Title: What are you working on? (Custom MH projects)
Post by: Tropical_Sunset on March 26, 2013, 05:01:20 PM
Just curious to see what MH custom projects people are working on right now!  Here are my two current projects:

Hairing my seamonster:
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

But I ran out of both of her hair colors so I moved on to...

Hairing my vampire girl:
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Her hair is a blend of forget-me-not and bobby blue but it's so difficult to pick that up in photos of her.  It looks really cool IRL though, I promise!

I'm going to do a little bit of paint work on both girls once I'm done hairing them, too.  I really don't like the vampire girl's red lipstick.

So!  What are you working on?

I'm still in the beginning stage of my first rerooting of my OC plant girl. Just need to get some hair.

Since we're in a thread about Customs, Let me hijack the thread for a quick moment:

What kinda hair material does what? I know it's been mentioned a few times but I can't remember what I read.

Kanekalon = no kinks or bends in hair, but shrivels and afroed when boil straightened
Nylon = Can only be styled straight and not boil permed/straightened
Saran = Can easily be styled with high temperature

I need to decide the right texture for her so please correct me if it's off, I need to know what does what.

And how much hair from who fills a whole MH head?? The hair style I'm going for is just about lower than the shoulder, about going down to her bust.

Sounds like me, I know what colors I want to use on my spare Jinafire, but not sure if I can live with her hair.  Also inspired by some detail work I have recently seen so maybe some body painting.  I know the imp has a bunch of things she wants to do, but I have told her she needs to finish a few projects first.

Here is my list of to-dos but haven't started yet...

1. Jinafire - red rehair and reddish face up
2. Jinafire - green rehair and greenish face up
3. Catrine - changed into Siamese
4. Catrine - change into calico
5. Sister Clawdeen - turned to Greek goddess with brown hair/highlights

I also have a box of dolls to practice my face ups on

You have Nylon mixed up with Saran. :) Saran is straight only. It cannot be easily boil permed. If you do get it to curl, the curls generally fall out. Nylon curls tend to last a very very long time. Nylon is the same hair that MLP has. Saran often has a slick, almost oily feel to it.

I have been working very slowly on a reroot. I have  B&W frankie that I have been practicing on. Im ashamed of how she looks so I wont show her. But I was finally comfortable with my hairing method by the time I ran out of the color I was using on her.

So this is a serious attempt. Im turning scaris clawdeen into a role play character of mine. Her name is Zarlena Fox. Eventually she will have a faceup so she has an original look and fox markings to one degree or another. I want subtle. But I will either have to pay someone for the faceup or wait a long time. I need to practice and with tendinitis in one arm and carpal tunnel in the other, I cant do much. I have been patiently working on her maybe about 10-15 plugs at a time.

Its early morning with little light and these are just phone pics, so nothing special.

Hair is nylon. It's about 4 or 5 different colors right now in the blend. Im trying to use up the stuff I have on hand and I love subtle, more realistic blends. I AM considering adding in a streak of red, but Im not positive yet.

Lesson learned: Start from the bottom and work your way up. If you start with the part then it just gets in the way.

Right now I am rerooting my CAM Sea Monster but am slacking pretty bad on that. I need to get her done.
Also after seeing all of my dolls my mother in law wanted me to make her a set of fairies a girl and a boy. (She does this with everything I get into, I have already done a pony with a fairy symbol and an action figure fairy for her.) So she bought all of the supplies I will need and these are going to be my first full faceups. I am working on the sketch for the girls face now. Made wings with fantasy film. Hopefully I will be done soon and can post pics.

I have so many customizing plans!

Currently in progress:
- practice faceup on Bratz boy doll
- Bratz Kidz head w/ acrylic eyes to replace the Novi Stars head I put on a MH body
- faceup & body blushing on dragon CAM
- Adventure Time customs - Marceline and Princess Bubblegum (using werewolf cam and the cat cam respectively)
- Barbie scooter repaint

I also plan to:
- paint the ice girl's body so it matches her head better and blends with the translucent forelimbs
- paint a thrift store Barbie scooter
- make dolls of my many OCs

hehe! Golden goddess is one of the highlights I am using, but I am only doing a tiny bit of it. I really look forward to seeing yours!

Hmm.. colors in my blend so far.. Butterscotch, Golden Goddess, English Toffee, Buttercreme, Virgin Snow, Honeysuckle, and Golden Sun.

OK.. I underestimated my numbers before. 7 colors. lol. I always seem to use so many, to do the most subtle, plain results.

At the moment, I have three customs for myself on the go.  I have:

- A calico cat who was a RP character of mine called Anaxerete ("Ana-zer-ret-tay").  I'm making her out of a Catrine.

