Title: Deconstructing Talking Princess Celestia? Help!
Post by: Sunshine on February 17, 2013, 07:59:57 PM
Hi all, I'm not sure if this belongs here, so mods, please feel free to move it to a more appropriate forum...

But I was looking for some help and advice on deconstructing a talking Princess Celestia doll. The hard plastic ones, most specifically, the old original pink one.

I can't seem to get to her screws out because they've been sealed with plastic plugs to cover them... I've tried to split her seams but they're super tight because of the screws.

I also have no idea how to get her head off?

I'm not worried at all about having anything like her talking mechanism work again (obviously), but I'd really like to get her apart so I can do some super fun stuff with her!!

Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks!

You will probably get better answers in the Customs forum, though I can't think off the top of my head if anyone there has done it.

This guy made some videos where he was turning his into Nightmare Moon:

I didn't watch the whole thing so I don't know if it covers exactly what you're talking about but it might be of some help! :)

I was trying to find info on this the other day and watched those youtube videos but they miss out the part of removing the screws!  Grr.
Those plugs are in so tight I can't see a way to get them out unless maybe drilling into them.

I asked about this to a person who had customized a Celestia like this and she told me that you gotta drill up the plugs to get the screws out.

Cool, looks like my plan will work :) now to find the drill...

Oh and I think you have to really soften her head to get it to come off.  I haven't tried this yet though.  I can't remember if it mentions in the video what to do.

Alright, thanks so much guys!! We had started to drill down to her screws but it was fruitless, I guess I'll break the power drill out. I don't really mind how badly I beat her up, I can fill in any mistakes after I get her apart, so even if she's full of dimples and cracks...

If I can get here apart, I'll try to post photos of the procedure? I hope I get some time to work on her tonight.
Think I'll boil some water and put her head in it as well.

I haven't had a chance to watch the video but I bookmarked it, thanks everyone again for the info, any little bit helps...

Can't wait to get drilling!! LoL

I cant wait to hear how you get on!

You may get some additional advice over in customs but the only details I have seen of someone taking one of these part thoroughly is the video tinrobo linked...hopefully that gets you started!

I've successfully removed the screws!  I got my Dad to help me drill them out. He used it very slowly and luckily chose a drill the exact size to let the screw out easily.  He used a much smaller one to start off the two slanted ones and drilled straight into the body before moving to the angle of the plug.  The screws are straight in and you need a long thin philips head screwdriver to get them out.  Two are longer than the others.  Also a good idea to remove the batteries or she very embarrassingly tells your father "You're Beautiful!" :D
I've not done a G4 head before so I guess her head is the same as them and I might need to get out the exacto knife.  I've not split the seam all the way around but I don't think I'd have to. I just need to get to the tail to replace it and the head will be seperate anyway.

From the youtube video it looks like he's cut the neck around one of the screw holes to get her completely apart but again if you're just customising it shouldn't be necessary.

Alatariel-Silimaure made a talking Celestia into her OC.
Hopefully she'll pop along with any tips :)

I sure am! She's not done yet, but progress is being made. And Galactica, she won't be sold until you can get there LOL

I've also made some progress... we went hard and decided just to drill the screws out completely. I've got her split open on the backside and removed her tail. The next step is getting her head off. I'm going to watch the video which I haven't gotten through all of it yet, and see if I can't get the chest area open.

I wasn't so worried about having giant holes in her body, I figure I'm gluing her back together, I won't be using the screws again... but at least next time I know if we did it a bit slower, we can get the screws out...

Interesting pony though. I hope she's worth the trouble once I get her all apart, lol!

If you've already gotten her tail out, there's no need to disassemble her further. The head pops off like on other G4s.

I've never taken a head off of a G4 before... lol so I have no idea how to do it...

Just pull it. Heating it a bit might help, but I just pulled mine off.

Seriously? Mine won't budge, lol I'm gonna dunk her in some hot water and try again. LoL - maybe I'm a weakling

When I want to soften doll heads for removal (I know that sounds terrible) I pop them under a heating pad (or heated blanket).  Should work for ponies...  I now know that you can boil ponies to loosen their heads- although I've never tried.

You must be really lucky with yours! Mine seems glued onto the plug! I can get to some of the plug having made a hole in the glue but I need to find an exacto to get the rest off.  It won't pull off heated or not.

Glued on? Does it not turn? I have an extra here, let me check that one.
ETA: Oh, I see how you mean with glued. Yeah, I just pulled my second one off. I held the body between my knees, and kind of bent off the head by gabbing under her chin or horn and pushing.

it turns but the plug turns too? I've not done a G4 head before though so I might not be able to see what's going on.  Waaa! I don't like doing new things :(  I don't have a bait G4 to try either :(

edit - That's how I try to do it too.

Yeah, the plug turns on these. They're not quite like the G4s, these are glued to the plug, where a G4 is not.

Yay! Finally! Couldn't find my knife but used a needle tool to pry and break at the plastic - it was glued 3/4 of the way around! no wonder I had problems!

About the tail... I've only got a bit of a gap at the rear end and I can't see how the tail is attached.

Her tail has a plastic plug at the end... it is it's own piece and should come out easily once you get her split open enough, mine popped out easily. I haven't attempted taking off her head yet... meh.

Here's my progress so far. She needs some more sanding and smoothing, then she'll be ready for the airbrush.

Super cool!

I have to admit I stopped working on mine. I started pulling her head off (well not me, my fiance, I wasn't strong enough), but I have to cut it from the base.

Can you give any advice about removing the wings? I've tried, haven't cut the fabric off of them yet but, obviously will do that... but then what?

I cut the wings off with my oscillating tool. The leftovers were quickly destroyed with my dremel and drill.
