Title: Keeping G4's in a box?
Post by: snwbear24 on March 10, 2013, 11:53:05 AM
I see a lot of people on the sales thread selling their G4's but they have been deboxed? I guess I am treating them like they will be like the G1's eventually and keep them in the boxes. I learned my lesson with the G1's when i ripped them all open out of the boxes when I was little lol. What do you guys think? Keep them in the box?

I unbox all my G4s. I want to hold and brush and style them :lovey:

Thats a great question!  ^.^

I received my first G4 ever from a member here boxed and I dont want to open it...although I'm very tempted!

She's good for displaying for now though

Interested in what others opinions on this are though!  :)

I have deboxed my FS Pinkie Pie, Pinkie Pies car and my blind bags, everything els is in box  :P I like it better that way. for the same reason you do plus that they look really nice in their boxes and you dont have to worry about losing accessories!

I de-box everything LOL I am like an excited kid at Christmas!!  I love styling their manes!!  I will try and make clothes for them at some point too!!   However, that said, I understand the reasons behind those who like to keep MIB.  Even now, the ponies are worth more MIB than on their own.  If I had the money I'd buy 2 of everything, that way I'd have a set MIB which will gain more in value than my de-boxed set which will satisfy my lust for un-boxing my ponies  :satisfied:

I can't keep anything MIB unless I already have one deboxed. :D

For me there is a very large difference between G1 and G4. While there were some collectors back in the 80s they were of a much much smaller number than now - most toys were purchased with the intention of them being opened and played with. Now a large number of MLPs make it straight from shelves into the hands of collectors. This ensures that the numbers of MIB/MOC G1s and G2s will always be much lower than those of G3s and, even more so, G4s.

We can see with G3 what happens when collectors collect a current toy - you end up with lots of ponies still in brand new, in box conditions. And I am sure the same will be true of G4 in future years, in fact with so many people keeping ponies in box, I wouldnt be surprised if when it comes to ebay in years to come more MIB ponies show up than their loose equivalents.

Can't play with a pony that's still in a box!

G1 - keep 'em boxed. G4 - free those ponies! :enthralled:

I always thought I'd never keep anything in its box. But recently a kind friend got me a G3 Rainbow Dash from a store clear out, and she'll stay in her box for now. I doesn't have anything to do with devaluing her much though, her hair is just pinned up so nicely in the box that I feel no need to mess with it. She looks really pretty this way.

Value doesn't really factor into my collecting (Well, given, the cost at which I have to buy collection pieces does. Not much room in my wallet currently.)
Sure, it's fun to know a pony or toy I own is worth a lot, but if all these toys were worth 50 cents a piece I would still want them just as much. So if I feel like taking what I buy out of the box, to play with it or display it, then out of the box it goes, and I don't much care if it's worth less afterwards, since this is what allows me to enjoy my collection.

Needless to say, there is nothing wrong with keeping toys boxed, or on their cards for whatever reason. It's just not for me.
The most important thing is to make sure the way you collect brings you enjoyment.

I unbox them.  I don't have the room for ponies MIB, and I like looking at them out of the box!

Basic and special ones stay in, FS and BB (of course) come out.

I almost always debox my G4 ponies, but sometimes I keep the box or the card it came on. My hope since I was little was to save my ponies for my kids in the future, so I don't plan on selling them.

I did, however, leave my Zecora in her box because she is so special and her box is very decorative and pretty.  While I don't want to ever sell her either, it might be fun a few decades from now to look at her all nice and new in her box. :)

I think that its all up to the person that has the pI ponies. Yes they could be worth more down the road. Just have to give it time to see what happends to them. I like NIB ponies the most anyways. :)

Nah, debox them! I like my ponies to interact and bond together. I don't buy MIP, except new ponies, and if I did, I'd have to re-sell for them to stay that way!!

I don't buy many G4s, but when I do, I always debox them. I'm not interested in how much value they'll have ten, fifteen or twenty years from now; I'm interested in how much joy they'll give me in the present.

