Title: If you had to choose between childhood ponies and more recently acquired ponies
Post by: Lyra on October 27, 2013, 08:11:41 AM
My family is moving and alot of my stuff is there (bad me). Some (newer) ponies are being sold on or given away. A loooot of other things also have to go.
I'm lucky to still have all my favourite ponies I had as a child and I love them, but there are a lot of cuddly toys I sort of miss a little when I see pictures of them. Anyway, this got me thinking -

Would you give up every pony you have bought for yourself since childhood, if it meant you could get back all your most precious childhood ponies? (even if it means giving up hundreds for the sake of 3 or 4?)

And if you still have them, which would you choose anyway?

I'd have to go with my adulthood collection as it's really the collection I dreamed about as a child.  I only have one original pony, and I would be loathe to part with her--and honestly I might part w/ all the others just to keep her--BUT, if I could leave her out of it, I would not give up the current herd to get the old herd back, as much as I loved them!

Honestly, having grown up as an only child and only grandchild, I was completely spoiled rotten  So I never seemed to grow attached to any of my toys, because I was constantly bombarded with new toys so much that I never felt love or attachment to any particular items  Thinking about it in that sense, actually makes me a little sad. My family was all about buying love, no time or attention, but all the toys a child could want (which although it sounds nice, it's really not).

I love the collection that I have now, I don't have anything from my childhood, and I wouldn't give up my collection to have my childhood ponies or any other toys for that matter.

My dad tells me that I had ponies as a child, but I have no memory of them (except a vague thought about having an aqua-coloured G2 when I was about 11 years old), they don't appear in any photographs, and I was a real Barbie nut and never gave much thought to MLP until 2010... so I've chosen adulthood collection. If I had fond memories of my childhood ponies maybe I would choose differently, but as far as my conscious memory is concerned, I've only ever been an adult collector.

A mixture of both?

I can't say I'd want to part with some of my nirvanas. :/ They are just too rare and special to me to let go. I also adore my childhood collection-- even though I have very few survivors.

I could totally slim down to under 10, if need be, but I would keep old and new.

I sold most of my adult collection and kept my (repro) childhood collection. :)

I would die to have my old collection back! I don't have even HALF of what I had before we moved houses and they hid them at my Nanny's (which were rumored to be lost and/or burned). I had huge boxes.

My childhood herd is probably my most treasured possession and I would never give them up! They mean the world to me :)

My first 3 childhood ponies (Cotton Candy, AJ and Glory) are the most prized in my collection.  They are possibly also the most worn!  Saying that I would not part with them for anything.  As much as I love the rest of my herd, it is really on money I would need to replace them.

I've sold off half of my recently acquired ponies over the last couple of years so I don't really have any trouble parting with them.  But my childhood ponies on the other hand I could never get rid of, some of them have been with me as long as I can remember.

Since my childhood ponies got me into collecting : I would never ever ever give them up for the ones I recently purchased. When i started collecting I traded some of my childhood ponies away for others and I still regret it today (9 years later). So, no childhood pony ever will leave me. None of them. No way.

I'll never sell my childhood ponies for the new ones! When I was little, I haven't got any because ponies were very expensive. But when I received my first Rainbow Dash and Minty, I was totally happy! They're still in my collection, and Rainbow Dash even has her original box =) So no new ones for old ones.

Oooooh! Thats a tough question. I only actually had a dozen or so ponies as a little girl and I do miss them. Not having them is what made me actually start collecting in the first place. But would I swap all the ponies I have now for those 12 or so ponies from childhood? I will admit that I would probably consider swapping a large portion of them...even if only for that Masquerade I have such fond memories of. But not all no.

I see a lot of people saying it's hard to choose, and it really is! but I find it really interesting XD Also I should answer clearly myself, and I'd keep the childhood ones :)

I never considered that perspective on it before!

My early childhood was marked by a relative lack of ponies: for a long time all I had was a DnP Player and a bunch of fakies. All the fakies and my later G2 ponies have already been given away, and I don't miss them (though if I had the G2 ponies right now, I'd sell them to a collector instead). When I was about 10 I got a few more G1s but never loved them that much. Only as an adult I have been able to acquire the ponies I dreamed of, so ultimately the question is about giving up them or Player. There are quite a few that could go before Player, but not all of them.

I still have most of my child hood ponies still. Most of them are pretty sad looking though. This is a hard one to say. I love both of them and would be hard to get rid of any of them! :(

Hmm, I'd have to say a mixture of both, but if I REALLY had to choose... it'd probably be my adult collection XD I didn't have that many ponies as a child (couldn't afford it!) and I HAVE parted with some of my childhood collection to pay some bills and it wasn't as painful as I thought. Most of my childhood ponies are in terrible condition, they were very played with lol. So would I rather keep my Mimic I got a few years ago over my manky, discolored childhood Bowtie? You betcha!

