Title: Should I rehair trimmed forelocks on these ponies?
Post by: Alatariel-Silimaure on October 30, 2013, 01:57:52 PM
Okay... so I have a few ponies that have trimmed forelocks.. two are UK ponies..

Hopscotch
White Tootsie
Tex - US regular release

Their forelocks are basically mohawks... but the rest of their hair and bodies are in pretty good shape... I want to rehair the forelocks to fix their noticeable flaw... but I want to know if that's going to hurt their value significantly if I decide to sell them in the future.

Right now I am planning on keeping Tootsie and Hopscotch, but as I already have a near mint Tex, I'm planning on selling him.

Here are Pictures (please note, I haven't cleaned their bodies yet, most of the marks should come off the bodies):

Tootsie has a few other spots in the mane that have been cut, but it's not as noticable and sits pretty well with the rest of the hair

Tex is gorgeous exept for that stupid forehead mohawk

Hopscotch does have a shorter mane, I believe it's been cut as it's uneven, and her tail is a bit shorter than it should be too I believe... I have considered a full mane rehair on her...

I also have an Italian Moondancer with a mohawk, I'm considering rehairing her mane and replacing her frizzy tail, but again... how would that affect her value? Would a collector rather have original hair in bad shape... or new hair?

I dunno what the true "right" thing to do is but...

I was told on my Italian Yellow Moondancer - don't rehair the buzzed forelock because if I sell her, and some other collector wants to rehair it, they can, but, it might decrease the value if I do it and I don't plan on keeping her... I don't know what I want to do with her so, I haven't touched it.

The common ponies... in my personal opinion, I'd rehair them but wouldn't ask any more for them than you are with the buzzed hair... Maybe a buck or something - because they're common enough (Tex obviously is more sought after than Tootsie, price point is higher anyway)... I wouldn't buy a pony rehaired like that, at this point when I see a pony with any cut hair I just bait to alternately rehair it, haha.

Tootsie is the white UK tootsie... not sure how common she is

She's still pretty common in my opinion... sorry when I posted versus Tex I /did/ think she was the normal one, just glanced at the photos. I haven't seen White Tootsie be incredibly high priced lately, so, I think it's really up to you - if you're keeping her, rehair her if it bothers you, if not, perhaps just sell them as is...?

I do plan on keeping tootsie and hopscotch, I would prefer them having non trimmed forelocks, I just want to make sure it won't devalue them significantly... If it will I will keep them as is and look to upgrade them someday

I'd just try to match their hair color as best as you can to replace forelocks (if you don't like to borrow a bit of hair from their tails). Easier to replace a forlock than a whole re-hair if they're not totally buzzed. I use the policy if I'm going to sell it, I don't touch the hair.

If you're keeping them then yes I'd totally fix the forelocks. I think Tootsie is Water Nixie, Hopscotch is probably Sour Grapes... I think they'll look great rehaired, or as is, honestly.

yeah I just planned on doing the forelocks, not the whole head :3

@Sunshine: they're pretty cute now, I have just never been a fan of trimmed hair... maybe I should get a price check on them as they are... I'm not sure what they're going for, if they're not ones that go for a lot then that might jsut answer my question XD

My guess is maybe about $15 each? That's just... off the top of my head, but, I mean they are super adorable ponies - but, I've seen your rehairs and they're lovely, so, you know, even if you did rehair the forelock, I still believe you wouldn't be completely DE-valuing them. Some people may expect a bit of a discounted price if you ever were to sell them but I wouldn't personally think that like, a $15 would be worth any less than $10 with a forelock rehair, again, this is just my opinion!

i would but i have done this to all my ponies with trims as i can't stand having hair cut ponies but i also haven't sold any of them to other collectors. :)
they are your ponies if you love them and want them to look great, i say do it :D

The white Tootsie was never sold in the UK :) She is a Euro release but not here.

As to whether to rehair the forelocks or not, as others have said it comes down to whether or not you are planning to sell them. If you are keeping them in your collection for the foreseeable future as you mention and rehairing them would make you happiest, then I say go ahead and do it. If you are planning to sell you could give your buyer the option of one or the other.

As for price, when its just a forelock I believe a re haired forelock does not add value but neither does it devalue further - price is almost like for like.

oh! I thought it was a UK release lol, thought it said that on wiki but apparently I remembered wrong XD

thanks for the advice :3 I'm still grappling with what to do, I'm leaning towards rehairing the forelocks on tootsie and hopscotch since I do plan to keep them, but giving a buyer the option for tex sounds like a great plan :3

My Hopscotch had her forelock chopped so I sent her and a spare Glory's tail to get rehaired (before I could do it) and she looks awesome, it matches perfectly. I'm not going to sell her so I didn't mind the restore. So I'd say if you're going to keep them then go for it. As for Tex you can fix him or do him in a different colour.
