Title: The hunt for caterine and the scalpers in my town :(
Post by: Novavelle on February 11, 2013, 08:19:52 PM
I've checked every walmart in town, even some out of town and I cannot find her, and what really irritates the heck out of me is that a person that we (a friend and I) have found to be a scalper that lives in our town, has about 10 of them listed on ebay... so either some stores haven't gotten any, or this idiot has managed to snag them all... I cant stand people sometimes.

Ugh, what a jerk...After finding mine, I haven't seen anymore ever since, but if you'd like, I can try looking for one for you! (Unless someone else here has one at their disposal ready to help you!)

Scalpers are horrible!!  I went by the Walmart I found mine in and they still have 2 left.....at least they did yesterday.  I didn't look very closely at them so don't know how good of shape they're in but I can pick one up for you if you'd like.

I don't have an easily accessible Walmart... mejohnson posted about having extras and me an Wrenn jumped on the chance, because otherwise we might never SEE one, let alone get one. Sometimes I swear people are just awful. I'd never manage to scalp 10 of a doll, unless it was 2 at a time from different stores... and even then, I'd never have the money spare!

Who ARE these people o.o

Good luck finding one, hon!

We don't have any Walmarts in NYC. So the only way for me to get Catrine is on ebay. Waiting for the perfect price. I guess in a week we'll be able to buy a doll for 20+shipping.

That happened to me. Bergamot let me know they were in the Walmart near her. My mom was heading up that way the next day and stopped in only to find a lady with the last four in her cart:(

I hope it was a one time thing as we normally don't have this problem (usually it's getting the item in in the first place! )

Dont give in to ebay! There are quite a few members here who are finding her and are willing to resell cheaper than ebay here, or trade, or even sell at cost. Just check out the sales section :)

I even get annoyed when I see posts from members here proudly stating that they bought ALL the dolls. Don't do that. It's a butt move. Even if you're selling at retail it still knocks everyone in your area out of accessible dolls, and then they turn to eBay and support scalpers. I'm still seeing Catrine regularly on the shelves here. I think she'll be all over the shelves as soon as this crazy doll hoarding stops.  I hope you get her, Nova.

Bleh. I checked my Walmart to see if they had one for you. They did have one, but she was so messed up that even the scalpers here didn't buy her :( Scuffed mouth and nose and fuzzy eyes.

well I am guilty of picking up lots of extras, but I always offer them here... but this person has them marked up on ebay... that's not cool... And my friend needs one too so I'm trying to find them reasonable for both of us. It just ticks me off..

And I'm in the central valley

If it makes you feel better, I've been going to at least one walmart  (but up to 3 or 4) a day for almost three weeks now since she was first sited.  And I'm pretty sure I don't have any scalpers to compete with!

Darned exclusives.  I'd give up, except I have two other people I'm trying to find her for who don't have walmarts near them >.<

I know that for Target- it helps to go first thing in the morning when they first open- (I've decided that the scalpers in my area get there between 7:40-8 a.m.)

... but isn't Walmart open 24/7?   I guess it might be helpful to know when your Walmart generally does the stocking.

I will grab an extra of something rare if I see it for my sister or someone on the board if they want it- but I've never grabbed the entire row of dolls- which is what the scalper in my area does...

Well, why not? I picked up all 6 Catrines from my Walmart and sent them to friends on here and to friends and family overseas. Are you saying I should leave some just to be nice to strangers, while my friends don't get any?

Nova I've seen plenty here! There were none at the Walmart near my house this evening, but I'm going to a different one near work tomorrow at lunch. If they have any, I'll grab one for you, no problem. After all, you've helped me get several of my dolls!!

I for one am very grateful Karin that you've helped me out with hard to find dolls!

I see nothing wrong with helping out your friends or family and do not think it is a "butt" move.  I'd certainly rather help out my friends than the scalper that will get there 15 minutes later.

I ended up getting her from a friend for my birthday.

hopefully you will find her soon. I find that once the "new" wears off, they show up a lot more

Plenty here.  There was a period of time where it seemed everyone was getting them and we started getting nervous that someone must have gotten ours, but since discovering them there have been 3 - 6 on the shelf at any time at every Walmart we have access to.  Patience.  There really are plenty.  Moreover, the ebayers are saturating the market.  It will not be long before even they are forced to lower their prices or eat the cost.  Experienced all this the hard way multiple times with Monster High and Transformers figures.  Just as soon as you give up (or spend more than is wise) they'll be everywhere.

I thought that about Gil- but it turns out he really was gone forever.  Then I heard he was being re-released- but never saw him during that release either...

I guess that's the fear-  the one time you don't go out of your way to get a doll will be the one time that there won't in fact be enough...

