but I don't see why they need to be jerks about it, even if I don't personally like G3

It's nothing to worry about; they've said before that they're just joking anyway. Most of them are quite nice and respectful if you mention that you like the older gens. :)

Is it bad that a part of me would love to see them have like at least one "scene/segement" in an episode where the main cast got "past gen'd" (maybe even as an IRL April Fool's prank of sorts)? Like, maybe one of Twilight's spells went wrong and they got turned into a past gen look for a few moments. Like Applejack getting G1'd, Rarirty and Pinkie Pie getting G3'd, ect.?

I thought she looked really cute. If the characters in the show looked like that, I'd be okay with it. I hope they weren't trying to make fun of people who liked previous generations, because their target audience might have watched some, too.

I think they were just referencing that Pinkie Pie used to be the queen of ponies in G3 and G3.5, but now has taken a back seat to Twilight Sparkle in G4. It was awesome!
I was watching the show livestream from MLPForums1 and the bronies all went ballistic when they saw it. They said watching the LPS premier was worth it JUST to see that commercial. Of course, they were all creeped out and mistook it for G1, but they kept wanting to see it again. Within about 10 minutes, the chat was flooded with screen grabs of the commercial. That and Gak... They do love their Gak.

I playfully joke about g3 and g3.5 all the time, and I'm a Brony. I personally love g3 and g3.5's design is kinda creepy, but the characters are actually pretty cute after awhile. I liked this little gag.

There were others who wanted to see that happen though. Not just him. I wanted to see it happen because I, too, love that character. The episode's synopsis and that picture of Ponyville has me a teeny bit worried, but in the end, I'm sure I'll still like the character. :)

I'm not exactly sure how I feel about this. I'll just have to wait to see the whole episode and see in what context the G3 face appears. The scared reaction from Fluttershy and Rarity makes me think it's in a mocking tone, but I REALLY hope that's not the case, and they're just making a little nod to us older fans. That's what I want to think. I just don't want them to be mocking older generations. But...I will say, G3-faced G4 Pinkie looks pretty darn cute to me!

I don't think the scared look on Fluttershy's and Rarity's faces mean it was meant to mock G3. If a good friend of yours bent their face out of its normal proportions I'm sure you'd be pretty startled too.

Yeah, do any of the character designers work on G4? If not, that's pretty mean.
I really don't like being so negative towards G4 these days, but I have to fully agree with you.
If I wouldn't know that the majority of Bronies hates G3 and if I wouldn't know that Hasbro is very aware of that and eager to cater to them, I would have seen it as a pretty funny Easter Egg for older fans.
But as things are, it is most likely a jab at the artistic style of G3.
Giving Ditzy Doo little background scenes and having Lyra Heartstrings and Bon Bon be best buddies is a nice nod to the Brony fanbase and I'm totally cool with that.
But having G4 ponies react disgusted when seeing a G3 face is kinda lame. Sorry.
Kinda makes me wish for G3 Minty to pop up and teach 'em a lesson on who's clearly best pony (and who wore socks long before the Bronies tried to make it a thing) ;)
PS: I'm not hating on Bronies here, just calling out the ones who constantly have to point out how "ugly and dumb" G3 was.

I dunno. I like all the generations, and I wasn't the slightest bit offended by it. I thought it was funny and cute..... but everyone's entitled to their own thoughts on it. Those were just mine. :)

The inclusion of the G3 pinkie face doesn't bother me, but the reaction to it does. I'm always amazed by the lack of understanding that without older generations of ponies the current ones wouldn't exist. Friendship Is Magic didn't just pop out of thin air.

:blush: Yes, please be a little nicer. I know many, many Bronies who love other generations, including me. Just because the ones who don't are way more "vocal" about their opinions, doesn't mean that opinion is shared with ever single Brony. And I would react the same way if my friend could randomly change their face to something really weird. :lol:

Pinkie Pie, you've got some ' splainin to do! It's an interesting twist but as a G3 fan, I would rather they either didn't do that or have Pinkie Pie go all-out G3. It just doesn't look right seeing it 1/3 G3 on 2/3 G4. No offense to anyone that enjoyed the commercial of course.

i actually didnt like it :( the face thing isnt what bothered me, the disgusted reactions did. really? rude much... nothing like a company bashing its own old line.... they could have made the faces shocked and it would have been maybe funny. but disgust is pretty mocking.

