Title: My Busy Books: My Little Pony
Post by: Violet CLM on March 08, 2013, 12:56:48 AM
"My Busy Books" have licensed the MLP brand before for "Welcome to Ponyville (http://www.mlparena.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=224134.html)," which included a number of IMHO quite reasonable looking pony figures, plus several accessories. I haven't seen any other posts here about this, but now they're branching into G4 (http://www.phidal.com/en/product.php?idl=7067), and instead of including accessories, they've skipped straight to twelve pony figures. What do those figures look like?

They look absolutely incredible! Well, except for Rarity's face and Spike's proportions. But look at those! Where can you find a Rainbow Dash with better hair? And Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo have never had toys before outside of the playful pony line. Nor has Spike, I don't think? Click image for ridiculously higher resolution.

So far I've only heard of this being found in Walmart, and since the nearest Walmart's over an hour away, this is the first time I've truly been tempted to make the trip....

Must find but need to make sure the figures are nice as I have the older book and the figures are not the best condition. Which I have never played with the old book so they came in not so good condition. I will have to look the next time I am in Walmart.

Whoa... Those are GREAT! Why can't we get stuff like that here!? It's a miracle if I find ONE pony in toy stores, let alone twelve! Our economy fails...

Those Cutie Mark Crusaders are BOSS. Rarity's eyes could be better, and what's with Spike? He looks vaguely mutant.  Also those princesses are tiny. The CMCs are almost as tall as them!

Poor Spike looks like he could be a water squirt toy.

Those figures look really nice! Rarity's face is... small but heck I still want her. Twilight and RDash look especially nice.

I have a mighty need!

I think Rarity's eyes might look so crazy and small because there's no outline separating the sclera from her body colour, so it makes her eyes look too narrow. Similar to how Blossomforth's eyes can look like they're completely black, because the sclera blends right into the coat. Rarity (I assume) will look a lot better in person. Spike on the other hand... :P

I would assume books, since that's where Toys R Us had the Stuck On Stories book (which I am tired of and need to sell sometime) and this is roughly the same sort of thing? But Walmart isn't primarily a toy store, AFAIK, so... dunno. It's not like it's difficult to check multiple aisles.

Yep, all the figures come with it. The G3 version had 7 ponies and a bunch of random items (treasure chest, flower pot, wedding cake, etc.) that were not in scale with the ponies. This was during the bore 7 time, so there weren't any others they could add. I guess this time they decided to just release all ponies with it since there are many more choices, instead of a few ponies and bunch of random items.

No, but sometimes people are in a hurry or have others waiting on them and in those times it's extremely handy to know exactly where you're going. Just asked in case others who buy it at Wal-Mart see the thread and felt like answering. :)

I checked Walmart and all they had was the G3 version. They had quite a few of them, so I doubt they would stock the G4 version until those were gone. I just ordered this book from Barnes & Noble. Shipping wasn't too horrible. I can't wait to see them in person.

I looked at one of the Wal-Marts near me and all they had was 3 different ones. One was Strawberry Shortcake, one was another girl one (maybe princesses), and the last was a boy one (not sure about this one). I liked the look of Strawberry Shortcake one so I hope the MLP one was just as good.

Price is $9, shipping is $4. Hmm. Kind of tempted to get three of them to qualify for the free shipping, then try to recoup the losses by selling the figures separately (e.g. the CMC together), even though I have no experience selling things online. Y'all are probably the experts... does this sound like a remotely practical plan, or should I suck up the shipping cost/look for other books to get at the same time?

I think when something is as readily available online for $9-10 both domestically and internationally a lot of people are probably most interested in buying the book and figures themselves. Why would they then just purchase just some of the figures separately when they could purchase the book plus all the figures for $14?

Alternatively perhaps outside the collecting community and the Arena you may find buyers through ebay who will purchase just the figures from you or there could of course be members here who are interested in just certain characters.

Personally I would think it a little risky when the complete product is so easy to pick up but you never know what you could luck on to through ebay. So I would say its a gamble as it may or may not work for you.

It's weird, though that B&N has it listed as a bargain book. I thought bargain books are usually old stuff they're trying to get rid of. And then with the publishing date, it shouldn't even be out yet.

I have a gut feeling they are selling the G3 one currently- I bet the two have the same barcode and ring up the same in their system. I really hope I'm wrong, but I'll see tomorrow.
well, this is odd. I ran the ISBN # through some searches, it's definitely the product pictured. one search engine says it was published in december.

