Title: The mystery of Mimic's appeal
Post by: Tap Dancer on July 16, 2013, 11:58:39 AM
Well, it's a mystery to me, anyway. When I was new to the MLP forums in the late '90s, Mimic wasn't very popular. People said her pose is stupid, her colors are ugly, etc. I've always been "eh" about her. Don't love her or hate her. I doubt I'll ever own her because I'm not looking, and if I find her, I'd be happy to sell. The "value" of a pony isn't important to me. With everything I collect, I only choose what I think looks good. Every collection I've ever had is rather small because I'm so picky. Anyway, to get back on track... It seems like people really love Mimic now. Do you really think she's pretty, are you only interested because she's hard-to-find, or do you dislike her? Did you dislike her at one time and then changed your mind? Value aside, do you actually like her for her looks?

I'd really like to you hear your thoughts because she was really disliked by many people back in the day. LOL. I mean, I know I haven't been around the boards much over the last several years, but it's like night and day with the Mimic love.

She is a childhood pony for me, that is the only reason I have her. I will not sell her, but I would not pay her going rate either. I think her color is cool but I hate her pose, a lot.

I like her because I like the colours, and find the symbol pretty neat. I've never thought about the pose... I guess it's a bit odd but I don't dislike it or anything :)

I don't own her, and nor am I actively looking. She's not that high in my priority list really. Like you I get things I specifically like rather than need for sets etc, and I'm sure one day I might set on a hunt for her, but at the moment nope. She's just another pony that could look good on my shelf in the future ^.^

I don't get it either. I had her to complete the TE set. I happened to get mine for next to nothing in about 2003-04. *shrug* She is prettier in person than in pics, but not enough to warrant her price.

I love Mimic. I always have. My cousin had her when we were kids and I would ask to play with her as often as possible. For me, it's her color combinations. The bright key lime green with the red, yellow, pink and green hair just looks gorgeous together. Her pose is probably one of my favorite unicorn poses but it can be a pain to make a pony in that pose stand correctly sometimes.  :)

I used to be like 'meh' don't need her or want her.

Was like that for 4 years. Then last month I had to have her :P

My excuse is I love green ponies *stares at Minty army*

One day I want a Mimic army!

I like her a lot.  I like her colors and the parrot symbol.  I want her because I like her and I love the tropical look.  But she isn't my favorite and in the current Derby Race she would be my last pick.  I never disliked her back in the day, but I have also never been crazed over her either.

I love Mimic because she has a Macaw on her tush.  My parents had an aviary when I was a kid, and I raised baby macaws, so, yeah, there's a connection there.

Then, my mother has this story when she was working Kmart after I was born but still was a very young infant, of stocking MLP's, and stocking a whole load of Mimics.  She had wanted to buy one, but money was tight ( and it always was ) and she had no clue whether I'd be into it or not.  By the time I was, most of my ponies came from the thrift store.

I love her colors. I like that she had her own my little pony episode "The Golden Horseshoes." :) I think shes up there in my list of pretty ponies. Shes in a unique unicorn pose. (which I think that pose would look awesome solid gold like an award.) I have her and shes very special to me.

Mimic was one of my childhood ponies, I never knew she was rare until I didn't have her anymore.

I like her because she has a parrot symbol! I've always had a parrot somewhere in my life, and I work at a bird rehab center, so I'm big on the bird symbol ponies (G3 Sunrise Song, G4 Feathermay, G1 Skydancer, Brightglow..).

Unfortunately, she is mega $$$, so I don't have one, even though I think she is really really pretty ^^;

I like her a lot. She was my grail pony in 2011, and a wonderful member here (Centifolia) sold her to me. Made my dream come true. I only found out about her existence in 2011 though. It was the icy green, tropical hair and parrot that did it for me. I hate the pose personally, and I hate the hype, but she's extraordinarily pretty, although I would've preferred her with normal (Not TE) eyes....

I would only want her to complete my TE collection  :lookround: That would be about it. She's cute & all, but I think all ponies are cute. She's nothing to write home about, if you know what I mean?

I really love her colors and her pose is one of my favorite unicorn poses, and twinkle eyes are up there in my five favorite sets, but I'm not sure I'll ever buy her because she's so expensive.

I think the parrot symbol lies at the center of the Mimic love. It's a pretty symbol, but also pretty unique. Combine that with the fact that she's green, which is sadly underused color for ponies, and that she's a unicorn, and I think that explains it to me. She's just the right combination of unique and beautiful. If the viewer loves TEs as well, that just seals the deal.

Personally its the parrot symbol - I have a macaw who I adore [even if he is the biological child of a serial killer x crocodile] so there is a personal connection.

But as for why generally she is more pricey and popular...why is Red Roses so expensive in comparison to Sweet Lily, Lemon Treats in comparison to Sugar Sweet, Diamond Dreams in comparison to Sunnybunch or Baby Leaper in comparison to Baby Countdown. Its just that sometimes some ponies have a "collectability" about them and that increases their desirability which in turn makes them more expensive.

Well the main reason why I wanted her was because she was popular and sought after.  It's nice to have a pony that is rare or hard to find or maybe even just popular.

Another reason why I wanted her is because I like her color combination and the parrot of course.  Plus she appears in only one episode.

When I was in the pony community, 96-2000, she was still kind of a hot thing. Here's a page where someone discusses her and the reasons from way back:  http://www.angelfire.com/ak/mirosuki/Customizing.html

I think she's just appealing to some people, really. And then some people love the whole "I gotta have it, it's rare" mentality.

