While I was working on Estrella a couple of months ago, I decided that I was going to try my hand at another classic, popular piece of artwork, Hokusai's The Great Wave off Kanagawa (http://The Great Wave off Kanagawa) with the 2nd Styling Size bait I had. And while I absolutely love how she turned out, I'll be the first to admit that she terrified me to work on. With Estrella and the other Starry Night ponies, I didn't have to worry about lines. But with Nami? Every detail had to be crisp and clean. It was nervewracking, and her painting alone was about 16-18 hours.

She started off airbrushed with a coat of a pale, creamy yellow, since most of the prints of the woodcut (including the one I have hanging in my bedroom) are shown with a yellow/gray sky. I didn't like the way it looked (I'm not a fan of a blue and yellow color combination to start with), but then found some versions with a gray sky and did that instead. She's been airbrushed with gray and blue, with some of the yellow still peeking through in spots on her legs.
And then there's all those tiny details.

The waves do go all the way around (I improvised), but I neglected to get pictures of her non-display side, since, you know, it's non-displayed. Oh, and Nami's been rehaired with about seven hanks of hair in four shades of DH Nylon: Lapis Sapphire, Stormy Skies, After Midnight, and something else I can't remember off the top of my head, because I threw out most of the bags already. I think it was Bluebell.
She is for sale, make me a serious offer before I stick her up on Etsy and jack her price up ;)

I have two more ponies in this size that ate being worked on: one is going to be She-ra's horse, Swift Wind, and the other will probably be another art pony if I can ever decide on an artist to use.
-
Oh man I want her so bad so my Kanagawa wave pony Hokusai can have a bigger friend! Yours is absolutely fantastic!

Not quite spot on, sadly. Shortly after I posted her, I realized that I forgot the white spots of spray that are in the original painting. If someone buys her, I'll ask them if they want the dots added before she gets packed up.

Awesome! I would suggest Mucha (love him) but I fear you'd murder me, cos, the linework!! ;) I wonder what a Mondrian pony would look like? Though probably hard to draw straight lines on a such a curvy surface...
-
At least Mucha's linework is more flowy and "forgiving"! Mondrian would be interesting to try, if I could get the lines to be straight like they're supposed to be. Girlyponce once suggested Murakami, which I think would be a blast to try, and I'd love to at some point do another Van Gogh. So many ideas, so little time!

Nice work! Even my BF was impressed!
