Title: Family Dollar MH knock offs - Midnight Magic
Post by: amylynnamylynn on September 30, 2012, 12:11:17 PM
I'm not sure if this has been posted before, but I was in Family Dollar yesterday and stumbled upon these somewhat cute dolls.  I think the blue one is supposed to be Lagoona.  Sorry for the bad cell phone picture!

Here is the $5 question everyone is going to ask.... do their clothes/ shoes fit MH dolls? LOL. I haven't seen those yet, thanks for sharing

Aww...they have super cute packaging! Usually the packaging on these sorts of things is kind of horrifying, so this is refreshing. XD I love the long blue hair on the middle girl too.

Glad to see they are popping up at Family Dollar. Their clothes and shoes are a good fit for Nefera.

I like their light hearted expressions. A lot of MH dolls look so snobby or have bad attitudes. :(

They're actually really cute! If any one is willing to pick her up, I'd be very interested in the blue girl

I saw these at Roses! They were in a two pack though, the girl before and after the "transformation."  I took pics, but they didn't transfer to my new phone!

So do the clothes fit MH? I love that blue dress and the purple & gold outfit. I might have to go pick those up.

It's gonna be cheaper to buy those dolls for the clothes than buying actual MH clothes ( and I don't rate the actual MH outfits anyway, cheaply made and over priced :throw: )

These are actually cute for knock-offs. I think I'll have to look for them next time I go to Family Dollar.

Are they in the toys section or with the Halloween decorations?

Ours had all four in the Toys section - which was good, their Halloween section was nearly as small as the
Christmas one. Yes, they were back-to-back. They're made by the same folks who brought you Lovely Patsy,
queen of the blow-molded dollar-store dolls. But there's a website, midnight-magic.com, so at least they're trying !

I like how they're getting smart by making these fakies. XP

Sure they won't expect to make a lot of money because they are a complete knockoff of MH, but people who do have MH will buy them for their outfits to go with their MH dolls, I imagine that's how'd they expect to make "a lot". XD

Them "Look at our Monster girl dolls!"

Customers "Meh Whatever, they're not MH dolls."

Them "They have amazing, original outfits that come with these dolls!!........*Whispers* They also fit MH dolls perfectly!"

Customers "I'm still not interer...ested........I NEED  THEM NOW!!! "

My Family Dollar has them! I honestly didn't like the dolls that much when I saw them in person, but the clothes are pretty cute. They do look like they'd fit MH dolls pretty well.

I wonder how the hair on these would work for re-roots? I'd love to have a pony with the blue doll's hair...

Actually, both the shoes and the clothes are a bit big on yer standard MH ghoul. But it's easy to fudge that in photos, or move the cheaply sewn Velcro, snug in a seam, add a dart, etc. It's just that...the clothes are so cheaply made, it's hardly worth it. I am *far* from the best doll seamstress out there, bu t I'd rip out 90% of the seams and hems these ghouls have. They'll make you really appreciate Mattel doll clothes, that's fer sure. If you've ever wondered what your favorite MH outfit would look like on a bigger-busted doll, these ghouls are for you !

The dolls are not blow-molded - they have Barbie-like knee joints, but the really cheap kind, y'know ? I can't tell if their hands and arms pull out, there's no leaflet enclosed, and a couple quick tugs didn't dislodge anything. Rather hard to dress them in anything with sleeves, but we're all familiar with that little challenge. Their wrists and elbows and shoulders have about the same range of motion as an MH ghoul, which you have to admit is impressive in a doll that retails for five bucks. It's a little hard to get the boots on as-is, but I cut a back seam about halfway down, and it was much easier. The boots *are* nearly transparent blow-molds, and all four dolls have identical footwear, save for color.

You'd think I'd be more familiar with doll hair fibers after all these years, but I still don't know what these knockoffs have. It's very soft, and gloriously pretty. In the box, it's a tangled mess, but it brushes well with minimal shed. There's no real hairstyle besides 'ponytail', but the lavender doll with brown hair - Kayley - has so much hair, her head keeps tilting backwards. The luscious aqua girl - Mila - doesn't have as much, but it really is pretty. Pippa, the grey-skinned girl with black hair, has the least and the shortest, but it frames her well, and gives her a sort of Snow White look.

They all share the same head mold - no news there ! - with normal ears that are pierced, but they don't come with earrings. In fact, they have the clothes and boots they stand on the shelves with, and that's all. No stand, no brush, no leaflet. There's a story on the box back, and a code to play the online game with, but it says you need all four codes to access it.

I rather like them. They're just unusual enough to be fun, but cheap enough that I won't have any regrets buying them. Especially Pippa and Mila. I have a feeling Clawdeen isn't surrendering those boots any time soon, anyway.

Especially since the outfits fit Nefera and Mattel has yet to release any other outfits for Nefera's larger body.

Has anyone else been thinking of the ANTM competition and contestants each having to pull off one of these outfits?
I imagine to them it'd be like Paris Hilton getting a gala dress at walmart. The judges comments have a lot of funny potential :D

Anyways, yeah, I think I'll be getting these

If you're interested in getting some of these knockoff ghouls for yourself, Family Dollar has a website - familydollar.com (http://familydollar.com), natch ! - with a store locator, so you can see how close the nearest one to you is. I admit, I'd forgotten where ours was until AmyLynnAmyLynn posted that first photo !

There's even a coupon for $5. off a $25. purchase, so if you get all four, you can score some free candy or housecleaning stuff or underwear. Print the coupon before you go, ours never has 'em in the store.

Dolls aren't available online, unfortunately. But I'm sure the scalpers will eventually find these, too...(sigh)

I usually don't like fakies, but these are actually cute. Their lack of jointed knees *might* let me talk myself out of trying one...maybe.

I don't have any of the Midnight Magic dolls personally, so I'm going mostly by what others have said here.

Anyway,I'd say yes on Bratz, as Bratz clothes fit MH dolls pretty well and the MM clothes apparently fit MH. Not sure on Moxie Girlz, because I'm not very familiar with them, but if they're similar in size to Bratz I'd say they would fit.

Liv I doubt they'd fit; aren't Livs more along Barbie's size scale for clothes?

Oh! I forgot to add; not sure if this is just the store I was at, but I stopped into Family Dollar today and they toys on sale. Anything $5 and up was buy one, get one 50% off. I think that would apply to these dolls, if anyone's looking to get them cheap.