I take them out of the boxes, but keep the backcards and, if there is any, the very front of the boxes too. That way I'll have reference art and text for ponies later on.
The reason I take them out is mostly so I can brush and style their hair. It's fun. ^^

I only collect brushable G4's and I leave them mostly boxed. I hang them all on my wall. However if I get playsets and stuff it's usually for the ponies so I'll open it and keep the pony it came with and sell the accessories (no room for many accessories here I'm afraid).

I debox most of mine, the only exceptions being SDCC Ditzy Doo and Zecora. I keep all of my con ponies in the box and Zecora just looks so nice in hers! I have a few unboxed Raritys tacked up around my collection because I get so many as gifts, and they do look nice displayed like that. Other than those, they all come out of the box. I don't have the space for boxed ponies anyway, and I have a feeling G4s will never be as valuable as G1s, especially not the mane six.

I think the only things that really go up in value are the ones no one expected to.  Except for Mimic.
Title: Re: Keeping G4's in a box?
Post by: ButtercreamDream on March 10, 2013, 08:43:35 PM
I made that mistake with G3s.  I bought everything I could, and kept most of it MIB, until the started with the core 7 repeat characters.  Now I have way too many, no room to display them, and they are mostly worth less that I paid, even in their MIB state (which is still better value than loose, mind you).  I've been trying to sell them, but I might end up having to debox them and store them for my future kids (or my son, if he likes ponies.  I'm not pushing him either way, lol)

Still, all my single G4s are mib right now, and the playsets have been opened.  For that reason, I only buy the ones I like, and I don't worry about future value of the regular releases.  I also don't bother with doubles, weather or not they come with accessories or tinsel in their hair, unless there are new ponies with them.

So yeah, If you like them MIB for display and keeping them dust free, then go for it.  If it's for the future value, don't bother.  Most of them won't be worth much more than their shelf price.

If you prefer them boxed, keep them boxed of course.  :)

For me, however, I prefer my g4s loose.  And since there's such a flood of them in the market and I many collectors out there, I really doubt they'll ever be as rare or HTF as a MOC g1.

I hang my boxed ponies on the wall, includiing FS Luna and FS Rarity. I want SO badly to open them and play with them! I asked another member here about what I should do, and what I got out of her answer was to buy 2 of whatever pony you really like, then debox one and display the other. I thought that was a great win win- plus, since I'm only buying duplicates of a few of them and the ones that I think will appreciate in value.

I think I have some sort of OCD with keeping things in boxes, I just don't seem to appreciate them unless they're still MIB...I have a cupboard full of MIB G3 ponies and playsets, somewhere I'm fairly sure I have some G2 MIB/MOC's and now with G4's I'm keeping everything still boxed except blind bags of course lol...I did open ONE G4 and now I hugely regret it and having thoughts on buying a double that's still in box so I can display that particular series all together...

I dunno why but it's just me *shrugs*

I say debox. I did and display mine with the wedding Castle and it looks awesome. :)

Value wise in the future, I don't see it as being much difference. There are a few hard to get ponies out there that are G4s but those are the only ones I would keep in the box.

I debox mine because I like to be able to brush their hair and they look nicer to display, plus I don't have the space to display them all boxed. I do keep the International exclusives boxed though. I'm very tempted to debox them too but so far I've been strong and kept them in their boxes. Really though, I'll probably never sell them. I'll save them for my future grandchildren to play with at my house (my 5 year old daughter already has her own G4 collection, lol) or I'll just keep them for myself forever.  so resale value is not a factor for me.

I don't collect for resale purposes or the pony's value. I collect to enjoy them, and I get the most enjoyment out of opening them. Of course,  I would never debox a G1 and I love getting MOC G1s, but I will happily open up G4 items.

