Title: Should i trust this person?
Post by: Leegeta on May 23, 2013, 09:12:24 AM
Hi All,
So i recently won a MIB Ditzy Pony from a person on ebay who has 0 feedback (i know, bad idea right?) so i sent them a message prior to see what their reply would be since i don't like bidding to people who have 0 feedback and this is what i said

 Dear Seller,
Good Morning, i am a fellow new yorker as well, i'm a cop in the city right by your area. I have an event next thursday that i will need this my little pony Drama Pony, will you be able to ship it to me by then? thanks! i live in Long Island.

This was his reply....

I expect payment by today or I'm going to cancel your bid and relist

I think that was extremely rude and makes me not trust him, what should i do? thanks!

[moving to Trader Support ~ many thanks ~ hathorcat]

otherwise i wouldn't pay cause his answer was not only rude but also unprofessional  :(

i don't buy anymore from zeros since i was tricked once from one

Hmm I guess you can pay and then find out.

That is a little rude of that person. Their answer was not helpful at all.

I would say pay and then ask again about the shipping.

The worst case scenarios are that you get the pony late, or the person is trying to cheat you. In the case they are trying to cheat you, you should be able to contact ebay and get your money back. Also,  sounds like you should knock them down a few stars for communication.

I would be cautious. If it was me I would cancel it. :/

Yeah, something tells me this person is up to no good and i have a feeling that even if i paid i wouldn't get the MIB Ditzy doo. There was no need for a response such as that.

Pay for it with paypal, as if it does turn out to be a con you get your money back. Being rude as he is paying with paypal would be better than refusing to pay and him turning round and giving you negative feedback for not paying. Catch my drift?

I've had the odd problem buying and selling before and paypal has never yet let me down and i've been using it for at least 7 years

That is really snippy for a first-time seller. Kind of makes me very wary of them being a scammer who just wants as much money as they can get as quickly as possible before anyone realizes they're a scammer. That's just my thought. But if you pay by PayPal you're covered anyway, so...maybe it'll be ok to risk it?

All my ebay auctions i pay by paypal. I just have a bad feeling that even if i paid, the item will come to me 10)Damaged or 2) Won't send item

Well, if it is the latter, Paypal will have your back.

Not sure what they would do if it arrives damaged.

Edit: If it does arrive in good shape, I would knock them down a few stars in communication and maybe leave "seller was rude" in your feedback review. Best to let other people know that this person has some politeness issues.

Personally, if I saw two items for sale that were the same but one was five dollars cheaper and the seller was rude, I'd go for the other person. Vote with your wallet.

I would not do it...He seems a little too shady. But that is just me, I am very cautious.  ^.^ But if you have a gut feeling that he is up to no good, don't take that risk, especially with eBay.

How are they shipping the item, what do they have listed?

The seller should be able to respond to you reasonably on a shipping request.

I would simply ask them what other shipping methods they provide so that you would get the item on X day. If they cannot answer the question or are unable to reasonably respond to you then I would simply report them to ebay.

Also if they are in your area, being that it's new york they should be able to get it to you either the same day or next day.

The reply looks both inexperienced and rude and my first reaction would be to tell them to go ahead and cancel it since they cannot give you a straight answer on the shipping.

It did seem like a very rude response.  I would do as the others suggest and file a complaint if it doesn't arrive.  The problem is that you took a risk and bid.  Non-payment could look bad on your record if you care about those things.  If you don't care or the money is just too much, that's different.  I hate it when I do stuff like that on Ebay too but, I guess I feel "in for an inch, in for a mile" when it comes to it.  :(

Doesn't say, just says free shipping

Does this seller have other items up on ebay too? He wont get his money being new until you have no issues with this order and get the item. I would almost message him back and let them know You need to know if you will have it or not by the time you need it. & payment is not a issue but its kind of funny he didnt reply with the awnser you needed.

I simply replied that he didn't answer a simple question and that i don't trust him, he can cancel the bid. Even tho i won it for a good price, it's not worth the headache for me.

Paypal should back you on this.. but you HAVE to file your complaint in time! Make SURE you do it within the right time frame! (I think 30 days)

Eurgh...I wouldn't risk it, personally, unless the price was just too good to pass up.

This guy seems super shady and rude to boot. I'd avoid him.

I probably would of gone though with it, mostly because I know paypal would of covered it.

BUT! When you get that awful suspicious feeling, I think it's best just to trust your instincts.

If it's too good to be true then it probably is. That should NOT be someone's first answer when they ask about shipping.
Any chance of getting a link to this auction since it has ended?

Perhaps he thought from you telling him a) you're a local cop, and b) the day you needed it that you were expecting him to send it before payment? It wasn't the intent of your message I know, but that could explain the snotty reply that you needed to pay up.

When I had a new selling account on ebay (but wasn't a new seller) I was surprised how many scammy messages I got, either hoping I would ship before payment was made or "could you end this item early for $25?" on stuff that ended up selling for $50-$100+ bids

Well I guess it depends how badly you want this pony... Good luck regardless of your decision. For a reply like that though... I kinda think the seller deserves a neutral. I've seen people give neutrals for much less...

I dunno personally what I would do... I guess I would've paid and let Paypal have my back on it, but seriously, I think that rude response was necessary. Sometimes you get responses like that from people who don't speak English as a first language, so perhaps, especially since New York is such a melting pot of cultures, that you're working with someone who is not "so good" at English and maybe didn't mean to come off that way?

I'm NOT trying to defend them at all! I would be just as annoyed and suspicious as you are if I got a response like that from a seller when asking them a simple question... Hope you get this worked out and can avoid any headaches!

I *might* have risked it myself but only because of the buyer protection... and if you're getting bad feelings from this guy (and yes he did sound rude!) then I think you made the right decision to cancel :bigups:

But there have been instances where people haven't gotten their money back from paypal...

All the seller has to do is pull the money from paypal and close his account.  Then Legeeta would be stuck I'm afraid.

I probably wouldn't have done it either.  =(

Could-weaver, you are safe if you use a credit card. If paypal tries to say "so sorry, we tried" you call your card company and are protected by the fair credit and billing act. Visa/Mastercard would then force paypal to refund the customer with paypal's money.

I thought that (although he was unnecessarily rude) perhaps the timing of "I actually need it by Thursday" after winning the auction but before paying, wasn't the best.

I hope you can find another one!

If you won the auction you should have paid. questions like that should be asked prior to bidding.
