Title: Should I start collecting G4?
Post by: mylittleponylover92 on January 29, 2013, 03:14:50 PM
So I've been interested in ponies since I could remember and been collecting again after a break and mainly interested in G1s to G3s. Mainly, building up my classic G1 collection and then getting lots of cute G3s (since I stopped collecting in 2004 for a few years)

It was a shock to me when I first came back to a world that sold ponies and saw how MLP had changed! They were quite hard to get used to and I thought they looked quite ugly....(dont take this personally or anything just wasn't used to the new cartoon style).

However, I know FiM has brought a whole new wave of pony fans and lots of people would defend it to the death! So it must be pretty good! So I shouldn't be so critical and give all the new ponies a chance I guess.

I do have a blind bag Rainbow Dash. As well as the rainbow crystal empire collection since they are really pretty! I've always loved Applejack & Pinkie Pie so it cant be bad...

So do you think I should give the actual toys a go? Would I regret not getting some?

I must say the wedding castle is growing on me! I have the G3 celebration castle only at the moment! I should probably try watching the show too?

Any opinions and info about G4s would be appreciated! :)

I felt the same way when the G4 ponies came out. I would stop and take a look at them when I was in the store. But I thought they were to small and looked like deer. I passed on them all threw 2010, 2011 and half of 2012. Then I took the plunge and bought some. And guess what I am hooked!!!! I still think they are a little funny looking, But I really have grown to love them all :) I now have over 70 G4 ponies and still growing.

I would say give them a try, if you do not like in the long run you can always sell them.   :)

I say give it a shot

G4 are easy to come by the normal brushables are anyway. I wasn't big into them until I started watching the show. Now I have a nice little spot in a cabinet for them. They're smaller than any other gen so they don't take up much room.

The only major problem you might run into with G4s are the body to head discoloration but it's really only noticeable on the purple or reddish colored ponies ( Like Twilight Sparkle and Feathermay)

I felt the same way and then I watched the show and fell completely in love with the characters and animation style...and now I can't stop buying the g4 toys!

You could always start with some of the smaller items and playsets if you're uncertain :)

I was the other way around! I started on G4 and went on to G1 and G3!  I think the main problem with G4 is the lack of variety in poses.  With the G1's there were a number of different poses for earth ponies, unicorns and pegasi. Then you had the different babies, boys and sea ponies, sea pony babies and so on.  Then the G3's had all kinds of poses, not so much in the way of boys or sea ponies, but so many colours etc!!

(*cannot really comment on G2's since I don't collect those*)

I would go for it, you could have a whole generation MIB which is (lets face it) rather difficult on the previous generations

I actually like the way G4 ponies look the best, but as far as quality goes I don't think they live up to their predecessors. Like others have said, they are easy to come by and don't take up a lot of room (at least not the standard size ones), so if you want to give them a shot you won't have much to lose.

I say go for it!!!!  I only started out with the Fashion Styles and prototypes at first.  But then the brushables and blind bags crept in.

I sorta like the thrill of being able to go to an actually store and purchase them.  Especially after years and years of ebaying.

I watched the show and it got me hooked on G4s ;)

Aw thanks pony people! <3 :D

Yeah I must say it would be nice to actually buy one from a shop!! Since eBay is where I have to get most of mine. I have been looking online at some and they aren't too unreasonable! Would love to have some MIB...although I always get tempted to take them out!

I definitely will get more blind bags when I can as they are so cute and easy to transport (since I will be moving yet again by 2014)! I like the idea of them not taking up too much space since im in a studio apartment at the moment and I have to leave a lot of ponies at my childhood home which is far away! :(

Im getting more used to how they look and I think I'll start finding ways to watch the show! I agree with the poses you're exactly right! Maybe one day there will be some more variation :)

Are the playsets quite good quality? Any recommendations on which ponies I should think of buying first? :)

Obviously it's a matter of preference but I would personally advise against it. The quality control on them is attrocious so in adition to them being really low in quality in general, many of them have some issues right from the box. Also, they tend to be pricey in Europe.

But I'm saying this from a perspective of someone who doesn't like the G4 style. I decided to get one for myself, but it hasn't warmed me up to them, quite the contrary, I felt they were quite cheap compared to G1 and G3. Then again I also really didn't like the show for various reasons so maybe i'm just a general party pooper :P

Yeah, try it! I personally do not like the G4 brushable toys, but I do still have a few (the princesses, Zecora, a few like that.) They're cute, but if you hate head-body mismatch, you'll be disappointed.
And as much as I adore the cartoon, I don't care for the style of the faces. Ponies are supposed to have big nose, dangit! So I agree with your initial thought that they are ugly. It just doesn't translate well to toys, IMO.

I'd suggest watching a couple of episodes of the show (if you haven't already) and then maybe buy a pony or two and see what you think. MIT is certainly nice to still be able to buy them in store though I'm starting to get tired of seeing the same 6 ponies over and over again.  :)

I also thought the G4s looked like deer at first, but that was part of the charm for me. I think deer are cute animals.

I didn't like the G4 ponies at first either-   I totally thought they looked like deer too!   Cute but not ponies.

I actually was attracted to AJ since she had her correct colors- but not enough to buy the set that I saw...

Then I watched the FiM show on Youtube (now on netflix)  - I really liked it and suddenly loved all the toys :D

Now I like G4s better than G3s (although G1s will always be my favorites)

Collect what you like, just because others like them does not mean you have too.

While the show is cute, the toys leave me cold.  I do like the blind bags since the modeled manes hide that huge head, but that is about it for me and my daughter.

