized, but the size and shape can vary; anything goes as long as it fits an envelope. Each signer should decorate one page, or sometimes a spread, according to the theme (if the deco has a specified theme) and send it forward. Once all pages are full, the deco is returned to its maker, or sent to whoever is marked as the owner. (Quoting myself from the Deco Swappers forum.)

Normally decos are swapped with other deco swappers a few at a time, most people have certain swap pals they swap with on a regular basis, just like pen pals. That means decos generally don't have a predetermined route, they can be sent to anyone and the maker can only hope they will be returned when full. However, sometimes the round robin system is used instead and that is what I'm planning to do here: I'll make a My Little Pony themed deco and gather a list of people who sign up. I then send the deco to the first person on that list; they decorate the first page and send the booklet forward to the next person on the list, and so on. The last one will return the deco to me, full of pretty MLP artwork. ^_^ (I will think of something to reward all participants! Though I'm not expecting you to spend hours on your entry but mainly have fun by crafting something pony themed, see below for ideas.)

Drawing is not required but you're free to use e.g. stickers, cut up some box art to use on your page, print out colouring book pictures, or whatever you can think of, as long as it's MLP themed and you don't violate anyone's copyrights (i.e. no fanmade art other than your own). You can also use all kinds of embellishments like pretty papers, ribbons, brads, rhinestones etc. to decorate your entry.

I organized a round robin deco like this some years ago on the old Arena but unfortunately it was lost almost immediately as the second or third signer went MIA. :( That's why I'm requiring at least some feedback this time as well as an e-mail address to be able to contact you outside the Arena. I would very much like to have the deco back, and I think we also owe that to the ones who spent their time on decorating the first pages. I will set a time limit of three weeks for you to work on your page if that helps focusing. Of course you can have more time if needed, just ask!

Here's a gallery of my decos (all kinds of themes) if you'd like to take a look for inspiration: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/griffin/album/470921 My style is pretty different from most, however, as many deco people do not draw but use magazine pics and other readymade stuff. Very few of them have open access galleries, though, otherwise I would be happy to show you the variety of styles.

How to sign up
I'm taking sign-ups for approx. one week, until Nov 20, or until all the slots are filled. I ask you to have at least two (2) positive feedbacks here on the Arena, preferably from trading or selling (but I will judge each case individually, I just want to make sure people are committed and have some kind of proof that they are trustworthy).

Please PM me with the following information:
1. Your Arena username & real name
2. E-mail
3. Postal address
4. Link to feedback
5. Any preferences regarding the order of participants

Your address and e-mail will be given privately to the person before you so they know where to send the deco and can notify you prior to sending. Please let me know asap if your address changes or if there are any unexpected issues. I also ask everyone to keep me updated whenever they send or receive the deco, either by posting on this thread or by PMing/e-mailing me. There will be some participants who don't have an Arena account so you can either use e-mail or contact them through me if needed.

What to do when you receive the deco:
1. Leave a message to let me know you have received it.
2. Find the page with your name and decorate it as you please. Don't forget to include your name/username so we'll know who made the pretty entry! :)
3. Send the deco to the address given to you and notify me (and, optionally, the receiver so they know to expect the deco).
I ask you to keep the deco for three weeks at max, that should be sufficient time to make your entry and pass the deco on. If you need more time, just let me know. I know life can be unpredictable, and the deco might turn up at a bad time, it's hard to tell beforehand... But communication is the key.
Finally, and most importantly - have fun!

Participant list - full!

^ Certainly!

Anypony else? Maybe my post was a little tl; dr and that puts people off...  ^^'

I know the timing may be bad with the holidays approaching and all, but please note the deco will take some time to pass around (normal decos usually travel for YEARS) so it might not be until weeks or months that it reaches you. And I'm very lenient when it comes to deadlines as long as you keep me updated and won't just go MIA. :)

And if you have any questions just let me know, I'm happy to answer! I know it may sound confusing at first but I'll provide clear instructions.

I've never quite understood the concept of a round robin I don't think.  Does everyone send out a deco?  Or just one that everyone decorates?  I'm sure it's a ridiculously simple concept and I'm overthinking it, but I think I have just confused myself.  XD
Title: Re: Gauging interest: round robin deco vol. 2
Post by: Griffin on November 10, 2013, 06:55:58 PM
Zenna, it can be done either way. I was thinking just starting one that everyone decorates, mainly because it's easier to grasp the concept once you actually see a deco in person. Of course everyone is welcome to start their own if they get excited about it! I would be happy to sign everyone else's decos, too. ^^

If there's no interest in this I'll probably just make a normal deco (with no set participant list) with MLP theme and send it to UrocyonFox with some other ones... :)

Oh, ok.  That makes sense.  :)  Sounds like fun!

