Title: show me your paint storage
Post by: jupiternwndrlnd on March 19, 2013, 03:14:30 PM
my current paint storage is just not working. the addition of a toddler makes the rack I have difficult to store and use. so I am looking for a new option, and would love to see how everyone stores their paint containers

my current set up (with only half the paint actually ON the rack, the rest are all over my work table...mostly because I have to store said rack in a location that isn't easy to get to....gah):

My paint storage is embarrassing compared to yours... I either leave them on my little customizing table, or I throw them haphazardly into one of three little boxes. ._.

One of these.  Hair in the top, etc below, baits in one large drawer, paint in the bottom.  Kind of exploding ATM...

Mines pretty much the same as this and I wish I had room for something that's easier to organize...so I'm interested to see what others are doing too. XD

I use a media storage unit for my paint and it works really well.

Mine is also a plastic bag, which at the moment is under my kitchen table :) mine are mostly tubes, so are kinda hard to organize :)

I have a similar paint system as Hannaliten has - I've got a wooden cd tower/cabinet that lays on its side.

The plastic cubbies above it are for organizing my current projects so that all their bits stay together.  I've got a plastic bin that's slightly bigger than a large shoebox that holds my hair.

Storage? S-t-o-r-a-g-e..... Nope, sorry, I don't know that word.
My paint is just all over my desk in random locations. Which could explain why I've lost both bottles of my matt black. Been looking for it for weeks >_< I've only got metallic black at the moment.
I did have a small shelf-thing that I used to stack them up on, but why put them away when you're just going to get them out again, right?  :P
Hannaliten:
Now that is organization! If you came over here and tried to customize a pony at my desk, you'd go crazy before you even got started lol.
Not only do you have it all neatly put away, but it's organized by colour too!
Love the random airbrushed box in the corner lol. I've kind of got the same thing going on here. If it's near my desk, it's been used as a testing surface for my airbrush xD
Jupiternwndrlnd:
What about some kind of wall-mounted cabinet? That should (hopefully) be out of reach of your toddler. Or perhaps in some kind of organizer that is kept up on a shelf?
By the way, sorry to get off topic. But I noticed what appears to be Anita's Christmas Red paint on your rack? (I use Anita's paint too, that's why I recognized it lol) be careful if you use that one directly on a pony. I... made that mistake... I had to strip about five ponies that I had painted with it as after about a week it bled into the plastic. Once it's bled in, it doesn't come out. One of them only had a touch of red in it (it was a mixed colour), and it still bled in. I discovered putting a sealant on the area prevents it to some degree, but the best thing so far is to do a silhouette of the symbol in another colour, then go over in red. That seems to work, as long as you don't let the red contact the plastic of the pony.
Sorry, you probably already know this. It's just that after the pain of having to strip hours of work on multiple ponies, I really don't want to see anyone else make the same mistake I did  >_<

hanna, your storage and horde of supplies makes me drooooooooooooooooool

coin -- I LOVE the idea of the cubbies for the project supplies and bits....genius!

I am leaning toward a tower like hanna has (i could keep that in my room...which is off limits to toddlers....its also where the majority of my pony collection is)
OR some sort of plastic bins with a lid....tho I do love the rack you have coin.
I just have this thing about having the paint stacked up all over my work area. i mean, it happens all time ....but with 150 different bottles of paint, its really starts to consume the crafting area and make me bonkers! (well, more so than normal)

It's a nicely sized tower.  I took the door off the front; lighthouses and sailboats aren't really my thing ;)

I tend to spread everything out while I work.  Over the course of about 6 hours, I'll make a huge mess, with hanks of hair hanging off of ponies who are in the cubbies, paint all over the place, and me working on about a 12"x12" space (the pink mat in the middle of the desk).  I've gotten into the habit of just clearing/reorganizing prior to sitting down and starting work.  I really need a better hair filing system; my bin is getting too small.

This is actually a bigger shot of my whole workshop, taken last weekend:

On the right you can just barely see the bookcase with miscellaneous supplies and hair, and my air compressor's hose.  The little enclosure on the right is a closet under my stairs, which my husband converted into an airbrush nook for me.  On the left, is my little black kitty who enjoys sitting on the edge of my desk and supervising my every move.

coinop, I love your airbrushing nook!

I LOVE hannaliten's organization so much. I copied her hair storage method and I LOVE it. LOVE. I may just copy her paint storage method too. ;)

I need pony bins for the ones I'm working on!  Did not know that about the paint bleeding.  I have a red I should check out.  But that means getting up...

Lol! I know that feeling :P
I've only ever had trouble with the red. Everything else has always been fine. I think it's best to be cautious with red paint in general - I don't think it's the brand at fault, red paint just seems to be a little dangerous to certain plastics.

