Just finished styling Lyra, of whom there were WIPs of here (http://mlparena.com/mlp/index.php/topic,326134.msg691264.html)... And here she is!

There's no product in her hair, it was just styled with hot water then dried!
She's not for sale unfortunately, as she was my prototype to try and figure out rehairing in the first place, so she has some flaws... For one, her neck plug snapped while I was trying to re-attach her head (before I learned about boiling to make it easier to pop the head on/off, whoops), so her head's glued in place... I might be selling similar ones later, though, or if you're really interested, just PM me!

I...must to this to my spare Twilight.
orr.....give her to you =p
-
I know I have yarn hanging around here somewhere...
-
She looks awesome! :D
I can't wait to try out your technique! :)

Haha, I AM in the process of rehairing the whole mane 6 with this method, so if you wanted yours to be the first twilight done, I'd be more than happy!
-
Oh wow, she looks absolutely amazing! :D
-
Oh love the mane and tail, that is the yarn right? I have a project with a Breyer into a an MLP that would work great on.
-
She looks great! Nice work!
-
Brilliant! Much more accurate than most nylon styles I have seen <3
-
What cute work!
-
OMG, that turned out AWESOME! I'm really loving your technique, and it makes the styling look amazing! I might have to give it a try. I bet you'll get a ton of rehair commissions!
-
Wow!! How great is that!!
Your WIP in the other thread is great, too. Especially for Pinkie and her wild curls this is perfect (Haha, the 80s hair is too cute!) and Sundance and Lyra turned out cavity-inducingly sweet, too.
To me it seems like this is the perfect method to create lush and show-accurate hairstyles for most of the the G4 ponies, is it? I am amazed how shiny combed out yarn can be - never would have thought that!
I can't wait to see a step-by-step tutorial! (However I wonder whether I can find such a kind of yarn over here?)

Well, my point is, its not QUITE the color you used.

I think it's a pretty good match all things considering.
It would be terribly difficult to find yarn the exact shade short of dyeing it yourself.
I think we can agree this Lyra looks amazing with her wonderfully silky locks :)

I'm just bothered by little things like that. >.>

Thank you! I already put a tutorial up here (http://mlparena.com/mlp/index.php/topic,326327.0.html), actually!
Lyra's hair in the show in white and pale BLUE not green though. >.>
It was the best color in stock I could work with. Lyra's hair is more of a mint blue-green, but the other light blue option in the local yarn store was a darker-than-rainbow-dash true blue, and it would have just looked ridiculous on Lyra. Since I wasn't planning on selling this and it was essentially a personal experiment, I wasn't going to be that picky. If it were for an actual sale or something, I would have ordered this color (http://www.bernat.com/data/product/sample/sample_16410404742.jpg) online, but I didn't want to sit around waiting on shipping times!

Looks neat.
I wonder if it's possible to blend together different colours of yarn?

It definitely is! You can separate the twisted-together individual strands of yarn and then bunch together different colors to make it really blendy, or just use a different color per plug. You can even get self-striping or any other kind of color-mix yarn and let it do the color blending for you!

You'd better take that grey thing up with Hasbro, then. After all, she was officially released as the "grey pegasus."
Not all customs are going to be 100% accurate to each individual's perception of a character. This is a really cool custom, let's just leave it at that :)

You just beat me to it. Thanks for expressing it more politely than I could. :worship:

Exactly. Waaaaay more politely! Lol! What's that thing every mother teaches their kids? If you can't say something nice...
-
She looks fantastic!! :O I really like the re-hair job you did on Pinkie, too :) This makes me want to work on styling hair
-
Exactly. Waaaaay more politely! Lol! What's that thing every mother teaches their kids? If you can't say something nice...
... Because my little "I have the dumb" streak just kicked in (sorry) - does that mean we agree on this, or was this irony?
However, apart from the fact that no "closer" shade was in stock, I have a slight deuteranomaly* - and seeing a patronizing response just because of a small colour mismatch scares me.
__
* my green cones behave a bit weird. I can still see all colours, but I tend to see both numbers on Ishihara colour tests and have difficulties in telling very close shades of red, orange and yellow apart.

She looks amazing!

The custom looks fine to me, I don't see the problem with the color that some are seeing.

Well, my point is, its not QUITE the color you used.
If we go by this drawing then all customizers doing show accurate customs have to paint two of her legs a darker color than the other two.

That's shading.
Anyway, we're getting off topic.
BACK TO THE CUSTOM ITSELF
-

BACK TO THE CUSTOM ITSELF
LOL! I'm actually defending the custom and customizer; just so you know.
And yes, I know it's shading, my point is if we're going to nitpick this pony because the color of the hair does not exactly match what we see on the TV/monitor then the nit pickers must also nitpick things like 'shading'. Why not nitpick the animators considering the body has shading but the hair has very little, which is not natural. There should be just as much shading in the hair as there is everywhere else and that doesn't happen. So I don't get the critique on the hair since it was as close as the customizer was able to find.
The custom is more realistic in the hair than the animation is, therefor the custom would be more accurate to what you'd actually see if the image of the pony jumped out of the computer monitor into reality.
-
Aww she's adorable! I think she looks great with the colors you picked out. :3

