What was the first pony you had that drove you into collecting?
I remember vaguely that I used to own a pink pony with a strawberry cutie mark back when i was a little girl... I don't know if she was a fakie or not, but she helped me feel better when I was younger and my family was changing drastically around me. I left her at my dad's house once, and he ended up tossing it. He was too busy raising his new family to even consider his older family, and he didn't think to see that it was his only girl's favourite toy. but i digress.
The first ponies I bought on my own were in November 2012, and they were the G4 Wedding Invitation Fluttershy and the G4 Wedding Invitation Rarity. What were yours? please share! (photos from Strawberryreef.com... Since I have a sucky camera)

Ponies did not exist when I was growing up, Thoth's first ponies turned out to be real MLP but at the time we thought they where knock offs. They where G2's my sister the great shopper had found MOC in a store. Her first G3's where the Mom and baby Long Hair Bonus sets, her first G1 was one we found at a antique shop - Peppermint Crunch who we still have. The Long Hairs have been upgraded since her old ones the manes got rather wild on from play.

Sorry to hear about your first pony, that is really sad :(
When I was little I owned a bunch of ponies that had once belonged to my cousin. I didn't know any of their real names so my favourite pony was dubbed Max (because I thought it was the most male looking of all the ponies and I needed a prince for my princess).
When I was ten my cousin had a daughter of her own so I gave the ponies back to her for my little cousin. I missed my ponies because all the rest of my toys I had kept in the attic (and still have) but I especially missed my lovely Max.
I got older and still I occasionally thought of my ponies but when I was about sixteen I had a dream that I found and rescued Max from a watermill (yeah, I have some crazy dreams, that is fairly tame!). Weirdly, though I couldn't remember Max's cutiemark, only his colour, the dream helped me remember what his cutie mark was, it was fuzzy, but it looked like rings.
Again I forgot for a few years, then, at 19 I decided to look in earnest to find out exactly who Max was. I typed his description into google, orange pony with rings, but nothing came up. I couldn't even remember if he was earth, pegasus or unicorn which didn't help the search. Disheartened I gave up again.
Then, december last year I decided to try something else. I asked some online friends if they could think what the pony could be. None of them knew, but some gave me the link for a MLP identifier. After a few tries I finally had my answer.
My beloved Max was in fact Gypsy. Overjoyed I went to ebay and found a Gypsy, mint condition buyitnow. So, I did. She arrived and I instantly knew it was the same pony I had years ago. Gypsy has since lived at the side of my bed. And of course, she was lonely... And now I have about 60

My first pony that I remember getting was a baby Blossom who was from Santa (I mean he actually woke me up when I was 4 or 5 years old one xmas night) and also got the Nursery too, but Baby Blossom I will always hold as my first proper pony

I had some G3s when I was little as well as a G2 McPony but having them when I was little is not what drove me into collecting. Like many other new collectors, G4 got me into collecting. I'm a huge fan of the show and I consider myself a Brony. I was at Target one day and I saw the little G4 ponies and I decided that I wanted to get my own little Fluttershy and Rarity so I did ^.^ On the car ride home, I decided that I wanted my own Mane 6 and after that, I wanted all the G4 ponies that appeared in the show. Once I got all of those, I was "done" with collecting. I had no interest in collecting the other generations, until recently when I decided that I want the G3 versions of the Mane 6 and now I'm also in the process of collecting my childhood ponies. In addition to that, when I saw Baby Stocking as the Pick of the Day, I decided that I needed her because she's so cute!
I've also realized that there's no hope for me  I'm hooked. Pretty soon I will want more G3s and I'm sure it will all go downhill from there. Although, I think I've done pretty well resisting other ponies. I started collecting back in August. So that's four whole months of resisting ponies :P

I grew up on the family farm with horses, but before hat happened my dad went to law school. Till I was about six we lived away in the city, and I always saw the horses and cattle maybe once a Minh. Like all little girls I wanted a horse so ponies just happened. I was really young when they first came out, but I remember getting my first ones when I was like five. My cousin was having a yard sale an she gave me the stable carry case and pony salon with two Peachy's and a flat foot Blossom. Those girls are still around.

I was discouraged from having toys as a child, especially anything girlish or cute, so I never had ponies growing up. But last spring a good friend sent me a detinseled Princess Primrose, and I just fell in love with her. As soon as I could I went out and bought my first pony on my own, a Fashion Style Pinkie Pie. Primrose is still my favourite of my collection.

