I'm starting to plan a Pony Meet near Reading, Pennsylvania to be held in September 2014. I know this is more than a year away, but I'm trying to gauge interest to help with my planning. I'm looking into renting a place to hold the meet, so having a rough estimate of people interested will help me to find an appropriate size venue.

Location: near Reading, PA
-approx. 1.5hr west of Philadelphia
-approx. 2hr north of Baltimore
-approx. 4hr east of Pittsburgh
-located about 15 minutes from an exit of the PA turnpike.

Date: mid-late September 2014, on a Saturday

Questions:
-Will you bring anyone other than yourself (significant other, friend, parent, children, ect.)? If you plan to bring children, please let me know ages so that I can plan appropriate activities.

-How would you feel about paying a small admission to help cover costs of the venue (I'm thinking $5-10 depending on the cost of the venue)?

-Would you be willing to bring a food contribution?

-Have you attended any other pony events, such as a local meet or the Fair?

Also, please be aware that while all types of pony fans are welcomed, this will be an event like the "old school pony collector meets". If you are only interested in G4 & none of the earlier Generations, this may not be the meet for you.

I'd be on for this, I've been to a few meets before

I typical bring my boyfriend with me, sometimes a few other friends. I would be ok with paying a fee most meets I've been to have a $5 per person fee to cover cost of food and costs of the meet are some times subsided with raffles.

I can bring food no problem.

Will you have a custom contest? do you need donations for a prize table?

Being just an hour away from Reading, I know myself and Ginger would definitely go. :)

I'd prolly try and talk my boyfriend into coming, if not, I'd take Ginger as my date and my boyfriend could go hang out with hers. XD  I do have a 9 year old son, but I don't know if I'd take him or not.

A small admission fee is fine by me.

Seeing as I'm not a very good cook, do desserts count?

And I've never been to a "meet" outside of like... the Renn Faire. :)

Thank you, both! :)

For the questions so far:

Custom contest: Yes. I'm not a customizer myself, but I know that lots of people are, so I'd be happy to have a custom contest. No theme yet... still at the very beginning planning stage. ;)

Prize donations: Maybe. If people want to donate prizes, that would be great although I would not expect everyone to donate prizes if they don't want to.

Food donations: Don't worry, I'm not a good cook either, lol! Food donations don't have to be home made. ;) It could be drinks, snacks, desserts, or other store-bought food. Once plans are set, I'll make a food donation sign-up, so that we don't end up with 20 people bringing cookies & no one bringing anything else.

Questions are totally welcome & will definitely help me with planning. Thank you!!!

>.> I like making cookies though. Can I just sign up 20 times for cookies, then? lol. And there is nothing like homemade food. :)

What exactly is a pony meet?

GOING! I'm totally going. I live 15 minutes outside of Reading. I can't believe something is actually happening in this area!

Of course I would be willing to bring food and an admission if it's reasonable. I will not take my boyfriend though as he would not be amused. XD This would be my first pony meetup.

What exactly is a pony meet?

Usually a pony meet is a group of collectors that get together for the day to have fun with other collectors. People bring things to buy/sell/trade. There are usually games, sometimes a custom contest. Since its an all day thing (like maybe 9-10am until 4-5pm), there's typically food. It's basically an excuse to get together with people who share your love of ponies. :)

Answers:
-Will you bring anyone other than yourself:  Yes, most likely I will have one adult with me.  No children.

-How would you feel about paying a small admission to help cover costs of the venue:  Of course!

-Would you be willing to bring a food contribution?:  Yes, as long as I don't have to cook.    You REALLY don't want me to cook, hahaha!

-Have you attended any other pony events, such as a local meet or the Fair?  I attended the MD Pony Meet once (so long ago, I can't even believe it)

I'd possibly be interested. Reading's only an hour away, but I am also shy about stuff like this.

-I might conceivably bring a person, but if I did it'd only be one.
-I'd gladly bring food and pay a donation if I came
-Never been to a meet like this before.

I would totally be interested. I always miss the meets in Minnesota cause I come back to Philly for school! So this would be perfect. I've never gone to a pony meetup before, but I've wanted to ever since I heard they exist. I would probably bring my boyfriend. I think an admission fee sounds more than reasonable too, and I would try my best to bring food as well - I can't cook, but my boyfriend sure can.

