i got a nice camera at christmas (nikon 1 J1) and thought i should get some photo editing software so i downloaded GIMP. i have the basics but im totally stuck when it comes to more complex things. i'd like to 'cut' parts out of pictures and paste to a new layer but when i try using the free select tool im not getting anywhere >_<
can anyone give me an idiots guide

i use gimp as well. but i use an older version becuase the new one isnt user firendly >< when i wnat to cut things out i use the cirl or the box tool then click cut.

i usely make the background a color that is diffract than any color found in the image I want then add transparency the cut the background out I'm probably going the long way around but it works for me

Don't look at me. I can only get the thing to crop and resize. Anything else is beyond me. I miss my Photoshop.

Go to edit, paste as, and select paste as new layer.

If its anything like Photoshop, it should create its own layer when you paste it in. Try moving it sround when done, you should see instantly if thats the case :)

What MA said. I don't know much about GIMP, though.

ive had another go and can cut/paste now
feel like giving up and buying photoshop, it was much easier

Almost all graphic editing software is very alike, as it has the basic same function... the commands are just in different places. :) Glad to hear that you got it to work for you!

I bought a printer that came with two copies of Photoshop Elements, one for Mac and one for PC. Seeing as I have Photoshop CS5, I don't have much use for Elements. If you download a trial version of Elements I can PM you one of the keys.
Once you learn Photoshop, GIMP ends up being really lacking.
