Title: Sets you don't want?
Post by: Sugar on June 15, 2013, 06:43:55 AM
Just wondering...

Imagine price and availability weren't an issue... would there still be any G1 sets you just wouldn't want to collect?  And why?

For instance, while I'm snapping up the newborn twins, I'm just not so keen on the Drink 'n' Wet babies.  They have cute colours, but the perpetual open mouth doesn't appeal to me. -_-

How about you?

I've decided not to collect sea ponies, they just really don't do it for me, although I LOVE sea ponies in real life.
Hmm, I actually think that might be it as far as G1s are concerned :)

There are a few sets I actively avoid:
BBEs -Does it need an explanation?
Eyelash Princesses -Don't like the pose, can't stand those huge caterpillars.
Flutter Ponies, Sweetheart Sisters etc. -Can't stand the slimmed down, "Barbie-fied" body type and most of them are too pastel and girly for my liking.
Fancy Mermaid Ponies -I'm not really sure what these are, they don't look like ponies or seahorse to me.
Ballerina Ponies -I suppose a poseable pony should appeal to me, but they look disproportionate in my eyes.
Drink N' Wet Babies -Don't care for the weird open mouths and the entire concept of a pony that needs diapers changed.
Sweet Talkin' Ponies -Ponies don't talk! Duh.
Princesses -I really dislike tinsel.

I don't collect sea ponies and Sweetheart Sisters. In fact I've sold all the ones I've ever acquired through the years. For the SHS, I just hate their design and how they look. Just not G1 enough for me (too skinny and their faces look funny). As for the sea ponies, they are ok and I remember playing with them in the bath as a kid, but they don't display well (unless you have all their shells, and babies don't display well even with their floats).

Ah durr, of course, BBE ponies :P I am only interested in these after they've been "fixed" by the likes of Pinkkittywinks

I've been sticking srictly to the regular ponies that do not have extra features or different looks, so as not to get carried away! I have been having a really hard time talking myself out of the sea ponies and the sparkle ponies. I do collect the so-softs from time to time, but I have plans to deflock mine to give them that original look.

I have a lot of these, but I have changed my mind about ponies in the past and won't say it won't happen again :P

Babies of any kind, including Baby Sea ponies. Exception: I have a Baby Crumpet. Baby Pony Friends are welcome.
Male ponies - mine is a lesbian separatist herd  :|
Mermaids
1st set of Rainbow ponies - none that appeal to me here
Wingers for now - there is a chance that I change my mind on these (it has happened in the past), but I don't like their, ahem, infantile look.
Surprise Twins Mommy - does she count as a set?
Any B'nG ponies
Secret Surprise
Precious Pocket and Sweet Talkin' Ponies - the poses don't appeal to me
2nd set of princesses - I might have to take this back as Pristina and Moondust are pretty, but very low down in priority at the moment
Light-up Sparkle
Sweetheart Sisters
Romance ponies
Cookery ponies
I don't like 75% of the Flower ponies either, but there's one I want back - Snowdrop. I lost her in a stupid trade back when I started collecting and have missed her.
Happy Tails - there's something I don't understand here, aren't horses supposed to twirl their tails when they are irritated? Then again, I guess "Cranky Tails Ponies" wouldn't have been a big hit.
Trim 'n Grow Dream Beauties - I thought I didn't like the Rainbow Beauties either, but there is Skysplasher.
High Flying Dream Beauties - I have two but intend to get rid of them sooner or later
Anything in the Pony Bride pose
Anything in the Gingerbread pose - exception: SS Shady because I like her as a character
Tootsie pose - exceptions: 7-Tales Bright Eyes because I want to complete the set, Cherries Jubilee because cherries
Moondancer pose

I wonder if I got everybody? Also, I'm not actively looking for most pegasi. I don't dislike them, they just fail to appeal to me. Unlike some collectors, I love Flutter ponies and adult ballerinas. I guess I would sell most random nirvanas or try and trade them for Lemon Drops.

Edit: I've forgotten at least the following:
Nurse Ponies
Rollerskaters

Sets I actively won't touch:

BBEs - I am genuinely freaked out by them.
Eyelash Princesses - Hate them caterpillars.
Drink N' Wet Babies -Not an open pony mouth fan.