Post by: Griffin on November 11, 2013, 11:41:53 PM
I found some Finnish pony people who would like to do this so it's possible to just start one for them (+ U.Fox ^^ ) and try again later here on the Arena. But it's only been a couple of days so far so I will still wait if there are people interested, not everyone spends half their time online like me, eh...

I think I'll start taking actual sign-ups now so it's easier to keep track of how many participants I actually have. I'll update the original post!

I would be interested :)

I think it sounds like fun. Though is there a size limit on these? Or pretty much as long as it fits in a standard envelope it's good?
Title: Re: Gauging interest: round robin deco vol. 2

Hey MikeysGrrrl & tsukikakushi, thanks for your interest! I updated the original post with sign-up info and requirements if you'd like to take a look.

Yes these are pretty much like scrapbooks, except that they are smaller and one deco passes through several people who all contribute.

Basically any size that fits an envelope is fine. Most people prefer postcard sized decos, though, as larger ones tend to get heavy and expensive to ship (typically you swap several decos at once although here it will just be one... in any case it's a good idea to keep the weight as low as possible to minimize postages). Of course it also comes down to individual preferences, some like to work in smaller scale while some prefer a larger format. I was planning the "standard" postcard size for this one, too.

So, just to clarify... I will make one booklet with a page reserved for each participant. You don't have to worry about the size or anything, just see what others have done before you and you'll be fine! I can take some pictures of the deco before I pass it on to the first person so you will see what to expect. :)

I'm interested too, just kinda bad timing. I know it's possible to get it after the holidays though, with the working time each individual will have. I'm considering it, this sounds fun!

This is a super cutie idea, I've never heard of these.

I don't have any feedback though so I can't enter but I hope it goes well and I know you guys will make an awesome Deco!

^ I hope so! Send me your details when you have the chance, Sokkis, and I'll add you. :)

Blackestbird, I hope you decide to join, too! I can place you towards the end if that makes it easier? I'm pretty sure the booklet will only have time to go through one or two persons this year so the rest will definitely get it only after the holidays.

Bekuno, I'm sorry you can't join us this time. If you're interested in decos (other than MLP themed), there is some general information available on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friendship_book) and several groups at various places online, e.g. Yahoo, Facebook etc. where you can find swap pals. :)

Thanks all for the sign-ups so far, I have updated the list!

Five slots still remain, at max. There is no clear-cut limit, I'd just rather not take more than ten as the deco would get thick and heavy and also the last signers would need to wait for a long time.

Maybe someone can start a deco of their own if there's high demand... ;)

Yay, more people!

I've been swapping decos and other booklets since I was twelve. It has really become kind of a lifestyle for me by now... even without decos I would be drawing and crafting, and since I sometimes struggle coming up with themes to draw, decos offer some nice ideas and starting points. Of course there is a downside - I mostly draw for decos and ATCs and I hardly ever have the time or energy to draw anything to keep. :P Oh well, at least the decos I make for myself should return one day. I make them quite often for other people, though. If any of you gets excited about the idea (beyond pony related themes) and would like to know more, I'm always happy to help. ;)

I think I need to get working soon now that there are so many slots taken already... If I can decide which pony to put on the cover!

@ Griffin,

What kind of paper grade is the notebook? Can we use more than one page to art on if we like? :3

@ Griffin,

What kind of paper grade is the notebook? Can we use more than one page to art on if we like? :3

It will be handmade, I typically use regular copy paper (20-22 lb?) and something more sturdy for the covers. I have tons of old handouts from school that I like to recycle :'D But I guess I'll skip them this time and use clean paper for this one. Since there are so many interested in this I'll only reserve one page for each, otherwise it'll likely get pretty bulky towards the end of the journey. Some deco makers use heavier or some fancy paper for the pages, too, but I don't think that's necessary. Copy paper is usually strong enough and allows you to glue more stuff onto it before getting too thick. :D  If you're planning to do a handdrawn/painted entry, I recommend that you work on a separate sheet of paper that you then glue onto the page, especially if you want to use watercolour or other wet media. Just to avoid any accidents...

Typically with decos, decorating one page is the norm and often the pages are numbered, which kind of suggests you're only supposed to do one page, although sometimes you may decide to do a whole spread - especially if there is no numbering on the pages and if you fee like you need more space for your idea to work, or if the deco is old and has still many pages left and you feel like it should be filled faster. Without assigned participants they do travel quite a while, up to ten years even, although around 2-4 years is perhaps the average.

