Title: When they ask you why you collect...
Post by: teacher316 on April 10, 2013, 08:07:04 AM
Sometimes I get anxiety dreams if I feel nervous about something. I've never had one that's related to ponies though until a couple days ago. I dreamed that my sister was asking me why I collect plastic horses. I totally avoided the question and tried to change the subject!
I woke up feeling like I need to go over what I would say if someone asked me about the ponies. What do you guys say when family/friends ask? Oh and I should add that some family members are a little judgemental:( Any suggestions that would shut them up quickly?

I tell them what I collect and ask if they have any toy's from the past.
Everyone at my work has seen or talked to me about my pony/monster high collection.

Some give me the eye. Others tell people about my customs.
I don't let them look down on me.

My dreams is one day I will go to work and get a big box of ponies. :)

You could say they are an investment, as some become worth good cash.

My dad knows I collect and just rolls his eyes and takes it as another one of my eccentricities. My other half doesn't understand what ponies are about but he doesn't have a problem with me collecting them as he knows they are a nostalgia and innocence trip for me. And he's happy to be dragged along to uk ponycon with me.

And thats it other than people on the forums no one really knows I'm a collector, I've had a lot of crap growing up so I choose to keep the collecting to people closest to me, not even my friends know as I just don't want the aggro of explaining my collecting and getting looked down upon. If they find out they find out but as long as the truely important people in my life know and accept it then I'm just fine and dandy.

I have had people from work ask about them. Some of them laugh to themselves while others ask a lot of questions. My hunny was not sure of them at first. He said he thought it was kind of childish, but now he accepts it. He even wants to know what one that I still need and want. It does make me feel good when others like them or think its cute. I do not talk to very many people that live by me know about them. The neighbor kids all think that its awesome when they come over.

I like to be little weird and I always go ahead and tell everyone "hey btw, I collect my little ponies!"  I just love how differently everyone reacts. I couldnt care less if someone is judgemental about it. Its what I love to do, and if someone thinks its stupid.. Well, more ponies for me.  :P

But if someone really wants to know why I collect, I always say its about nostalgia.  :) And I love restoring. Its awesome to give ponies a second chance!

Usually I say they're fun to clean up and restore. True enough - that's one of my main reasons for collecting them. (The other is nostalgia. And they're adorable.)

Most people don't know. It's not something (off board) that I talk about. If asked I say it's a link back, to my childhood.  Which wasn't all that great and I literally have nothing from my childhood/teen years (except for three photo albums, my diploma).

So I collect, which is limited to blind bags (limited space) for nostalgia.

Nostalgia for me. Ponies were my absolute favourite toys as a kid. I was incredibly attached to them and they meant the world to me. That love still lingered so I started collecting :)

Judgemental people are always going to find something to pick on.
You don't have to explain yourself to anyone.

I collect ponies because I fell in love with the first set of flat foot set I saw on the toystore shelves. I liked them more than any other toy I'd ever seen. Wasn't allowed to have one all those years ago...  Made up for that since then.

i have them displayed in my house (always have) and on my desk at work, most people just giggle about it, i just tell them straight up that i love MLP and some ask if they are worth anything i usually tell them that some are worth a lot maybe one day they all will be. some people even give me a heads up to where they see ponies. i think the worst i get is when my hubbys friends ask if the collection is really mine or my hubbys...lol but that is just to bug my hubby ;)

I collect ponies because I love them and I like to collect. My collection is from ponies to pvc figures, resin kits of anime and game charaters. My family is very judgemental, and  sometimes they roll their eyes, or say something like "Grow up" But the funny thing is that my dad collects music Cds, my older sister collects cat figures and the middle one paints a lot of jewelry boxes. And my response is "It´s my money! Did you prefer I bought drugs?!" I really get angry and want to scream, leave me alone!

I collect ponies because I have a soft spot for cute things, and always liked MLP since I was a kid. I blame g4 Rarity getting me back into ponies. xD I also like having things on display and taking pics of them, same with my MH collection.

I don't really like to tell people what I am into or what I collect because of how judgmental some of them end up being. Even though I never say anything bad about their hobbies (unless it was life threatening). And they are quick to blame it on my OCD, which drives me nuts to say the least. ^^;

A couple of people know I collect in real life (not counting family) and and when they asked why when they first found out I simply replyed "why not?" if they cannot come up with a good answer 1 up to me. and if they have a bad answer like "its childish" I just relpy thatI enjoy it. Luckly neither of them did and have to face it I have quirks.

Saying that If anyone did have a problem with me I can stand up for my self as I am far from a girly girl.  :devious: (when I want to be)

I just give them a simple "Because I like them."  That's all that needs to be said. I certainly don't do it because I hate them! LOL

If someone is going to get judgmental over it, it's their issue, not mine.  Why must I justify my love for colorful little horses?

What I get tired of being asked is why I don't sell them if they are worth is as much as I say. Did you not just hear that I collect them? I'm one of those suckers that will pay an outrageous price for one. XD

Omg, this! When I tell people how much my collection is worth, they always ask "Why dont you sell it?" or "Sell it already".. no! just no! Maybe when im in serious need of money but thats no way to collect!

