Title: My MOC changing mane/tail ponies are leaking plasticizer what should I do? Pics
Post by: Dusky on April 27, 2013, 07:02:14 AM
As above...  My newly received MOC Night Star (blue) and Sky Skimmer (yellow) are GOOEY inside their cards, to the point where I can manipulate the bubble packaging and hear it 'thloop' off them. There are also visible plasticizer marks inside the boxes.

I have a loose Night Star who is currently better than the MOC one, even with her symbol scuff. The MOC Night Star also has light symbol damage. Both ponies' cards are fine, possibly a little sunfaded but I can't be sure. All my other G2 MOCs are fine and not leaking.

I paid under £5 each for these MOC ponies, what should I do with them? Debox/clean and keep the cards? Leave them as-is? Photos to follow later.

Photos are here:

Edit to add:

YEAAUUUCCH. After all your input (thank you!) I de-carded the Ponies. They both felt like that plastic-processed-cheese you can get in squares on cheap fast food. They - and their hair plugs - have been soaped and scrubbed and they've both returned to 'normal', although Night Star seems to be permanently stained all over as a result (comparison photo to 'my' Night Star shows this).

Blearugh!

If they're making a mess of themselves and the packaging, I'd unpackage them. That way you can clean them off, and they'll look all the better for it. :) It's up to you, though. But plasticizer leaks will only make more of a mess over time until it's all leeched out so it might be better to do it soon before it gets too bad.

Ooooh, YUCK!
Does it make a film over the bubble?
I figure if the pony looks better deboxed I would debox her. Some yellowed nasty bubbles look gross to me, but that's just me!
It's hard to tell how she would look with a good wash.. but yuck! I didn't know G2 were prone to that!

I definitely think you should remove them. It doesn't sound right, and they could get damaged.

I've never seen a G2 do this, but the Changing Mane ponies 'feel' different, as their plastic is squashy and they are a late-run part of the G2 range.

At least if I do debox them then I get to mess about with their hair!

debox them to clean them, but keep the backing cards  if they are still nice.

they sound really gross at the moment :S

De-card those ponies! And I'm not just saying that for the fresh pony smell. If they are gooey yuckyfied at then there's no point keeping them on the card. Take them out de-goo them and keep the back cards safe and sound in a draw. Being gooey makes them no longer MOC in my opinion.
Someone said on another thread that talcum powder is good for de-gooing.

Aye, the resounding opinion is to de-card the poor girls then? Makes sense. I shall do that tonight. I've added a folder of photos to the first post, you can see the 'spot' on Night Star's cheek which is just fleeced-out gloop! And there's a shot of her vs my loose Night Star who is either a different wave release, or evidence that these guys need TLC.

Sky Skimmer is 'shiny' but her actual plasticizer marks are really hard to photograph.

Dusky I think you're doing the right thing. If they aren't mint, they aren't MOC, and unless you're a stickler for having a MOC version, there's really no point! And that plasticiser could really make a mess of those backcards.

I agree Dusky - for the price you paid and the fact that they are simply devaluing with those issues I would de card them as well and clean them up.

Yep, right decision for sure! De-card those poor things.

Oh my heavens, save those ponies!! That goop might actually destroy their eye paint or symbol, if it gets too bad... Plus, it might turn the cards to mush, and then you'll have a mess leaking everywhere!

I've just de-carded Night Star and left the bubble on the card (yay for really good utility knives) and... she REEKS. Good grief she stinks of plastic and that-awful-PVC-I-once-bought-for-a-commission.

I'll see how well she cleans up and then I'll de-card Sky Skimmer. Poor girls!

And that's both of them loose and I've cleaned them both up. That was FOUL. At least they're sale-able now if I do decide to part with them. I will gently wipe out their bubbles as well just to be sure, and I've left their accessories (excluding the hair pieces) in their boxes.

Shew pretty sad when you can't even keep something in a box because of that! <3 but it's all for the ponies!!

I have a MOC Junior who I believe has the same problem. Her head is discolored, too. =( Poor ponies! I think you did the best thing opening them.

Now I need a new pony to guard the pony books and DVD's!

Poor ponies.  :(

How did you decard her without taking the bubble off?

The bottom looks like it was opened but only enough to get the pony out.

I didn't even know this could happen, it's sad they had to be taken out of the package but they seem like they'd be a lot nicer now at least.

Poor ponies.  :(

How did you decard her without taking the bubble off?

I have some very sharp/delicate knives as a result of leatherworking, I used one to slit under the bubble and with a few layers of the card, and only did the sides/bottom of the bubble. That way you can tile the bubble up and take out the inner tray and pony, without de-carding it.
I figured if I do pass on the boxes that people would want the bubbles and the accessories still in place.

And as a note the ponies are way, way nicer now. They've been air drying overnight and are back to 'normal' pony feel, albeit a bit stiffer because of the leaked plasticizer.

Has anyone else noticed that the quality of the G2 range nosedived towards the end? All of my Changing Mane girls have bubbles/open holes in their plastic from air getting trapped in the mould. Golden Light is the worst, on her back leg.

I'm glad your girls are looking better now. Thanks for sharing the de-carding method. :)

I have a MOC silver glow who I think is starting to leak plasticiser too, and I'm thinking I might have to de-card her. :(

Yes! I have noticed that with later G2s but to be honest the whole line feels just a little bit cheaper [just in general finish] in some ways so I just presumed I was being overly judgemental :P

The earlier girls that the USA got are fairly good, I've not noticed too much deterioration aside from Dainty Dove, who seems determined to be cream coloured instead of white.

The later EURO releases are really lacking in, well, everything. And yet I still like them.

I've seen a LOT of MOC G2's go that way. If they're somewhere warm it only gets worse lol. I've seen pics before where it looked as though the pony was sweating in her bubble lol. You deffo did the best thing there Dusky :) As someone else said, if they aren't mint, then they are MOC...They're just OC lol ^_~

Lol I love this term - OC - this should be used for any pony which is no longer perfect on her card :P

You did well.

I know this is going to be blasphemous of me to say, but by keeping things MIB/MOC is the same as saying bye-bye to your ponies (or anything else you want to keep mint like that). The plastic deteriorates over time, specially the type of plastic/PVC thing they use in toy boxes/cards. I had this conversation about this with my boyfriend and he said that it is doing much worse to the ponies by keeping them mint like that than letting them out in the open. Long story short, by keeping ponies mint like that, you are destroying them faster. As simple as that.

I should also mention he is a conservator/restorer of cultural heritage and art, so he, of all people, knows what he is talking about.

I really want to start a topic regarding this, but I know a lot of people won't really understand how much harm they are doing, so I'll just forget it (unless someone actually wants to know more about this?). I also understand why people want to keep items MIB to keep their value, but it doesn't change my opinion or the fact that it's not good in the long-run. But hey, tis joo choice, peeps !