I can't believe how quickly these spots are filling up  ^.^ This is going to be so much fun, I can't wait to get started :)

They typically travel 2-4 years? Wow  That's such a long time, it must pass through so many people, I really do love the idea of this and until I read this thread I had never heard of this before. What have I been missing out on?
Title: Re: Gauging interest: round robin deco vol. 2
Post by: Griffin on November 13, 2013, 08:03:44 PM
^ Well, generally there are no time limits and since the booklets aren't tracked in any way they could end up anywhere. Some never return. That's part of the fun, though - to see where they have travelled. I admit that I myself often hold onto them for way too long, months even. I just have so many waiting to be signed, currently about 30 and that's a low count for me, I've been up to 60... This year I've been decoing like crazy and also tried to keep track of the time they spend here by writing down the arrival date in pencil. That way I can prioritize those that have been here for too long, or just pass them if it looks like I still have no inspiration after all that time. (Understandably, decos with more difficult themes tend to lie around the longest...)

I also take less pressure with booklets that are made for & by my friends, as many of my Finnish swap pals are just as slow as me. :D I guess it's a common problem especially for people who do handdrawn/painted entries. Making collages and using printed pictures etc. is much quicker. Personally I prefer quality over quantity - I'd rather have everyone take a few months and make pretty entries instead of just slapping some stuff together without any imagination or creativity in order to be quick. It's not a contest... as long as the booklets are safe and are taken care of and returned eventually, I don't care how long they travel. Some might think differently though. I've had some arguments about this with people... I do agree with them in that it's polite to try and be as quick as possible. My "possible" is just defined a bit differently as theirs. :P

However, with this one I actually want to be sure the deco gets back, hence all the limits and requirements. Like said, I will give you more time if you need it! As long as you keep me updated about the situation. It was pretty disheartening last time, to have the deco disappear before it reached the third person.  :( Not even so much to me, but to all the excited people who were waiting to sign a page, just like you all now.

Hey guys, sorry I've kept you waiting! I was away until Tuesday but managed to start on the deco before I left, and today I was able to finish it. Here are some pictures!

Took a picture of the inner cover and first page to show you what to expect. Every page is numbered and has your Arena username on it. I added some more basic instructions, mainly a little summary of the questions & answers that have come up in this thread so far. As far as style goes, there is really no way to do it right or wrong. :) I've seen entries covered in ribbons and glitter and rhinestones and sticker borders, very elaborate. And I've seen (& done) entries that are pretty much just a drawing glued onto the page, with only my name added. So whatever feels right to you!

I'll PM everyone with the addresses in a minute. Here's the finalized order of participants:
1. UrocyonFox (US)
2. MikeysGrrrl (Canada)
3. Cron Sacchariferous (US)
4. Tsukikakushi (US)
5. dashesndots (US)
6. Imialani (Finland)
7. Oniontart (Finland)
8. Sokkis (Finland)
9. Marigold (US)
10. Haine (Finland)

I'm sorry some people will have to pay more for shipping than others, especially those towards the end who need to mail overseas. Alternating US-Fin would have made it more even but I don't know if it's really sensible to fly it over the Atlantic several times and add to the waiting time. :P

That looks so pretty :) I really can't wait to get started on my page ^.^

We should do something like this regularly, like have a little group set up on the arena that maybe passes them around amongst each other and in the end everyone ends up with one of their own :) Each one the theme of the member that winds up with it ;)

Now look what you've started Griffin :haha: I'm deco crazy ;)

I think that would be awesome! Though maybe we should wait & see how this one goes before committing to anything. Don't wanna be passing around 12 of them at once & having people burn out, ya know? (that's how I got with ATC swaps, just one right after the other...)

And now I have a hankering for cranberry muffins... :yummy:

They're here!!!!! *dances* After I sent that message yesterday I came home to them being in my mailbox. :3 Oh my. Gosh I can't wait guys.

Now I have a question, I have a pony page I want to do that is kinda humorous. It is silly clean, and appropriate pony humor  but I want to make sure thats ok. It will still be artistic and I will have to figure out HOW I'm going to do it, but I wanted to make sure that you weren't oppose to pony humor.

Post by: Griffin on December 10, 2013, 01:14:37 AM
That's great news! I was starting to get worried here.

I don't mind a humorous entry at all, you can do whatever inspires you. :) Since you say it's appropriate.

That reminds me, I think Arena's rules regarding mature content (language, violence, nudity) provide good guidelines, that way you can show off your page here (as I'm sure everyone is curious to see pics!) and we'll make sure none of those signing after you are offended by any of the content. I didn't even realize I should've perhaps stated that in the beginning, I was just thinking cute and innocent ponies. ;) For example, I'd say a style similar to UrocyonFox's zombie pony ATCs is perfectly acceptable.