- Rehairing a Sig Howleen who had a hair mishap.  I got a really awesome color in a random 5-pack from Dollyhair.com that I thought suited her, so I practiced re-hairing on her.

- A sort-of me doll (doesn't look like me, but how I would like to look or imagine I would look?  How I look on the inside?) that's made out of my very first MH doll, DotD Cleo who had bad glue seepage.

I also have a bunch of CAM's that I'm going to be re-hairing for myself.  I don't really count those as customs for myself though because I won't be changing their face makeup.

Fun fun!

Maniah: Love that Clawdeen! What char is she becoming and in what game is she?

Maniah: Love that Clawdeen! What char is she becoming and in what game is she?

Thank you!

Zarlena is a were-fox pirate from waaaaay back in the day when I used to RP in AOL chat rooms and message boards. lol. We used dice rollers in the chat rooms to do combat and stuff. She is an old character and one of my favorites.

I did reincarnate her for a tabletop game of Marvel Heroic, but that didn't last long for me since I really didn't like the system too much. Character generation rules are "make whatever you want. assign whatever dice you want to whatever powers you want." Great in theory.. in practice, not so great. The GM made me change things and I really like having guidelines to work with. Not a fun time.

I also plan to make a fallen angel who is another character back from my AOL days. I'm working on getting wings made for her first though.

Maniah: I have  the same problem with GURPS, but for me it's too mechanical and rules heavy, without much flexibility. Not my system.

Your fallen angel sounds cool, who are you using as a base?

I have to say that despite Clawdeen being a wolf in my mind very strongly, I have no trouble suspending belief and seeing her as a fox in your custom. She looks foxy, no pun intended ;)

Maniah, I usually don´t like blondies but I must say Clawdeen looks amazing in these colors. I can´t wait to see what you she will look finished. I love the idea of a were-fox!

About my customs planning, I´m working right now in painting these ghouls:

Rochelle
Venus
Robecca
Operetta

And I´m waiting my hair order to start rerooting the werecat twins and then, painting them as dark siameses.
Another one who is waiting for a reroot is the pack sisters Clawdeen; I don´t like very much her hair.
And, when I have done all them, I´ll paint these:

Sisters pack Clawdeen and Howleen
Sig. Frankie (not sure if i´ll reroot her hair yet)
Catrine
and one of my Toraleis

I´m not sure of what to do with Nefera, she is still in her box because I´m not sure if I like her enough...

Stalking everybody's projects

I am currently working on (since December) a set of 7 jackalope customs. So far, all the ears are sculpted, painted, more or less flocked, and one head is rehaired. Another is juust started, and one is halfway to being rehaired, but I am almost out of the color I'm using, and need to order more.

I really want to see your jackalopes, DoomBunnies! I love jackalopes XD Will you post a pic of them so far?

I am planning to make a goblin out of my werewolf CaM, who's been in pieces for ages, once I've decided on a wig. I'm not much of a customizer so really all I'm going to do is stick her ears in sideways :P I figure I'll cut the ear clips off and then make holes in the sides of her head (below the wig line) for the pegs, and use a drop of glue to secure them once they're in. Those who've done this, I'd love to hear your best way to pierce the correct size holes in the noggin?

-snip-
Thankies for that! now I have to decide if I want nylon or Saran...She'd have a long bob cut, but don't know if I want her to have curled ends like Spectra's design or just a straight bob...the slick, almost oily texture would match her characteristics so well. :hmm: so many decisions but so little options.

Okay, SO much awesomeness in this thread.  I can't wait to see the ideas listed here come to fruition!!  And as for the WiP shots...WOW!  Alice looks amazing!  And that blonde Clawdeen is absolutely gorgeous!  Those colors look amazing on her!  I was worried about my dolls not looking right since I chose nylon for their hair instead of saran, but your Clawdeen gives me hope!

love the blue!! looks great on the vamp.

Since you want to have her hair in a bob cut, you could probably get away with only 2 nylon Dollyhair MLP hair packs to hair your doll.  My seamonster has entire, Dollyhair MLP nylon uncut hair strands so she's going to take a LOT of hanks to complete.  I cut the hair hanks in half to hair my vampire and she still has long hair and will probably take 3 packs of hair.  If you're doing a bob, you could cut the hank in half and then cut those hanks in half and probably still have the hair long enough for what you want.  I'm not sure about any of this when it comes to saran hair.  I haven't ordered any yet.

Thanks! After the whole drama with DH, I'm gonna try not to order from there. >,<; For now I'm looking around other places to see where I can order from and pestering one of my friends to buy it for me since I has no card to pay online.

One issue I would have to figure out in making her is: She has two vines/tendrils coming from the back of her head that's kinda like pigtails with thorns and a leaf at the end of each and I have no idea how I'd pull it off.

Maybe like have three or 6 plugs that haven't been cut and braid them into long pigails?