That's really strange. I ordered on the 10th and it shipped on the 11th. It's going to be here tomorrow. I certainly hope they send the correct book. I did originally think that maybe they were shipping the old version, thinking they're the same, since both are MLP, but they have different ISBN numbers so I doubt they could get them mixed up. I wonder how many orders they got for that book. Because besides being posted here, it was also posted on Equestria Daily, so I'm sure they got a lot of orders. Maybe too many people ordered it so they're delaying some orders until they get more in.

Yeah, the Spike looks really strange. Rarity does too. Her head looks bloated and her eyes look too small for her head. I'm kind of hoping mine will look better in person. I'll find out in about an hour since that's when UPS usually arrives.

Rarity might be fixable-  it might be the way they painted her eye that contributes to the creep factor...

I got mine! The book itself does have a Bargain Priced tag on it, listing it as $9.98. There are some dings in the lower corners of the book, but it's not bad. The playmat isn't what I expected. You'd think it would be a top down view of an area, but it's not. It's actually four background images, one in each corner and they just look like stills of the background used in the show. There's Sweet Apple Acres, Sugar Cube Corner, Carousel Boutique and the Library. It's pretty big. Each scene is about the size of those posters that were at Walmart awhile ago. The mat isn't plastic, it's paper, but it's glossy and it seems pretty high quality paper.

So onto the figures! They're much bigger than I thought they'd be. I had the G3 book they made and those figures were about half the size of these. The figures are about the same size as the blind bags. The molds they used to make these are much higher quality than anything Hasbro produces and because of that, these are pretty show accurate. The paint is sloppy, but so are the paint jobs on blind bags. Several of them also arrived with dirt smudges, but I've also seen that with brushables, so it's not too shocking. I took pics of them all in groups of three.

First up is Celestia, Cadence and Spike:

Celestia- First off, I think her cutie mark is on the wrong side. I think she displays better on the other side. I found the same issue with my Funko :muffin: Pony. I may just paint her cutie mark on the other side. The mold of her overall is cute, but she has a pretty messy paint job. They forgot to paint the front section of her hair that's below her crown and on her display side, they didn't paint the end of her tail.
Cadence- Her figure is really cute. She looks show-accurate (except for the wings being solid purple, but Hasbro does that as well, so I don't blame them) and her paint issues are pretty minimal. There's a weird lump in the plastic in the center of her wing on the NDS, but it doesn't bother me too much since I won't notice it on display.
Spike- Spike is definitely odd. His head looks too big and his cheeks are too puffy. He also tends to topple over. I'm not sure what's going on with the two lime green scales on the side of his head, but they're two different sizes. I'll give them credit, though, for making him stand up like he does on the show instead of putting him on all fours like Hasbro did.

The Cutie Mark Crusaders:
visitors can't see pics , please register or login
 (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/854/cmch.jpg/)
Apple Bloom- She's really cute. My only real complaint about her is they painted the backsides of her ears red. Still, nothing a little acetone can't fix. She's definitely one of my favorites of this set.
Sweetie Belle- Something about her pose is kind of awkward. I get what they were going for, but it doesn't translate well to the figure. She's kind of a light grey instead of a bright white, but it looks more accurate that way. Her horn isn't centered which kind of bugs me. She also has stray splatters of paint on her, including a pink smear on her nose, but I'll just use acetone to remove them.
Scootaloo- She's pretty accurate as far as her hairstyle and I love her tiny little wings. My figure has crooked eyes, but it's not too bad. The paint on her body is kind of uneven and bumpy in places.

Main six, part 1:
visitors can't see pics , please register or login
 (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/838/pinkietwilightdashie.jpg/)
Pinkie Pie- Like Celestia, I think they picked the wrong side to paint her cutie mark on. You can't even see her head, just her hair on the display side. Her hair looks really nicely molded and her paint isn't bad. There's a few slight paint rubs on her, at the tip of her ear, the bottom of her tail and near her hooves, but I can touch those up fairly easily.
Twilight Sparkle: She looks really nice and very show accurate. Her paint is a bit sloppy, especially the pink stripe in her tail because it looks really uneven. She also has a rub on her chest, right above her two front legs.
Rainbow Dash- I was thrilled when I saw her. After getting so many RD toys, figures, etc. with colors missing from her mane, tail or both, this one looks awesome. I also love that her eyes look like they do on the show instead of the way they look on all the toys and plushies released so far. Her paint issues aren't too bad, especially considering how many colors are used on her. I may touch up the yellow on her mane a bit since the orange bled through a bit, but overall she looks really nice.