Hasbro doesn't technically make FiM, though. They just "oversee" it and make sure stuff isn't too "scary" or "bad" and whatnot.
What I'm hoping is that it's an edited commercial, as in the "disgusted" reactions were edited in (perhaps Rarity and Flutter were reacting to something else)

I don't really like the G3.5's though.. Their faces are really scary :( Especially the dolls.
Anyway, I laughed really really hard when that happened on the ad! I even did vector of my own pony based on a screen capture of Pinkie Pie.

I think it's just another nod to adults who watch the show (forced or otherwise) they've made plenty of "adult themed" jokes before. All you've ever wanted to know about Sleepovers (but was afraid to ask)

I've shown my friends old photos of myself, when I used to color my hair. Their reactions are pretty horrified because it doesn't look like me. "You looked so different!" "That's so weird to see you as a blonde" "Is that really you?" etc. That's how I saw this thing. I don't think it's part of a future episode, just a one-shot joke for a commercial.
I used to watch Pokemon on Kids WB all the time, and they would do funny one shots for commercials. Like Batman singing the Jigglypuff song. It's just supposed to be funny.

Big difference between "not liking something" and "telling people they are idiots for liking something".
My point is , if you have seen some of the bashing, you're not just going to think "lol silly face".
The animators didn't want to "attack" people. The animators wanted to make another nod to the brony fandom (you can't say that doesn't happen). This time the fact that a lot of bronies (not all of them) can't stand G3.
The reaction Fluttershy and Rarity are having is pretty much how a lot of bronies would react. But again, just check EQD for that one.
I'm not going to believe for a second it's a nod to long time / old gen fans, since these days nothing is aimed at long time / old gen fans. The show is no different from that. There hardly have been such nods in the show before and now that they put a blatant nod into it, it's a mocking one about G3. What a coinkidink.
But if people just believe it's a "lol out-of-context face" joke. More power to them. At least they aren't dissapointed by the show creators.

Michaelangelo was thinking of getting a tattoo of his face on his face, so it'd look like he's wearing a mask.. :ninja: While he says that, he moves his hand across his face and a 'G1' Michaelangelo's face appears on his face. (Episode 8, at 10min, I think it aired last weekend). The others aren't very thrilled. :P
I didn't find neither of these offensive and I have hard time understanding why anyone would get offended by things like this.

G3 is just as hated. It is deemed to be "too girly and stupid". You'll find the same kind of comments on G3 video's and images as you will find on G3.5 ones. I think most people don't get that the show was aimed at very young children and that some animations had pretty much no budget.

As we haven't seen the episode yet, we don't know in what context the G3 face is shown. But, as the commercial stands, yes, I am offended. It's clear that Rarity and Fluttershy's looks of horror and disgust are supposed to represent the bronies who endlessly bash previous generations. Apparently Hasbro wishes to give another nod to the immature, disrespectful side of the fandom (and no, before anyone jumps on my back, I am NOT saying that all bronies are immature or disrespectful, but it's that kind of brony that Hasbro is trying to appeal to with this particular "joke").
As someone who has suffered horrendous hate mail and death threats from so called "bronies" who hate previous gens (and watched friends go through the same just because they worked on the old cartoons), I think this is awful. I'm fine with Hasbro pandering to the new fanbase if that's where their money's coming from, but it's a bit of a kick in the teeth for them to join in making fun of those of us who have supported them through G1-3 over the years.
I've been keeping well clear of the pony community, hoping this nonsense would die down. But this weekend I received a NEW batch of pathetic hate mail and came to investigate... I figure it was brought on by the new series, but specifically this commercial. Hasbro have been made well aware of the hate that is already flying around. How cruel to encourage more of it.