Faced with all the talented customizers around here I'm a little shy to admit that I've been working really hard on my first rehair for a few months. I'm getting ready to finish her up. I put off the part until last as I know it's going to give me troubles.

I *think* the drama is all cleared up with Dollyhair.  I'm honestly not sure where else to get hair.  The RestoreDoll.com website was way too confusing and messy for me to figure anything out. x_x

Do you have a design sketched out for the tendrils and such?  I'm curious to see it!

My seamonster has a part...Sort of.  I didn't bother with one for my vampire, though.  I thought I'd tie the top of her hair back into a "bump-it" type of hairdo.  Anyway, can't wait to see your dolly!

Right now I'm working on rerooting my black and white SS Frankie in rainbow gradiant hair. I'm about halfway done. After that I think I will be doing an Abbey or a blue Robecca.

Rainbow gradiant hair?? I'd love to see!  I'm trying to figure out how to pull off rainbow hair for my three-eyed ghoul.  Not sure how I'm going to go about it yet.

You could pop in a plug or two of some kind of different material :)  Yarn was my first thought, but you could use almost anything!  I was surprised at all the crazy yarn "types" there are out there!  Walk your yarn section at your local Walmart/Target/Mejier and inspiration will strike, I promise.  Especially with that crazy brain of yours

Try threading some cotton thread through the plugs, and do a spiral knot:
http://www.craftprojectideas.com/index.php/how-to/basic-techniques/450-knots-how-to-make-a-spiral-knot
And then end it with a leaf bead, Or somesuch. If you made it with a wire in the middle, it could be poseable!

I actually wanted to make a personal thread to introduce her when I first through up of her and all that, but until then, I've just been lazy to go through all of it, so until she's done, she'll be under wraps. :P *Is very paranoid in general about sharing her ideas and the possibility of having someone steal it* I've "drawn" a few pictures of her and will probably post/include them in that thread once I ever get to it.

I'm not a great artist, but I will draw drew a quick sketch of how I'd want her hair to look and her vines.
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Made her hair a little short in this sketch, but her left part I wanted to make longer. Her tendrils are a lot longer, like possibly down to her feet/calves, long. :P

(Now I just hope no one steals this picture and steal my idea! >,<)

I was thinking of maybe trying yarn, but the texture/look didn't look/feel right to me, maybe be too floppy when i need to be able to pose them. Maybe I'll go have a look and see what kinds there are in stores.

Believe me, I've put SOoo MUCH thought and time into creating her and spent so much time doing research and everything. I really want to get her done.

With her characteristics, I actually wanted to make them poseable!! Just didn't know how. >,>; And Leaf shaped beads might actually work! As for that knot method, if I can find the right kind of thread or even use hair, that might work!

Thankies for that! now I have to decide if I want nylon or Saran...She'd have a long bob cut, but don't know if I want her to have curled ends like Spectra's design or just a straight bob...the slick, almost oily texture would match her characteristics so well. :hmm: so many decisions but so little options.

I would reccomend nylon for a bob. If the hair is too short and doesnt have enough eight, it might stick up and not lay flat if it is saran. And no amount of boiling will get it to lay flat either :(

Nylon will stickup at first also, even when long, but you can get it to lay flat by doing nothing more than tying it down. My clawdeen's hair sticks up a bit at first, but it lies flat because I pull it all down snug and clip it behind her head when Im not working on her since I have to work so slowly.

Oooh. I used to make lanyards and such in high school. You CAN do this style with doll hair, but you will need it to be something very long. The center string that you do all of the knotting around can be the length you desire, but the string you tie around it should be like twice its length, or maybe even more. I would test it out first with some string to see how much you will need.

For the tendril... What about doing those "knot" friendship bracelets method around a white... It would make it have a vine like appearance... So it might work...

LuvlyMelody why not use Polymer Clay for the vines you can bake it plus it has many colours? then all you need to do is A] glue it on or B] use magnets to add or remove when you feel like it

All this talk of customs is making me wanna take a step forward and prepare for her even more. I think I'll shave her hair and take pictures and draw on that with MSpaint and show what I want to try to do with her. :P

Finally I found the video I was looking for! This is a tutorial that shows how to make a rootable cap for a CAM, but I am showing it because I think the material used would be great for the vines needed in the hairstyle of that plant monster. They use Lumina Air Dry Polymer Clay, and once it dries, it is really flexible. you could use it around some wire and probably make poseable vines complete with thorns.

I think that looks really neat! The back of the couch is too tall for it to resemble a proper couch in my opinion, but the pattern is very nice.

It makes me giggle, because I see it and think of Dr Horrible's over sized armchair, which looked like a couch at first because of the camera angle.

