Title: Mustache fad, can anyone explain?
Post by: cuddlebuggy on October 11, 2012, 07:31:37 AM
Love them or hate them, mustaches are popping up everywhere. Hulalei is 10 and has a mustache mood necklace and glow in the dark mustaches on her walls.
I don't mind it much as she's just a kid but where the heck did this fad come from? Google is no help for once!

I'm really confused why it doesn't die out. I swear it's been a good 2 years since I started seeing mustache junk.

It just ... happened one day.  I admit, I enjoyed drawing mustaches on the inside of my finger and taking pics with it held up under my nose.  XD

My male friends grow moustache for every November and call it 'Movember'. I'm not quite sure what's the story behind it though.

My dad has had a moustache since I was little (and I am old now) but I bought him a Moustache Mug for his Birthday one year.  And he still has it till this day!!

Hmmm...I'll have to go call him and tell him he is finally in style

I tend to see the popularity stemming from an attitude of, "Look, I'm so mature that I have facial hair!"  from the younger crowd.  After awhile, this turned into a trend featuring merchandise and other things.  Now it's cool to toss a moustache onto something.  *shrug*

Most adults I meet who are capable of growing their own moustache either shave it, or do something really spectacular with it, like in the Beard Championships.  :)

Those silly youngun's!  What will they think of next?

I'm an adult. I think it stems from thinking of objects as people/faces. As soon as I got my Cube, I was like "he needs a mustache below his nose." I happen to get compliments and smiles all the time.  I didn't realize the Arena is full of mustache-haters! My husband has a badass mustache that I pretend my ponies eat as hay.

Over here there was/is a moustache-trend in support of prostate-cancer.

This :)

It's gotten more popular in recent years and people are just starting it earlier than November. Here's a Wiki article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Movember) about it. I've already taken a new FB profile pic for Movember but I'm waiting for November to actually come around before I change it

Mo-vember I believe is for male cancer awareness.

Where did my post go?

Anyway, it is for Movember, as already mentioned. People just start it early which is why you notice it in October.

I have no idea but I don't get it and think it's kind of silly.
I find myself getting annoyed at a lot of the trends, fashion or otherwise, that are big with my age group. Calling things "ninja" (OMg I just fell I'm lyk so nInJa LOL), yelling "fail", mustaches on EVERYTHING... They're over used, even at my tiny school. >_<

Ugh, mustaches.. don't get it, don't like them.. at all. My dad has had one for pretty much ever, at least since I have been alive. Now my husband keeps trying to convince me to let him shave in a handlebar, which to me is the epitome of creepiness. Can't happen, I'm already not a fan of facial hair and any type of mustache is a no no.

and Movember is held all over the world in honor of "male health"-awareness, mainly prostate cancer.

Yay!
We wrapped it up.
Awesome!

I noticed it in 2003 or so with weddings and other events with formal photography like proms and family portraits.  Everyone was having the wedding party take fun pictures where they all had mustaches or quirky engagement pictures with both bride and groom holding them on a stick.  It was considered offbeat back then.  My friend did this with her bridesmaids. Since then the idea has exploded and now they are everywhere.  I'd say it is mainstream now ( and so are chucks in formal events).

I like well groomed mustached men.

Oh and I think the popularity came from trying to have a hipster offbeat look.
Title: Re: Mustache fad, can anyone explain?

I thought it came from the "Like a Sir" meme.

I thought it came from the "Like a Sir" meme.

Nope!  That came out in 2011 and the mustash fad has been around a good long while.  But the meme probably increased the popularity.

Movember is a good idea for a very good cause.  Now, if I could only talk my brother into shaving off his awful beard for the other 11 months of the year...

i must admit, that i have fallen victim to this trend. i bought 2 packages of fake mustaches to put on my wall, and a braclette that says "i <3 mustaches) and has a mustache on it. i think it all started with that image "like a sir" i think its cute though.

i think themustache, like the hat or monocel, "sir-ify" everything.
you put a mustache on thecar, suddenly its is sir car. you put a tophat on a computer, it is sir computer, and so on..
i also think they are cute, and i don´t think of me as a hipster too. XD

A friend of mine did the Movember thing last year, and got people to sponsor him to grow a wacky beard of their choosing, in order to raise money for a prostate cancer charity. He did really well. :)

As for the trendy jewellery... well it's like most memes, isn't it? Harmless but pointless.  ;)

Post by: MyHatBarks on October 12, 2012, 09:10:21 AM
I didn't much care till they popped up EVERYWHERE. My cousin was obsessed as well as most people around me. I'm just tired of seeing them all over everything, everywhere. My cousin even got three different mustaches tattooed on her first three fingers. Ugh. I tried so hard to talk her out of that. I know she won't care about mustaches in 2 years, but she will have them forever.

I think probably on the side or top, so you could hold them up to your nose in pictures, like people do with pen-drawn mustaches.

I'm with myhatbarks though! I'm tired of seeing them everywhere!
I think Movember is a good cause though. Also No-shave November is funny, which is the same thing but without the charity. I think I might participate and not shave and see if I can grow a cool mustache :P

I blame Steampunk.

Seriously though. Guys. You do NOT look 'hotter' (except Johnny Depp) with a mustache. Also, I don't like kissing a guy with a mustache (I keep telling my hubby this and he keeps not listening), the hairs go up your nostrils and it feels like you are mashing your face into a brush. Guys, you will get more lovin' if you shave!

Heck we even quote quotes here though it can take a bit of doing.

My hubby had one it is in all our wedding pictures, we went on the honey moon he tried to snorkel with it and too much water leaked in.  So he went in and shaved it off and it has not been back since.  He is much sexier with out.

I do think it is neat that gents grow them to support Man's Cancer issues.  That is cool.

Post by: gypsyunicorn on October 17, 2012, 08:52:45 AM
ok so I am noticing the moustache on stuff...like in the mall random stores have a classic moustache just on shirts for girls to wear
and I saw some braclets with random moustaches
and one said " the moustache made me do it"
etc
the happy smile face has sported a moustache
so now I feel older then I feel and outdated as aperson because I feel like i am the last to know why moustache? I mean Pringles sports this moustache...is it a Pringles thing?

We we're talking about this recently. XD
I'm not really sure, moustaches seem to have been popular for a few years now which is strange since most trendy stuff died out pretty quickly.
I think it's honestly just one of those random trendy things thats popped up and doesn't seem to have a real origin.

*flails* the mustache craze is getting ridiculous. I would've found it pretty awesome a few years ago when I was 12/13.. but now, there's just nothing new about it when it's on every tee in every store (both on and off the high street).. the lack of individuality makes me so sad. >.<

Thought it was a hipster thing at first (it was featuring heavily on tumblr at a point).. but now it's mainstreamed out.

I don't like them showing up everywhere. I don't have a problem with moustaches (though I prefer a face without), and at first I just laughed at this whole fad, but now that they are basically everywhere they are getting a little annoying.