Besides, I have wonderful memories with my newer ponies :) A lot of them I got from family and friends and they're just as treasured (some of them more so) than my childhood ponies. You can make just as good memories from receiving special ponies as an adult as you can playing with them as a child ^.^

I would keep my childhood ponies.  I have soooo many memories associated with them, it would be like getting rid of a photo album... or even a friend.

Actually, I only have one or two pics from my childhood.  Our photo albums got lost in a move.  So old toys are as close as I get to remembering the "good old days".  :P

It would be really easy for me to choose. I would never let my childhood ponies go. They're way too imporant and full of memories. Rest of my collection.. They're just ponies. But my childhood ponies were much more than that!

I think the only toys my mum ended up giving away were my ponies!! I seem to have pretty much everything else in my wardrobe in a bag XD I miss my ponies a lot lot lot. I had nine G1s I think, and four petites. I would love to have them back. I feel like if I buy back replacements for them, it's going to feel odd... but I want to do it anyway. I have good memories associated with my new ponies, and I have people to share the passion with now (I didn't as a kid, I was the only person I knew who liked MLP (and got teased for it of course! story of my life ad nauseum lol)) so that's nice... it feels like a new stage ^_^

I only kept 2 of my childhood ponies. Most of my collection consists of what I bought as an adult, so I'd keep those. If that meant losing the other 2, I'd be okay with that because I could easily buy them again.

I would have to keep my childhood ponies even though I only have a few left. I can always buy more new ones but could never replace my origionals

I only had one pony as a child. Not that we couldn't afford them, I just didn't really like them. The pony is Blue Mist and I wouldn't trade her the world. I almost have 100 ponies in my collection but I would give them all away just for her. She is the queen of my herd and she will always be.

Same here! :P If this were about my Hamtaro collection though (small but growing!) I would definitely say I'd keep my childhood ones. New stuff is great and now I could get what I always fantasized about as a kid, which is awesome, but none of that could ever replace the originals :) Hamtaro, different collection, but probably the same sentiment.

I miss my collection TOOOOOoo  :bawl: I genuinely will NOT EVER FORGIVE my mum, my ponies where my best friends and she GAVE THEM ALL TO A HOSPITAL!!! Can imagine the torcher the would have to endured, careless heavey handed kids with access to felt tip pens :enraged:

I only have one childhood pony left but I only had 2 as a child to begin with.  Ponies weren't a big thing with me as a kid so - provided I could keep my childhood Raincurl - I'd rather keep my adult collection.

well... my childhood collection is about 125 ponies and my adult collection is less than 25...
can i make a combination of the 2 and keep 50 ponies?

only keep most of the childhood ones, cuz they remind me of my grandparents and the ones that don't aren't worth enough to sell. and only 2 of my new ponies aren't customs... so those have a lot of meaning for me now.

I'd rather keep my current collection then have my childhood collection.  I didn't have that many, nor did I have anything rare or too special.  What I did have, I've mostly recovered.

Besides that, I do have the best and favorite pieces of my childhood porcelain unicorn figures ( most of which are antique ), and so am okay with that.

I didn't have any of my own but I use to play with my cousin's all the time (we'd visit and she was never there so my aunt would get her box down and let me play with them) and All I remember were boys. Lots and lots of boys.... of course I thought they were girls back then but eh.

Well since only 8 of my childhood ponies survived my childhood I would want to save my adult collection.  My freshman year of college was when my pony collecting really took off.  I blame G3's Star Catcher.  She was just so darn pretty.  At the end of each college year my parents would pick me up and be surprised at how many ponies I bought over the year.  I also had my box of favorites that came to college and were displayed on a shelf.  A lot of my herd have memories attached and I wouldn't want to miss out on that.

I think I would simply keep my childhood ponies that I have lost because they were a part of my childhood. I really love my current ponies though its not the same.

I might give up some of my adult collection to get back some of my childhood ponies (fortunately I still have all of my childhood ponies, so this is just a theoretical discussion :) ). But I wouldn't give up all my adult collection ponies to get back a few childhood ponies. Most of my adult collection I've had for 10-14 years, and I'm pretty sentimental about a lot of those ponies too.

As for picking between the two collections, it's really hard to say. I don't think I could give up my childhood ponies - but I have about 5 times as many ponies I've collected as an adult, and I'm really attached to most of them too. I can't imagine giving any of my ponies away!

This is also my view!!