My desk looks a lot like yours Hanna except that I have really no organization at all XD
I did pick up some different sized containers this weekend that were on sale so I can start to organize my crafty stuff. Right now it's kind of all over. I have a round card table for my sewing machine and that stuff, then a large L shaped desk where the paint and such is. I really need a new desk, mine was just what was in the room from when it was an office. I am more than happy to actually have my own room for projects though!

Oh, coinop, that's no mess. Here's the mess I'm working in right now.
I snapped my picture right after my husband had cleaned up the whole desk, so it's all nice and clean.  At the moment, it's a mess again.  I was also given explicit directions that I was not to test out paint on the desk anymore, because he's a partypooper.

My paint storage was handcrafted by my husband's late uncle. All of our paints are not currently out because we just moved into this house 4 months ago and still havent finished unpacking and setting up and haven't done too much customizing since we have been in the new house. The little black things on the side hold odds and ends and are screw organization drawers. All of our baits are in the desk.

Also if you look close into the window on the right you can see a sneak peek into our collection room which I will be posting pics of in the coming weeks.

I finally got the third bedroom of my house back so I'm moving part of my studio into there (I was using my 3 season porch, but it's only good for THREE SEASONS!).  I've had my paints in little desktop drawers from Ikea forever, because I like them to be right there while I'm working.  But since I'll be swapping between rooms now I need something portable.  So now I've got a nice collection of old ammunition cases (welcome to the south!).  They're nice and sturdy, weatherproof and just the right size.  Plus cool looking.  I'll probably get something like CoinOp's CD tower for the inside desk eventually, but the ammo cases look like they'll work pretty well in the meantime.

BTW @CoinOp, get yourself some glass girl!  I have a big ol' piece of glass from an old table top on my desk.  It's the best palate AND I don't have to test colors on my desk!  And it's super easy to clean.  When the paint is dry just peel it off or scrape it away with a razor.  My desk is black, so I keep some white paper underneath part of the glass, that way I can test colors to see what they'll look like against both dark and light backgrounds.  It's DA BOMB YO!

Now I'm dying to see everyone's workspaces!  *off to start new thread*

Right now, I can only work from my  tiny bed room. My desk is a fold away food tray with a kitchen cutting board found at a garage sale and a green plastic organizer tote for paint....and a Subway kids lunch bag with Brave on it holds my hair right now...*ashamed* One day, I will have my own collection room again...One day!

No shame there!  For the longest time my workspace was nothing more than my lap!  And a pile of supplies on half the sofa...

The extra room I have now will eventually become the actual collection room, but it's going to cost me quite a bit to do it the way I want.  So I figured it would be used better for working for now, at least until I've saved up enough to start building my display cabinets.

Mine are all over the place at the moment, but they WERE in colour order in a low under the bed clear storage container, but everytime I took what I needed out, I just never put it back again so there on the table, in the cupboard, on the bench, and ones ive not used since sorting them, are still in that container lol!

I keep all of my paint in this tote that says MLP on it. I like to bring it downstairs after my toddler goes to bed since my pony room is next to his room. I have more than paint in there too. I have everything I need!

Thank you! I thought the colors went well with my hot pink room. :P

Jupi, my bags are portable, but they definitely don't keep little fingers out. I think since they're so colorful they tempt fingers lol!

Along with other random things that I sometimes use, like make-up sponges, crystals, and such like. The large crystals in the pic are the ones I used for making a baby G1 TE some years back - sitll haven't used the rest of them! XD

i LOVE my new workdesk, but sadly im still working on figuring out somewhere to put my paint. i have an idea but i just need to find/make/alter something to fit.

the space on the back under the cubbies i want to fit a wire or wood grid to store my acrylic and miniature paint into. right now i just have it in a shoebox and in random empty spots. >.< ruinin my mojo =P

have works in progress in the open cubby (which is Censored atm cause i have a group challenge pony up there.) along with primer and acetone bottles etc. i cant leave any ponies im working on on the desk cause the inlaws cat chews on ponies.

upper left cubby has my sewing kit (wood chest), emergency munchies, and tape... lol MY cat loves to chew or eat tape or crinkley plastic... all of our animals are insane =P

below that i have some of my miniature supplies, and the small cubbies below that is miniature paint, random knick knacks, and some candles/cat treats...

upper right corner is drawing supplies

under that is my paint pallets and water dish

below that is more knick knackery and miscellanious extra acrylics and customizing stuffs

i love how instead of having a stupid keyboard tray come out it has a shelf the length of the whole desktop that rolls out that i can work on if i have too much spread out on the desk itself. =]

LOL If I cleared off my desk in the back (since I don't use that area but to stack stuff) I would have room!! OMG Brilliant! Thank you!!
