So I'm thinking maybe early next year would be a fun time for the Carousel Swap! This swap would be skill based and divided into two catergories, with a small newbie class for those interested. Sculpting would not be required, but encouraged. Because of the complexity of the swap, I would probably limit entries to 10 or so depending on if there was any demand.
Carousel horses traditionally have a saddle (often an optional bridle as well). They come countless in designs.

Carousel Horses are a unique artform that has been around for centuries. While previously, artists had to hand carve their horses from wood, we have a distinct advantage!
Dates:
Sign ups: Start Jan 1st. Sign ups close when we are full or Jan 15th.
Partners assigned before or on: January 20th
Progress pictures required: March 1st
Final check in: April 15th
Shipping: May 1st (you will receive your partners address when you are cleared to ship!)
Please remember to always check your organizer's feedback before joining a swap.

Rules:
1. You must have 3 positive feedback for custom ponies and no negative feedback.
2. You must have been a member for at least 6 months before sign ups are over.
3. You must have completed at least 10 custom ponies before the sign up period. Please send pictures of at least 3 of your most recent customs to show the quality of your work. This is a skill based swap and I need to know where to put you.
4. Ship on time! I realize real life issues come up sometimes. If this happens, I want to know about it as soon as you realize you will be late.
5. No shipping early! I will be withholding addresses until shipping time to prevent this. The exception will be when your partner is ready to ship as well. I don't want anyone disappointed in this swap and with so many people going MIA lately, it's best for everyone to hold off until we are sure their partners haven't disappeared.
6. Be prepared with progress pics at progress date.
7. Send me pictures of your completed custom before you ship. I want to know your custom is complete before it goes out.
8. Let me know right away when you ship your pony and when you receive one.
9. Do not let anyone know who your partner is. It is secret.
10. Extras are not required, but are welcome. However, do not go overboard with these. This is about the customs. A small treat/gift or 2 is fine and good but not too much. After all, you worked hard on the custom, it should be the most exciting part!
11. This swap includes all generations of flowers (G1, G2, G3, G3.5, and G4), if there are any of these you do not like, include that in your form. Do not use any fakies unless your partner requests it.
12. You must be in no more than 2 other swaps (total of 3).
13. The title of your PM should be Glitter Bomb, so I know you read the rules.
14. PM the sign up form to me by the sign up deadline.
15. You must check in for the final check in 1 week before shipping. If you do not check in, you will not be receiving a pony.
16. KEEP YOUR SHIPPING RECEIPTS! You need to be able to produce proof of shipping when asked. You need to hold onto your receipt until your partner confirms that they have received their pony. I also highly recommend delivery confirmation for those not shipping internationally.
17. IF AT ANYTIME YOU DO NOT ABIDE BY ANY OF THESE RULES, YOU WILL BE PULLED FROM THE SWAP. This includes, but is not limited to, missing check ins and sharing partners. Make sure you are familiar with the rules before you sign up. You are expected to follow them.

This is an awesome idea and man, I love carousel horses so much....but there are four other swaps that are supposed to start around the same time as this that I was looking forward to and watching for already. Argh!

This gal plays music, TOTALLY not required for this swap. Even the pole is optional. I find a lot of carousel poles/bases at thrift stores for super cheap. (I am not a supply hoarder! Well, maybe...)

I think there was a straight no sculpting option. But you can go easy or hard. Here are two Breyer Customs, one I think a bit easy trapping wise and one a bit more complicated.

I will possibly start sign ups around the first. At this point I'm thinking of limiting the numbers to the first 15 people. We would have two classes, one for no to minimal sculpting and one with sculpting.

This is up to CSA but I'd guess that you can specify on your form which generations you prefer. I don't know if the funko vinyls are fair (they're hard to find) but the G4 FS ones would probably be.

I would think we would prorably want to stick to the ususal bait categories: G1, G2, G3, G3.5, G4. You *could* do a styling g4, but remember that you will probably not receive one in return.
I am LOVING the alternate animals! That's the beauty of the carousel, it can be simple and elegant or mindblowing!

