Title: Hi! I'm new!
Post by: scaradango on February 04, 2013, 03:29:20 PM
Hi! I'm a 22-year-old archaeology graduate student and research assistant at the Field Museum in Chicago. I'm not ashamed to admit I'm a total nerd; Star Trek and Star Wars (and science fiction in general) are some of my favorite things. Outside of media fandoms, I enjoy playing the flute and piano, reading, birding, hiking, and messing about with my pet finches.

I never really collected ponies until Friendship is Magic came out- which is when I discovered the collecting community, and I found it super-fascinating! The suggestions post said maybe I should tell you a little bit about my collection. Right now, it's entirely G4s, with the exception of a pair of McDonalds G3 ponies I found in our basement and painted. I've got a pretty decent collection of G4 brushables and blind bags and am looking into picking up some of the older ponies. I recently took a gamble and bought an auction lot of G1s which should be here soon. I'm looking forward to cleaning them up and making them look all nice and new.

I also really like the customization scene and am always in awe of the artists who turn a bait pony into a one-of-a-kind sculpture. I'm looking forward to seeing everybody's collections and talking about the neatness that is collecting ponies!

Ooh! What's she seen? I've learned that Chicago is amazing for winter raptors, and in the fall we had some of the most amazing migrants coming through. Send her my way if she ever wants to chat about birds! :D

We have a pond we walk past on our daily, this year we have been treated to folks of American Widgeon, who had two pairs of European Widgeon mixed in, Green Winged Teals, along with Pintails (still here), and a pair of Gadwalls (still here), oh and some Piebilled Gerbes.  The Widgeon's seemed to moved on, on us but now we have Ringbills, Rudy Ducks, Shovlers and sometimes a silly Bufflehead.  We also spotted some Scaups, immature Double Crested Commarant and we have a Great Blue Heron who lives around here year round.  We see him at least once a week.  We have seen a female Kestrel with her kill the other week and today we surprised the male of the pair which was cool.  Oh and we have had a Copper Hawk visiting our yard to come find some plump Morning Dove for dinner.

Sorry did not mean to ramble on, on you.

I am a Star Wars fan too and collect some of the action figures.  When I was younger, my brother's SW figures used to ride my ponies into battle, lol.  :)

My own Star Wars (and a couple of Trek) figures may or may not be seated on ponies right now...

Seriously, Nightmare Moon was made to be Darth Vader's warhorse!

Also, now that I can post more, hotdang, Diamond! Those are some great birds. It's so cool that you've gotten to see a pair of kestrels. They're such cute little falcons! And your waterfowl sound awesome. Cormorants are fun birds, and it was actually tracking grebes at field school that got me into birding! If you get a chance to watch them in the summer, they do this super cute courting dance with their necks. They're so cute.