I think Spike meant that true pony lovers would respect ALL fans of MLP, whatever generation(s) they like, and wouldn't write rude comments about G1-3/attack fans of those gens just because they personally don't like it. Nobody expects everyone to like all the generations, but it would be nice if people could respect others' opinions. I'd be equally disappointed in fans of previous generations who went to a FiM video and started screaming "Kill it with fire! All G4 fans must die!" :silly:

I don't know anything about the TMNT fanbase. Is there a lot of hate and hostility between the old and new fans? I don't think anybody would have a problem with this sort of joke if the entire MLP community was as friendly as it is here at the Arena. But take a quick look across the internet and you will find places where the atmosphere is anything but friendly (even Youtube, which is where my hate mail began when I DARED to stick up for a G1 voice actor I know). I realise I'm especially sensitive because of my own personal experiences, but you have to understand that there is still a lot of trouble between bronies and previous generation fans on some websites. Hasbro are well aware of the problems in this community and "jokes" like this do nothing to help keep the peace between two of their main consumer groups.

TMNT fanbase seems okay from what I've seen. I've seen some complaints of "NOT LIKE WHAT IT USED TO BE" which happens with every cartoon thing out there, but they seem pretty genial over all.

I still think the clip is funny, but I will say that some "bronies" have made fun of me before for my tattoos, because they're based on the G3 ponies, and that makes me sad. But it is what it is. People will always hate on you and things you like, no matter what they are.

I thought the G3 reference was cute. I am not a brony though. I am fan of G1's and G3's. I didn't take offense to this. Just because there are some people who do not like previous generations, it doesn't change my opinion about the generations I love the most. I can understand why some people would be offended to that but to me it doesn't matter, whether it was an act of making fun of G3 lovers. It's like someone calling you names because you wear glasses or something like that. Just ignore the mean comments and keep on loving the ponies that you love. If someone says G3's are stupid, ignore them. They're just words and don't mean a thing. ;)

This is my standpoint exactly. The visual gag is funny, but the implications of it are not. It's easy to see how a fan of the current generation who is hateful of all older pony things can see this clip and go "Ha, see, even hasbro/the show think that the older ponies are hideous and stupid, we've been right all along, so let us continue to be aboslutely horrid to everyone who isn't like us because pinkie pie has given us all the validation we need!" I don't think that is at all what the clip was meant to do, but we've seen before how people of this persuasion grasp on to the tiniest little thing and make it into a huge deal and make it their own.

There was a very similar thing in the new TMNT show. Michaelangelo was thinking of getting a tattoo of his face on his face, so it'd look like he's wearing a mask.. :ninja: While he says that, he moves his hand across his face and a 'G1' Michaelangelo's face appears on his face. (Episode 8, at 10min, I think it aired last weekend). The others aren't very thrilled. :P
I didn't find neither of these offensive and I have hard time understanding why anyone would get offended by things like this.
I don't know anything about the TMNT fanbase. Is there a lot of hate and hostility between the old and new fans? I don't think anybody would have a problem with this sort of joke if the entire MLP community was as friendly as it is here at the Arena. But take a quick look across the internet and you will find places where the atmosphere is anything but friendly (even Youtube, which is where my hate mail began when I DARED to stick up for a G1 voice actor I know). I realise I'm especially sensitive because of my own personal experiences, but you have to understand that there is still a lot of trouble between bronies and previous generation fans on some websites. Hasbro are well aware of the problems in this community and "jokes" like this do nothing to help keep the peace between two of their main consumer groups.
I haven't got a clue about the TMNT fanbase, I just watch the shows and try to stay away from the toys. However I have seen very hateful comments made by bronies about G3s. I just wouldn't tie them to the clip like it was meant to be offensive.
I haven't been really bashed about being a G1 collector, but some of my acquaintances/not the closest friends but some sort of friends have made few not so nice comments (though they we're probably joking) after the whole G4 thing became a 'thing'. They seemed to forget that I have been collecting for years before G4s even existed (they'd seen my collection and thought it was cool and took even pics of my ponies) and think that I'm just another brony.. or 'pegasister' as one of them calls me everytime he sees me.. :hmm:

To be fair, they have put in shoutouts to previous generations. Nightmare Moon is basically Tirac, and there was a male Firefly-looking character in Hurricane Fluttershy.

No who has worked on the show has ever expressed any such opinions, and I wouldn't be surprised if some of them worked on G3 videos.