Some people just don't get it do they. Haha. When I told my boyfriend he was like ok so write a list of the ones you want so I know what to get haha. My monster high dolls are dotted about the kitchen but I keep my ponies in the bedroom at the moment because I'm not ready to share with anyone other than my other half. I imagine as I get more they will start to get displayed around the house too. Need shelves first mind haha

I say that I collect my little ponies because they make me happy and have gotten me through hard times......and of course I have had them my whole life so not only are they a part of my life....the also shape who I am amongst other things! :satisfied:
I could care less what others think.

I am totally out of the closet!! No pony secrets here.
When they ask why (and they always do!) I always say the same thing
"They are colourful with brushable hair!" It isn't really a reason that I need to justify.

I could give them the long winded answer (like in the thread here http://mlparena.com/mlp/index.php/topic,327389.0.html) but really I don't think most people would "get" it anyways unless they are a collector type themselves.. If they do collect something, anything at all really then they understand the mentality behind it.

The whole family collected things when I was growing up so "I guess it runs in the family" would probably be my answer. I wish I was as handy as dad was with putting displays together, but it's harder to build your own set-in shelves in a fully-carpeted, top floor apartment

I completely understand when people start collecting or when people have certain real life situations, that it can be tough to be completely out of the pony closet. I was shy about it initially - but I think that was more an age thing and a self confidence issue rather than to do with ponies specifically.

Some people are always going to laugh...some people are going to be accepting and others will actually be interested. As long my family and friends are accepting or if at worst they simply don't judge, then I am happy. If my friends, or people who think they are my friends, judge me and make a fool of me for such an innocent hobby, then they are not people I would wish to be around. Its a little black and white but when you love someone, when you care about their feelings you accept them for all their wonderfulness or weirdness. And thats why I love the Arena! Its a great place to be whether you tell everyone you collect ponies or whether you just tell us here [dont worry we wont tell anyone!]

Plus...people collect way odder things than MLP!

I've actually never been asked why I collect (other than by people here). But if I were asked, I would give them the same answer I give everyone here: ponies remind me of my childhood and they make me really happy. Pretty short and to the point ^.^

When people find out\I tell them, I say that I collect because I find them cute and pretty. I feel like it is my do over from a not a happy childhood. This is my chance to get all of the things I wanted but could not have, my time to get what I had but had lost or had taken. SO ponies are a way of making me feel at  ease about my past, because yeah bad things happened, yes my G2 Ivy got its mane and tail cut off by the girl next door, but its ok,because at least I know I can now get a better one,and this time we can play and have adventures like we should have been able too.I also say to my grandparents that I am a 17 year old girl....i could be doing way worse stuff then staying home and organizing my pony collections! XD So yeah, Collecting keeps me out of normal teenage troubles, like Prom, I stayed home and watched ponies instead of going.

I just say that they make me happy! I never make excuses for anything I do. My life is my own and if they don't "get" it then whatever! Their collections are interesting to them, their sports are interesting to them...that's what it's about! When it stops being fun and interesting I'll do something else!
I actually had an eBay seller from Europe ask me today because I told him I wanted to keep the items MIB. He asked me (politely) how old I was and why I collect them. He has a sister in law who's bonkers for the G4's and he wanted to know if it was common for adults to enjoy them as much as she did! Lol
I gave him the Arena address! :)

I aways tell them it's about nostalgia and trying to recapture a piece of my childhood.  Only those close to me know I collect.  My family is very supportive and my husband is amazing.  He has built me two pony rooms and loves to go thrifting on the hunt for them.  Just today he brought me home two G4 brushables he found while out and about.  No one at my work knows simply because I choose to keep that part of my life separate from business.  I find it easier that way.  It's my own private joke.  I sit in meetings the majority of day dressed in a suit and talking about "business".  Little do they know I'm secretly day dreaming about the ponies that will hopefully be in the mail box when I get home.  if only they knew!  I'm really a five year old in an adult's body.   :P

I have a few displayed openly in nice display boxes.  I think some people just assume they're expensive.  All of my good friends know that I really love MLP and collect them.  But I don't talk about it to people I don't know well so I've actually never been asked.  I think I would just say I love toys in general and it's my hobby.

"I find bright colours soothing"

"What ponies? Oh god! Where did those come from!?"

"Oh, you'll see. You'll all see."

What I really say is that I like them. I don't owe anyone anything else.

Funny how some of you have problems. I am a guy, and I never get so much as a bat of an eyelid from people.

I normally just say "Because I love ponies A LOT!!!!" and people seem to be happy to stop there and not proceed with the conversation. Maybe because they are afraid I'll ask for favours, or maybe they're afraid if I said too much, it will be my turn to probe them instead. lol

Haha... well I'm not ashamed.  It's just not a conversation that I've ever had.  No one has ever asked me why.  There are ponies in my house where people can see them, but I guess the only people who notice them are people who are interested or have their own collections of toys and such.  They don't ask why I collect.  I don't ask why they collect the things they do in their homes either.  It almost seems kind of rude.  Shouldn't it be obvious? I like them.  :P

Because ponies aren't bad for my health, and without them I would have to spend all that money on booze and cigarettes like a normal person my age and those things are bad for me.

Y'all are right. Collectors of other types usually understand.People like my mom do NOT. I have to mention things like "they make me happy. plain and simple. They bring out my inner child. They are cheaper than my my resin/breyer hobby (since I don't collect the rare Nirvanas).  They're customizable and I can add them to my studio line-up."
