Title: Whats up with these sparkle pony factory errors?
Post by: Ember1 on April 11, 2013, 02:08:38 PM
So I recently bought a sparkle baby firefly lot on ebay.. one is normal and the other has a pink body and A LOT more sparkles all over her body than the normal version.
I know Berrymouse has a green sparkler pony that is quite an oddity too.. Just wondering if anyone knows of any more oddities like these have popped up from the sparkle pony sets.
I haven't cleaned her up yet  but her symbols, eyes and blush look fresh and shiny so it doesnt look like any fading has occured. She is in much better condition than the more  normal purple sparkle firefly.

I love that they're so different from each other.  It makes collecting so much more interesting.

It almost looks like sun damage to me. I have found the sparkly g1 ponies to be prone to it. I wish I had before and after pics of the pink one that changed shades on me (beautiful pink to orangey color, so sad!)

Either way she is still lovely!

I agree with OL1, this is fairly common, but the purple sparkle ponies especially seem prone to it, even the G3s.

I agree with sun damage. As for the extra sparkles I think the factory workers just got a little happy with adding sparkles lol she's really pretty!

Her body is very uniform in color. There is no fading to symbols or blush.
I would think sun damage would affect the consistency of color throughout her body. I know people thought the same thing about berry mouses green sparkler. Hers also has fresh blush and symbols.

They definitely become discolored. I have two of that baby, one completely changed color over the years in storage...no sun.

I agree with what others have said - all the similar colour body ponies with transparent plastic are prone to their plastic ageing and changing colour. You even see it in the G3 Divine Shines nowadays. As for the difference in glitter - its mixed in the plastic so it is dispersed in different quantities - I have come across sparkle babies and adults some with lots of glitter and some with little. It probably all depends on the quantity of glitter in that batch of plastic.

Either way - they are adorable! I love this pony and congrats on having such a couple of cuties :)

I apologize for the picture quality but apparently Wisconsin is on a waiting list for some sunshine...

Anyway, both are childhood ponies and both were kept in a sealed container for years in the basement.

I'd say different plastic batches, discolouration and  rust/mould/dirt inside can all change the transparent ponies.

Yeh. It's weird for sure. I would say the pony I bought is pretty close to mint but I guess that doesn't matter if the plastic didn't absorb the dye well to begin with and was prone to changing.
I wish we could know for sure if she started out this color because it is pretty drastic difference. Your right though. She is really neat either way.
Especially with extra sparkles everywhere. She certainly has more sparkles
Then any of my other childhood sparkle ponies.

i do like her with more sparkles in ;)

it does seem that the transparent glittery ponies are prone to changing colour over time, but it does not rule out the fact that there will have been different batches made :)

love pkw xxx

Batch variation is fairly common on many ponies; I think it's just more obvious on some of the sparkle ponies :)

I had all the sparkle babies as a kid, and while I remember them being the right colors at first, I played with them outside a *lot*, and within a year or so, firefly matched the earth pony babies.

One of them actually turned partly clear/whitish from getting left outside, eventually!  Since the ponies aren't solid, even the inside neck ring can change from sunlight lol!

I have two sparkle Fireflys that look exactly like yours. One is pink and one is more orange. The orange one is hard as a rock. And I can also tell that she used to be pink because ive had her for a long time. She just started turning orange and now she is hard as a rock.

My MO Star Hopper did that too. She was stored away for a few years (with other ponies, in a ventilated crate out of the sun) and I imagine my face looked rather odd when I found her sporting 2 colors.