No Drink n Wets, Sweet Talkin' (or anything else that takes batteries), Ballerina, Dream Beauties, Soda Sippin', Secret Surprise and...I guess those are the only hard rules. Even BBEs could be fixed, maybe (well, of course they can but I've had one sitting on my desk unfinshed for the longest time...)

I'm not overly fond of the pearlised baby ponies. The princesses Groucho Marx can also take a hike.

Overall I like most G1s, but there are some I like less than others

-BBEs, I think they could have designed these somehow better, piggys don't look creepy to me at all like BBEs do
-Drink 'n Wets, don't like the holes
-Newborns, foals should have longer legs in my opinion
-Teeny Tinies, the same reason as above
-Pony Friends, they just aren't ponies

I can't think of any US sets I wouldn't collect. It's mainly some Nirvanas I wouldn't collect just because it would mean a lot of the time I would just be getting variants of the same ponies over and over again. So I only get the ones that really appeal to me. Like I don't think I'll ever collect piggy ponies.... though I've said that all along about g2s and they are slowly growing on me.... so who knows....  :)

There are definitely some I am not ever going to collect and they seem to be the same as other people haha:

- Drink 'n Wets
- BBE (and yet I seem to keep accumulating them... they freak me out but they keep find their way to me)
- Sweet Talkin'
- Eyelash Princesses
- Secret Surprise
- Happy Tails

Dream Beauties and seaponies. Some of them are pricey and I don't really like them.

Nope want them all... Well I guess I'm not super serious about Dream Beauties as I only own two of them - both of them flea market finds... Eventually I'll get around to them....

All sea ponies. They cant stand and look a little bit boring.
I collect only BBE babies so  I desided not to buy regular ones.
Flutters ! Dont like those sloppy wing fixing. But they are very pretty.

They're not a popular set, but to me they have sentimental value and have some of the coolest accessories ever (like earrings :P )

Furthermore, not a lot of people seem to have a passion for Dream Beauties. Personally I love love love the Sweet Perfume set.

Hmm, I must be strange or something.

Most of the sets mentioned here over and over are some of my favorite sets.

I think it's because of the memories I have of playing with them as a child. I loved my baby ballerina pony and my caterpillar-eyed princess. =P

I'll never forget when I twirled my Dance n Prance pony's hair too close to mine and it got caught. I was so shocked when my mom cut the pony's hair instead of mine. I thought for sure she would cut my hair since it would grow back and the pony's would not.  5-year-old logic I guess. :P

Anyway, they are all ponies to me, I love them all, and they are all welcome in my herd! :)

Hmmph! Same!  The perfume puffs and the 2nd year princesses were sets that I used to think 'why??!!' but then, they of course grew on me in a big way!!

There are some sets that I don't care for though, and that hasn't changed over my collecting time. I'm not a huge 'baby pony' person. There are a few key sets that I wanted and have almost completed, but that's really about it.

Seaponies don't do it for me, nor 'gimicky' kinds of ponies (soda sipping, dance n prance etc). I'm also not particularly fond of so-softs (dodges fakies!!), except to de-flock...  and now I'm really running lol!  :bolt:

I think the only ones I wouldn't buy are the Princess Ponies with eyelashes, Glittery Sweetheart sisters, Sweet Kisses US ponies, Bridal Ponies, or color swirl ponies.  BBE do not bother me so much that I couldn't own one. I am not fond of the Sweet Celebrations family line at all.   The color combinations and symbols really bother me.  I just can't say though that there is any particular pony that I dislike so intensely that even if someone gave me one I would be very unhappy.  I just don't get in that place with ponies.  I think my reasons for not liking the above is pose and I didn't like the glittery bodies of the Glittery line.  I think if they had used more colorful glitter I would have liked those as I have no problem at all with their pose and body structure.  I dislike the bridal pony head and so the others i mentioned are all the same style.  Then lastly symbols. I didn't like the Kisses symbols on that style of pony and prefer the UK versions.  While its hard for me to dislike many pony sets, I totally get why some don't like certain ones.

