Title: Ursula pony
Post by: Sukeile on October 30, 2013, 09:30:43 AM
I wanted to practice customizing again and my friend suggested I should make Disney's Ursula.

Using a fakie baby as a base and sketched up a design I like.
The question is if I can pull it off!

Base and idea sketches:

Third update:
Spoiler
Oh my that hair was tricky!
It was so much more difficult to get the clay to stick on the head than on the body for some reason, haha!
And I also forgot to sculpt her earrings before I boiled her, so I guess I'll just have to paint them on.visitors can't see pics , please register or login
Fourth update:
Spoiler
So, her hair and "bra" fell off when I attached her head.
Will glue them back on later.
I pretty much just put some white paint on a wet sponge and dabbed her with it to give her skin more texture and make her paler.
Looks kind of messy right now but I think it will work out nicely in the end :)

Fifth update: Complete! Well, almost, I still have to seal her and make her necklace, but I think that might take a while because I can not find the little shell I wanted to use for it XD

It was so difficult but at last I am satisfied with her, sure there's room for improvement ( like not caking on the paint as much next time maybe :P ) but I learned a lot and had fun!
And I like her. :)

Good luck! When I did min I used the end of a pen cap to make the suckers.  I dunno if you have a plan already but it worked fairly well. :)

That is a great tip!
I honestly do not know how I will do it, never sculpted on a pony before so I might be in over my head here.

But how shall I learn unless I try? ;)

Is there a place I could see photos of yours?
I promise not to copy, but I am sure it is good for inspiration! :D

Thank you all so much for the encouragement!
I can not do much until after this weekend because I have to go to a bigger town to get polymer clay first, but after that I promise to post some updated photos :)

Updated, tentacles are kind of thick but she balances well.
Did not harden yet so changes might still be made :P

They look amazing! Be careful when you insert the tail! Looks like she has a little extra plastic in there.  I think they are divine. :)

Thank you everybody, I am having a really fun time trying to figure this out, haha

Oh, Yes, I see it :o

Hmm...I might not even add a tail;
I think it might empathize her rump more and Ursula is quite the bootylicious lady after all

Not completely sure though, I'll wait to decide after I finish up with the clay :)

Awesome work hun!!! Have you read about cutting a V shape out of the plastic on the neck plug? It makes it easier to get the head back onto the body and you don't have to manhandle and squish the head to get it in. I almost always need to be kinda rough to get them together if I don't make the V cut. It was just a thought since you do have clay on the head, I'd hate for it to pop off at this stage.

Haha, the clay did pop off when I reattached the head
Thankfully it is intact so I think I shall just glue it back on after painting.

But this is really good advice that I will remember for the future!

This is looking so good!

Just remember you should glue any pieces on before you paint a lot.  The logic is that you should be gluing to the pony and not to the topcoat of paint.  If you glue things on to several layers of paint they are more likely to fall off again and take the paint with them since the clay is bonded to the paint layer.  But if you glue so that the sculpting is adhering straight to the pony there is less risk of this happening.  Does that make sense? I don't know if I am explaining it well.

Oh, that makes sense! I hope I did not paint too much all ready >_<
I only put a light layer of paint on, do you think it might still be okay?

I better glue it on now before I go any further, thank you for your advice again Sarah, it is most helpful!

It's hard to tell just by looking.  I'd think it would be, fine but if you are worried about it you could scrape/rub a little away just where you plan to glue it on. :)

Will do! Since it will be covered anyway I goes scraping some off won't hurt :)

Thank you all so much!
I'm sorry for taking so long to complete her…
When I painted the mouth it was much more difficult than I thought and decided to redo it.
Managed to get it back to pretty much the state it was in before I started the detailing but now I am so afraid to mess up again that I keep pushing it off for another time

But hopefully I'll have it done before next week at least, hehe

Have you considered sealing the fbr before you do the detailing? If you do sometimes it can give you a bit more wiggle room to wipe away imperfections without damaging the undercoat. :)

Unfortunately I have some bad news,
I'm not sure what went wrong but when my SO tried to seal her the paint started to come off.
I used acrylics that I have used before on blind bag ponies without problems… He says it was because it hadn't dried completely yet but I'm pretty sure that it had.

Thank you so much Shenanigans, BlackCurtains and assasin_kitty! I am very happy you like the photos!

Saralacewing, Thank you so much for all of your advice and help, even though I still managed to mess up at the end I still really appreciate it :)
And to answer you and Griffin, I was planning to make some more Disney villains, because this was so much fun.

But I think it might be a while till I start something new as I have the paint mystery to solve and also need to find some more baity fakes to use in my experiments :P

I hope you can fix the paint ! What brand of paint and what kind if clay is it? I've had this problem with some if the paint on sealers, especially Americana or varnish. I do hope in the future you continue to make customs because you have a real talent. I see commissions and swaps in you future. :)

Oh I'm sorry to hear about your paint problem! Your pony looks great-

You might want to try sealing with Testors Dulcote?  It sprays on, dries "dry" (instead of sticky like some sealers) and doesn't mess up the finish - http://www.testors.com/product/136012/1260T/_/Dullcote_Lacquer_-_3_oz._Spray_Can

Ah, you are both really kind, Thank you
I will most certainly do more because it's so much fun, but I have to wait until my daytime work schedule settles down a bit.

The paint I used was kind of cheap hobby acrylics.
My fiancé gave me some of his modeling paint to try and repaint her with so I hope it will work out better.

In a way I am grateful that this happened now as this was mostly for practice, and not on something that was planned as a gift or a commission.

So, all in all I think this was a good experiment, as it did teach me what not to do :XD:

I will look into that spray coat too, it sounds a lot better than what we used. :)