Ooh - animal based ones! Yess! I have a cut-out carousel to assemble, but I've never cut anything out of it - I like the images too much! XD
I would definitely like to be in the tier with clay work - especially since I recently found out a clay place less than 2 blocks from my work might carry apoxie sculpt in-store. I'm going to check them out after the holidays are over. ^.^

My plan is to get sign ups going the 1st. I may cap it at 15 people, as it seems like I end up having to make up ponies for swaps and this one is just too intense for much of that.

I have clay and such but I admit I've not actually done much sculpting, and never on a pony so it makes me a little nervous, but it sounds like a blast. Would I be allowed to be in the no sculpting required category and ATTEMPT sculpting. Or is it not allowed at all?

Nothing wrong with that, you would not believe the reference I own. I have ridden carousels on both coast and in 5 or is 7 states now.

well you should be able to put on your list your likes and dislikes and your wants.
I for one love the halloween themed carosel ponies customizers have done in the past and would rather have something OOAK like that then based on any real carosel horse.
others may want a replica of a real one, adn others may want a non-horse. there's a lot of variety in what could be created.
If you really don't want to create something that's not a "traditional horse" - just let the swap moderator know when you send in your list. I'm sure they will try to pair you accordingly ;)

well, the hubby and I rode a Dr. Suess one while at the MLP Fair in orlando this year :) in Islands of Adventure I believe..
those were some crazy strange and cool carosel creatures - and many of them had a moving part via a lever you could use while riding!

There have been several new craves that feature endanger species and the like to get more attention. The old carvers though did a big selection of none equines including a Teddy Bear, Roosters, Frogs and strokes. I am old school though, I love that the new stuff is out there but given a chance I am gonna ride an old one before a new one. But that is me.
Oh and is it January 1st yet?

I will get info posted tonight. As I was working out details, a few specifics changed. Carousels, even painted ones, can be pretty detailed and time consuming. As a result, for this swap I am asking participants to have at least 3 positive feedbacks from customs they have made, have been a member 6 months of more, and have completed at least 10 pony customs. I want to ensure that everyone gets a pony and the last few swaps I'm been in have had flakers. :shrug: I'm tired of making replacement ponies.
That being said there will still be a little to no sculpting category and a sculpting category! I can't wait to see these amazing works of art!

There will not be a seperate class for those who do not meet the criteria on this one. That being said, if a newer artist or any artist isn't comfortable sculpting there will be the low to no sculpting class to help.

I thought, why not make a custom pole too? Out of like, a spray painted and sculpted pencil, or chopstick or something. Gotta be cheaper than buying one? Plus, it's also be customisable, which is awesome!

For smaller scale Breyer Carousel horse I actually us a very small knitting needle that is brass colored. I am sure you could find the right size (and they come in pairs) knitting needle.
Not all poles used on all carousel machines where spiral cut, many machines had plan brass poles as they where cheaper even back then to buy.

As long as the pole is in scale and you do not have a standing horse flying in the air I am good with them.
Actually not all carousel horses are on poles, there are at least three mechanisms that did not use poles like most folks think. Also many times real horses removed from a carousel will be displayed with out a pole if they are standers as real poles can be pricy and hard to deal with in a house.

Ummm... I was interested in making my own music boxes for a bit, so... Hang on, lemme check my bookmarks.
Edit: Right - woodworking supply stores, like Rockler and Woodcraft Hobby, may have something. Here's one kit that Rockler has on their web site - http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=4997&site=ROCKLER
Depending on what you have in mind, they may have it. Otherwise, making your own might not be too difficult, but that'll depend on the tools you have on hand. Both stores carry the movements too, depending on the song you want.

Best of luck, but to my eyes the pole is too far back and too heavy for the scale. But I am coming from a antique carousel perspective.
Not sure if I am going pole or not, I am not into them unless they are in scale and correctly placed. Mostly due to so many years of riding and studying the real thing I am afraid. But I did mention that in my form to try and make it easier on who ever got me.

A hippocampus is a seahorse right? If so, they're not exactly scaly anyway. They're more like horizontal ridges. I think you'd get the best of both worlds that way.

I like scales, but that's just because I think they're so pretty and delicate looking. Also, looking at some pics, it looks like you can change the whole look of the horse with just varying the look of the fins on the tail end of things.

Sorry I am so used to thinking that way, but yeah romance side is the fancy or display side. In the USA, the right side is normally the romance side since that is the way the carousel turned and is the side that faced out to folks walking up to the carousel would see. It would be fully detailed, while the off side or to pony folks non display side would have plainer carving. I do all my Breyer customs that way so was wondering how pony peeps might take it.