I think the thing with TMNT is that it keeps getting resurrected every couple years after fizzling out and it's not as fresh or new as the ninja turtle explosion of the 80's/90's.
A lot of the toys seem like tired rehashes too, the lair, the van, the turtles, April, Splinter, Shredder, Foot guy, Random alien, etc.. The old one just seemed more varied, experimental, and innovative; like a helicopter that dropped little smoke bombs or a garbage can catapult that launched boogery ooze that stained everything. Toys were a lot grosser back then.
Ahh, that reminds me of one of my favorite childhood playsets, the Captain Planet Toxic Sludge Dump. It's just basically a trap door that you put a figure on and it tipped over and dumped green silica gel all over them, yuck. I don't remember the episode where that happened.

As I said earlier, I think the bronies bashing G3 are getting it confused with G3.5. They're not the same.. So when people say that G3 sucks and is stupid, I have to remind them that there's a difference between the G3's and G3.5's! I don't think they are talking about G3's because I absolutely ADORE the G3's.
G3 is just as hated. It is deemed to be "too girly and stupid". You'll find the same kind of comments on G3 video's and images as you will find on G3.5 ones. I think most people don't get that the show was aimed at very young children and that some animations had pretty much no budget.
But I don't see why people should say it's stupid if it is aimed at very young viewers. It's for younger viewers and that's already a known fact, not for older ones like G4 is apparently. Hate is a strong word, I don't hate it, I like the dolls from it at least :P If we were little when G3 first released, I would think we'd all like it. G1 for example, we were all kids when G1 shows were on the telly and we do love G1's. I guess that's the generations of us and not the generations of the shows. That's why there are lots of collectors that don't collect other gens but G1. Wow this took a while to type out! *sips coffee*

The way you phrase it is like they are making a purposeful dig at G3 fans. Also I didn't say Studio B/DHX Media was behind any of the G3 cartoons, but people aren't married for life to a studio and animation is a rather small industry. Tabitha St. Germain (Rarity, Luna) was also the voice of Minty, Wysteria, and Thistle Whistle for example.

We all know this incarnation of the show has some questionable and problematic aspects. This is one of them. Yes it is just an ad, yes it is a shout out to bronies (which I have to agree with many of you that this is troubling due to validating G3 bashing), but it is enforcing the whole concept of different is bad.
The ad was very cute and as others have pointed out, what makes it problematic is the other ponies' negative reactions to her. She was making a silly face. They were disgusted. It wasn't a face where she was pulling up her eyelids or picking her nose (you know actual disgusting things) but it was a cute face where she was merely different. The negative reaction from the others is telling. It wouldn't be that big of a deal if it were Family Guy or a show targeted to adults but this is a kids' show that is meant to be a positive influence. What did that exchange tell us?
Sure the ponies (and writers) have done bad things before. Like I said, it is a show that is often problematic.
Also, many of you are saying that "oh it was nothing, stop reading so far into it". Well these things do not exist in a vacuum and critical analysis of the media you consume is not only very interesting, it is important. Even if it seems bizarre what others are saying, just try to understand their perspective, regardless of whether you subscribe to their ideas or not. You could learn something interesting.

But I LOVE to play Devil's Advocate: One could argue that the ponies acting disgusted by something that isn't disgusting was a joke in itself. Like, it's an example of flawed logic to be scared of something just because it's different. Plus, look who's responding: it's Fluttershy, who is (literally) scared of her own shadow, and Rarity, who has had visions of what beauty is supposed to be put upon her her whole life, and...well, now I'M the one reading too much into this. :)
Probably no one meant any harm in writing this commercial, but I'm sorry people feel maligned over it. That's not a cool result. :(
Also, picking one's nose is not disgusting, but rather a great way to relax after a hard day working among dust and fibers, and appropriate in private situations. :lol:

I think what a lot of people are irritated about is how it's a stab at past generations. Basically another way for bronies to put down anything that's not G4. That's how I interpreted it. G4s didn't come from anywhere. Guess it's awful that the past generations were pandered to girls. They don't want to think the show they love has previous incarnations that were more 'childish' and 'girly'.
Gah! Sorry for the negativity. That was just my initial thought.
I love FiM but sometimes it's hard to do so. A fandom can kill things for you.

