Title: Rehairing Method Poll
Post by: epona80 on October 28, 2012, 04:13:25 AM
So I use the needle (threading) method, but I was just wondering how many customisers actually use it. So having said all that, would you mind sharing with me what method you use?

I use both :)

I made my own rehairing tool with a cork and a needle and it works just fine. However, when the hair is too short to fold double (harvested mane) or when it need to be extremely secure, I still use the trusty threading method.

I used the needle method for a loooong time. Then I decided to give this rehairing tool a try and I LOVE IT! It's much faster!
But it also has flaws. More paint chipping and split plugrows. Also panic-attacs when the next to last needle breaks. ^^

I use the rerooting tool. I had a bit of trouble learning how to use it, but now that I know how, I love it! It's so fast. o.o

I started with the tool, and I don't think I could do it any other way if I tried. It's so fast!

I've only tried using the needle, can anyone recommend somewhere to get a rehairing tool?

I use a reroot tool, made it myself years ago, just need to change the needle now and then if it splits apart XD I made only 1 or 2 customs with needle method and got tired of it, too slow for me :)

I'm pretty sure I'm going to go through life using only the thread and needle method.  It's wreaking havoc on my right pinky, but plug tying and rerooting this way is grossly therapeutic to me.  Besides that, I'll usually finish a few ponies paint-work, then spend a couple hours one day tying plugs in front of the TV, then the next day spending a couple hours rerooting in front of the TV.  It's really the only times that I watch television, so it's kind of become something I look forward to.

I really like how secure the knots make it and, for whatever reason, I like seeing the neat appearance of them all lying next to each other inside the head.  Again - I have no reason why that's so important to me, as you should never see the inside of a custom's head, but I just like how neat and tidy it looks, lol.

Hum, I don't actually know how to answer this poll. I use a thin piece of wire that I fold in half, poke through the pony's head from the top through to the neck hole, and then I pull open the wire to make a loop. I put a hair plug I have knotted into the loop, close the loop and pull it through the head. I assume this is kind of like the needle and thread method? Not sure.

yeah that sounds like needle and thread method, only minus thread. =P and as for rehairing tools and where to get them, i got mine from Maniah on the forums. i love it and have yet to break a needle =] took me a few tries to get the feel for it and how to avoid unnecessary paint chipping but i dont know if ill ever go to the needle method now. maybe some day if im bored. tool is just so fast and easy tho. :silly:

Forever a user of needle/thread or floss. I never intend to switch....I actually have a rehairing tool which I used to poke at some deep pindot on a pony the other day.

I started with something similar to the needle and thread method and it drove me insane... 3 to 4 hours to rehair a pony >_< now I use the rehairing tool and bam 30 minutes for rehairing, I love it :3

Re-hair tool.  I need to remember to put a bandaid on my left index finger before starting.  I keep scuffing it up.

Thanks all so much for your help. When I rehair ponies it takes about 2 hours with the needle method, but after making 70 or so ponies....i'm starting to get over it. I supposed i freaked a bit cause i bought a rehairing tool and broke is straight away and broke the extra needle 5 seconds later.

So how wants to make eponna a how to video then eh???

Honestly, making replacement needles is VERY easy. All you do is get a sewing needle, take a pair of scissors or hemostats, and gently grip the very end of the tip, pulling on it slightly until it breaks off. I've never bought replacement needles before, and I never will -- there's just no point when it's so easy.

Needle and Thread ;)

I use a threading method, though no needle is involved. I acknowledge that it is the slower method, but I LOVE the results. Everything looks so nice and neat inside the head when I'm done. And there's no heavy smattering of glue in there which kinda grosses me out. I love that the hair is in there absolutely solid AND the hair can also be removed easily at any time should the need arise. Once while trying to glue a pony head on, the head fell off and some of the hair got glue in it. That hair was easily removed and rerooted,  no problem.

I bet that the needle method does look pretty, but my ADD won't let me even try it XD I used to break needles (which I cut diagonally with wire-cutters), but then I started using a small awl to prep the hole and make it a bit bigger. I don't remember the last time I broke a needle. I can rehair a pony in under an hour too :)

OMG on Darkhorse....I thought for sure you would use the tool.

Needle method for me =)

I've started with it about 7 years ago and I will end with it lol

Needle method here too. The reroot tool, frankly terrifies me (I hate ripped plugs) and as I can reroot most ponies in an hour anyway, I see no reason to swap.

I also lock/loop rehair, which looks like original hasbro rooting, but that takes me longer.

Did my first MLP reroot this weekend with the needle method. Do MH reroots the same way.

I exclusively use it. I hate how the needles in the hairing tool chew up the hairline of the pony and I hate having to replace the needles when they break.  Needle and fishing wire have been my staple for so long now that it takes me a couple of hours to do it that way, but three times as long with the hairing tool.

I will say that I do love the stabby needle part of my hairing tool. that's been fairly reliable in opening up some of those holes after I do an fbr or if a plug is just a wee bit big for the hole.

honestly I use both methods. Primarily, anymore, I use the tool. But when I have ponies with softer plastic, or tighter plug patterns, i use the thread method.

I use the Needle and wire method... One day I'll sit down with my rehairing tool and try to learn it.

I used to use the wire method (close to the thread method) and it took me DAYS to re-hair. Now I have switched to the re hair tool I get one done in about 2 hours or less even with my ADD self!! I won't go back. It takes practice, but once you get it---you got it! I use Pop-girls tool BTW.

O.o I can't say that I understand the complaints about the tool chewing up the ponies hair line. I rarely ever have a hole split into the next hole. And even on a pony with an FBR I have no problems with the tool. It doesn't scrape paint up unless I am careless when I pull it out of the head.

I don't know what needle size other folks offer, but I have tiny needles which I prefer even though they can't hold extra thick plugs. I also offer two larger sizes for the folks who wish to work with more hair at once.

Once you are used to the tool and learn to use it properly, needles rarely break. The only times I have broken needles in the past year have been when I was improperly using the tool to poke at things like glue, or my keyboard, or just randomly poking holes into a box >.> never when actually Rehairing.

I used to use the needle method or something similar but I rarely have the time for that and I find it very tedious. I think it used to take me a few days to finish rehairing a pony. That being said I do use the rehairing tool. I think it makes things a lot easier for me. :)