Never had pony toys growing up, they discontinued before I was born. But I got into the TV series reruns in the '90s and MLP remained very nostalgic for me.
When I was 14 I felt very nostalgic again so I looked up some old pony cartoons- then sort of remembered something about there being toys, so I googled it. Oddly, I never had pony toys, but they looked so familiar! Like I remember them from somewhere. I just loved how colorful and adorable they were.
Anyways, I started buying off ebay back in 2006 until I found this site :) The first ones I got were the whole set of Year 1 Rainbow Ponies and baby Cherries Jubilee. They all arrived the same day!
-
my first pony was SS Scrumptious!! I LOVE watermelon and well she was the perfect pony for me. I still have her, just no pics
-
Fluttershy and RD were my first ponies, they were the ones with their scooter/vespa ,found them at a "tuesday morning " They were discounted for 4.99 each , they seemed super cool for that price and I had seen the FIM show recently like all the 2 seasons in a week LOL ,so I got them , and then I found a discount code in their package, went to Hasbro site and used the disc code and got the sets that were available there, then jumped to ebay to find the early releases and then ended up at the Arena through the reference site StrawberryReef :)
so lucky to have found this Forum/Community !

I want to say my first was wind whistler ? I can't remember to well I first found them at a day care when I was 4-5 years old and loved them. I know one was a flutter and they had the first carrying case that was shaped like a stable.
-
G1 Heart Throb was my 1st.
Funny my 1st G3 was Rainbow Dash, I wasn't planning to collect G3s, just got her to see "how is this new pony line", instant love.
The exactly same happened with G4, got Rainbow Dash just to check whats up with the new line, end up with about 30 G4s right now :P
-
SS Hippity Hop! <3 She was my first pony ever, and will always be the one that started my love of MLP. But G3 got me into collecting, Thistle Whistle started it for me.
-
My brushable Rarity might be what did it for me.
-
I had three ponies when I was about three or so. I can only remember vague details about them: two were normal G1 pony-sized, and one was much bigger. I can remember the colors pink and purple, and the larger one (who I called Mama Pony) was flocked, because I can recall it being rubbed off at the ears. I loved them at the time, but they faded away and I don't know what became of them. And my memory of them is too vague to find out who they were :o
I really did consciously get into ponies through G4 though. I watched all the episodes spring 2011, and right after went straight to the store to look for a brushable Applejack :) Got her, and a Rarity for me brother (the one that got me into the show). A few days later I went back for that gift set, with the molded hair Twilight, AJ, Pinkie, Celestia, and Spike. I thought that would be the end of it, because I never collected toys - or anything really - and it felt silly and weird. Buuuuuut...then I went to college and had complete freedom so things exploded :D

That was my first pony, too!
To answer the question at hand: I think what got me into collecting MLP wasn't necessarily any one particular pony, but rather a resurgence of fondness and nostalgia for the ponies I had and cherished as a child. I still have 3 of my 5 childhood ponies, and even when I was a teenager who was "too old" for toys, I never would have considered giving them away.
That said, the ponies who launched my post-childhood collection were:
G1: Sunlight, Glory, Firefly, Windy
G3: Sunny Daze II, Rainbow Dash II, Daisyjo, Petal Blossom
(I started collecting at the end of 2003)
-
My first pony was SS Windwhistler, whom I gt when I was four for Christmas (and then lost.)
The pony that got me I to collecting, though, was g3 Merriweather who was a birthday gift from my best friend. I needed a friend for Merri, so I bought Silver Glow and then I went on eBay and from there I was hooked. :)
-
Ivy and Lightheart.
-
I can't remember my first pony. I remember I had the Party Gift Pack and Daddy Apple Delight as they were hand-me-downs from a couple of my cousins, who were born in the early 80's. So those were my first ponies.
-
My first pony was Tassels. I have a soft spot for her. But the reason I got back into collecting in the G4 line. I think Fluttershy was my first in that line.
-
Glittering Gem or Happy Tails Tabby... don't totally remember...
-
Cotton Candy! She was my first pony as a little girl and the first pony I purchased when I started collecting :)
-
the second issue of G3 Rainbow Dash was the pony that started everything <3 I picked her up on a trip to the US with my grandparents. I was in a TRU deciding whether to take her or Sunny Daze
-
My pretty pony was my first pony. My first actual MLP was Bluebelle. She's the one that drove me into collecting as an adult too.

I think it's so sad that you got separated from your pony. :(
My first MLP was Ivy. But I didn't start collecting until over a decade later, when I got G3 Soda Float.