We are all about deboxing here.  My little 5 year old son and I love to play with them.  We take good care of them so (hopefully) they will hold their worth but playing with them is more than half the fun! :)

For the most part, all of my G4's are still in boxes. I have a few things that came to me loose, so I can't do anything about those. lol. But, I am someone who loses things easily, and it keeps everything together. That, and they stay safe from hurricane toddler. However, I did have the most fun not too long ago when I actually deboxed a G4 Rainbow Dash. I had ended up with two, so I took the opportunity to open her up. It was so strange. I hadn't opened up a pony in like 20 years. They may all get opened eventually though once all the shelves are up in the pony room. I may debox for spacial purposes.

Since it's my kids that own the majority of G4s in our house, they are deboxed.  But for myself I like to collect the FS ponies, so those remain MIB.  And I do have a few international G4s, and those too will remain MIB.

Oh this is so hard.  For the most part I try to get two of the ponies I really like or just can.  I love opening ponies but, I always feel so guilty after.  And what's the point of owning a pony I can touch or really enjoy?

I'm a deboxer.  :). I just can't keep them in packaging.  For me, half the fun is in the styling as well!

I want to buy some g1 mib but i know if i did it would torture me everyday not to open it. To me that defeats the purpose of buying one mib. The g4 will be like the g3 i think and unless it is some rare special piney it won't make much of a difference between loose and mib. Just my thoughts : )

I say let those ponies roam! It's fun to display them in ways you can't do if they're still boxed. And, personally, I don't really like how the G4 ponies' hair looks in box, so I prefer to whip out a comb and at the very least straighten their hair. I also find it nice to carry a mini-figure with me from time to time.

The packaging is part of the fun, too. What I do is after I've extracted the ponies I cut out any interesting character art I haven't seen yet and keep it with the rest (this was actually necessary to hold on to the background art for the latest G4 themed sets, since Hasbro apparently doesn't want to make the stand-up backgrounds anymore). Ponies are toys, darn it! Not to say I would open any MIB G1 I get if I ever do.

Keeping special ponies MIB and deboxing the regular ponies.
Sometimes I also keep regulars MIB as well - it's up to my mood :D

I had fun deboxing my first ponies ,all of the G4 brushables including the international releases, then I ran out of room on the display area for them, I decorated the inside of high boy (used to house a TV inside ) with the back card and the boxes art and made a little ponyville inside
I wanted to keep the FS G4 mib at first but then I  came up with the idea to get the G3 Rainbow Castle to display them and all came out even Drama Pony  :), But now I have 3 FS MIB ( Drama Pony,Pinkie and Rarity)
and then I went after the Shine Bright ponies and I liked their boxes a lot,and I had ran out of space already ,so they went to the wall on their box, and then the new CE Princess sets and mane 6  singles came out and they were pretty much repeats, so I also kept them mib and on the wall and also because they have the new blister type of packaging , the motion ponies came out and did not feel like opening them, so they joined the mib ponies on the wall too, I came across some G4 on family dollar and they were all g4's with the old packaging(cherry pie, diamond rose, sunny rays) so I felt like I wanted a second one of them to keep MIB as well
at the end I was able to gather more of them and so far I have 12 of the old packaging that were still being sold on hasbro site and some still at the stores , even a couple of the international (Star Swirl and Lily Blossom)I had  already I came across them Mib  and it was a good deal and got them .
So I still open some like the walkin talking pinkie pie ,and the Spa and Salon sets and BB's  well not all  BB's  the mini sets I kept them MIB , they look cool in their box and on the wall.
Someone wrote on here that they felt the pony was not complete without their orginal box and I kinda feel the same way...........but not all the time, some you just have to play with them like the  Design a Pony which I keep paint them with water paint and the funkos too ,they look nice both free or MIB :)
sometimes is nice to get 2 of them and the conflict is no longer there !

Some I keep in their box but most I debox. I'm not a huge fan of the packaging art; it's just not the same as G1 or G2 art.

I debox them all.  Even the SDCC pony.
I'm not collecting for future value, and there are so many people who ARE, that they aren't going to be worth much anyway.

I keep almost all my G4s in box. The only thing I have de-boxed is my Princess Luna and Princess Celestia Fashion Style set and all the blind bag ponies I get. I have my SDCC ditzy doo in box too.
