Title: Do you regret buying sometimes?
Post by: InkyMilk on October 01, 2012, 10:22:47 PM
So,I've never been much of a collector with the mindset of buying something I don't necessarily 100% omgtotallyNEED simply in order to complete a set of some sort. I'm trying very hard to reduce my amount of clutter so I put a lot of thought into any new item I bring home. Especially since ponies aren't the only toys I collect. But tonight, I'm not really sure why, but I think I got into some sort of freaky weird WANT mode and purchased a couple of MLP children's book when I visited the bookstore. I know it's only like $10 and they are pretty cute and I like looking at them, but I just feel so...bad. I don't know why, like buying children's book crosses the line into total, I don't know, weirdness? I still have the receipt and I thought I'd just return them, but then for some reason I don't want to. I like them. They're cute to look at and one has stickers...that I'll also probably never use. Am I stupid/crazy/weird for buying kids' books for myself? Should I return them? I feel so embarrassed, this is probably the first time I don't want my family to know what it is I bought.

I buy G1 pony books whenever I see them!
The artwork in some of them is irresistible!

I've regretted some of my pony purchases but mine were all monetarily based:  I was spending most of my free money on ponies when I could have spent it on other things I could use, like clothes, or RRSP's etc.

As for your books, I love kid's books.  I have lots and I have no kids, I have nieces and nephews that don't get to read MY books when they visit, they have their own.  If you're regretting the books that you really like I think you may need to try to figure out why.  Do you have your own kids (I'm new here if that's common knowledge), if so maybe you're thinking they should have been for them.  Maybe something to do with how it might reflect on your reading tastes?  I don't think any of that should be cause for concern, myself.  I've just completed my Education degree and my favourite part of being the in the Grade 1 and 2 classrooms during student teaching was being able to read the children's books.  Perhaps it's a matter of the money spent or value of the item vs the money spent.  As far as books in the collection, they're flat/thin and don't take up much room so don't create a lot of clutter.  Once you can pinpoint where the discomfort is coming from you can make a more informed decision about whether you want to keep them or not.

I hope that helps in some way and if not, ignore it, I don't have a psych degree or anything  :), I just know that pinning down where the feeling comes from has helped me in the past.  I also recommend waiting a day or two before you take them back to see how you feel about them, do they still make you smile.

I have a decent collection of vintage children's books and coloring books and I would never turn down a g1 book.

I wouldn't feel badly about anything you buy as long as you a) have the money to spend and b) enjoy the purchase.  If you like them, I wouldn't worry too much about what anyone else thinks.  Children's books are cute, they have a deep sentimental value to me and they add variety to the collection.  Not everything you buy has to be purposeful.  :)

That said, if you feel really bad about it, I'd put them aside for now and think on it for a little while.  If you still don't want to keep them, return them after a few days.  But if you want to keep them, I think you're in good company.  :)

I always feel a little bit of fleeting guilt because ultimately I'm spending money on little plastic horses that do nothing but chill in my room, but I keep my budget reasonable and I've never found myself in a jam because of it.  They do bring me happiness, and are a great stress reliever just by being there,  its just harder to quantify in a practical way, like video games or clothes.

So if you are indeed enjoying the books, you have every freedom to brush that guilt and embarrassment away, don't make yourself feel bad by judging yourself on the standards of others.  :frolic:

I've never regretted buying G1's, but I regret getting G3's. So I'm thinking of just selling them.

I suggest just set the book aside for now, you may just have a bit of guilt. If you really don't want it, then you can either just take it back or sell it. :)

I do sometimes. Buyers remorse is a hard thing to stomach, but omg, I love my ponies and monster high dolls ;-; I'd rather find a way to live with the guilt

Well, you know. Some people collect stamps, we collect plastic horses. You shouldn't feel bad about your hobby, since it's pretty typical human behavior. There is of course a difference between collecting and hoarding, much like there is difference between normal usage of alcohol and alcoholism. But as long as your collecting doesn't keep you from doing other stuff you want to do or affect your relationships I think you haven't crossed the line.

Edit. My god my spelling is bad today.

There are times where I have oodles of stuff in hand and ask myself, "What the heck am I doing?". My justification is "Because I like it and it's fun.".

I'm 26 and I bought the coloring books myself, only because Ditzy's on 'em, but still enjoy yourself.

The people who mind don't matter, and the people who matter don't mind and several other bumper stickers.

I once spent 60 dollars on a lot of 50 G3s, a couple of G1s and G2s, plus 40 fakies.

I'm....not really sure why since I don't really care for G3s and there's no way I could make a profit from selling them.