I didn't realize it till now, but it does look like her. If I knew how to make her hair splay out like that, I actually would make her style like that, but instead I'll have it down OR try to have it splayed out like Yuna's.

ETA: F***!!! I tried cutting the hair off of Venus and I was already having trouble getting the head off as it was, but once I cut the hair and tried pulling them out from the inside with tweezers, a couple of her plugs ripped into one super big "plug" My 2nd Venus/ MH doll Ruined, F***!! Now I have to open a 3rd one!! I don't want to ruin any more of them! F*** I feel so terrible about this. >,<;

F*** Those stupid prongs inside too! they were probly why they ripped. Where can I clip off the prongs once I get the head off??

Thank you everyone with all the great suggestions but with this being my first custom and all, I'll keep her simple and not TOO Extravagant and after that plug ripping, I think I'd be better off with her being simple before I lose my mind if I go that far into making an awesome custom only to have it ruined. -_-; I might order the 52 inch hanks from RDS and save a few 52 inch plugs and braid them into super long braided pigtails.
Title: Re: What are you working on? (Custom MH projects)

When you say the plug ripped.. Do you mean the holes in the vinyl ripped? Because if so, you can fix those. I'll have to look around for the tutorial I found (It's been posted here a few times)..

Also, with the prongs on the neck post, you can clip off the side bits. It's the round base of the neck plug that the head really grips. Im not really sure what the function of the prongs is other than to keep young kids from pulling the head of too easy. I have started clipping the side prongs of mine off now and it makes it so much easier to handle the doll.

Also, when you say "tweezers" do you mean the sort used for plucking eyebrows? If so, I would recommend investing in hemostat pliers from the fishing isle of your local walmart, for like $5. They have a MUCH better grip on the hair inside. And I know it is tempting to yank and tug hard on the glue inside the head, but just tug gently. Most of the hair will come out just by gently running the tip of the hemostat pliers along the inside of the head, sort of scraping the plastic gently.
Title: Re: What are you working on? (Custom MH projects)
Post by: LuvlyMelody on March 30, 2013, 12:46:42 PM
Yeah, the holes in the vinyl ripped and it's a pretty big one, about maybe less than a centimeter?? and I realized she had some missing plugs too. I got too anxious and opened another Swimline Venus, and this time did a better job of getting the head off and hair, but arrgh, not as many ripped, but at 3 points there are like one or two of them ripped, but they should be doable without being noticed. Now I'm just plain scared of getting her rooted now with the fear of those plugs ripping. >,< esp. the hairline with those super tiny holes all close together. =_=;

Yeah I used my plucking tweezers since we don't have any hemostats. @,@; Since it was the slim boxed dolls, she didn't have any glue so it wasn't as bad but still took a while to get it all out. I'll go find those when I get more money and the chance.
Title: Re: What are you working on? (Custom MH projects)
Post by: DoomBunnies on March 30, 2013, 01:07:47 PM
Breathe dear! Torn plugs are not an issue, and the plastic can handle a lot more pain than it seems like it. Both dolls are fine for rehairing. I normally just grab the 38" hanks, and I can tell you that those cut in half and then put in, so 1/4th length? goes to a little beyond the doll's body once it's actually on. I've started rehairing my heads on CAM bodies to remind me that no, the dolls are not quite that long.

Also, if you're really stressed about the holes, here's the mentioned tutorial: http://www.nonaptime.com/2013/02/tutorial-patching-up-vinyl-gaps-and-holes/ (http://www.nonaptime.com/2013/02/tutorial-patching-up-vinyl-gaps-and-holes/)

To remove hair, I've always used needle nose pliers, whether it's dolls or ponies, and I never have too many issues with tearing plugs.

Thank you! That's the one I was looking for! :D

Needle Nose pliers are great, but they have always been too wide for me. That's why I love hemostats. They are longer than Needle nose, maintain the needle nose, and are thinner. They can fit inside smaller gaps much easier. I used needle nose on my ponies for years, then tried a pair of hemostats and never went back!

Well, a run down of costs...
Hair: $10 for two hanks
Acetone: $1-2, depending on the store. It removes the paint perfectly, without smudging
Paint: anywhere from $1 to $5, depending on brand and quality.
Brushes: Varies. $3-6 for a good detail brush.
Rehair tool: $14 from Dollyhair if you don't have one. They are AMAZING. Rerooting with needle/thread on a doll can drive you mad.

Aaand... that's all the supplies I can think of.