You will find that a lot of pony people are shy, but please don't let that stop you. :) Pony people are generally a very friendly bunch, so even if you're shy people will make each other feel welcome.

Um, yes! I think you were reading my mind, KitKat because I was just thinking about a meet in this area the other day. :)

I would love to go with a plus one. I'm not a great cook but can contribute something for food. Depending on cost of the venue, I also wouldn't mind helping with that.

I have been to the Fair twice and had a blast both times. It would be really neat to meet other collectors around here in person.

Let me know what I can do to help!!!!

Exciting! I'd love to attend (assuming I could talk myself into it).  Like others, I'm shy in person.
I would bring one adult.
Food isn' t a problem.
A small entry fee is also no problem.

Hmm! Sounds like lots of fun! I live about 2 hours away from Reading, but my sister is going to live a lot closer to Reading. I hope I can make it, but like others, I am very shy!

If I were able to attend...
Will you bring anyone other than yourself:  Yes, an adult, but they might not stay with me.

How would you feel about paying a small admission to help cover costs of the venue:  That would be fine!
Would you be willing to bring a food contribution?:  Yes! I love to cook and bake.

Have you attended any other pony events, such as a local meet or the Fair?: No, I haven't been able to go anywhere yet.

Thanks, everyone! :) I can't say it enough: if you're shy, please don't let that stop you! I am a typically a very shy person, too. I've been going to pony meets for many years, and I assure you that *lots* of pony collectors are the same way! Making friends with common interests is a great thing, and I think the positive experience of making pony friends has helped me be less shy in other social situations, lol. It will be worth it, I promise!! ;)

I would love to go, but I wouldn't be able to know for certain until much closer to the date next year. Since I live north of Pittsburgh, it would likely be close to a 4.5 hour drive for me, which means I'd probably try to drive in the night before and make a weekend of it. But since I have two kids, I'd either have to bring both or find someone to stay with them. (In theory my husband could do it, but he never knows when he'll be called into work on a weekend. Fortunately, we do have family nearby.) So anywhere from 1 adult to 2 adults 2 kids.

Now going from there... I'd be more than happy to pay some sort of admission fee to help pay for what's needed. Since it's a long drive for me, I'd be unable to make food, but maybe I could figure something out like picking up drinks nearby or something.

I've been to MLP Fair twice, and a few informal meets back when I lived in California. I'd love to try to make this work if at all possible!

Post by: nessy_86 on August 15, 2013, 10:24:22 AM
It would be about a three hour drive for me (from Southern MD). I would seriously consider going depending upon date/time/etc. I would have to decide on driving up in the morning and back at night or staying a day.

I would bring my husband with me (he may not appreciate it, but he'll be alright!)

A small fee wouldn't be a big deal.

I could easily pack a cooler with me to bring in some food! I love baking and making a quick dish wouldn't be a problem!

I haven't been to any other pony meets, but I plan on attending the one in Virginia at the beginning of next month!

And to everyone who said they are shy-- I tend to be as well, but you can't let that stop you! What more could you ask for than a bunch of fellow MLP lovers in the room with you! :D :frolic:

-Would you be willing to bring a food contribution?most definitely

-Have you attended any other pony events, such as a local meet or the Fair?all of the  above

definitely interested in helping with planning etc btw too!

For those traveling: I will get info for hotels in the area to help with planning on staying over or driving in one day.

For those bringing someone who may not want to stay: I will gather info on interesting things to do in the area to keep bored husbands happy (lol).

Thanks again to everyone who has replied! If anyone is reading & not sure, please feel free to reply or send me a pm. :) I've talked to several people who have not posted either here or at the TP, and believe it or not... there are over 30 people interested in attending!

...and ponylady, you are always welcome if you decide to take a road trip!! ;) Of course, I completely understand not wanting to drive 7hr for a pony meet. :P

I'd love to go to this...I don't have many( really any..) friends, so this would be a good opportunity to meet people!

Most likely I would bring my boyfriend, he's a Brony, but a "normal" one, haha.
I'd be ok with paying a small cost, if it wasn't too expensive, and I'd definitely bring some food, my boyfriend is an excellent cook, so I could ask if he'd like to make anything as well. ^_^

I've attended a few conventions....Bronycon January 2012, Big Apple Ponycon, Bronycon 2013.....but I haven't attended any meetups.

