So basically what the title says. I am living in Japan and working as an alt (Assistant language teacher). I am right by Tokyo. There is this place called Broadway in Nakano where I hunt for ponies. I have not been there for awhile so thought I would go today not expecting to find anything of course.
So after an hour of looking guess what I find behind a display case? A takara pony! In the package with all her accessories, the white one with the pink hair. With a 2000 yen ($20) price tag. So of course I started freaking out. Basically jumping and screaming in the store. I rush to tell the guy I want to buy it when he says its not for sale! I tearfully ask him not for sale at all and he replies yes.
I feel like sobbing now.

If it's not on sale why on earth does it have a price tag? That sucks for you, I'm so sorry.

Well, go ask him again soon; he might change his mind. Or ask him why it's not for sale; maybe it's already sold, or maybe he wanted to keep it for display.
Heck, make an offer for it! I'm sure it's worth more to you and other English-speaking collectors than it is to him. So offer more than he would think it was worth; that will still be a lot less than it's worth here in the States.
Everything's negotiable (well, usually). So go negotiate! The first answer isn't necessarily the final answer.

I am guessing it had a price tag because someone brought it for the store and then put it on display to get people to come in.
I am not giving up on it though! I had a friend with me who can speak a little Japanese. Better than mine anyway and he was translating for me. I did want to try negotiating but the guy seemed very firm that it was not for sale. He told us the reason why but neither one of us could understand.
I want to see if I can get someone who can speak Japanese to come with me and try again.

Keep working on him, he should let you have it for the right amount. I do love Nakano though found some great stuff in there. As you are in Japan check out http://2000collectabletoys.com/ they only sell vintage USA toys but have a large amout of MLP. Its on the outskirts of Tokyo. I have a feeling its only a couple stops from Nakano but cant remember.

O_o; Oh my, I must be a dummy. I don't know a White one with pink.... Are you sure it's not Yellow and Pink? At least take a picture when you go back.
I think if you get her, be prepared to pay a higher price tag-- not $20 :) They aren't that clueless about them NOR their price.

oh it is probably the yellow and pink one. She had a dress with the red p on it. I was just in shock to notice much of the details I think. I will def take a picture I just did not have my camera with me.

Is the store called something like Nakanoten? Is it this one? http://www.mandarake.co.jp/information/buy/nkn/toy/
Seems like someone at the store is interested in buying them, rather than selling, so maybe that's why it's for display only (assuming it's the same one, but it seems likely. As we know there aren't many of these around)
Edit: Oh, yeah. You even said it was in Nakano! X)

In the future, I would always play it cool when you see a pony you want in the store. I hope you can get it!

I didn't see any Takaras when I went to Nakano Broadway last summer! You got lucky!
Check in some of the stores that buy back vending machine capsule toys. They have a ton of those in Nakano Broadway but huge malls tend to have them. There's an antique toy store there as well but I didn't see any ponies, they might have gotten some since I was last there.
I went into Mandarake but I didn't know they bought back Takaras! I only saw action figures like Transformers and video games, it's where I got my Japanese copies of Golden Sun 1 and 2 MIP.

I'd just leave him alone. Like SpikeTheDragon said, it's probably in the window to help communicate that whoever owns it is interested in buying more. "Not for sale" means not for sale, not "keep asking me until I say yes".

Okay so I went back today with Becca. We talked to the guy and found out the problem was that the pony belonged to one of the staff who just wanted to display it in the store. Becca told the guy I would pay more so he went to ask the lady who owned it. He comes back and says so how does 5000 yen sound? $50.
I about lost it then but I made it out of the store long enough with the Takara to completely freak out. I think people were staring at me and I remember Becca telling me to breathe.
I got it I got it I got it. I own a Takara pony!!!!!!!!!!!!! And its in the package. I feel like hyperventilating again. I never ever thought I would own one!!!!! I have been under a lot of stress since I moved to Japan and this seriously made my year. I own a Takara!!!!!!!!
Sorry for the reaction but my roommates have been teasing me with how worked up I have been. I just keep telling them they dont understand. lol

MASSIVE congratulations!!!!! That was the same Takara MLP which was the first one I laid my hands on a couple of years back (although mine was without its box), I totally remember the feeling back then! It was amazing to finally hold something that you had yearned for for so long, but never thought you'd ever have the chance to own! And for only 5000 yen!!! You are an extremely lucky person!!! 5000 Yen is more like 70$-80$ but it is still an awesome find! I am a bit envious really, since I went to Nakano regularly for a year and never saw a Takara, only overpriced western G1. Dammit and my Japanese would've been good enough too! Oh well! Huuuuuge congrats to you :D

Ha ha, I think it's OK, Sailor! I'm jealous too, and I was cheering for her! Plus, I know tebrighteyes personally from back in the day; we were flea market ponyhunting rivals for years! Heck, I'm still jealous that she found Rapunzel there! I think it's normal human nature to be a little envious over things like this.
But I'm still happy for you too, brighteyes, and I'm sure Sailor is too!