I feel that I have no scalpers in my area. I live out in in what would be the boonies to some. All three of the Wal-Marts nearby have always had the sought after current dolls with plenty left on the shelves. I've found plenty of Catrines at two of my local Wal-Marts. I noticed that it's when I get close to the city of St. Louis that it's harder to find things. I see people on Craigslist trying to sell the werecat 3 pack for $80 or Catrine for $40. I guess all the scalpers live there.

well I rarely shop at walmart as it is (can't stand the place) cause around here they are always thrashed and the people that work there generally haven't been that helpful for me.... plus I work from 8-5 so I can't be at the store when they open, I just wanted to vent, I'll keep looking.

It's the same here in Indiana though, I can find most of the dolls, but "rare or Exclusives" go off the shelves like crazy, I've only seen one Scaris Deuce in store and he's not been spotted since, and rollermaze Clawdeen is nowhere to be found but I see Abbey everywhere. I am not going to pay $100 for a $13 doll.....that's ridiculous!

i found mine after they brought out the pallets. about 1 am. my friend said when she stopped by at 5am the box was still on the pallet.

i'm kinda a brash person. so i just asked them to take some out for me to look through. and put the box back when i was done. could have bought them all, but wasn't even sure i wanted the one at the time. all gone now though.
in a few more weeks the shelves will be flooded with them.

I think you have the nail on the head there :p. I almost never see ANYTHING shelf warm here.

One week I went to tru on a Tuesday there were something like 25 Robecca's I went back on Friday 0.

There has to be either some insane scalping here or the dolls are super crazy extra popular.

Sigh, same deal in SoCal! I went to my local Walmart today - two Scaris dolls, total. Although that may just be my Walmart's terrible, terrible setup, they've never had a very big display, except maybe right after Christmas.

I live in a small town, that usually gets things rather late, but I can always find the harder - sought after dolls in my stores (Walmart or Target only). I've found two extra Deuce in my stores (both are traded already), but sadly no one is buying the other Scaris dolls so they aren't restocking them lol. Dolls don't sell extremely well in my area, but if anyone needs any I'm always willing to help.

I agree that buying the lot of them isn't a "butt" move if you are helping out family/friends. I'd do in a heartbeat as well as I can't stand the scalpers (although I have none here in my town I don't think anyway) it drives me crazy seeing the ebay prices sometimes lol

I don't have a scalper problem in my town... it's the other moms and collectors! I run into collectors all the time. We are all after the same thing and there's not many to go around.

Aside from that... $40 with free shipping on ebay for Catrine really isn't that bad. I sat and broke the fees/costs down while I was contemplating buying one...

$19.97 doll
  $1.20 tax 6%
$21.17 total for doll
$ 2.33 ebay fixed price fee 11% of $40.00
$ 1.46 paypal fee 2.9% + 30 cents on $40.00
$ 9.88 online priority shipping of 1lb 3 oz from CA to MD
$34.84 total

So $5.16 profit for the seller. Not too bad.

I work for the toy department at our local walmart, and at least for our store in Oregon we are having issues with getting anything toy-wise in stock. Our MLP section has been more or less bare since Christmas (though we did get the Fluttershy plushies in sometime on Tuesday or Wed.). So that could be the reason for the lack of Catrine. Our warehouses are out.

Also (at least my store) the DC and Scaris budget dolls just went on Rollback for $10.

I may have found out the reason for almost NO MH dolls in my area.

I went to TRU today, found the shelves absolutely BARREN. Two Scaris dolls, and not much else. So I go up to the customer service rep, and ask if they have any three-pack dolls (the Fearleading set with the Werecat trio) in the back, since a lack of dolls might mean they are in the middle of restocking. He immediately asks, "Oh, the Werecats? Yeah, a lady came in here, I guess it's a 'club' or something, she just bought them all. Try again when we get another shipment."

Yeah. So I guess scalpers are now calling themselves "clubs" or something. It may be what happened to all of the Catrines in my area, too; maybe something similar is happening in other parts of the state? Mega frustrating!!

My mom is going there tomorrow to see about another for a friend I didn't think was interested, so if anyone needs help getting one, gimme a shout!

A foolish noob question, but what exactly is a scalper? Are they people who buy collectibles in bulk for market prices and then sell really expensively on ebay? Or is anybody who sells something collectible for a high price a scalper?
Title: Re: The hunt for caterine and the scalpers in my town :(
Post by: Maniah on February 16, 2013, 04:24:02 AM
A scalper is someone who goes into the store, buys every single item on the shelf, then resells at a higher price with the goal of turning a profit. It can be  a pretty heated topic.

good news is, due to generous members here I found the 2 I need, sadly I still can't find any in my town, I thought maybe it was due to walmart not restocking, but I've seen new dolls every time I got in there so clearly they're restocking something (not ponies though) But either way, thank's for all the help everyone.