Leprechaun girls: My first two shots at making a persona. First was Frankie, who was a little too washed out for me. Also decided I liked silver more than gold, and came up with a reasonable reason for it over gold. She still needs a new face. And maybe some curl in her hair. Second was Venus aka Fox at the moment, who I like? But just doesn't feel like me. Also rehaired, also needs a face.
Second my Jackalopes, who all have ears, but are in the slow, sloow process of me getting around to rehairing them. Clawdeen is actually done, and waits for the others so she can get her horns. Garboyle head I just need to flock, since he'll have short hair, and decide if I want to make him a beard or not. He's actually not a jackalope, but the winged German bunny similar. My friend Chris is weird and reeally into German Metal, so with him already coming with wings it fits. Ghoulia also needs her paint redone- after it settled, it doesn't match her skin tone at aaall. Yellow Howleen is on hold, until I order more hair- I am out of yellow. And everyone else is bald.

Woo punctuality! I'm okay on it, because when I realized I wasn't going to be done I got everyone like, $5 in random gift bag fillings, so they still got presents.

I keep meaning to try apoxy sculpt, but then the pound of sculpey is right there when I start working. Like when the naga started as an experiment.

Speaking of which, minor update, I boiled it and
good news: it worked, the tail is holding on (thus far) though I couldn't keep it as nicely tapered (too thin, would've chipped)
Bad news: acrylic paint won't stick to the rubber/silicone, after being touched at least >_> I'll have to figure it out. Car interior paint maybe?

Try using a primer first. You can get spray primers, or paintish. It helps with odd materials.

Finally got around to posting the other pictures from yesterday. Any pointers or advice are welcome as I have a few questions to ask with each corresponding picture

Her signature outfit, I might need to find someone who is good at making clothes and commission them to making this for her.

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Her hair style and color set I'm aiming for.

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Question 1: Where the horizontal line of plugs I added, there were SO MANY little plugs, that I'm thinking of just doing less plugs there, would it make a difference if I did that, compared to following the original plugs?? I tried spacing like the other hair plugs after it

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

I plan to give her that abbey effect with the hair, on top it's green, but under it's the other color, and where the other colored line is, is what color I will root. I checked out some liv wigs I have that had the same effect and I think I planned it right.

Question 2: How far should the line for thatching go and if I wanted to match the hair style I drew on the earlier picture, is that the right placement for the color to match the style I drew??

Question 3: Where her flocked area was, did I add too many plugs or should that be enough?

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

The green horizontal line of plugs I think would be ok to add since there are no plugs there and that looks like a lot of space to have no hair. >,<;

To make her super long pony tail vines, I think adding three plugs there and adding really long hair and braiding them into the pony tails is a good idea.

In regard to the jackalopes, the ears are looking great! Can't wait to see your wolpertinger :) those critters are so cute.

In regard to the hair seam/part/split I just finished one amd had to extend the part further than the original plan called for in order to get the hair to fall well and cover bald spots. I suggest make it to the back of the top of the head, and if you need it longer after you are done Rehairing, then lengthen it.

Learn from my mistake though, start Rehairing from the bottom and work your way up. I didn't And the hair was constantly getting in the way.

A: You need all those little holes. They make up the edge of the hair and without them she won't really have a hair line, and will look bald. However, because her hair goes all the way down, you should only follow the hair on the side to a bit past where her head starts sloping down. You also need a double row, and to criss cross them so that your part line isn't bald. In a lot of ways she's a bad doll to start with? because her plugs are unclear.
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

She isn't the best part example, because she was a GB Cleo and the line was only for her tinsel, but. Also, it's not a bad idea for bangs, or any other two color point, like where you have the pink in front as a double row of tight plugs with crosshatching, because again otherwise you end up with bald patches.

I plan to give her that abbey effect with the hair, on top it's green, but under it's the other color, and where the other colored line is, is what color I will root. I checked out some liv wigs I have that had the same effect and I think I planned it right.

You don't need to worry about it for in the back though, because the way the hair falls that'll just blend on it's own. I would do the last two rows of plugs on the bottom above the hairline in matching color as well, personally, but I like thicker colors.

Question 2: How far should the line for thatching go and if I wanted to match the hair style I drew on the earlier picture, is that the right placement for the color to match the style I drew??
This one depends on how far back you want her part to go. Most MH dolls now go to around where the head stops being flat on top, and curves downward.

Question 3: Where her flocked area was, did I add too many plugs or should that be enough?

For mine, I did the solid hairline, and then just matched the inside to the already plugged side. Just go with what feels right when you rehair, and add more if you need them. If her hair seeems thin while you're hairing, it'll start feeling thicker pretty fast- those heads fill.

Trying to show what I did.. it's harder to see, with all the hair in the way.

The silver dip was already there on one side? So I mirrored it when I brought it back to the line.

The green horizontal line of plugs I think would be ok to add since there are no plugs there and that looks like a lot of space to have no hair. >,<;
Never be afraid to add plugs, but be careful it doesn't get ridiculously thick. This would be fine though.

