Title: Yet another fursuit thread: The Making of Flapjack (pic heavy)
Post by: silverdragon54 on March 19, 2013, 11:35:59 PM
Confound these ponies...they drive me to create. My self-imposed deadline for finishing this guy is April 26, to be debuted at Calgary Expo. Time is running out and I need all the good vibes I can get right now. :) There aren't many WIP pics right now...I never remember to take them. ^^; I have to work on that. Anyhoo, here's what I have so far.

As much as I love my dragon suits, I wanted a non-fantasy species too. I also really wanted to try making something with hooves. I thought performing at Stampede breakfasts would be a blast, so a horse was the natural choice. He was going to be a generic toony horse at first, but that was before I fell in love with FiM. Soon enough I couldn't resist giving my horse a cutie mark. Making him a pony opened up a whole rainbow of colors to use too. ;) Thus, Flapjack was born! (I don't have a pic scanned in, but his cutie mark will be 3 little pancakes in a triangle formation.)

I started with the feet. It seemed appropriate to use cowboy boots, and Gracie agrees.

For the hoof itself, I started with a 2-litre Coke bottle of all things. I took 2 layers of the hoof shape and MUMMIFIED it in duct tape. A couple of upholstery tacks and a generous layer of Shoe Goo later, I ended up with this.

I can't have Flapjack running around in duct tape hooves, now can I?

Funny story here...to give the hooves some rigidity, I filled the space between the hoof shell and the boot with expanding foam. I neglected to account for just how much the foam would expand. I didn't overfill it or anything like that, but I didn't think to stuff the boot first. The foam expanded downward and crushed the top of the boot in. I spent a couple hours hacking away with a serrated knife, grumbling and cursing, but I carved enough out that I can actually get my feet into them. Derp!

I'll have to get a pic of the finished feet before I fur them, and a pic of the leg padding. I'm especially pleased with how they look together! :accomplished: Pardon the striped pj pants. They just happen to show off the shape pretty nicely.

The head is going to be the hardest part. It's in about 50 pieces right now, and if it doesn't work there's no way I can arrange for a replacement in time. :faint: At the very least, I was able to get the fur locally instead of ordering online. The artist that made my black dragon suit had just enough blue fur left over from one of her personal suits. The pile is a bit denser than what I had in mind, but it'll do! Next weekend (God willing!) I'll be ready to make the bodysuit pattern. Gotta take some pics of that...duct tape dummies are always fun. ^.^

A mini progress update! There are a few new pics, but they're on my phone and I don't have my microSD adapter with me at the moment.

I picked up the fur yesterday and it is 4 metres of glorious cobalt softness. I only got a few pieces of the head glued together, but most of the rest are prepped and ready to go. This week's tasks are sewing the leg padding to a pair of Under Armor pants (right side done, left side tacked in place), and furring the feet.

Now I need to stop giving myself nightmares over how much work sewing on that cutie mark is going to be. :yikes:

Looking good so far.  You'll have to let us know which breakfasts you'll be at so we can come by and say hi, or maybe 'hay' :)

I'm envious that you got the hooves to work that way.  I was never as clever.  Can't wait to see more!

I ran out of duct tape. :( That means tomorrow I get to freak out another hardware store clerk! I guess they think it's a bit odd when a person buys a disposable painter's coverall, 4 or 5 rolls of duct tape, and nothing else. :devious:

You should also buy a shovel, just for the fun of it.

MOAR PICS!

The mask is almost done! Grubby was kind enough to model it for me.

The papercraft pattern that I used only had a female model, so I still have to pad out the muzzle to make a stallion. All of the pieces are cut, and pinned in place for these pics. The pins are what's causing that weird waviness along the edges.

I still don't know if I can pull off the full suit in time, but I'll have at least a partial ready to wear for Calgary Expo!

No weird look this time. I was disappointed.

Each piece of the head has a broadcloth backing. This kind of foam just drinks hot glue, so the seams between pieces weren't very secure. The cloth solved that problem completely. Besides that, it's just foam. :) I'm pretty happy with how this papercraft pattern method is working, but next time I'm just buying a premade resin base! :dizzy:

Oh gawd, never again! Making a Christmas village house a few years back there was an...incident. I managed to not lose any skin, but I'll still never live it down. ^^;

I have the fur for the feet cut out, and I'm just starting to sew it. The male muzzle is also glued in place now. He's coming together!

This is the unfurred foot. Not much to look at as it is, but it sure gives the leg a nice shape! Funfact: The soles of the cowboy boots will be left exposed so they make that awesome :drama: sound as I walk, without the added weight/expense/impracticality of real horseshoes. I've heard the stories about the poor horse suiter who did thousands of dollars of damage to a hotel's marble floor. >_<

Both feet taped, and ready to make the pattern.

Finally, the fur! I originally planned to use super seal fur like what my black dragon is made of, but I would have needed to order it online which is outrageously expensive. I was lucky enough to buy this from another local suit maker. It's beaver (or possibly teddy) fur so it's a tad longer and much denser. But omg it's so SOFT!!! I'm just in love with it. :lovey:

Update: the new DTD! My sweet, supportive boyfriend spent 4 hours on Saturday taping me up. And he thinks he's the lucky one! Not a fun process, but it'll ensure a proper fit.

Thread by thread, stitchin it together...Flapjack's feet. Cutting out the pattern snip by snip, making sure the seams conceal nicely, it's the perfect color and so hip! Always got to keep in mind my pacing, making sure the fur's correctly facing. I'm stitching Flapjaaaack's feeeeeeet.

I'm very tired and I think I picked up a cold from someone at work.

I certainly hope that you will be supervised with an assistant at all times!  I can't say how you would be able to use your hands should you need to.

No worries there, I never suit without a handler. I'm also going to make wrist escapes in the actual fur sleeves. :)

Good good because I always worry about people's safety in those suits!  It's easy to get into the spirit of things and think you can handle the stresses for an extended period of time, and then next thing you know, you have five people pouring water on you and cutting you out of your pricelessly expensive suit.  ;)

The feet have been furred, the mask has been glued to the balaclava, the sleeves are being sewn up, and I just bought the wig hair to make the mane and tail. I got so much done today, but there's still sooooo much to do! :yikes:

Welp, I think I'm ready to admit that having him ready to wear in a week is unrealistic. An unexpected project at work is competing for my attention, and I'm burning out. :( I'm disappointed, but there's just too much to do, and I refuse to rush through it and put out an inferior product. If I'm still hell-bent on fursuiting at Calgary Expo, I can always wear Lihani. :)

On a more positive note, the head is 90% taped and is looking good, and I've pretty much figured out the wrist escapes. Flapjack WILL be ready to go for Stampede season!