I'm also of the opinion that this was a shout-out to the bronies. We've seen that repeatedly in this show... in face, I don't know of ANY other cartoon or show out there currently that responds to their online fanbase as much as FIM does.
It's one thing that makes FiM stand out so much compared to all the other shows on tv (with an exception to voting reality shows). The fact that they acknowledge their fanbase and respond to fan trends that are popular online (and in person at conventions, etc.)
And what have we seen time and again from many of the most vocal of the brony community? That FiM is the only 'good' ponies and the previous generations are far inferior, below their level of intelligence, not as original/interesting/cool/insert word here, etc.
I think it's obvious, based on Fluttershy and Rarity's expressions, that they were expressing exactly what bronies would express when they saw this clip:
"A FiM character with a G3 face!? How disgusting and laughable!"

Yes, unfortunately this is the internet, where people can ruin, mangle, or suck the fun out of anything. I suppose the best we can do is try and avoid places where people can get us this worked up and stressed about anything. That is why I am happy we have the Arena. It is a great place where people are respectful to each other and can gracefully exchange opinions on matters.
We shouldn't have to go around defending what we like.

Yep, I agree with that. I mean, the commercial didn't just rise out of the sea on a seashell, fully formed. Someone CHOSE to make it and CHOSE which clips to put in and how to line them up. And I feel they did do it in a "hai hater bronies look at this lolz previous gens suck lolz" context, which is not cool.
Very happy about the episode itself, though.

I'm glad that in context the "crazy face" moment was better (that clip, Pinkie you're just so cute <3.) Unfortunately, that doesn't make the commercial, and all the negative comments that were already made in response to it, magically disappear.
Pretty much this. Nothing has changed. Most people are still going to claim this is proof of G3 being stupid. Making the hate towards G3 only stronger. Not to mention it's probably still catering to bronies who hate G3. Cause lets' face it, those people greatly outnumber the G3 fans. "G3 is stupid" is like a joke that never gets old to them. And with there being several other brony jokes in the ep, i'm still not going to believe this was a nod to G3 fans.

The episode itself was fine (although there is no way that G3 face was a "nod to the older fans"), but the commercial was most certainly spliced together for the hater bronies.
On a certain forum (I know we can't link here), I see that the immature part of the fandom are currently homing in on how great it was that the "ugly G3 Pinkie was blown up"...so "Hasbro still agrees with them". I see a few posts about our "premature overreactions" across the web too. (which is funny...I didn't see anyone overreact here, we were quite calmly discussing the advert) Well, whatever makes them happy, I guess. I still feel that this whole thing has set us back as far as eradicating the hate and building bridges between the two communities goes. :(

A) Because not being able to check out G3 stuff without seeing stuff like "kill it with fire" gets annoying very fast. Youtube videos are one thing but you even see that stuff on art sites. During the EQD april fools joke several old gen customizers got nasty comments because of it.
B) Because some people don't just attack the gen. They attack the fans. If you don't mind being called an idiot for liking gen3, good for you.
Not to mention there is nothing wrong about pointing out how hypocritical this behaviour is. Bronies ask to not get mocked for loving ponies all the time. So why the need to mock old gens? And yes there is a difference between not liking a gen and being a jerk. I don't like spiders but i don't seek out every video of spiders just to post "Ewww kill it with fire!!!".

Some people can brush these kinds of things off, but for others this situation is not so easily ignored. Some members of our community have been harassed very vigilantly for their liking of older generations. Some of us who haven't experienced that hatred directly for ourselves still find the behavior to be absolutely deplorable and don't think it should be just ignored. If some people aren't bothered by it, then that's great for them. But I don't think it's fair for anyone to discount and dismiss the people who have been truly upset and hurt by this spiteful behavior by saying they're reading too much into it or asking what the harm is.

But there is a difference between someone just not liking earlier gens and expressing their feelings and someone harassing someone for liking earlier gens. The second one is not okay and crosses the line. Not everyone who says "KILL IT WITH FIRE" when a G3 appears in an episode on a certain FIM site is going to go and harass someone. I just been getting this vibe lately that people think if someone doesn't like a certain gen or a certain pony then they should just shut up and keep it to themselves even if they don't cross any lines. That isn't right either.