I say go for it of course - personally I find them adorable! I wouldn't collect them just for the sake of doing so however or because they are what everyone is talking about right now but because I genuinely like them :)

At $5 for the basic singles, if I was you I would pick a couple of them up - get them out on display and see if they make you happy. If you adore them then that's you hooked and a whole world of G4 to add to your G1 and G3 collections but if you are not fussed then at least you gave them a shot!

I am happy to hear that I am not the only one that thought that. They grew on me though. :)

Oh, they do! I've actually seen some cute customs of them as deer and they're kind of the perfect base for them (I'm sure people here have seen them - I'm still pretty new to MLP in general so not familiar with any custom artists or anything. Either way, they're adorable).

Thanks for the good advice, I agree that I dont think they are as high quality as their predecessors. Pretty shocking really, young girls of today deserve good ponies like I did...although G2 never really caught on in the US. But they were so easy for my mum to buy me from the local shop cos it was the only thing Id want for my birthdays lol :)

I also thought the G4s looked like deer at first, but that was part of the charm for me. I think deer are cute animals.

You're so right they do look like deer as many people have said! But I do love Bambi lol.

But I think I might have a go while they are still around...see if I like a basic one. I'm going to watch a few episodes of the show first though! I've been looking at some prices out of interest and the only single pony that you can get for cheap is Pinkie pie but then for the money i might as well get one with more accessorises for the difference in the UK. Think I can pick one up from a supermarket here for £5 which is okay for a playful pony I think...could always sell if i dont get any joy!

Don't worry I'm not deciding to collect them to be "popular" or anything like that! Although its a very good point and I value that insight! Its more just adding to my enjoyment I get from MLP. Everyone talking about them has sparked my interest into thinking maybe Im missing out on some fun!

And to be honest I've been quite down lately since my degree is really stepping up, I never see any sunshine in this country (i sometimes miss having lived in a lovely sunny country 2 years ago), my boyfriend is very busy and my family live 3,000 miles away....so I was thinking they might distract me and cheer me up...

Going to try the tv eps first and make my decision...I actually have money at the moment from being a sensible student!

Might ask my parents to bring back my macdonalds G4s I managed to collect whilst abroad and see if they help....was upset I never got to collect Pinkie out of the set though! I should try and give them a chance like people have said here...the poor deers :P

I've started small....was pleasantly surprised (since I really struggled to decode the codes on the back to get the right one)! However they were easier than the others!

(Sorry for the pink tinge to the pics...its from my fairy lights above my desk!)

They are so cute! I think I might get more of the blue bags instead of the other colours since I did pick up some purple ones...I cant decode them though since I think the codes are different to how they are in the US!

Im happier already! :)

Thank you :D they are so cute! Quite surprised at how many waves were available in the Morrisons near me! Will probably have a look in the Tesco Extra at the weekend and see :)

Addicted already...love the glittery ones but I hope the glitter doesnt wear off!

I personally only sort of like the blind bags, but to me they aren't even ponies, only a cheap chibi like gimmick that will never come close to its predecessors.  I'm in the process of selling a small lot that I tried to give a go....bleh I don't know why everyone is so hyped over these imposters lol

I didn't like the G4 line at first, but after watching the show I had to get a Pinkie Pie! Then I started looking for G4 ponies that reminded me of my favorite G1, like Feathermay reminds me of Tickle. The I got Lyra Heartstrings 'cause I love green ponies, and well... before I knew it I'd picked up quite a few! G1's are still my favorites, but the G4's have found a place on my pony shelves, too.

I was adamant that I wouldn't start collecting G4, like you I thought they looked odd compared to the G1s I was used to.
Then my dad (of all people!) bought me one randomly at the end of October last year and I now have loads!
They are cute and addictive  :)

I say you should collect what appeals to you. If you don't particularly like how G4 ponies look, there isn't much sense in collecting them! Maybe wait until you find one second hand, clean her up if needed, and see how you like her. If you get the urge to buy her a "friend", go for it. If not, oh well. You can always start collecting later if they do grow on you.

As for the show, I do recommend giving it a try, personally. I honestly don't think it's the greatest kids show EVER, but it is certainly on a different level than most current shows targeted at kids. It's fun and cute and quite well done. Watch the first episodes and a few random ones and see how they make you feel.

Give them a chance. If you don't like you can always sell them.

At 1st I didn't liked G2s, G3s or G4s :P But with time I begun to love them. And also, collecting is fun :P the more things you have to trade, hunt, talk about, more fun you may have ^^

Now, totally off topic, I love your avatar, mylittleponylover92. Princess Tiffany is one of my favs and also was a childhood pony. She is so cute ^^

Aw I know right? She's so cute! I'm lucky to have one myself I think she was even bought all the way from the USA since she was in great condition! She deffo one of my faves too :) I love her little bushwoolie friend too! Still need to collect him though! And the correct princess hat...but it's going to be hard!

I say buy one and see how you feel about her being on the shelf. Maybe you can luck out and find one at a thrift store. Unfortunately none of us can tell you if you will regret not collecting G4. Luckily though, if you decide that you wish you had gotten them.....you still can. There will always be thrift stores, yard sales, ebay, and here. ;)

Thanks that right yeah :) I think I'll get one and see how it goes! It would be nice to have more mib ones! Since I do have a couple of G3s like that! Think I'll try to get the main ones if I like the first one I get...while they are still easy to get hold of. The blind bags are a gentle start for me though!

Thats great! Super cute :)

Thank you Hathorcat :)
