Title: Equestria LA Anyone?
Post by: Snapdragon on October 27, 2012, 02:52:06 PM
Is anyone going to Equestria LA (EQLA) this coming weekend? (Nov. 3rd and 4th at the Anaheim Convention Center!) Since it's local and it's ponies, I'll be there, even if it can't compare to the MLPFair! (Oh, if only the Fair would come to the West Coast again ... hint hint!)

I'd love to meet fellow Arena-ites, maybe we could pick a day/time to meet up or something? :D

I didn't realize there was going to be a FIM fair in Anaheim (my home town). Hopefully I'll be able to attend.

I'm going!

It's going to be my first convention, too, so I'm especially excited!

By the way, the EQLA site has released a list of the vendors at the event!

Among the vendors are some big companies such as WeLoveFine and Enterplay, as well as semi-famous bronies such as John Joseco and HotdiggedyDemon!
Michelle Creber(voice of Apple Bloom and singing voice of Sweetie Belle) also has her own booth for some reason!

Hotdiggetydemon? Huh, who knew? Excited for WLF, Michelle Creber and Enterplay, though!! :D Maybe we'll have an exclusive card?! *dies of glee*

How do you get to be a famous brony? No actually scratch that...I dont want to know :P

Sounds like a massive event though - I hope you guys have a great time!

I'm going both days! I'm so excited, it'll be my first pony convention and the first convention I get to go to that isn't Comic Con (Comic Con's great, but variety is the spice of life after all). I'd love to meet some Arena members there. I won't be wearing anything extremely noticeable, likely just a Ditzy shirt and necklace of my ponysona. But it would be awesome if there was a time set up where we could meet.

I was unfortunately only able to get sunday badges (They sold out of 2-day and saturday badges the day right before I bought mine. Talk about bad luck!)

Hopefully I won't miss much, since most of the panels are being repeated on the sunday.

By the way, are you guys also going to the BronyCon Documentary screening on the sunday?
Title: Re: Equestria LA Anyone?
Post by: Zenobiaa on October 28, 2012, 03:37:08 PM
That's unfortunate. Well you'll still have fun, I'm sure!

I wish I was, but I'm not going to the screening. It would've been too much on top of the admission/hotel/etc.

Yeah, I'm ... not impressed with the Bronycon Documentary, to begin with? And asking us to pay $100 to essentially be a test-audience (AKA, they usually pay YOU to watch their unfinished work  )? No thanks! (Thankfully, I think 'rush' tickets are only $20.)

I'm sorry you won't be able to go the first day, Bread! Maybe we can schedule our Arena-playdate on Sunday! ^_^

I'm not sure you guys know this, but the documentary screening added the option for $50 pre-sale tickets if you can't afford/don't want a $100 ticket.

I guess they realized that $100 is a bit too much :P
Title: Re: Equestria LA Anyone?
Post by: hathorcat on October 29, 2012, 03:22:10 PM
Wait...$100 to see a pre release doc? Lol...as Snap says normally you get paid to sit on these things!

Is this the first showing of the documentary?
Title: Re: Equestria LA Anyone?
Post by: Zenobiaa on October 29, 2012, 04:18:34 PM
Paying the extra $50 to get the more expensive ticket only gets you a Blu Ray copy of it instead of a digital copy. Not entirely worth it imo.

@hathorcat, yes, this will be the first screening.

Also, I have a question. I could've sworn when we bought tickets that it said kids 13 and under got in free, and they'd get a free ticket at the convention (I even showed this to my dad when he asked if we should buy my non-pony fan 11 year old brother a ticket in case we cant find him a sitter) but I just checked the website and now apparently it's only 10 and under? Did we both not read it right or did it really change?

I know that's what it says now, but I thought for sure it said otherwise when we registered in September. Maybe Im just imagining things.

The EQLA site has now posted info about getting autographs!

They're pricing vouchers at $20 each (except vouchers for Lauren Faust, which are $30), and they're handing out a limited supply of free vouchers for people who show up early.

I don't know how much vouchers usually cost, but $20 per seems a bit pricey (especially since I hope to get autographs from 8 of the special guests)

I unfortunately don't think I can get Lauren Faust's autograph, though, since she's only at the con on saturday.
However, she's also going to be at the documentary screening on sunday, which I'm attending.
Hopefully I can get an autograph from her after the Q&A that takes place after the screening. Do you guys think I might be able to do that?

Oh, I didn't think the vouchers were for free autographs; it looks to me like they might be vouchers for a spot in line? I'm not sure, it's all very unclear.

Seems pricey to me, too, especially since it's a pony-specific con, and you can't really expect folks to drop $100 just to get everyone's autograph. I'm very disappointed, I had been hoping to get some ponies signed, but I just can't afford that much. :(

No. All Pony conventions are hours and hours north of me or hours and hours south of me. I live on the west coast but I don't get the glam of the the west coast.