I find what I love about MLP is how they didn't make the line realistic and stuck with 95% being fantasy.  The ponies take you into a wonderful world of imagination where horses can do things that real horses can not.  I love the fact that they are not realistic and I love the fact they made them so adorable.  Some of my favorite ponies are actually the ones that are not "pony" like.  For example the soda sippin ponies, roller skating ponies, ballet ponies, Pegasus, unicorn, dance and prance ponies and happy tails ponies.  Hasbro explored many interests/hobbies and talents in the creation of each line.  So, even with ponies I wouldn't normally care for too much, I can totally respect that others like them because, they are all fun and creative in their own way.  Since they were so versatile, kids everywhere could find a pony that fit them and enjoy hours of play.  Its hard to point out ponies I don't like, because, just like I always come to Tootsie's defense..lol...all the ponies are quite special.  I just love the ballet ponies even though I don't have them.  My reason for loving them is I have professional ballet dancers in my family.  So for the kids out there that loved dance and the work behind ballet..how nice they have a pony to symbolize that for them.  Since I love Mermaids, the mermaid ponies appeal to me.  I would have played with them for hours had I had them.  They are fantasy..it was like blending the neat concept of a pony and adding the mermaid to it.  That was just genius in my opinion.  There are plenty of little girls I take care of that adore mermaids and I am sure it was that way in the 80's too.   Its just hard to dislike most of them really.

I hate drink and wet babies too!

Also, I don't care for Sundae Best ponies, Soda Sipping ponies, any talking/mechanical pony, Piggies, or any pony with a long skinny body style (G2's, eyelash ponies or bridal ponies).

Why, that would have shocked me as well!

This has happened to me as well. When I started collecting I was SURE I'd focus on the EARLY ponies and leave the gimmicky ones alone. LOLOLOL

The ponies take you into a wonderful world of imagination where horses can do things that real horses can not. ^ This. I don't remember ever "playing horse" with my ponies. My Little Pony was about magical adventures.

I want 1 from every set in the US/UK release, their is sets that are at the bottom of my like list, but still love having them in my herd. I have just got the last DNW baby, so pleased I now have the set, and don't really like the BBE's but will be out to find them all at some point.

Yes! A lot - but I really just have ponies that I remember as a kid, and that is mostly the early releases. I guess the ones I never will buy is:

BBE's: To me they are not really MLP as we never had those ponies in Norway
1st release of rainbows: None of those really appeal to me....
First tooth baby ponies: I have baby Splashes and baby North Star, but those are childhoods, but I really just like the original babies...mostly.
So softs: Never understood why they had to be So softs... *sigh*
Sea ponies: I had Ripple as a kid, and even though I loved her - I always thought it was so difficult to play with her.... That kind of rubbed off on me and made them less popular to me... even as a grown-up

And of course most of the later released ponies. I would love to get some TAFs though. Those are the only ones I don't have that I might like to get ;)

I'm not that into quite a few pony characteristics, my ideal collection would only number about 60. Here are the things that definitely don't float my boat....

First Tooth
Peek a Boo
Beddy Bye Eyes
Teeny Tiny Pose
G1 Peagsus Firefly Pose
Anything wedding themed ponies! Ha!
Brush n Grow
So soft
All Sea Ponies
Pearly
Happy Tails
Flutter
Pocket
Merry-go-round
Fancy Pants
Windy Wing
Sweetheart Sister
Dream Beauties
Glow n Show
Tropical (can't cope with the eyeshadow)
Any in Collector's Pose (weird I know but I collect the babies instead, mainly Euro versions)
Magic Message
Dance and Prance
etc

I also have certain themes that I like and others that I don't. I really like the celestial bodies and weather, music, flowers and cakes but not so much occupations, grooming, celebrations especially weddings.

It's just personal preference at the end of the day.

I'm shocked how many people don't like sea ponies! I never would have guessed! Well, more for the rest of us then!

I can't think of any I would actively avoid if the price were no issue. But I can't say I particularly like the:
Sweetheart Sisters, at least, the first set
Dance n Prance (they just seem boring, though I like their accessories!)
adult or baby ballerinas
Merry-Go-Round (I know they have different designs, but they still all look the same to me)
Baby Fancy Pants
Magic Message (I'm just not fond of the "magic" symbols)
Mermaids

There are probably some others, but like I said, if money weren't an issue, I'd probably still buy all of them anyway.

Edit: Oh, and not a set, but I actually really dislike Rapunzel. I've even seen one in person, but I just don't really like her. I might actually avoid her even if I could afford her.

Just wondered what it is about these ponies you're not keen on?

