Title: What's your (American) dialect?
Post by: Corona on September 08, 2013, 02:58:27 PM
Found this posted on Facebook, it's a 140 question (25 if you want it shorter) quiz to place which area of the US your speech matches.

Here's the quiz. (http://spark.rstudio.com/jkatz/DialectQuizFull/)

Here's my results, I'm very very Californian (matching NorCal speech specifically) but apparently I speak Minnesotan too.

I've taken that quiz before...I am a mixing of Midwestern and Southern.  Makes since, as I'm from South Carolina but now live in Michigan :)

Lol, mine's so off.  Mesa, AZ is my most similar, and I'm from east Texas.  XD

I live in a mint greenish area of WI on your map, kinda below the thumb. We do not have a strong accent/drawl here. However, you can tell when someone is generally from an hour away from here in any direction...
I fall into the midwest; joliet, il being best match, but green bay is in my top 5 and I'm not far from there..

It wasn't loading for me earlier in the day. Am in the middle of taking it right now (140 question version). And will report back.

Should be interesting because I was born and have lived mostly in southern Cali and now northern Cali. While my family is from the south and Midwest.

Most of my map turned out to be orange but it is dark red where Illinois, Missouri, and Iowa meet.

My most similar cites are
Peoria IL    38.5
Olathe KS    38.5
Springfield IL    38.5
Reno NV    38.4
Overland Park KS    38.4

And my least similar are
Metairie LA    33.1
New Orleans LA    33.1
Baton Rouge LA    33.3
Lafayette LA    33.4
Jackson MS    33.7

I guess I'm just a huge mixture of the entire country

Funny it paired me with northern states and one of my least likely matches was New Orleans Louisiana. I'm from West Monroe.

My map was red to dark red for most of the West and into the plain states.
Top three cities where Fort Collins and Denver (C0) plus Riverside,CA.
Bottom three (with little to no matches) where all in NY and NJ. Ironic because while I do have family there (on my father's side), I've had the least amount of contact with them.

Darn, wanted to try the 140-question one later and see what I got.

I did manage to get the short version to load yesterday and my map looked pretty similar to yours Corona, with probably a bit more extension of the red into the Midwest.

Which is kind of weird, considering I've lived all my life in VT and NH...

I'm glad I finally for a chance to do it last night. My results:

Most Similar Cities:
1. Milwaukee, WI - 37.1
2. New Haven, CT - 37.0
3. St. Louis, MO - 36.9
4. Green Bay, WI - 36.9
5. Waterbury, CT - 36.9

Least Similar Cities:
1. Huntsville, AL - 33.6
2. Little Rock, AR - 34.0
3. Chattanooga, TN - 34.0
4. Birmingham, AL - 34.1
5. New Orleans, LA - 34.2

I'm confused why they put two WI cities when my map was blue/green around that area. I'm surprised that a Florida city wasn't in the top 5 since Florida is deep dark red on the map. I'm not surprised Florida is red, I speak Disney. XD

Awwwe I wanted to take it!
I do know my accent is very Mississippi though.  Well when it's active anyway (i.e. tired, mad, or drunk).  I can very easily detect the accents of fellow Mississippians and even pinpoint the regions.

It's gone for me, but I know I have a solid Michigan accent. High whiney A's and whatnot.

Though these particular maps identify where I grew up, in Detroit:

Roly Poly - #74
And "What do you call the night before Halloween" #110

Those are totally me. Devils Night and Roly Polys, lol

Weird!  I've lived in Wisconsin my whole life and I got this:

 Most Similar Cities
1    Syracuse NY    41.8
2    New Haven CT    41.7
3    Waterbury CT    41.5
4    Bridgeport CT    41.2
5    Rochester NY    41.1

Least Similar Cities
1    New Orleans LA    35.6
2    Metairie LA    35.6
3    Baton Rouge LA    36.2
4    Lafayette LA    36.6
5    Mobile AL    36.6

However, I have recently learned that a lot of the words and phrases used by my family aren't normally mid-western.  That's the only thing I can think of....

Oooh it let me do it finally!!

Most Similar Cities

3    Lubbock TX    35.5
4    Toms River NJ    35.5
5    Knoxville TN    35.6

HA. So my Michigan accent is more Wisconsin, I knew I had a high accent... Warren is right outside Detroit, near where I grew up, funny it's the least similar of the 5 most similar ones...

Okay it worked!  Places me in four cities in Wisconsin.  I've never lived there.  But I moved around a lot so many my answers were confusing.  Many times I could have picked more than one option.

Finally got it to work. I'm a born and raised Wisconsinite but apparently I sound like I'm from New York or Connecticut. Neat! Side note, my best friend is from Louisiana and half the time we don't know what the other is saying. I guess this explains why

I did the short version, might go back to do the long version when I've time.
My most similar cities:
1    Metairie LA    30.9
2    New Orleans LA    30.8
3    Baton Rouge LA    30.5
4    Lafayette LA    29.9

I live on the Alabama coast, so pretty close for me! But when I had a phone job & talked to people from all over, most said I didn't have a Southern accent at all, when they asked where I was from.

3    Toms River NJ    36.9

5    Yonkers NY       37.0

I'm a little surprised at the AZ cities but I'm from Sacramento, CA so Fresno and even Visalia make sense I suppose. I've always figured I sounded very NorCal but know I've picked up a few odd phrases/pronunciations from my Dad, who lived many years in Chicago, and my German Great Grandmother. I love these sort of surveys! Fun!

My accent is pretty weird, I grew up in Brooklyn, but have no Brooklyn accent!
My mom, however, is completely stereotypically from Brooklyn, even my baby brother seems to have a Brooklyn accent.
My mom says things like "burgah" = burger "tamata" =tomato, haha.

The map I got is mainly blue, and says my most similar cities are:

Most Similar Cities
1    Elizabeth NJ    61.1
2    Newark NJ    60.8
3    Yonkers NY    60.8
4    New York NY    60.1
5    Toms River NJ    59.6

So huh, apparently I have a more New Jersey sounding accent than New York. WEIRD. o_o;

Also, I noticed this.  My boyfriend likes to tease me for saying "forward", I say it "Foh-word" and I say ponytail instead of hair tie, which makes my boyfriend go "A ponytail is the thing you make with the hairtie!"

I also say "roon" instead of "roo-in" which my boyfriend will then always go "I don't know Mel, I don't think it had any ancient symbols on it. ;P"

2    Allentown PA    59.4
3    Toms River NJ    59.0

I'll admit I had some trouble with the "vowel questions," like this one:
Quote
the first vowel in "miracle"

[ɪ] as in "knit"
[iː] as in "near"
something between [ɪ] and [ɛ] as in "net"
[ɛ] as in "net"

So my results may not be accurate because there were a lot of them. I went with my best guesses, but they confused the crap out of me.

I say "tamata" too. Potato is also "patata" when I say it fast enough. :)

I didn't know the difference between a coffin and a casket... or that there was a name for the day before Halloween... or that there are words for when it rains when the sun is out. I blame living in Ohio for my lack of knowledge ;)

I just did the short version.  My results were pretty much as I expected; I speak a Midwestern dialect.  Though I grew up outside of St. Louis (eastern Missouri) and the test matched me up with western Missouri (and Oklahoma, for some reason).

I've studied English and communications, so I've noticed such things in the past.  For example, where I'm from, we have kind of a strange pronunciation for words like "grocery" and "nursery":  we pronounce them "groshery" and "nurshery"!  I'm aware of the difference and can use the more standard pronunciation if I want, though.
