They're Watercolour Baby Sea Ponies Foamy, Wavedancer, and Misty:

http://www.kimsites.net/dreamvalley/6th_edition_ponies2.html#watercolor_baby_sea_ponies

Looks like they're in gorgeous condition, AND you got the floats!  Good job!

The cottony hair is typical of these guys, since the colour-changing hair doesn't seem to age well--I'm surprised to see Foamy and Wavedancer's hair is so straight and shiny.  They're typically worth more if they still change colour.

I think they're regular U.S. releases--but they still look beautiful!

it doesn't look like they were made in mexico does it? the boxes say auriken though :) maybe the ponies were repackaged?

does anyone have the "non mexico" ponies and can see what the marks say's on the tail curl?

On the US release it simply says (c) 1986 Hasbro underneath the tail.

Hi all!  I'm bumping this back up, because I now have in my possession the three watercolor baby sea ponies that were released in Mexico, with their original packaging, and I've done a rather minute inspection of them.

The problem is that their tail stamp is (virtually) identical to the regular US release.  Also, there is nothing about their coloring that is unique, although it may be a little different.

Here's what I noticed:

Spray, known in the US as Foamy, came with a yellow ribbon instead of orange.

All three seem to be made of slightly softer plastic.  This is hard to really judge, but there is a consistent slightly squishier feeling about all three when compared to their US counterparts.

The content of the tail stamp on all three is the same as the US ponies, but doesn't seem to be stamped into the plastic quite as deeply.  I had more trouble reading the writing on the Mexican ponies compared to the US ponies.  The firmness/deepness of the tail stamp is uniform on the Mexican ponies, and uniform on the US ponies, but not uniform when comparing one group to another.

All three seem to be slightly paler in color.  Watercolor babies can definitely vary in color, but there is a uniform discrepancy between the Mexican ponies and their US counterparts.  I actually have two Surfys and they are both the same slightly paler color, while my US Wavedancers are darker.  There is variation between my Wavedancers, but even the palest one isn't as pale as Surfy.  Salty even seems pink, whereas Misty (her US version) is very orange.

Finally, the box very definitely says Made in Mexico.  There is no mention of Hong Kong anywhere on the packaging at all.

I know virtually nothing about Mexican MLPs, but would this not all indicate that they actually were made in Mexico, rather than simply being repackaged versions of the US ponies?  Or am I just being too much of a wishful thinker?  It'd be lovely if they are unique.

I'll snap some pics and add them to the thread soon!!  Probably not today, but hopefully tomorrow.

thank you for posting whizzer :)

this thread triggered a few things in my mind at the time of posting so I had to refresh my memory on the sea ponies. I must admit for a long time I thought they were Mexican made since it said "made in mexico" on the box.

there was a post about the mexican sea ponies not so long ago, I am posting a link to it for you here :)

http://mlparena.com/index.php/topic,331611.0.html

with the Mexican babies they don't have any of the features that we commonly associate with the Mexican made ponies: the eye style and paint used, plastic type and hair

I can't seem to access the full spotlight on the Mexican ponies or the nirvana gallery at the moment :(

PS I want to say how much I use your site when it comes to sea ponies :bigups: the information you have on there is so useful.

Thanks pkw!

I think my main question relates to the fact that the boxes specifically say made in Mexico.  I've got baby sea ponies on cards from Canada, France, Belgium, Germany and Italy.  Not one of them says that the pony was made in that country.  All but the Italian card specifically reference Hong Kong.  The Italian one doesn't say where the pony was made, just that it was licensed to DAG (or something to that effect).

It just seems strange to me that this one country would claim to have made the ponies locally if they didn't.  :(

I can't seem to track the spotlight down :( lots of things are being moved about on the server and the spotlight isn't there.

I am really hoping shelti will see this thread as she wrote the spotlight with the help of some Mexican collectors.

I will admit I am mighty confused by it all and am swinging from "yes, I think they were made in mexico from what it says on the box" to "no, they are all wrong for a Mexican pony and must be HK made"

That makes two of us!  :)  I can't decide if the differences I've noticed in the plastic are legit or not, and can't decide if the packaging is honest or not.

I have my original box for baby cuddles and her buggy (bear with me, I'm going somewhere!) and that lists her as 'Baby Cuddles and her accessories made in Spain' though she herself is marked Hong Kong. She is different in colour to the US release, but I've never been able to work out which is more likely to be correct. It sounds similar to the issue with the Mexican baby seas.