I hope you all have fun though! Still, I am not too sure I would want to go. It all seems about money. And well...all my spare money, I spend on ponies. Not some person's signature. I know they are celebrities and neat people but they are just people...

Autograph prices are normally set by those autographing not by the Con itself and I have a feeling $20-30 was about what they were at BronyCon if I remember the information I read correctly.

Personally for what these are - Cons for My Little Pony as Snapdragon says - I find the prices that seem to be getting charged at these events just a tiny bit expensive.

Last time I was at London Comic Con [and autographs are traditionally much more expensive over here for US stars] autographs for people like Gillian Anderson were in the $60 region however I am thinking Gillian Anderson is a bigger star than just about anyone [save John de Lancie] who will appear at Pony Convention. In the US for big name Con stars like Kate Mulgrew or Levar Burton or Hayden Panettiere autographs are $30-40. Heck Patrick Stewart and William Shatner autorgraphs are traditionally in the $75 region. I honestly would have thought prices at a Pony Con would be less. But then again in order to get these people to attend this is probably the price they are setting to make it worth their while.

I'm going! We'll be driving up to eight hours to get there, depending on traffic and stops, but nothing stops an intrepid group of people with a minivan and an artist alley table!

I had originally planned to cosplay Rarity, but unless a miracle happens, my wig will NOT arrive in time-- there were problems in getting it ordered, and... well, I guess these things happen.

Anyway, I'm a 'support staff artist' at Tinker Tots' table, so that's where I'll be much of the time. And I'll probably be VERY shy-- I was hoping to have a cosplay ready to go, because I have a much easier time being social and outgoing/energetic when I'm in costume. But I do look forward to talking ponies some. There's no place local (hence my family being willing to drive halfway down the state) to go to brony meets, and not many cons in general that are within easy distance for me, let alone MLP-specific.

I will probably pass on all autograph opportunities... I think I'd rather spend my money in the dealers' hall/artists' alley and... I don't know, cross my fingers for next year?

Hey-- this is a long shot, but do any local folks know of good veg-friendly gluten-free dining in the area? Been trying to research it online.

Oh hey, gluten free!! That's my family too! (Not so much vegetarian, but gluten free for sure!) I dunno about the Anaheim area, but I know Disneyland has been really stepping up its game with having gluten-free options; they even have gluten free pizzas and burgers and stuff! :D

I know PF Chang's has a great gluten-free menu, and Ruby's has gluten-free burger buns (so you could get a veggie patty!), but other than that I'm a little unsure.

If anyone would like to come, I'm giving a presentation on Saturday (10:20AM) about rehairing and customization! :) Come on by!!

By the way, Enterplay has quietly announced that the Ditzy Doo promo will be available at Equestria LA (as a bonus when you buy a poster)

The announcement is quiet in that it's a bit subtle; the Ditzy Doo picture on Enterplay's site previously had the caption "only at New York Comic Con", but now it has the caption "only at Equestria LA".

Hopefully they'll give out some other promos too (maybe Pinkie and AJ?).

Make sure you guys tell me all about your saturday experience!

Hope you guys manage to get one!

Sneaky Enterplay! Awesome news for those of us who couldn't go to NYCC because of the being on the other side of the country thing though XP

Well, A) I had a wonderful time, but...

I did not get my hands on that particular promo! Aw, well... I picked up the AJ card for my brother because he was stuck at the table, and then someone came around to make sure all the vendors got a card, so I got his!

I am sure I came home with enough swag, anyway...

LOL!! Guuuuuuurl I do what I WANT! :P

Well, from my side of things - it was actually super fun! After hearing horror stories from Everfree Northwest and Canterlot Gardens (Bronies being awful, throwing around slurs and harassing people, someone even got choked!), I was prepared for the worst, but it actually was pretty awesome! There was a lot of cult-ish "YOU are the greatest fandom, YOU made this all happen!," but aside from disturbing similarities to the Moonies, it was good! (It was made better that, every time a Brony would ask a ridiculous/NSFW question in the panels, me and my friend would look at each other and gag.)

I gave the Arena a big shout-out in my panel, hee hee, I was like, "if you wanna know how to rehair, just go to the customs forum here and read tutorials!" so hopefully the people who came to my panel will be showing up here! XD And I even threw in a warning, like, "DO NOT bait the ponies you find in your mom's basement, I will have collectors come beat me up if you bait a Mimic!!" Although I ran out of time at the end, and things got hurried along, hopefully it wasn't too much of a mad rush and made sense to the folks I was chatting with. ;)

I bought WAY too much stuff and had a lot of fun - but there wasn't a lot to do, beyond cruising the dealer's hall (it wasn't super big, so that went by quick) and watching panels, and sometimes the panels weren't great. And unfortunately, they had one NSFW panel, and I just - don't know why they had it? I saw tons of little kids, and I really hope none of them wandered in there for that part. :/ But other than that, I had fun, and there was even a G1 display! I chatted with a lot of customizers and artists (for lack of anything better to do, LOL!), and I met up with some friends, and just generally had a great weekend!