To make her super long pony tail vines, I think adding three plugs there and adding really long hair and braiding them into the pony tails is a good idea.
I'd double the plugs unless you want them really thin. Cupid's braid, which is thin? Is 6 plugs total. Also! If you want a rounder braid, I'd suggest a 4 strand; they're not as flat as 3 strand tend to be.

Thanks! This'll really come in handy once I begin after getting the hair.

As for the hairline part, I may have worded that wrong, my fault. The hairline where it first starts (where purple arrow is pointed) I know I'd have to do, I was referring to this part right here, in the rectangle:
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

That part was the part I was asking about of adding less plugs that are already there.

I looked through my other dolls heads (DT Frankie, Sig Rochelle, Sig Venus and Sig Robecca) to see if they're rooted with a small patch like that, but it seems like only Venus has it.

I know I'm still green behind the ears to act like I know what I'm talking about, but I think those extra line(s) of plugs is so that the hair sticks up more for Venus' particular hairstyle.

I'm actually glad this thread was started, it's like a Customs Discussion thread so that way, not too many topics are mixed in the main discussion thread. :P

MM Also need to alter her hat a little. She's got a cute tri-corn hat to gowith her outfit. I forgot to photograph her with it on.

Maniah she is breathtaking, absolutly gorgeous!  If you do not mind me asking, did you make her clothes?

Thank you! I did not make her clothes, though eventually I would love to be able to sew even half this good! The outfit came from JonnaJonzan on Etsy. http://www.etsy.com/listing/117370139/monster-high-clothes-outfit-pirate?ref=usr_faveitems Though I removed the boobie rivets that the corset originally had. Her clothing generally fits really well, but this corset is a bit large and I have to overlap it past the velcro to make it fit well. I keep meaning to add some more velcro to it.

She is lovely! i love her hair!

Thank you so much! I am so happy with how her hair came out. I was going for a sunbleached bonde and I wan't sure how the highlights of golden goddess would look, but I am happy. I want to shorten it to about her knees, or maybe mid thigh.

lol. It is too long though. It makes her tip over easy, and it makes her head tilt back. And if I manage to make her fox tail, then tha'ts just more weight in the back to tip her... Hmm.. Though I suppose I could fill the base of her stand with some old apoxie sculpt that is too old to sculpt with, so it's a heavier base.. She'll still probably get a haircut ;)

Of the dolls I've rehaired, I only tried to thatch the part after plugging once, and yeah it's harder than it should be. Now I just root the hair with the part first, so it's there. Then I tie half of it down while I work on the rest of the head so it can't mess itself up.

That is a seriously creepy pony. :)

To those of you who do reroots......what tool do you use?  I see dollyhair sells them but I've also seen a tutorial with someone who made their own with a pencil.

I have been using Dollyhair's reroot tool, but the needles that come with it, seem to be too fragile at least to me. I broke all three in a couple of days.  After a few minutes of frustration, I got a few of my own needles (which were a bit thicker) and tried to snap the hole parts open with a wire cutter (there's probably a better tool for this than a wire cutter, but I didn't have it and I was frustrated). I did ruin a couple of needles in the process, but in my third try I got the one that I have been using until now and it hasn't broken since. :satisfied: It could be that the size that Dollyhair sells with the reroot tool wasn't the right size for me.

I do have a second reroot tool from Etsy, but I haven't tried it yet.

Smallest needle you can find (probably a beading needle if you don't have the tiny tapestry ones) and an exacto knife handle. size 28 in tapestry needles worked for me, they were something like this http://www.joann.com/images/05/01/4/xprd50147_z.jpg They will break eventually, so buy in bulk!

BTW, even the smallest ones in most assortment packs (like this http://www.joann.com/dritz-craft-needles-assortment-25-pkg/prd3101/ ) will be too big for doll plugs, and you would risk tearing.

it's all up to you. Give it a try but pace your self because it takes time to rehair.

I use a reroot tool that I make myself. I also sell them with spare needles, but not currently. Once my bandages from surgery are removed I will open shop again.

I use a size 22 tapestry needle or a size 9 embroidery needle. If not nose exact numbers, then close to it. I sand them at an angle with a dremmel :)

No. The knots stop it from getting out- I use that method on ponies. And on one doll, and it takes foreeeever.

I use the dollyhair tool, and have just bought my own needles since. My main advice on those is make sure you get metal ones, not the ceramic or whatever the cheapest are made of, because those snap like wenches when you cut them. I use the wirecutter on my needle nose pliers (best tool eeever for customizing) to trim, and also enjoy a slant vs straight.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VuUXcRFbWY4 Here is a video tutorial on thatching :)

The good thing about the hair you used is that Nylon shapes really well with boiling water. So if you want to tame the hair a bit so it lays flatter, and make the part stay better, you can give her a dunk in or pour some boiling water over her head.

