So we always seem to have threads which have the silliest or the funniest or the most inappropriate pony names so it got me to thinking what is the best pony name. What name did Hasbro conceive and name a pony which just seems to personify the pony's colour or character perfectly or which captures everything about MLP? The kind of name that if heard out of context in every day life you would say "that sounds like the name of a My Little Pony".
For me there is Rainbow Dash, whether G3 or G4, it just seems to sum up MLP for me and Lickety Split, it fits her Baby character so well and again just sounds like the name of an MLP.
-
Mmmm... With a glance over at my desk, Starlight is the first that comes to mind :) I just got this wee girl so I'm a little enamored ;) But then there is also Moondancer, which I think feels quintessentially mlp. Maybe it's the celestial theme in those names that makes them feel a little escapist and sort of magical?
I dunno... I just feel like they let the imagination flourish a little, which is why perhaps so many of us feel so deeply for mlp anyway - for many of us it's a connection to childhood ^.^
-
Sugarberry for me, though also Skydancer/Sky Dancer, Starswirl, Dream Drifter, and Cloud Climber.
Apart from the first (which may be just a wacky sugar.lightning thing), you may be onto something with the celestial theory, Marlin. ^.^
-
Pillow Talk.
Her name makes me snicker every time.
-
Moondancer is a good one - I love celestial themed ponies! I've always really liked Applejack (though I also love the cereal lol). Another personal favorite is Sweet Summertime. I just think it sounds really nice. I love how simple and cute Bubbles is. Sky Dancer is the perfect name for a pegasus. Snuzzle is so adorable - I could totally see that on a real horse or pony. And what about Cupcake? We've got one in the 4 main generations!
-
I've always loved the simple names from early G1. Glory, Medley, Moondancer, Firefly, Twilight.... I guess the celestial names just sound more magical.
Other names that I like just because: Shenanigans, Fluttershy, Heartthrob, Truly, Wisteria, Magic Star, Bumblesweet, Lily Lightly, Sea Spray, Autumn Skye, Bright Eyes, Baby Tiddlywinks
I like the names that have a bit more thought to them and not necessarily an exact representation of their symbol. For example, I really like how "Glory" represents something about what it might feel like to see a shooting star. They could have just named her "Shooting Star." But that would have been so much more bland.
-
I'm going to echo something someone else said: a lot of the earlier names have a really simple, pretty ring to them - especially the unicorns and Pegasus. Glory, Twilight, Medley, Firefly. They all just seem magical. :)
I also just like names that just seem pretty, cute or clever. Off the top of my head:
Snuzzle
Butterscotch
Sunbeam
Truly
Wind Whistler
Posey
Shenanigans
Wondermint
Crowning Glory
-
Shenanigans! I forgot about that one...such a perfect pony name.
-
Starry Wings:). She has such a beautiful name! Applejack is another perfect name!
-
I think Moondancer is a fantastic pony name. Especially for a uni. I always liked Blossom too.
-
yes moondancer and sugarberry for me!
cotton candy too ^_^
-
I vote Moondancer and Shenanigans.
-
I agree with "Moondancer" definitely. That is beautiful. I always thought Cloud Dreamer was a nice name, too.
I love some of the newest ponies names, too. "Blossomforth" is really different sounding, and I very much enjoy the name "Lemony Gem". That name is fun to say.
-
Moondancer, Glory, SkyDancer those are the best for me! X
-
I also think G1 had some great, simple names. Moondancer, Glory, Firefly, and Sparkler, just to name a few.
Now, I like quite a few G3 name too, though for different reasons~ Wishawhirl, Toola Roola, Think a think a too, and the like are really fun to say<33
-
Gusty , gypsy , morning glory, peachy, :)
-
I've always loved the simple names from early G1. Glory, Medley, Moondancer, Firefly, Twilight.... I guess the celestial names just sound more magical.
Same here :)
G3 had really interesting and creative names. At least most of them-I never got the sence of one of two names.
One of the names in G4 that really impressed me was Lily Blossom.I gotta say it was very pretty too, especially for the time they took some G3 names (I'm not against that, don't understand me wrong)
-
The one that always made me laugh is streaky .... sounds like a pony who loves to run if the buff a lot.