I had her when I was a kid.  She was a gift for some holiday or other.  I never really liked her much, but as I got older I really began to like her.  I have 3 now - childhood one which is kept apart from my collection (as are all my childhood ponies), one for display with normal TE's, and one for display with my "swag" ponies, lol!

I love her!

For me, it's her unique colors and her pose. She's in one of my favorite G1 poses. She just looks so joyful! I love all the ponies blessed with that pose... Princess Sparkle, Bangles, Milky Way...

Cat that is the best description of a large parrot, ever. Having been around them and love them. Yeah, you summed it up.

Back on topic. I had the chance to own her when I was a kid. My Mom and I where in a Toys R Us doing birthday shopping, for one of my girl cousins. I picked out a MLP for her and was told I could get one for myself. Or I could get a new Hot Wheels car. Sadly the wheels won out that day.  Clearly remembering holding her in my hand and debating, "green parrot pony or a car". Wish I could go back and undo that choice.

Have always liked her coloring and symbol, it was so different. Compared to the other G1s. Maybe someday I'll get around to owning her.

I love Mimic because as a kid, she was my ABSOLUTE favorite pony from the series.  Yes, she was only in one episode, but I fell in love with her from that one.  I wanted her as a kid, and would have had her if we would have been able to find her in stores, and never did.  This love for Mimic never went away and she was my first HTF pony I sought out when I first started collecting.

I hated her green color when I first started collecting, thus didn't care for her at all for many years. Though in the past couple of years, she's started growing on me. I will probably never have her though since she's so crazy expensive, but if I ever came across her at a fleamarket or something I would be pretty excited. ^-^

:) Sometimes it baffles me that I love him so much when he seems to have one goal in life which is to remove my eye balls [in fact the eye balls of every living creature and non living toy around him] and every single bit of skin on my body - but hes my baby :P

I loved her as a kid, and after starting collecting ponies again I was hoping to get her soon. Sadly that's not going to happen because there is no way I'm paying that much for a plastic pony, no matter how pretty. Besides, Fizzy is such as pretty as she is with her green color and twinkle eyes.
Title: Re: The mystery of Mimic's appeal
Post by: Moonracer on July 16, 2013, 03:30:37 PM
Personally, I like Mimic for a couple reasons. First one, is her colors: I really like her color palette, it's got a really nice tropical feel to it, without it being too jarring, like on some other ponies I've seen. Next is her symbol - it's really cute. Thirdly, it's the fact that she's a TE: I really love twinkle-eyed ponies, they're really unique and mesmerizing with those diamod eyes of theirs... :D

At the same time though, it's actually quite weird how insanely popular she's become. I mean, she is quite a HTF, but she isn't as rare as some other ponies like Ice Crystal, Sweet Scoops or Rapunzel, since there's been quite a number of auctions with her, and from what I've seen, several people had enough luck of finding her in thrift stores, ebay auction lots and such.

I guess that it mostly has to do with all those stories surrounding her, making her appear to be this "rarest pony in existence".

I hadn't realized Mimic was even in the series! I watched it as a kid, but I didn't remember her. I just went and found the episode on youtube though! If you can get past the bad quality, it was a nice nostalgic trip.

I'm sort of " meh" about her at the moment.  I like her symbol, don't dislike her colors and hate her pose.  I have no opinion on "The Golden Horseshoes."  :)

If I could find her cheap, I'd be happy but I'm not willing to spend the big bucks on her.

To me, Mimic is just one of those ponies that I don't necessarily want, but if I found her for a decent price somewhere, I would buy her. Her colors are unique and pretty and I like her symbol. I guess I'm just not the biggest fan of the twinkle eyes. ;)

I got mine for a Really good price...plus I LOVE green ponies! I Love unicorns so it's a win/win for me. I don't collect to many adult ponies but she is one I'm hanging on to. I use to have two of her but decided to part with one due to limited space and more funds for the wingers and babies :)  I'm not to fond of the pose but everything else is great.

My cockatiel can be a psychopath.

Mimic was in Quest for the Golden Horseshoes so with regards to that she came across as a 'fragile' lovely pony. Even though you barely see her.

The bird is also a factor, everyone loves a psychotic talking bird

Mine was about a third of the going rate in the UK. She is a re-hair and has a few little marks on her. I didn't buy her for value or for favoritism, Bright Eyes is my favorite TE pony and she was harder to find.

As Cat said why is Red Roses more popular than Sweet Lily, there's one in most sets that is more popular.

She's got to be one of most unusual G1s, plus interest in her is definitely infectious--I think the Mimic mania offers a great study in what becomes popular.

I don't think I gave Mimic two thoughts back in 1987 when she came out.  I remember seeing her in the foldout for that year, but I never saw her in person.

I preferred (and still prefer) pink and purple ponies :)

I don't mind her, I actually kinda like her pose (ducks from being pelted) and her colors are alright (just because there really aren't too many green ponies) but I do not love her. I do not own her myself, and if I found one I would probably trade or sell her for more coveted ponies. so eh, i'm on the fence.

I'm still a relatively new collector (about two years, I think), but I like her - I think her colours are pretty cool and I want her to help complete my TE's (about 4 ponies to go).

I guess I'm perhaps also a little under the influence of the grail status she currently holds, she's kind of one of those goal/super satisfaction to own ponies, but I'm a stingy buyer at the best of times, so unless I stumble upon her in a thrift store or something she's unlikely to end up in my collection anytime soon

The green wouldn't have been too popular with little girls, I think. That's why I think she wasn't so popular. I however, adore her colours! Her pose isn't my favourite but nor do I dislike it. I love my Mimic