All the time. :( I am seriously stingy with my money and when I do spend it I always feel bad :( Unless it's something for people other than myself. For example I waaaant LalaLoopsy dolls like no other and I haven't bought many and the ones I did buy I regret x-x I love them sooo much but I barely have space for my ponies D: Much less Lalaloopsies :<

I have a whole bunch of Lion King books on my desk shelf as well as a few other kinds of children's books. A couple are an FiM activity set, a giant FiM coloring book and a smaller Jumbo FiM coloring book so no you're not weird at all for buying children's books for yourself. You're just adding to your MLP collection^^

I don't think I have any regrets about buying a specific pony. When I go into the doll room now though and realize how large the herd has grown so quickly, it's like where did all of you come from?

I have serious nerve damage in my right hand from a car accident, I can still move my hand but the fine motor skills can be a bit iffy sometimes as I still can't really feel anything. My physical therapist had recommended coloring in coloring books in the past to help me relearn control of my fine motor skills so that's my personal justification for the MLP/Batman/Care Bears/Strawberry Shortcake etc coloring books

I think I've been on both sides I regret buying some things and at the same time I regret not buying others when I had the chance.

Put it aside there's nothing wrong with returning it, later if you feel that's what you really need to do.

I hear ya! For years I stayed away from ebay but then I found something from my childhood that got ruined so I went on ebay to find a replacement... now I can't stay away. >_> Why is bidding so addictive!?! Ugh I bought a ton of stuff I don't even need really, and my parents are trying to get crud OUT of our house. XD;;

Ah well. Ya only live once, I guess?

Do you usually feel guilty about your pleasures, or is this something new?  If it's a change I'd suggest that you consider what's different.  What was the catalyst.  Once you identify the source then I think you'll have an easier time deciding what to do about it.

I do, but it usually takes awhile, sometimes months later when I look at my collections and question myself as to why I have/need/got what I did. I'm trying to "refine" the collections now, because a lot of what I had was just cheap toys. I need to conserve room, and I just want to have "the best" of each thing. Quality over quantity for me now!

I know I feel bad about it sometimes. I have been buying ponies like crazy sometimes. I enjoy cleaning them, and my husband says it is good that I found something I enjoy to do, but I have always felt guilty of buying myself anything, even clothing. I always feel there is something better I could be buying for my hubby or kids or the house.

There was one time I did go overboard and I regretted it a little. However sometimes I don't buy for myself. That being said I really don't collect because of space or I would have a smaller collection. I think it boils down to if your happy if your not happy with your books then wait awhile and then see if you want to get rid of them. There is nothing wrong with having a little bit of something that makes you happy if it doesn't take over your life.

Hmmm...I dont know if regret is the right word sometimes a little buyer's remorse...I have 3 Lullabye Nurserys due to accidental ebay purchases!

I think its natural to sometimes say "ooops maybe I shouldnt" - if it rolls off your back and you go back to normal in a few hours then its nothing to worry about - if it drags at you, then I agree sometimes you need to re-evaluate.

I almost sorta regret overspending to get the FS Cadance and Shining Armour from America because I didn't know if they're be released in Australia. Turns out they go on sale tomorrow for $28. Well, I got mine early! :P

I also regret not buying a giant blank pony project because I didn't think I could justify spending that much at the time, I wish I could go back in time and throw money at my screen!  >_<

no.
I do not spend an excessive amount on fun things- I make enough money to pay my bills, save, AND buy ponies. I love every pony purchase I make. It makes me happy, and when they get here, they make me happy. I never considered myself a 'pony crazy' person...until this year. Seriously, between all the new merch, the fair, a pony meet, and converting friends into bronies....I am one of those 'pony obsessed' people. And you know what? I love it. It makes me so happy.

I never regret buying G1s

But I have regretted a couple of times I have bought a G2 or a G3 from fleamarket if no G1s were available.

Yes I feel regrets with anything I collect. I never spend money that would keep us from having food or pay bills ect. In the end though ultimately I've spent money that could be used on something else. I know it's good to buy things for yourself, but sometimes I feel like collecting is overkill. Do I really need over 300 model horses? How much money would we have if I hadn't bought those guys?

I have a feeling someday there will come a point where I sell my collections of things but not today. >_<

I do, but then I remind myself that I love my ponies, and that I keep them from cluttering or collecting dust, and that they make me happy. Some one once said "any time you enjoyed wasting wasn't wasted at all". I think that applies to money to. I however, wont be buying ponies for awhile, because I do need to save.

I have had this feeling time to time. But then I go crazy and spend spend spend. I do not feel bad when I have the cash and money in pay pal for the pony or ponies. But when I have to use a CC to buy then I start to feel bad. I have charged alot of my CC this year for breyer horses and now ponies. I have sold off alot of them breyers also so I could put that money toward ponies. But now when I look at my CC bill it makes me a little upset at myself. How could I of spent this much and have not very much to show for it. Well I do, but I see the $$$$ signs and get mad!!!!! :(   I have taken a few things back to the store that I bought and did not feel good about it.