Just always remember to do that BEFORE doing any painting of your own on the doll :)

I have a question.

Now that I know Deuce's snake hair can be removed I'm thinking about picking a double of him up, pulling his snakes off and hairing him.

Since he doesn't already have holes to put the hair in how would I go about making them?

You can make holes with a push pin or something similar. You can do it right with the tool if you are using a rehairing tool. I have no idea if he has a soft skull though.

Once you remove all of the hard plastic "hair" yes, he is rootable! However, there's a deep indent/hole for the snake hawk. This guide is supposed to be good for filling in large holes for rooting: http://www.nonaptime.com/2013/02/tutorial-patching-up-vinyl-gaps-and-holes/ (http://www.nonaptime.com/2013/02/tutorial-patching-up-vinyl-gaps-and-holes/)

Hmmm.

From the de-snaking tutorial the hole doesn't look to be that big. I'm debating whether I could get away with just giving Deuce a little bit of a comb over to hide it or whether to fork out and wait for the latex glue (I'm in the UK and it doesn't look like it's available over here).

The push pin idea is good though.

Ok I just bought Deuce Gordon as a merman of ebay. The lady had a sig Deuce with and mermaid tail.
Need some help with what to do with him.

I want to do some sculpting like arm fins. oo a back fin?!
Remove the snakes on his head but what should do?

Color palette should be green black and a bit of yellow.

the ebay auction is over this is his link. http://www.ebay.com/itm/390577193489?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

I do think I could make something cool out of this.

You could do some kind of coral or anemone on the head...

I would definitely do some sort of fins on his back!! Arm fins would be cool too... Also hat about extending his "snakes" down a bit longer to make some sort of eel like hair... Or eel cuffs... Lol... Just throwing out stuff :)

Totally off topic, but did you notice that skelita in the background? I am in awe of the design yet freaked out at the same time  that person does great job on eyes, love the soft look.

Here is a WIP pic of the clown I am working on now. I think I am done with her face now. Dress was a La De Da Cyanne as Viva La France, I removed the heart and added the pom poms and a few more layers of fabric to the skirt. I have to order her wig, shoes, and stockings tomorrow when I get paid. Opinions welcome!

Her nose is so pink. But, if it was red it would melt into her lips so the pink is good. She looks great, and juuust a touch kreepy, but so do most clowns.

So, while prepping my newest project, I discovered a few interesting things about Deuce's head. After some patience, an hair dryer, and a few applications of an xacto knife I got Deuce's snakes out without tearing up any of his head scales, which I want to keep. After doing so, I found out a few things, like that the scales have a gap between themselves and their head, and there are no actual holes in Scaris at least, just some deeper dents.

I am also looking for opinions- I'm going to turn him into a dragon boy for my Jina to settle on (she enjoys the draping), and I plan to give him a mohawk of actual hair. I'm debating if I want to use yarn, and make it more of a puffy, fluffy, spiked hair, or actual hair to drape. I'm also unsure if I want to do him in blue/teal, or more hotpink/orange or hotpink/red. I don't plan to repaint his skin, though I may add in some scales here and there.
Or a mix, similar to one of my RP charries: visitors can't see pics , please register or login
Title: Project "Wig"
Post by: Feyona on April 27, 2013, 12:27:51 AM
I started and can't finish for a few month a wig. It's my first wig and I stuck with the top. Not sure when will I get inspiration for it to finish. It also will need to be trimmed and styled. And since I used strawberry saran (not wise) along with pumpkin spice nylon, I will not be able to use a curler or any heat if I don't want my highlits to melt. Sigh.

I'm working on turning a CAM vampire into a CAM unicorn :) I've just bought her a very lovely outfit, though no shoes yet, and am currently trying to find her a wig - long blonde Liv wig or the CAM Siren wig, what does anyone thing? :)
She'll be getting edits to her face up soon XD

Anyone have any tips for restoring her factory eyes? They're beautiful, but I'm afraid in the spa they became a tiny bit scratched. I think I'd like to change their iris colour as well. What paints should I use, etc? I'll be removing her fangs as well :)

Also - to hold the unicorn horn on, does anyone have any tips? It keeps falling off her if she gets a jolt or it shifts a little.

That's actually really useful. Thanks.

I want to get a second Scaris Deuce and pull out the snake-hawk and scales to give him real hair. I was worried that it was actually a hole not just a big dent.

As for customs, I'm still trying to find a blonde wig for my Werewolf CAM because I don't want to repaint her until I have it.

And I'm sort of vaguely, possibly, thinking about the Jareth & Sarah custom as mentioned on the Customs Ideas thread. It's mostly predicated on whether I could get my hands on a second Jackson.

Plus I have no idea which ghoul would work best as Sarah.