Can't wait to see what you all create!

When I first joined this arena, I learned about ATCs and fell in love with them. I've never heard of Deco books before, but I am completely fascinated by this idea! I have this idea of like 4 or 5 people each making a book (recently I've been playing with book binding) and each passing the book to another person. Each having it for a couple weeks before passing to next person. By the end of a few months each person would get their book back. I love this! How does someone even get started in something like this?

UPDATE: I just spent the last 3 hours reading, researching, and looking at finished pages. I just wanna say thank you for introducing me to decos! Just joined a Facebook group and lurking for now, but I might start on my own books very soon :D

Art Deco is in the mail! Be on the lookout for it. :D I scanned my page so I could post it on my dA, dunno if its ok to post now or if I should wait till the book makes it back home....

Being the first is a little bit of a bummer cause I wont get to see everyone's awesome work unless they snap a picture or scan it either!! D:  :cloud:

Let me know what our rules are on posting our page we made and I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with.

I'm excited to receive it since I'm next on the list ^.^ I can't wait to see what you put together Urocyon :)

I could be wrong, but I think Griffin said that we could post pictures of our pages.

I would love to see some pictures and I'm sure everyone else would, too! And I think you can share them whenever you feel like it, no need to wait unless you want to keep your page as a surprise for the next participant. :)

Ha Ha! So I will post it as a spoiler so if you don’t want to look and keep it a surprise until you get the deco that’s up to you. I do however recommend reading this!

I heard about the “princess ponies” that are supposed to have eyelashes. I know that eyelashes on BBEs are pretty good so I imagined it was something similar. Oh boy was I wrong. The first time I saw a princess pony I thought “what is up with that gal’s eye brows?!? She needs some tweezers!” They make me think of Groucho Marx of those fake glasses-nose-moustache combos they sell at costume shops. They always looked silly to me. So I present my expectations and reality on princess ponies.

Although I'm not a fan of those eyelashes/brow, I think it was an 80's thing, wasn't that all the rage, having bushy/thick eyebrows? I was a kid, so I'm just trying to remember how it was :P

Thank you all. ^.^ I have three sons now, so they keep me quite busy.

When I started scetching Peachy for my page I didn't have the actual deco on my hands and I ended up drawing the original work WAY too big. I was so mad at myself! After few thoughts I scanned the original and decided to color it with Photoshop and then printed it. I added some coloring details by hand and it actually came out quite nice! :)

It is HERE!  That was fast Sokkis.  So I am next, and oh is this book lovely.  When it goes back to the owner I hope all of the pages get to be scanned in and posted here.  :)

Alright, so it is my turn!  Going to start working on it this weekend.  I am glad I didn't start on anything for it because it is much smaller than what I was envisioning.  This size is perfect really!

I want to know, did everyone individually decided to add some sparkly gemstones?  Or did someone add them to some pages?  It really looks consistent and good.  I may have to find some nail art gems for my drawing.

Griffin are you ok with me pretty much copy pasting your description on page 1 fr setting up a second one? (I will note/credit you of course!)

Also guys, what if I put a handful of pony ATCs in there as a reward and everyone who fills a page can keep an ATC as a thank you gift? The shipping might be a little more so I wanted to see if anyone opposes it

Can this deco be compared to swaps to get feedback? I would love have feedback for the future swaps and so on :) I also noticed that vol.3 deco needs some feedback  :wonder:
Title: Re: Round robin deco vol. 2 - travelling
Post by: Griffin on November 17, 2014, 07:06:29 AM
I have good news for Marigold and everyone else, the deco has arrived and is safe with my friend. :cheer: I'll be meeting her next weekend, she probably isn't done with her page yet but I can ask her to bring it anyway, I'm dying to see all the entries! :D

I think that also means I can finally leave feedback for everyone. ^.^ As I explained to someone before, the feedback question is a bit tricky as it's always possible the deco gets lost in the mail. With swaps you can simply make a replacement item and send again, but here the rest of the participants would be left without a deco to sign and hence without feedback. Besides, the person who had it last would need to prove it was actually shipped in order to avoid negative feedback. Shipping with tracking is expensive so I didn't want to require that either. That's why I decided no feedback should be left until the round was finished. Now that it has, you all deserve positive feedback! I think all participants are still active here, but I can take care of the feedback to ensure no one is left without one. :)

Huge hugs and a big thank you to everyone who wanted to be part of this! I'm glad to see everyone enjoyed themselves and that there's so much interest in another round.
