Title: Is hair conditioner 100% safe on pony hair?
Post by: Falconaitae on January 11, 2013, 01:40:32 AM
This weekend I want to try some hair styling with my Lemon Drop, and before that, I would like to wash her hair. But I would just kill myself (not literally ;) ) if human chemicals (namely hair conditioner) would cause loose of color, or other nasty things.
So question for those, who tried: is it 100% safe?

I've never heard of pony hair getting destroyed by conditioner and it never happened to me (have washed 30-40 ponies at least).

But I have thought about it too. I usually stick to a mild conditioner. I don't spend money on special conditioner on my ponies, but I do avoid the cheapest brands.

Well 30-40 is quite enough to be more or less sure ^^ Thank you :)

I agree. Washed so many ponyhair over the years and never destroyed one. And I don't buy special things for my ponys, just using the things I have at home.

I've been using different types of conditioner on literally hundreds of my ponies hair for years 'n' years and I've never had any problems ;) I even use spray on leave in conditioner and its absolutely fine.  The thing that is bad for pony hair is hairspray or stuff similar to that,
The only other thing you really need to worry about with pony hair is making sure the pony is dry properly  afterwards since water left inside the pony can cause tail rust. :awake:

Every time I've ever used conditioner on a pony's hair it's worked wonders, I would say that it's fine as long as you make sure you wash all of it out :)

I have used it for years and never had a problem.  I would not recommend leaving it in the hair as there are no guarantees what might happen long-term.  But, have fun with it otherwise!  It works great on many ponies.

I agree that there is nothing to worry about. I sometimes even leave the conditioner for hours when the hair is very frizzy and it makes it extra soft :) I also just use the shampoo and conditioner that I have for myself.
Good luck with your Lemon Drop, I'm sure she'll turn out gorgeous!

i must admit, i did by special conditioner just for ponies - only cause i tend to go thru alot with them and no way was i using my expensive stuff on them lol!! i also leave it on for a while, sometimes even overnight depending on the state of the hair, but definitely make sure it's washed out properly, otherwise the hair feels oily and sort of chunky? - kind of like our own hair :)

as far as i know I've never had problems with it.. i usually use a slolution of about 1-5 parts water to conditioner... comb it through gently and let it dry.. then spritz it with water and comb out the residue and then style and let dry.
it works wonders on my g1's and tames my g4's right down( lets face it some of them have REALLY wild hair when you get them outta the box)
hope this helps!

Hmm I was kind of curious, too. I do use conditioner mostly to detangle and soften and then wash it all out.

But sometimes on places like ebay I see some pretty goopy/greasy looking hair. Looks like some ponies got a little over-conditioned. I am assuming you could just wash their hair with dish soap or clean it up if they are greasy?

I have used it for years on more ponies than I can count and havent had a problem :) And I leave it in over night sometimes. So as with everyone above I am sure you ll be fine.

The greasy thing is probably it not washed out properly. Shampoo/conditioner/soap are much more stubborn to get out of pony hair than human hair so it has to be washed very well as we all know, I think unfortunately thats not done properly by some ebay sellers.

I use as little conditioner as possible because I am so impatient and have been known to not rinse it all out sometimes.  So I have to go back the next day and re-rinse which is a pain so now I am extra careful to rinse it all so the hair doesn't turn 'hard'.

I buy (cheap) shampoo and conditioner specifically for my ponies, too! Vo5 smells great and usually costs a dollar or less.

I can't imagine conditioner that would be safe for humans but not for plastic pony hair. My preferred brand is Tresseme, but you could probably go for cheap stuff just fine. :)
