I wanna start collect these little critters, but I have no idea which ones are rare, sa or htf. I wanna know about both G1s and G2s.

I don't know anything about G2s, but here are the more sought-after G1s:
-Pony 'n Pet Stable Playset (http://www.vintagelpscollector.com/Collections/ponynpet.htm) (only one known to exist!)
-Sparkling Pony Babies (http://www.vintagelpscollector.com/Collections/sparklingponies_babies.htm#1995: Sparkling Pony Babies) (the Li'l Brush & Grow Filly - aka Ruby - is very hard to find)
-Mommy Swan with Snuggling Babies (http://www.vintagelpscollector.com/Collections/countryfun_newbornfams.htm#Swans)
-Paw Print Club Pets (http://www.vintagelpscollector.com/Collections/mailorder.htm#1995: Paw Print Club)
There are many other rare/sought-after sets, but these are the ones that first jump to mind. The 1993 versions of the Cozy Home Pets (http://www.vintagelpscollector.com/Collections/cozyhome.htm#1993: Cozy Home Pets), Pet Presents (http://www.vintagelpscollector.com/Collections/petpresents.htm#1993: Pet Presents), and Ready to Go Pets (http://www.vintagelpscollector.com/Collections/readytogo92.htm#1993:Ready to Go Pets) tend to be more rare than the 1992 versions.
Most of the sets from 1995 and 1996 (http://www.vintagelpscollector.com/Collections/collectionyearmain.htm) (especially those from 1996) are more rare.

I'll approach this from a different angle.
The most common G2 LPS I've seen are dogs, cats, rabbits, and monkeys.
On the more rare side are the mail-in pets and special edition pets. I think there are also some convention pets.