Wait, you're younger than I am?! That's kind of surprising! I had always assumed you were older than me.
Ponies *did* exist for me growing up, because I was born in 1989 and ended up in Switzerland from ages 3+, when ponies were still on the shelves! That, and people leaving the school I was at were the right age to have had ponies, so they put them into the school's junk shop, and thus, Ponies! I never got rid of them, I did lose Lullaby Nursery in the move back to the UK. I've tried buying replacement Lullaby Nursery sets but it's not 'my' one.
I got into ponies again with G2, and then dropped off...and suddenly found G3s in a back-of-beyond Pharmacy! I blame Rainbow Dash and Strawberry Swirl for making me find the collector community, in about 2004/2005, and I've never left. YOU SHALL NEVER BE RID OF MEEEEEE!
eta: .. Duh... Did it again. The first pony that I viewed as mine would be my G1 Majesty, whom I still own.
-
My Pretty Pony (Peachy) Was my first pony from a garage sale in the 90s. :) However due to her bulk I hardly ever played with her! Then my first brushable ponies were hand me downs from my Aunty/Cousins. :D Among them was a bunch of Year 2 ponies like Firefly, Melody, Bowtie, and Parasol

Hmmm... My first ponies were G3. I remember Butterscotch and Sparkleworks especially. I was always more a pokemon kid when i was growing up, but when i was introduced to mlp i loved them :) Then I sort of forgot about them.. until two years ago i found old butterscotch in a drawer, and decided to start looking at custom mlp online. That's where I fell in love with G1 :) My first G1 was a pinwheel I found at our flea market who was squished and had cancer and mold and was sticky x_x but, I found her the first time I went to the flea market, and I think that kept me from giving up because it showed me there were in fact ponies to be found there once in a while! :) Now i have a bunch that i've found there!
-
Was this your pony??
I'm not sure, but the mane and body colour looks familiar though.
-
G3 Butterscotch.
-
mine was G1 glory. what got me collecting wasnt my glory but a my pretty pony(non pony more pony mom) i got when i was 13. the my pretty pony could be still bought in stores when i was a little kid. hence why glory was my first real pony.
-

I have no idea who came first, but I prolly played with Sunspot the most. Springy (who was a male and called.... Riverman.... by me) was the boyfriend of ms creepy eye lashes princess. I didn't play with the princess that much because I thought she was snotty. I didnt play with Baby Sweetsteps that much either, which lead to her still having most of her factory curl.... but also me forgetting to put her in the "family photo" Gotta update that.... I dunno why the twins are twinless. I prolly gave them to one of my cousins.
-
Aw cottonTALE that is so sad, maybe one day someone at the arena can help you get back your pony to you.
My first pony/the one that started me collecting was Sweet suds. I got her for free at a toy store. Her box was damaged and they just gave her to me. Never stopped collecting since!
-
Either NSS Shady or Buttons for my 3rd birthday in June 1987, apparently I got Lightning for Christmas the same year :)
-
My first was G1 Bowtie that I got on Christmas morning, I think I was 4yo. I got Firefly later that morning, but I remember opening Bowtie first!
-
My childhood ponies were Star Glow and Lovin' Kisses, though I don't remember who came first. What got me into collecting was trying to buy them again after watching Friendship is Magic, and falling in love with all of the other ponies out there!
The first Hasbro pony in my collection (my first ponies were all fakies) was the baby Sea Pony, Sunshower!
-
My first ponies were TE Galaxy and NBBE Ribbon. I got both of them for Christmas at my Grandma's, I think I was 4 or 5.
-
I don't remember if I actually had real mlp ponies when I was little, but I do have a vague memory of Lemon Drop, so I guess I had her. ^.^ My mom threw away all my ponies so the mystery will never be solved. I kinda missed the G1 wave because I was born in -92. I don't remember owning any G2 ponies.
My first pony was bought a couple years ago from a flea market. G3 Hidden treasure. I just thought it was a cute toy and my friend wanted to buy it to me. My first G1 was Rainbow Curls Ringlet, which happens to be my ultimate favorite pony! XD I had just started thinking about how awesome it would be to own a few G1 ponies and Ringlet was just the perfect pony for me. I was sure I would never find it, but oh my! She was my first G1 find at the flea market. What a luck!

I was very lucky to get a small handful of G1s that had belonged to my sister. They were so battered, but I loved them dearly. They were SS Gusty, SS Magic Star, Sundance, and Sea Breeze, Lemon Drop, and a very chewed up Butterscotch
-
My first pony was a McDonalds Ivy. I wanted a real one, but I was too little (I think I might've been like 2...) so my parents got me that one and I carried her everywhere with me for a long time. I should get a real Ivy so my collection one of these days.
-
My first ponys where big brother steamer and baby cotton candy ^^
-
My very first pony was Peach Blossom, but the pony who really got me into collecting was my second pony Tassles. :)
-
My very first pony was Coco Berry from way back in 1987, and still love her. That's why she's in my sig :)
-
My first very own pony was Love Letter whom I got when I was very young, in the early 90's. She's still in a very good condition, just well loved.
-
I got four ponies at the same time!
Applejack, Bowtie, Peachy and Cotton Candy!
I still have them all!
-
My very first pony was G1 Twilight :)
-
G4 royal wedding Rainbow Dash. I bought her last June, and since then a few hundred others have moved in with her. ^^; She was my first re-tailing job, and I did not do very well. She needs a re-hairing, too, and I will do just that when I work up the motivation to make a re hairing tool and buy some glue. Here she is in a crash helmet:

Sorry to hear you lost your childhood pony, hope you find her one day.
-
Well, when I was growing up, I didn't have any ponies.
However, I can clearly remember my first pony: G3 Sing n' Dance Pinkie Pie. Bought her because I was intrigued, and then I grew to love her :)
-
G3 Snowflake. For Christmas 2003, G3's had JUST come out, everyone who asked me what I wanted got told "My little ponies". So they all got me them. xD So technically, I had 6 first ponies- Meadow Brooke, Star Swirl, Sparkleworks, Cotton Candy, Kimono, and Snowflake. Snowflake was the one I opened first though, so I consider her my very first pony.
visitors can't see pics , please register or login
So this was my childhood herd. I had the Cotton Candy Cafe and that was probably the only think I played with for a LONG time. Snowflake was my favorite, she's in pretty rough shape.
Edit: Ignore one one my Jack Sparrows photo bombing in the background. xD I woulda taken the picture somewhere else but you would see endless piles of heavy metal stuff and rockstar pictures photo bombing instead, so... :frolic:
-
This is my actual first pony who still takes pride of place in my collection and yes i took exceptional care of my ponies i did not like them getting dirty at all!
visitors can't see pics , please register or login
It wasn't one pony that got me into collection but my childhood colelction in general. I had a huge collection as a kid and when moving several years ago pulled them out of storage and washed them etc before deciding to keep them all. A friend visiting saw them all sitting there and said they thought they were very collectible so I got on Ebay for a look and before I knew it was bidding on some new additions and from there it just grew :-)
-
The first pony I ever remember getting was a G1 Glory..
I'm not sure where my grandma and mom found her.. but when i was a kid i had to have surgury and so before i went in they gave her to me to keep me company in the hospital.
Then later when I was a little older and healthier ... i would go to my grandmas and she would let me play with her ponies. So i had several G1s.
My folks didnt have a whole lot of money so we didnt get to buy them much i did get a few more tho... with my grandmas i had about 15
recently i decided to start collecting a gain.. and so i started finding more G1s on line..
and Swore up and down i wasnt going to get into g4s
then someone gave me a twilight and made me watch the show.. i was hooked..
-_-
I now own all of the playful ponies/brushables that you can get your claws on here in the states and a couple of internationals..
addictive lil monsters.
hehe any how.. cool thread darlin!
-
G2 Sky Skimmer. I didn't even realize that she was MLP until early last year. The first ones that I was aware of were G3 Sunny Daze and Pinkie Pie. :)
-
My first 2 ponies were from my cousin because she didn't want them anymore. Firefly and Sand Dollar (with her shell). :)
Still have them, and all of my childhood ponies have a spot in my china cabinet.
-
My very first pony that got me back into collecting. I saw G1 Medley on Dream Valley. I wondered if she was still available to buy. So I checked ebay...big mistake. I did end up buying her and lots others. I found the mlparena and the rest is history. Medley has such pretty colors all green and I love her symbols. I always loved music. I also remember playing with her alot as a kid because of the movie I think. (That was when I used to have her.) :) I still have that medley and a short haired medley too. I think the long haired one was the one I wanted the most. So I got her as the very first pony I started collecting.
-
Hmm that got me into collecting? Twilight + Applejack + Rarity + Pinkie Pie. All at once. Then Cheerilee and Lily Blossom sucked me in.
-
I had a fair-sized collection of them as a kid, but we had them since before I could remember. I think Mom and Dad bought them all at once at a yard sale.
My first pony that was bought new, just for me, was my favorite yellow fakie, Lite Brite. I was at my cousin's birthday party, which was dominated by boys. Instead of a grab bag, my Aunt bought a bunch of dollar store stuff that the kids could win as prizes or something. It was all boy stuff, except for one little yellow pony. I saw her package, and could tell Aunt Becky bought her just for me so I wouldn't have to pretend I wanted a sports ball or something, so I felt pretty special. (There, have I told that story enough yet? ;) ) I would post her pic, but I'm having photobucket troubles... She's a remco fakie (not a real Remco), the kind that has a longish neck, with dark blue paint hooves and neon rainbow hair. So she was a very unique pony, and often involved in games where she was mocked by the crowd and had to prove herself!
And yeah, G4 totally got me into ponies. I bought back (a fraction of) my original collection (including my beloved fakie!), but at that point had I told myself "I'm just going to recreate my old collection, that's it." But when I was shopping for Up Up and Away, I found one that came with Dancing Butterflies, who I never had. I said, "She's gorgeous too...." and well, here I am now!
-
My first pony was G3 Sunrise Song! I still remember going to Toys R Us and picking her out!