Oh, and I bought a mint Mimic with her backcard for $26, but no biggie. ;)

I had a lot of fun as well!

The people there were really nice, and a lot of them had interesting costumes. One person's costume looked like a walking fausticorn plushie. There was also a guy dressed as a muscular white pegasus with tiny wings, who everyone seemed to call snowflake. XD

The panels, especially the voice actors' and show developers', were really fun as well. Tara Strong's twitter jokes and sneaky plushie-grabbing ways never seem to get old.  :P

At various points during the con, the panel room's speakers would start blasting gangnam style and everyone joined in on the dance (one instance of this happened near the end of the VA panel.) I'm pretty sure most of the sudden dancing was recorded on the livesteam, so you guys can watch them on the recording once it gets uploaded to youtube.

I unfortunately didn't bring a lot of money, and my mom wouldn't lend me much, so the only things I was able to buy were a set of walmart posters for $10, a hat for my sister for $20, and an autograph from Meghan McCarthy (although I had my mom get that for me). I'll make sure to bring a lot more money next time, especially for autographs, since my mom is so unwilling to buy some.  :P
I did get a few freebies, though: a seeds of kindness pin, 3 applejack promos (my mom and sister each got one and gave them to me), and an enterplay lanyard.

My mom had to drive my sister home around 3:00 or 4:00 (so she could do some homework). That ended up taking us a couple hours, so I unfortunately missed both the charity auction and the closing ceremony. ( I later found out that my sister didn't even do her homework when she got home, so I missed the last events for nothing! )

By the time my mom got us back to the con, it was about 6:00, so we headed for the documentary screening. Due to traffic, though, we missed the first twenty minutes (I'm just going to blame that on my sister :P ). I was able to understand the documentary from the point we started at, though.
Interestingly, the documentary wasn't actually finished yet (it had placeholders for animations and John De Lancie's interview), though from what I saw, it was quite good ( especially John De Lancie's cute little songs about the fandom ). The crowd was cheering every time they saw someone they recognized, such as sethisto, laserpon3, manliest brony, purple tinker, and thelivingtombstone. There was also a moment where a guy in the documentary was convinced to become a brony, and lots of cheering came from that.

I overall had a fantastic time! I really need to go to more of these cons!

Woooaaah, where was this at? You lucky duck XP

I loved it! I didn't catch all the panels I wanted to go to, since for some reason the ones I wanted to see were ALL on Saturday and I wanted to have time to walk around the stalls before much of the good stuff got looted, but I did see the rehairing presentation Snapdragon put on X3 (I was going to say something to you but I pulled a Fluttershy at the last minute :x I was the girl with the purple glasses and MUFFINS shirt if you're curious though XP).

I liked the references to G1 the convention had. There were pictures of G1s taped to the registration tables and a display with a nice collection of G1s (Mimic and Flutter ponies with wings xOx). The stalls had lots of tempting goodies as well, I would've bought lots more if only money grew on trees. But I still got a fair amount of stuff (my favorite is probably the little peanut that someone painted to look like :muffin: Pony <3).

I really wished I could have taken pictures though. I forgot my phone so I told my brother to take pictures (my mom wanted him to send her some anyway) but of course he didn't do much more than snap one of a coloring book I bought anyway. I didn't talk to too many people either but I did find it amusing to see people trying to talk ponies with my non-brony/pony fan dad.

Eeehehehe, you remember the G1 display? Apparently she was looking to sell some of them, but she didn't mention it or make it really public. And so at the end I was like, "Uh, how much you want for Mimic?" and she said, "oh, um, is $10 too much?"

@_@

I talked her UP because I didn't want to rip her off QUITE so badly, and she refused the $30 I tried to push on her, LOL.

But yayyyy, thank you for coming to my panel!! I hope it made sense? And wasn't too frenetic? XD I think I may have recognized your shirt, but now I can't remember what your face looked like! Dang!! But thanks for coming anyway! If you come to the spring con, we'll have to say hi! :D We can go in steps, LOL! First con, stare at each other creepily, second con, say hi then run away, third con, share a sentence... :lmao:

Really? Boy I wish I'd known that, I was drooling over half the ponies there XP Actually I didnt even get to see whose display it was. Every time I passed by no body was there save the people looking at it. I thought it was just part of the con if that makes sense. That was such a stroke of luck for you if you actually had to talk someone up for Mimic (Maybe Mimic was happy you told everyone not to cut her up XD)