A little question that goes out to all you crafty customizers: what type of sealant do you use when you do fullbody repaints? A lot of people have recommended Mr. Super Clear to me, but it's so costly to import :(

I have seen it suggested Testors Dullcote on the body, and MSC on the head because MSC will flake off of the body, but TD will not. Of course, if it's going on over a layer of paint, both should work fine.

I bough it for $10-$12 with free shipping option from Chinese seller. I don't think it's really costly... Especially when it comes to OOAK, it's very important to use high-quality products for your custom projects.

Do you know a place where you could import it from? This is the sealant that everybody recommends, but we don't have it in Finland and I haven't found a store that can ship it internationally yet.

I was thinking about sealant myself.

Do you think it'd be possible to get away with just using sealant made for acrylic paint (or whatever other medium)?

There's also some sealant I've seen made for things like Warhammer, to seal the paint onto those little figurines, would that work?

I have been using a local sealant for acrylic paint, at least for now. But I have only used it on the face, not the body. So far, it seems to be fine.

By the way, I now noticed that Feyona answered my previous question about where to import MSC from.  There are some Chinese sellers on Ebay that ship abroad, though delivery takes 45 working days.

I have seen some sellers on German ebay and the cheapest option was 18€, including shipping.
That is kind of costly to me when I hear some people just buy it for 5$ on amazon.com ;)

Okay, I think I'll stick to MSC then.
Thanks for the input, guys! :)

I see. I am just not really sure what is costly in Germany. But I agree that 18 euros ($20 ?) is kind of expensive. If I'd live in Ukraine (I left it 3,5 years ago), I couldn't afford it at all with our salaries.
I ordered mine from Chinese seller. But I learned to close my eyes when I spend money on my hobby and just buy whatever works better according to information from famous ooakers. There is a proverb, I believe, from England. I am not that rich to buy cheap things. It worked so many-many-many times for me. Every time I buy something cheaper, it just doesn't work properly. You can use alternative tools, but not cheap art-stuff. Wish you to find the best priced MSC.

Her outfit breaks down into 3 parts: her top, her bottom (both black) and her dress.

Her top is a bare shoulder, bare midriff shirt like this:

Her bottom is a pair of stretchy capris leggings right at or below her knees like these:

Stockings (both sexy and casual) and tights are always desired as it seems. Any type of pants for the girls and long pants for the boys. The boys lack outfits in general because there are so few of them and no fashion packs, so I guess any clothing for boys is wanted ^^

I've tried that? and the paints just seem to clump on the metal, and never, ever go near the point itself; just bubble behind it. Pencil might help though. They're sealed now, so I could always wipe off something I don't like.

Also, head removal is driving me bonkers.  I ended up breaking the back of one twin's neck (thankfully her hair will hide it)!

Just finishing up my first attempt at doll clothes, ever  I haven't been near a sewing machine in about 5 years , but I had lots of fun sewing this today. It turned out well enough that I think I want to sew more doll clothes  I got the kimono/yukata pattern from DGRequiem's etsy page and I think it turned out very nice!

Re-hairing Catrine in royal purple, repainting werecat twin faces, and making a blue version of thatg33kgirl's infamous MH Pinkie Pie doll.  (I'm using an Abby for the body, and thinking of re-using that Abby's hair for the mane/tail.)

Also, head removal is driving me bonkers.  I ended up breaking the back of one twin's neck (thankfully her hair will hide it)!

Are you using any heat to soften up the heads when you remove them?  I use a heating pad, others recommend a hair dryer, some say running their heads under hot water, anything to get the vinyl to heat up and come off easier.  Makes head removal SO much easier!

I learned that the hard way.  The other werecats lost their heads a lot more easily.

My first attempt at a custom doll. She was a rescue from someone else's attempt to customize.

I am working on a custom Deuce, with real hair, my first custom. So far I have learned that eyes suck to paint, and don't get acetone on the bodies, cause they kinda melt >_<

Finally gave my leprechauns faces. Not sure I'm happy with their eyes though... I feel like I need to add eyelashes, but I'm pretty terrible at them... what do you guys think?
personally i love the eyes as is.
i think sometime the lashes are a bit too much.
but this amount seems perfect.
still lovely, but not overly flashy

I didn't think I would attempt another reroot but so much for that notion. I'm using a different method than my first and I like it a lot better. I'm also using more than one color. So much for my first reroot being my last! I hope this one is an improvement.

Edit: Here's the link in case anyone is curious:

Catrine, why must you have so much glue inside your head?  I just want to take that lavender out!

(Is it possible to leave the pink streak from her bangs in, while still replacing the rest of her hair?)

Teeechnically, but it's pretty damn hard to do. I personally find trimming down the color you want to remove, and then carefully pulling it out from the inside works best, that way if you accidentally grab the color you want to keep you can let go and pull it back out to normal length.