I don't think anybody has an issue with people saying that they dislike a particular pony or generation? To each their own. I'm afraid I have more important things in life to worry about than whether or not someone on the internet shares my taste in children's toys/TV shows!
The problem, as Maliceuse already pointed out, is when some "fans" take it to extremes, writing on EVERY Youtube video of that show just to say how "pathetic" anybody watching it is. These are usually the self same "fans" who will get up in arms if you politely tell them you don't like their favourite cartoon during a conversation.
Even then, I personally can turn a blind eye to those idiots. If they want to waste their lives writing "Kill it with fire!" and "This is cancer!" on every G1/G3 cartoon, that's their problem. I just ignore them and move on. But when they make personal attacks on fans or the people who worked on those shows, as certain people have done and are doing to me, I get mad. I have had some very graphic threats of rape and murder sent to me via Youtube (yes, over something as innocent as my choice in MLP!), as anyone on my Facebook can certify. I've been told that these people will "track me down" if I "don't cease contact with the enemy" (a guy who worked on a few of the Tales episodes 20 years ago, in case you were wondering who this evil "enemy" was!) They claim to know where I go to school, or where this guy works... They tell him to "die in a car crash as the world would be a better place without him"...while he was really recovering from a car crash last year and suffering severe depression. I've had to delete some of my Facebook friends because these guys were getting into my friends and family through FB. I've watched another person I know, who worked on the G3 cartoons, repeatedly told that they "wished she'd die of cancer" while her own mother really WAS dying of cancer. This "joke" brought another lot of hate down on her particularly last week, but she's so sweet that she just quietly deletes it from her Facebook fan page and never says a word.
THAT is why some of us are so riled up about this. There is nothing wrong with liking or disliking a certain pony generation(s), or with having a calm discussion about your favourite/least favourite fictional ponies. There IS something wrong with telling an actor he "deserves to die" because you don't like a voice he did in a cartoon 20 years ago, and then threatening to rape his friend for defending him.
Be proud of what you like and dislike, but don't attack people who think differently to yourself. It takes all types to make a world, and you'll be surprised how many friends you can make by using a little kindness and respect.
I'm out of this thread now. I can see it's on a spiral to being locked and I don't want to be part of that. :(

Oh Lancer that is quite awful. Those kind of people will look for any excuse to bully someone. If it wasn't over working on an earlier gen of MLP it would be over making MLP at all. But yeah it looks like the G3 face was a friendly nod and not mocking or anything. Still doesn't change what those jerks did tho.

Okay, first off, I want to say I read like 4 pages of this thread after watching it... yikes sometimes!
Anywhooooves - my take on that little G3 blip - the people who like FIM have really been able to connect with the characters in this new animation style they use... and so, to see a throwback of a face that I think is more attached to merchandise (G3 Pinkie Pie), may leave people being like "eww!" or "whaaaaa?" or something - because they themselves don't feel very personally attached to that character, as they do with G4 pinkie, if that makes sense...
But for me - I thought it was funny. I also hope it's not mocking, I mean, Hasbro shouldn't mock, they still have G3 merch out there and G3.5 (ok but PLEASE don't put G3.5 into FIM), and they made a ton of G3 ponies, so I'm sure they made bank off it.
The way Fluttershy and Rarity respond does seem to be a bit mocking or even disgust (I rewound that part like 100x)... but again, I haven't seen any other context so it may be cut completely differently in the actual show (you know how they do that...)
I LOVE Gen1 - I loved the old show, but to me, they're all from different worlds so it's hard for me to see them splished together - like, the G1s seem too "innocent" to be in the FIM world, and not that the FIM world is "bad" or "guilty", but they're far more modern than the cartoon ponies in the 80s.

If it's a planned gag since season 1, I don't think it would be a brony-pandering moment then. Remember, when they first started working on the show, they didn't know there would be a big (and sometimes cruel) fanbase. Of course, there have been some claims that there were shoutouts to a horrible brony fanfic in S1, but there wasn't.
Often, people see what they want to see. Or they just want to stroke their egos. :P
