Title: Has anyone coloured in their Gen 4 Design-a-Pony?
Post by: Rhubarbpie on December 31, 2012, 02:41:19 PM: I have bought the Fluttershy one in the January sales and was wondering if anyone has coloured theirs in yet? can we use other pens to colour them in? If so what sort?? Just very curious!!

The white plastic feels a bit rougher than the normal vinyl, so it might be more cooperative to paint. I have some coupons in the mail from a Kellogg's offer, and as soon as they get here I'm getting one to turn into a Wonderbolt Dashie!

If and when I have enough money for another pair however, I'm going to use magic markers to color them in, not the provided pens.

I haz a picture! I really wish there were more colours, because it's buggin' me that they didn't provide us with a yellow marker to colour those wings of hers. I may take off the "marker" job, and re-start with acrylic paint or something.

- I painted mine too- I started out removing the black stuff using nail polish remover- with some better advice- got the rest off way more easily with acetone- then pained with acrylics.

I didn't think pen would turn out the way I wanted it to...

They're 15-ish dollars at Target. Not sure about anywhere else.

Didn't feel like going all the way to the craft store so I just picked up some cheap-o pink and yellow paint at Wal-Mart.

Also, I kept getting stray paint marks on her face. o.x Here's to hoping the tail comes out a lot better. xD

To remove the markings:

Nail polish remover and a few dozen q-tips
*tip be gentle in the beginning. Otherwise you will smear the black lines and just have a mess. You can be harder once the lines have faded and you have gotten the top layer off

Used acrylics:

Water down for a smooth coat

Wings
Delta Ceramcoat Opaque yellow
Apple Barrel white

Hair:
Delta Ceramcoat Bright Red (also transparent)
Apple Barrel white
I also mixed in a little Apple Barrel Crimson

Sealer:

Delta Ceramcoat All purpose Sealer

I know right?? I have had mine for a couple of weeks now and every time I walk past her I get twitchy fingers!! This looks awesome!!! Really good job HawaiianRain :jealous: I am jelly of your painting skills!!

I figure Fluttershy is easier because I'll only need to mix 2 colors and if she turns out well I'll get Rainbow Dash.

I would have been more excited about them if they were more re-use friendly. Like Doodle Bears or that doll that comes with the Pictionary Man game. I wonder what would happen if you used dry-erase paint on a plain white pony- would it magically become a dry erase pony? I think I might try this!

The ones you guys have colored are really cool- I like the black in Fluttershy's mane. It makes her look just a little bit tougher.

Post by: HoustonCollector72 on February 03, 2013, 10:30:07 AM: I bought washable paint (10 different colors)and brushes:) and had a try run , it is hard to paint them and it is a first time deal for me , they look nice painted but some areas after drying are peeling :( so will wash them and have a second try :)

yes I like that rope material, I kept a lot of it from many different packages and made a long string with it for my plants to use as a guide and climb over the fence :)
i hate to trash stuff that can be reused :)

I still might touch up a few small things and I'm still deciding if I want to spray the painted areas with a matte sealer but I'm mostly happy with how she turned out ^^ I think I might try a Rainbow Dash now if I can still find one.
So we've got a few people who have colored their Fluttershy's now, no one has done a RD yet?

I like these better than the Funko ponies. I'm still split on Funko since they are going to have some ponies like Drama Pony and Dr. Whooves.

I would love to buy a bunch of these and customize them but gah... at $15 a pop I can't justify that just yet. I can't even bring myself to shell out $30 for two RD's... one to keep in box and one to attempt to paint.

It looks like the finished result will be really similar to the Funko vinyl sets that are appearing, so that is keeping me from reaching into my wallet and shelling out to buy them lol. I will pick up at least one RD eventually, for my Dash collection, but dunno if I will leave it boxed or take it out to paint!

There were only four or five of them. Anyway I grabbef R.D because she is just way too cute. I love how she feels all smooth. I was thinking if i coloured her that I would get a bunch of sharpies becsuse they are permanent and have so many colours to choose from. I love hoe she looks naked as well so was super excited to learn I could get those ugly black marks off of her.

Maybe would've turned out better if there wasn't glue on part of the the areas to colour in- the marker would show differently on gluey areas than on the rest, resulting in weird patches. -_- (One of which can be seen in the third photo.)
Other markers didn't work well on the pony, but did work on the stickers. ^^
Yeah, I'm thinking next time I'll paint. It was fun and I'm proud of it but the painted versions look better.

The plastic is really really hard- they are making all 6 of the mane characters eventually (together with surprise characters)- might be easier to wait until they make AppleJack rather than trying to get those darn wings off..

The more I look at the Princess Luna model that is coming out the more I think I might attempt to paint her whole body if I get her. Her coloring looks so off.