I started collecting with G3, so no problems with early gens for me! My boyfriend prefers G4,because that's what got him into the fandom, but has no problems with older gens, and I'm sure he'd be interested in learning more about them. He's not a collector like me, but he is a cartoon/animation fan.

Hi Melipuffles, glad to have you & your boyfriend interested! :) I hope my original post didn't come off as "anti-Brony". What I meant was more along the lines of not wanting people who are only into G4 to be disappointed in an event not solely focused on G4. :) All pony fans are welcomed & I want all pony fans to have a good time. :bigups:

Hey! I would really like to be a part of this, but I'm not sure if I'm still going to be living on this coast at that time. That being said, if I *am* able to attend, I'd have no problem paying admission and bringing store-bought food. (I can't cook to save my life!) I'd be up to bringing my boyfriend and he'd probably be open to going, but getting him over to this coast is another story!

3 hours is a manageable distance for an overnight for a meet so I might be interested. :D

Questions:
-Will you bring anyone other than yourself - Possibly Significant other but he's not much into ponies so it will most likely just be myself. :P

-How would you feel about paying a small admission to help cover costs of the venue (I'm thinking $5-10 depending on the cost of the venue)? Small admission cost is fine by me. I'd rather pay $10 to make sure it doesn't rain on us. :P

-Would you be willing to bring a food contribution? Of course I would be willing to bring a food contribution...especially if its the dessert kind. I love an excuse to bake.

-Have you attended any other pony events, such as a local meet or the Fair? I attended one or two meet in NY and a few of the fairs.

Question: I know some meets are large enough that they can accommodate people having their own trading/selling space tables (I never went to the MD meet but from what I remember of pictures I thought people had tables...). Were you planning to try and make the meet of that scale or smaller?

Will there be space/time for selling/trading of ponies?

I'm excited at the prospect either way. :D

Hi Foxtale, glad to have you aboard! :) To answer your question about tables & buying/selling/trading... yes, definitely! :cheer: I'm looking at renting a place that will have tables available (because I would definitely not have room at my house for a bunch of people & tables, lol). Right now, I've got over 40 people that are interested between replies here & the TP, as well as people I've talked to personally... so even if everyone interested can't make it, I think we will still have a pretty large group. :)

Questions:

If anyone, I would bring my sister, who will be in college then, so only if she's willing to break away from the college life. I couldn't drag my boyfriend anywhere near a pony meet. An admission fee is fine. Bringing food is fine. This would be my first meet. I used to have a much crappier work schedule, so nothing really ever worked out.

Hi everyone! Since this thread got bumped, I guess I should post an update (or lack there of, lol).

I'm still aiming to have a meet sometime in September 2014. I've had to take a break from planning & most pony business (other than selling), as I've been hit left & right with real life problems the last 2 months. I'm hoping that things will settle down soon, and I will have some time & money to devote to securing a location, as well as making some more official plans. :bigups:

Thank you to everyone for your interest, suggestions, and everything! I will update as soon as I can with details. :)

Update for me: I was asked to be in a wedding in Missouri in September 2014. I'm going to try to make both events, unless they fall on the same day. Then, it's the wedding for me. <3

I'm interested, but I have a feeling my husband will think it's too far.  There's also a chance we may have moved back to Michigan by then, so I'd consider us pretty darned tentative.

Questions:
-Will you bring anyone other than yourself (significant other, friend, parent, children, ect.)? If you plan to bring children, please let me know ages so that I can plan appropriate activities. - I usually bring the hubby with me to pony meets, I might have to come to this one alone though if he refuses to go that far.

-How would you feel about paying a small admission to help cover costs of the venue (I'm thinking $5-10 depending on the cost of the venue)? - absolutely reasonable, if you put all the effort into it, you shouldn't have to pay for everything too!

-Would you be willing to bring a food contribution? - of course!

-Have you attended any other pony events, such as a local meet or the Fair? - yup

Also, please be aware that while all types of pony fans are welcomed, this will be an event like the "old school pony collector meets". - my favorite kind!  :)

Hi Pony Friends! Now that 2014 is officially here, I'm hoping to start making some concrete plans for the Reading Pony Meet.

I've started to look at a few possible venues, and I'd like to get some input. One option is an outdoor pavilion in a park (will look for something with indoor bathrooms, no port-a-pots). Another option is a small reception/meeting room at a hotel. Tentative dates would be Saturday September 13th or 20th (date may be determined by venue availability).