I have perhaps said this before in some "least favourite poses" thread... The Gingerbread pose looks almost like a different breed of ponies, or a male pose, maybe because the body is bulky and the head joins the neck in a way that makes the neck look thicker. In my opinion it suits the Euro daddies or the Mexi prince pony (in fact it's a very nice pose for a prince pony - I could imagine making another exception there  :P) but not, say, Shady or Sweet Stuff.

I think the Tootsie pose looks a little imbalanced because of the long tilted neck. Besides not many characters in this pose appeal to me. Goldilocks (if memory serves) was right in saying that Bright Eyes' long mane balances this pose out nicely, though.

Moondancer... again no character in this pose strikes me as particularly lovely, and yes, the sculpting is a little awkward, especially the NDS view. Moondancer herself has gorgeous colors though.

The princess ponies are not high on my list mostly from my dislike of tinsel.  On some ponies it's fine, but when you overdo it I hate it.  This is for all the princess ponies.  I would like the dragons however.  Also Brush and Grow, Happy Tails Ponies, Magic Message Ponies, Dance and Prance, Princess Brush and Grow, Sweetheart Sisters, Drink and Wet Babies, Glittery Sweetheart Sisters, Prom Queen Sweetheart Sisters, Pretty Pony, Princess with the eyelashes, Sweet Talkin Pony, Sweet Kisses, and Sundazzles.

The poses and gimmicks for these sets don't excite me.  I'll grab them if I see them at a store, but then will sell them right away.  All the other sets I'll happily collect.

Not found of Perfume Puff - I just know my cats wouldn't leave that hair alone, LOL. I don't like Dance N Prance either.  Sweet Kisses...eh.  Also um.. I'm not fond of sea ponies. Maybe if I made a little "aquarium" for them.  Not really loving any of the playset ponies, except maybe Majesty.

I like most of the G1's but I really really don't like these sets:
* First Tooth Baby Ponies
* Beddy Bye Eye Ponies <- Gives me nightmares

I really didn't want any of the drink n' wet ponies initially but after getting Baby Snookums (and giving her a pacifier and baby clothing) I am not actively avoiding them.

Sea Ponies, BBE babies, Drink 'n Wets, Eyelash Princesses, Secret Surprise and Happy Tails. That is just to name a few. I do have the full set of Happy Tails that I have been thinking about selling. Just have not gotten around to listing them yet.

Any BBEs and Flutters. I just don't like those.

There's others that I don't particularly want to collect, but those are the ones that ring to me at the moment. :)

BBE, Soda Sipping ponies, the perfume puff ponies, the sweetheart sisters.  That's all I can think of right now.

I'm not really that crazy about any lines after Year 5 of G1.  There are a few exceptions, like Newborn Twins, Rainbow Babies or Sundae Best ponies (and I've recently become smitten with Rainbow Curl Ponies, for some reason), but for the most part I can pass on any pony from Y6 onward.

I'll never forget when I twirled my Dance n Prance pony's hair too close to mine and it got caught. I was so shocked when my mom cut the pony's hair instead of mine. I thought for sure she would cut my hair since it would grow back and the pony's would not.  5-year-old logic I guess. :P

If I were your mother I would have cut your hair!

lol, me too! Maybe it's good that I don't plan to have children! hahaha

A little off topic, but this reminded me of the time that the same thing happened to my sister with a rope swing.  It was a single rope swing and my friend and I were pushing my little sister and we twisted the rope up real tight and her hair got caught in the weave with out us knowing.  You can imagine what happened when we let go.  Next thing you know, my parents had cut down the swing and my mom spent several hours unwinding my sisters hair from the rope.

I fight this all the time. Part of me wants to have the entire US g1 collection. But then there is the part of me that isn't really into Sea Ponies, Pony Friends or Dream Beauties. Some days I think, yup, I'll eventually get them all. Then other days I'm like, "why waste the money on ponies I don't like".

For me, these are absolute no-go's:
BBE (except for maybe Baby Frosting...)
Any boy ponies. I have a sexist collection. XD
Seaponies.

I've changed my mind on a few sets once I saw them in person. I used to hate Sweetheart Sisters, but realized that I really liked the colors of them. Overall though, I tend to just collect the individual ponies that I like rather than sets. :)

There is no set I really dislike, but.. I wont buy any BBE-ponies, but I will keep them if I find them on flea market or something. Same with sea ponies.