-
Zipzee is loads of fun to say! XD I think names like Sunny Daze, Ringlet, Flower Bouquet, Cherries Jubilee, all sound very pony-ish to me. In a way they remind me of racehorse names, but girlier so I automatically think of My Little Pony. Ember's Dream doesn't sound so MLP to me- again, first thing that comes to mind: Race horse.
COME ON BABY EMBER'S DREAM YOUS GONNA GO TO THE RACES, SON. /abducts her from desk and tosses her in with my Breyer horse collection
-
I vote for Truly. I don't know why, but that name has always struck me as such a great name for a pony. Not just pretty, but smart too.
-
Bubblefish!
-
Big fan of the names Bay Breeze, Masquerade, and Frilly Flower
-
I know this is just a not official, but I love :muffin: Pony's fanon daughter's name, Dinky Doo. Another fan name I like is Dizzy Twister. It's so fun to say. As for an official name, I love, love, love "Sassaflash" (she's a g4 pegasus). Sugar Grape is another of my g4 faves. Firefly is a cool name, and add me on the Moondancer list. How about Wind Whistler? I like that one. :satisfied:
Edit: I forgot one of the best! G4 Pudding Pie!!! :frolic:
-
I like the early G1 names too. I just like the simpler names. Among my favorites are:
Gusty
Moondancer
Milky Way
Masquerade
-
Ive always loved Applejack and Moonstone, I named a couple pet lambs those names!
-
Lately my wife has been renaming all my ponies and ending each thing with "butt pony" like she calls Gypsy "diamond ring butt pony" since apparently her tambourines look like rings. I'm finding her names far more amusing and fitting than Hasbro names.
-
Ooh, nice topic! I was thinking about this the other day, and how we always seem to have the silly/stupid name threads instead of ones about the pretty names we love.
I love the celestial themes too! Moondancer, Twilight and Sunbeam are a few G1 favorites of mine.
My favorite G2 names are Ivy and Silver Rain.
For G3 I really like the name Silver Glow and Autumn Skye.
My favorite G4 names are Plumsweet and Flitterheart.
-
I think the Mountain Boys have the coolest names. Who wouldn't want a pony named Lightning or Tornado? XD
-
Oh BlackCurtains great point - although I think they missed out with Thundercloud...he was supposed to be called Storm not Thundercloud and that would have been an equally epic name for a pony,
-
Thundercloud was "supposed" to be called Storm? Do tell! Sounds like a good story. How do you know?
-
I like the short ones. No more than four syllables. Among those, these are some of my favourites: Mimic, Night Light, Starshine, Bom Bom, Candy...
-
Thundercloud was "supposed" to be called Storm? Do tell! Sounds like a good story. How do you know?
Because that is how he was offered to retailers in the UK product catalogues :) Thundercloud was Storm and Ice Crystal was Frosty. Both names were changed because of other HB products. The Snuzzle Pretty Parlour set also comes with "Storm" as one of the name tags - so obviously this went into production before the name change was made.
-
Another vote for Shenanigans. As soon as I heard that name I said "Oh, God, that is the perfect pony name." It's so quintessential of silly ponies!
-
Rosedust, Lightheart, Minty, Flitter Flutter, and Rarity.
-
Rosedust? That name is AWESOME!!! :iconclap: What does she look like?

Sweetberry/Sweet Berry is pretty to me. Forget-Me-Not is a bit of a mouthful, but I still think it's interesting. Feathermay is cute! And how about Skylark? Autumn Skye is also nice, though I find the 'e' to be unnecessary.
Actually her name is just Ember. Ember's Dream is the story she came with. ;D Ember is a nice name, too.
-
LOVE her cutie mark! :inlove:
-
No one has mentioned Floater as a name that is just very very silly, it makes me laugh. Bubblefish makes me laugh too but not as much as Floater.
The sea ponies always had great names! Also the rainbow ponies and original G1s were also named very well.
Magic Star
Truly
Wind Whistler
Paradise
Sunlight
Yanno the list could go on and on with great names they made for the ponies