On another note... I finished my sculpting. I finished, mainly because I knew that if I'd kept playing with it, I'd ruin things, so I put a base coat of paint over everything to prevent me from adding anything else. And hair showed up today! Woot!

When I first started customizing, I was carelessly cutting off Minty's head and I sliced my thumb pad open. Great googly moogly did it bleed! But I just put pressure on it until it stopped, and it was not deep enough that I needed stitches or anything. The tough thing was a few days later I started a new job, so I had to do my job and baby it at the same time, lol!

Yeah, i don't even know how many times I've cut my fingers. This one was by far the deepest though. On the top of my index finger, sliced right across the knuckle, so i can't bend it now :(

OMG, I did the same thing!!! I was beheading a G4 and jabbed a brand new exacto into the side of my hand between my finger and thumb. The cut itself looks so small, but almost the entire blade went in. It probably does need stitches, but considering I don't even have the guts to change the bandaid I'm probably not going to work up the guts to have a needle and thread jammed in there! I was so motivated too.... :(

Well, it wasn't the carousel pony that did it to me!
Carousel pony is coming along beautifully, however. I've finished her initial sculpting, and her body painting. Depending on how much of my commissioned work I can get done today, I'll start working on painting her details tonight. I'd love to get at least a coat of sealer on her, but it's waaaaay too windy outside for it today.

I got my hair from dollyhair yesterday! (It looks the same size as any other hank I have gotten) I don't know when I'll start sculpting. I do have some commissions that I should finish first I think.

I cut mine, very carefully with my husky knife. It's going to be covered with either clay or the caps for the pole anyway, so it doesn't have to be neat. :/

Hole pole drilled, thought there will still be some fagnaggling to get it straight and totally upright. Much easier to use poles on Breyers, MLP are just not built for it. LOL

I found some non removeable marks on my pony when I was sculpting yesterday, drats.. didnt notice them before, now I have to work out how to cover them in my design!

OK new problem, Ive run out of Apoxie sculpt, another project im doing keeps breaking, and ive used it all up, so now Ive just ordered some Magic Sculpt, because Diamond mentioned she likes it better, I looked into it an its cheaper to buy in Australia, than it is to get Apoxie from overseas, anyhow. What I need to know is, I have 1/3 sculpting done on this carousel pony, can I use the Magic sculpt with it? does it join to cured Apoxie ok? or do I need to get more Apoxie to finish this girl? Thanks in advance for your input!

Saja, you should be fine to incorporate the Magic Sculpt with the Apoxie. They're practically identical. The only difference I've noticed between the two is that Apoxie seems to sand a little better.

If I am using Apoxie Sculpt, should I sculpt first or should I rehair and then sculpt? I don't want to sculpt and then things break. That would be a disaster!

Thats so interesting! I rehair first! Ive broken sculpting when pushing the rooting tool into the hair line, So ive always done it this way, and I plait the hair and wrap it in plastic and it stays out the way easy!
And thanks Phylliebean Another difference between the 2 for me is that Apoxie is not sold in Australia, where as Magic sculpt has a distributor a couple states over.

Yeah you can put one over the other no problem. From what I have done with it so far, it is easier to sand not harder then aves but both are way easier then the old stuff I used to use.
Since I do not hair, it is not a worry, but when I do my sculpts I usually do the trappings and the like first and then do the mane so I do not have to work round it.

I just placed an order with DollyHair (fingers crossed) with some colors I'd like to use on this girl. If they don't show up in time I still have what I originally chose for her, but I think she'd look even better with what I bought today.

So I've been done for about a week or two now. There might be one more more thing that I do to make the finished product more "polished", but it's done. Yesterday I was doing some cleaning and reorganizing of my workspace and had my swap pony set up on the top of my washing machine with a bunch of other projects.
Suddenly, I heard a strange clicking sound. I turned around and discovered one of my cats rubbing his face on the top of the pony's "pole". I took it away from him, and as the project got into direct light I noticed a bunch of little teeth marks in the top part of the pole.
Bah. Now I've gotta paint that spot again.