Yes we do only live once and need to enjoy our lives.

Pony shopping is going to slow down for the rest of the year. And going to try very hard to only buy with money that I have and not charge!

InkyMilk, with regards to buying children's books, I don't think there's anything to feel guilty about.  I had a whole collection of children's books before I ever became a mom. :) If you enjoy something, it's not bad for you, and you aren't foregoing other responsibilities because of it, I say go for it!

Thanks you guys for your responses :) I don't have any children of my own and I certainly didn't overspend or go into any kind of debt by purchasing these things. I actually think one reason I gave myself the go ahead to get them is because I actually have more saved than I thought I did. I guess with actual ponies, I've been collecting them for so long I've gotten over the stigma of them being 'children's toys'. But with books, it's just a different matter, you know? I've been gifted MLP coloring books before and that didn't make me feel bad, maybe cause they were gifts I suppose.I've still been thinking about these ones I just bought though, and I think I may return one and keep the other that has the stickers.

But I'm really glad that even if I did keep them both or even buy more someday, that it's not considered a bad thing :) I'm okay with being 'weird', but there's a line were good weird turns into bad weird and I don't know how such a line is defined.

The only times I regret buying is when I get something online and they show up in local stores just a few days later.

It gets even worse if they're supposed to be exclusives.

I did feel kinda weird when I purchased my first ponies, but it was less than 10 dllrs so It went away ,Then I took to the next level ,ordered from hasbro.com and ordered all the ones that were available, the princess cadance was so big when i got my order,I felt very weird for wanting to keep it, and at one point I was thinking to give it away to my niece or return it, but  I still have it and I bought the new white Celestia as well. so I know people will say and think whatever they want and assume more than what it is,but I'm having fun and enjoying the collection to the max,I just started collecting them last July and I have no regrets now,but do every now and then have buyers remorse :), but not enough to take them back,I have always liked toys too much  and whoever wants to judge ,they can judge all they want :) !
I feel proud of my collection
I usually use my miles to travel somewhere but this year I have been dealing with health issues so the buying spree and and the store trips hunting for ponies has helped a lot,I have fun and I get out more, the miles paid for a lot of my ponies :)
425 dollars so far :)
I think I have spent around 1000 dllrs,I think is the best money spent:)
best therapy ever  if you ask me :)
but I'm all caught up on ponies and playsets :)
just one more carriage !!
and it will be a done deal for me .
Hope you enjoy the books

It's funny... I feel more weird about buying toys than children's books.  To each his own guilt, lol.  Also, I have put our family in a tight financial spot because of ponies, so now I am in the awkward and embarrassing position of needing to sell off a bunch of extras a.s.a.p. so our family can eat and pay bills.  If anyone should be feeling bad, it's me.  At least you only have yourself to worry about.

I have all of the coloring books/acitivity books from FiM. I love them and use them when I need a break at work.

As far as ponies go... I have weird quirks with collections. I'm currently collecting all G3 White Earth ponies with non-3D cutie marks...which may just become all G3 White Earth ponies but that's besies the point... In collecting these, 've purchased some MIB sets (which include other colored ponies) Then I decided on having a brightly colored collection to display, bought a bunch of ponies and now I want them all to be nautical/tropical themed. So I bought/traded for a whole bunch of ponies that now I don't know what to do with   Buh.

pony books are so much fun :D they're one of my favourite MLP items to find <3 don't feel bad at all, I found $1 MLP books with stickers and bought 7 of them! I did recently make a purchase I regretted, though- I bought all 3 sets of the new mini figure 3 packs....over $41.00 for 9 tiny little figures? Talk about feeling guilt.... I just returned them earlier this week ;^^ maybe I can find them on sale sometime.

Not anymore...

I used to look around my room after a serious binge of buying ponies, and think, "this could have been spent so much better".  Now I don't have the same type of disposable income anymore, so I think long and hard and question myself about three thousand times before I even get out the Visa.

I've got myself so well-trained to this line of thinking that I can talk myself out of just about anything....  pick up a G4 at TRU... think about being hungry... a G4 is a combo meal.... G4 goes back on the shelf.  Pick up a MH doll...  think about the $40 internet bill...  put the doll back on the shelf.

My real challenge is avoiding the thrift store because I CANNOT say no to a 2.99 bag full of G1 ponies that I can't just walk into a retail store and purchase.  But those are never "regret" purchases because I feel too great about "rescuing" the ponies.

So I guess I could say I have extreme problems with justifying current retail prices for anything.  Especially when I can think of 12 ways to invest the money better.