Oh no my friend, we be in total agreement! :)
And yes, back to the topic at hand. This technique is awesome and SilkSpindle did a really fantastic job with this girl. This is a custom, it's up to the artist's own interpretation, so who cares if the hair is a shade off from whatever color your tv monitor is at? In all reality, depending on what your tv IS set at, we could ALL be seeing different colors! It's actually the greatest mystery of all time as to what color Lyra's hair actually is!! NOOOO OOOONE KNOOOOOWS!! OOOOOOOHHHHHHH

she looks fabulous :D I love the yarn rehair technique you use! (and adore the tutorial, thank you so much for sharing)
this is a thread for an artist to show off THEIR interpretation of a pony. NOT a place to debate what you think she should have done.
Please keep it on topic.

You win the internets XD This takes me back to my days working with a publisher.
I think this discussion has brought up some super interesting ideas for customs, actually. It's got me thinking, at least! And that's one of the great things about the customs forum, we can inspire each other, right? :)

Buuut if you take it that way, kay. -shrugs-

But...Pantone not perfect either! I took a snippet off the color of the image on this thread...

Starly: It was rude, no one is taking anything some weird way. But feel free to pretend we're all nuts.
The rehairing looks KILLER and I think this method will allow folks more control over matching the hairstyles in the show. Really slick work <3
-
OMG. This custom is absolutely amazing!!! Awesome job - she is gorgeous!!
-
This is a beautiful custom using a really interesting technique. I love how soft her hair looks! I hope you don't let people with criticism that is rude and not constructive get you down. She is really lovely!
-

Totally. I want to see Fluttershy this way. I think it could get her the perfect combination of volume and sleekness that her heir style requires. I hope you'll make lots more to show us! :)

I'd love to see a full set of the main 6! I was taking a look at some of the G1's on one of the other threads and I think they look awesome!

That's my thought exactly! This really gets those show accurate results that are next to impossible to achieve with nylon.

OK, I will REPEAT. this is NOT a debate about what color the artist should have used.
any more off topic comments will be removed. Have some respect for the artist and her work.

I just want to pet his Lyra.
I'm super excited to get my Twilight from the lovely SilkSpindle.
I WILL PET HER FOREVER AND FOREVER

Absolutely!!! And Twilight and Apple Jack and Rainbow Dash (Rarity has, in my eyes, more of a nylonesque hairdo, hasn't she?) and the CMC and Mrs. Cake's updo and Babs Seed's choppy hair and Hoity Toity's Rokoko/Lagerfeld wig - if you manage to leave the strands long enough, I am sure one could also create Celestia's and Luna's floooooowwwing manes...
SilkSpindle, you see, there's lots of work for you now!

*gigglesnort* OK. You won this thread.
I'm super excited to get my Twilight from the lovely SilkSpindle.
Umm... could you, please, post photos once you have her? I'd love to see whether the finished Twilight correlates with my imagination - or maybe even exceeds it?

Aahh gosh so many nice comments while I was away! And color theory madness, lol...
Anyway, I am currently working on making the whole mane 6!
Here's a WIP of fluttershy with bedhead, finishing her at some point today:

And here's a mini-sized test of some Rarity curls to try out boil perming, it works!

I'll use a slightly lighter purple if I can get it, it's a surprisingly hard color to find in (nice) yarn. ^^; Might order this, yarn stock image vs. eyedropper'd (non-gradient) rarity screenshot:

But Rarity's hair has such a variance of purple tones, it's a hard choice to make...
-
I need to keep an eye on you, I may need a few ponies ;)
-
I will be spamming the brag thread when Twilight comes home.
Could be a while, she only got shipped off today.
Silky, please let me know when she gets to you :)

I will! :whoa:
I managed to get a hold of my own Twilight in the meantime, who I'll be testing the rehair on first... I was going to try out adding some extra plug holes in the front of the head to make better shaped bangs, since I couldn't get quite that much bang volume on Lyra when I tried to get it to lay the same way. I'll post photos on that one as I work on it! (I understand if you don't want me punching holes in your twilight though, I'll PM you once I've done my test version for your preference, haha)

You're right. I need to recalibrate my monitor. And I think the CMYK conversion had an effect too.
I was just being a wiseacre.
-
Cuute! I love your re-hairs :D
-
Silk, you did an awesome job with Lyra! For using no product, her hair style is just amazing. Excellent work:). Don't listen to neighsayers, clearly they love the smell of their own :toot: too much.
-
HOw cool! I love how the yarn has such body to it while remaining soft and smooth looking.
-
Love the rarity curl. I did some ringlets on one of my MH dolls who has a yawn wig and was really pleasantly surprised that it took a boil perm so well. It really is very versatile!
-
Oh my gosh that rarity curl is amazing!
The more I look at these rehairs, the more I fall in love with them. <3
-
So pretty! Lyra has such great minty colors. Her mane and tail look so soft and shiny.
-
She looks amazing :D Hard to believe it's yarn! I thought it was nylon hair! It looks fab :D
-
Looks great!

Amazing! I wish Shinning Armor's hair was like that. That's fantastic!