I'm having a problem with my carousel pony - went to order the pole just now (finally!) and the site that has the larger and smaller pole is giving me a 404 error. I should be able to get the smaller pole from the other vendor, but does anybody know another place that carries the larger pole? :(

Am I allowed to be amused that the wind chimes I ordered with my poles to make up the $19 minimum to ship came with instructions, while the poles themselves did not? :P
Anyway, I have a pile of parts here, and while I can sort-of figure it out, I have to admit that I'm carousel-pole-inept. Also, I am unable to screw the center section into the bottom section (the one that has internal and external threading) strait. I'm starting to worry if its not just me, and it's mis-threaded. :huh:
Meanwhile, I found my snowflakes! Huzzah! I will be possibly taking a heat gun to them, since they're flat and won't work as they are, so we'll see how that turns out. Meanwhile, how does this pole go together?
Edit: Okay, I figured out the threading, but where do all the washers and the nut go for the assembly? Also, the center rod is a bit longer then the middle of my pony; should I be cutting it down to size?

Im so glad you got her ok, and like her, CSA gave me the ok to ship early!! So im pretty rapt she got there so super fast, I was thinking it might help you if you got mine before you finished your pole yourself to help out. Glad she made it there!

The sun is shining here and I'm hoping this last snow fall will be the last one for the season. I want warmer weather!
I found the head for the bait I'm using - hiding with some other, already painted heads on the nail board on the top shelf. Because of course I would put it where it makes sence, until I put the nail board up out of the way while cleaning the work table off. 9.9
I'm waiting for some glue to dry, then will get the last of the clay work finished. Should get the painting started (and hopefully finished) tonight. :)

Done! Took the rollers of last night and got the topper on, she looks good to my eye :) as soon as get home I will try to design a packet that will hold her in one piece while travelling to my dear partner ;)

Tomorrow is the shippingday for me... Now I must wish that my luck on int.shipping still works, because I can't afford to ship this one on registered mail! I will ship priority mail, and as a "big letter" it will cost me 26 euros! If I would take registered packet it would be over 40 euros.... So that marble base was not such a good idea... well, it only hurts once...

Waiting for the first layer of body paint to dry. The clay work took me longer than I thought it would, and then I realized I had to add the hair *now* so I could do the clay work around the neck seam. So now I'm trying to paint with the hair in the way. :lol: Oh well. I really like how this pony is turning out. :D

I don't think I'll be done on time. It is taking more layers of paint than I thought and I want it to look nice, so I'm going to strive to be done and shipped by Friday. Hope that's okay!

Had to do some touch-up painting while putting it on (ie, "how did that color get there??"), but seal coat #1 is done. Except for the sadle and the one hoof; started sealing it then went, "hey wait - I never put my mark on this pony! :blink: " so took the sealer off the hoof and put on my mark. Waiting for that to dry before I seal the hoof. Eyes have been glossed over twice now, might do a third layer tomorrow. I plan to put the second seal coat on tomorrow before work, if I'm able to. I close tomorrow, so don't go in until 1pm. At this stage, I think I'll be able to ship on Wednesday as planned, but it'll depend on how styling her hair tomorrow night goes. I'm off Wednesday, though, so should have plenty of time to wander down to the post before they close. :satisfied:
In the meantime, it's after 11:30pm here, and I've been up since 4am. Good night. :zzz:

Touch up painting done, and found another spot while sealing. X( What is it with ears and not having the sealer protect them as well as the rest of the body? Also, I kinda created a new spot when I put in the center part of her necklace. :blush:
Downside, I'm not sure I like her as much with the center piece I chose for her necklace. Upside, I can't keep her anyway, so it might be just as well. ;)
The base is finally behaving itself, which is nice. Once the elements for that are all done, I should be able to attach the pony to her pole and get her photographed and boxed for mailing. :)

I'm doing all i can to finish this pony right on time... but it seems like life felt like putting a challenge in my life right when I least asked for one. I had a mom cat with 3 kittens a little over 1 month old, and unfortunately on Monday the mom cat got hit by a car and didn't make it :( so I had to get everything ready to foster the kittens at home.
I'll do my best to finish, but if I can't my apologies beforehand to my partner and to the host for the tardiness :(. The pony is coming out beautifully and I'll try to work as quick as possible without rushing (I definitely don't want to deliver a low quality custom!).