Also I have set up an email address for the meet:

readingponymeet AT gmail DOT com
(please remove spaces & make obvious symbol substitutions)

If you are interested in attending the meet, please email me with the information below. Even if you are not sure you can attend, this info will greatly help me with planning. :) I will also send out group emails for updates on date, location, additional planning, ect as the time gets closer. Thanks everyone!!

----------
Real name:

ID on the boards:

Age: (ok to make a general estimate here if you are shy about numbers)

Location:

Level of interest:
-wouldn't miss it
-would like to, but will decide closer to that time
-it's a long shot, but I'll see

Have you attended a Pony Meet, Fair, or other gathering before?

Will you bring anyone with you? significant other, parent, friend, children (if children, please list ages so that I can plan appropriate activities)

Do you or any of your guests have any special needs, dietary requirements, life threatening allergies, ect? (This is not meant to be intrusive. This is to make sure that everyone is as comfortable, happy, and safe as possible)

Do you plan to bring ponies & any pony-related items to sell or trade, ie Will you need a table?

Top 5 favorite ponies?

Any other info you'd like to share about yourself? (I have known some of you for years, others I'll be meeting for the first time. This question is optional, please don't feel pressured, lol!)

Nah, do either or! :) I mean, if I can't get the funds together, then no wedding for me. Driving two days to Missouri versus driving two HOURS to Reading, not that bad. Haha.

Thanks to everyone who replied or emailed me. :cheer: Having a better estimate of exactly how many people are interested will be important for me to find an appropriately sized location.

That being said, if anyone has any input about the dates or locations quoted below, I'd love to hear it. :flow:

I just saw this thread.  I'm new-ish to the Arena so I've never been to a meet before, but I think it could be fun :).  I'll make sure to email the address above to coordinate.

Pony meets are the best! And KKV is a wonderful hostess. You should go! I'm going to check the dates against existing commitments and try to go myself if at all possible. Good friends, awesome pony fun.. What's not to love!

Hi There,

I'm totally new to public pony anything so I'm totally there!  I'm from the Scranton Area, probably 1-1.5 hours away from Reading.

Questions:
-Will you bring anyone other than yourself (significant other, friend, parent, children, ect.)? If you plan to bring children, please let me know ages so that I can plan appropriate activities.
Yeah!  I have 4-5 friends that would likely go and possibly one five-year old girl.

-How would you feel about paying a small admission to help cover costs of the venue (I'm thinking $5-10 depending on the cost of the venue)?
Of course as long as it's reasonable.  Can't expect everything to be free

-Would you be willing to bring a food contribution?
I've never been to anything like this so if a post on "needs" or "wants" was placed, I'd be happy to fill an order

-Have you attended any other pony events, such as a local meet or the Fair?
Never!  I didn't really know these things existed.  It would be great to see this in Northeast PA :)

Why I didn't notice this before....  Mid September is my wedding!  I really hope I make it.  I'm getting married on Saturday the 13th in September.  The week after may still be honeymoon week.  Is a date set yet?  The 27th I could definitely go!  It would suck to miss it.

:cloud: ***Update: Canceled for 2014*** :cloud:

I sent this out in a group email to everyone that replied to my email request, but I wanted to include this message for those following the thread that had not emailed me.

Dear Pony Friends,

I've very sorry to say that I will not be able to host a meet this September. At this point, I just don't have the resources (both time and financial) to plan an event right now. This has been a whirlwind year for me between balancing a very intense new job and time with my family, and I simply can't devote enough time to make this as special as many of the other Pony Meets I've attended.

It has been a long time dream of mine to host a Pony Meet, and with the overwhelming amount of interest it's clear that Pennsylvania is long over due for a Pony Meet. That said, I will be putting my effort into planning something for 2015 either in early Spring or Fall.

Thank you for your understanding & I hope to see some of you at the Fair!

Aww, that's okay. It takes a lot of time, money and energy to put into a meet, I completely understand. Money was the biggest reason I didn't do one again this spring. But I will see you at the fair anyway!

Not sure how I missed this thread, but I would be 100 percent interested in attending and would be happy to help (as much as I can from Pittsburgh) whenever you are able to have a meet!