Main six, part 2:
visitors can't see pics , please register or login
 (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/841/rarityfluttershyaj.jpg/)
Rarity- I'm not too fond of her figure. Just like Celestia and Pinkie appear to have their cutie marks on the wrong side, so does Rarity. Her tail looks oddly shaped on the display side and her hair covers her head. On her NDS, though, while her tail looks better, her head looks super strange. Her mane looks like it's too far too the right, giving the impression she is going bald and because her eye is printed so small and painted so far forward, it makes her cheeks look super swollen. Overall her paint isn't bad, she just has a few spots on her tail that are missing paint.
Fluttershy- Her mold is very well done. Since Fluttershy is my favorite main six pony, I was really hoping she'd look good and luckily she does. She only has two small issues, and that's a small paint rub on her display side mane and a bit of extra glue that appears to have oozed out when her wings were attached.
Applejack- The biggest surprise about her is that she has her freckles, and on both sides. To this day, I have not figured out why Hasbro doesn't add them to the brushables of her, but this tiny little figure of her has them. I wish she had her hat, but that's ok. She's missing a bit of orange paint on her ear and under her mane on each side, but not bad.

So overall, I definitely think this book and figures are worth buying. Even more so because they're the same size as blind bags, but you get 12 of them for what Hasbro charges for 3 (in those mini packs) and these, overall are more show accurate and in a lot of ways better quality.

Post by: Galactica on March 13, 2013, 11:47:34 AM
Wow- thanks for posting pics!

You know what's odd is that some of them have really different sized heads and designs- it seems as though entirely different people worked on different ones-  (Rarity and Fluttershy look WAY different than Rainbow Dash and Twilight)  Scoots looks REALLY different than the other two CMCs...

Unfortunately- Spike looks even weirder than I thought he might...

That's too bad about the messy paint-  but the the price is right for so many figures!
Title: Re: My Busy Books: My Little Pony
Post by: ShortyBoo on March 13, 2013, 11:57:24 AM
Yeah, I'm guessing they had multiple people creating the sculpts that were used to make the molds. I've decided that I'm going to put half of them (Celestia, Spike, Rarity and the CMCs) up for trade or sale along with the playmat. I don't have a ton of room anyway, and looking at the amount of retouching I'd have to do if I kept them all helped me with that decision.

Scoot's looks oddly misshaped... Poor Cadence's non-display wing has no feathers :P and Spike and Rarity have jawbreakers for heads, but other than that they all look okay.

Quick edit: I'm loving the show-accurate eyes on that Dash, too. Nothing against the cutesy innocent eyes Hasbro gives her, but she looks better this way.

Just opened mine, (literally squeeing in excitement when I saw it on the porch) they are so close, nearly perfect scale with the blind bags ponies! The book ones have very slightly puffier heads, but that's it. :)
Of course, the CMC fillies aren't truly in scale in either this line of figures or the minifigure sets/blind bags, since they're almost as tall as the adult ponies, unlike in the show. But these fillies are as tall as the Applebloom and Diamond Tiara that were released, and that's all we can ask for, I guess.

Cadence has such a long horn!

Why is Celestia so angry? Is it because they didn't paint all of her hair and she looks like she's wearing a horn hat? It's okay, Tia, you're still pretty!

And Pinkie must've sat on her butt for too long, because her cutie mark is sort of smushed!

Oh geez.

That Rarity. I can't handle the wonk.

Anybody got one they're willing to sell or trade?  :P I'm not too keen on buying the whole set, but that Rarity is totally calling my name in what I can only imagine is some kind of funny voice.

I'm selling mine. Send me a PM if you want her. Otherwise I'm going to add the six I'm planning to sell to my sales thread tomorrow.

Am I the only one who thinks the Rarity looks good? A little too gray, of course. Hair could be a bit bigger, I guess. But I like the size of her head, and that her eyes aren't disturbingly huge like in the show.

ShortyBoo: PM'd! :D

NoPonySpecial: I think her eyes are small, and perhaps a little too high on her face. It has an almost "uncanny valley" effect. She really does look okay otherwise!

"my busy book is an amusing storybook and inventive toy in one activity kit. Full page illustrations and a charming tale bring these lively characters to life, as your child's imagination expands with 12 toy figures and a playmat"
I just love that description XD it's on the back of the book.
