I have a lot of quiet moments when I'm stuck rocking/holding babies. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind, but I can't do a lot beyond thinking and reading the forum. So I was pondering a comment in a post about someone's version of a peacock and how everyone does one at some point. I know there are a few things many people do. Wondering what else everyone tends to do?

Well I haven't done any of those... but I tend to do Starry/Night/etc. themed ponies

ive done a ditzy doo,
and generation "re-makes"
seen ALOT of jack sparrow ponies , we can generalize that and say, "movie charaters"

I havn't made any of those yet... but have seen a lot of them. Butterfly will probably be one I do eventually, my mother collects butterflies.

According to a highly-studied and accurate statistic that I just made up, roughly 75% of customizers have done some variant on Mimic.

I might take the list as a challenge between swaps. I have ideas for a Last Unicorn and a phoenix. I doubt I'll ever make a zombie, I don't think I could. I'm not scared of gore, I just can't think on a gory level. Dunno how to explain it! ^^;
What about henna and tattoo ponies? Popular? :)

I would say Nightmare Moon too and Chrysalis at this point, as I saw many, but I never made those...I would like to try the Last Unicorn anyway one day

Ditzy Doo is the (in)famous grey pegasus with the bubbles cutie mark from the Friendship is Magic cartoon, mainly famous for being cross-eyed :). She was the 2012 SDCC pony if you want a better reference hehe.

Another popular one used to be generic swirls of paint. And then people wanted $30 for those customs and I thought they weren't worth ruining a pony for, especially a G1.

That's funny, I have a list of these that I call 'Ultimate Customs'. I'm trying to try all of them, I was amazed at how many I've tried so far. You added some I hadn't thought about.
I agree with HaveACrumpet, ponies as animals. I am hoping to do a kimono pony for my grandma this winter.
It would be fun to see a thread with everyone's kind of parade of all of the customs they've done from this list. Like a customizer sampler XD

I found my list and the only 'ultimate custom' we don't have listed is a dragon pony. I don't know that everyone does them, but I feel like most of the pros have done one :)

Oh hey, I'm one of those ones that make "generic swirl" customs. Have you ever tried to paint a straight line like that? It's not very easy. You also have to take into consideration Time and Material costs. I can't speak for other customisers here, but I use high quality artist acrylics, which are a lot more expensive than craft paint.
I guess until you do it yourself, you'll never quite understand, but maybe it's best to just not say anything if you don't have anything nice to say at all, ne? :)
And to stay on topic..how about converting ponies into different animals? I'm guilty as charged! haha!

Okay, finally got the list updated on page 1 again. That's a lot of 'ultimates'! I marked the ones I've done/am working on and the ones I'm interested in making. This will be a fun challenge!

Oh yeah and I paid twice that for an ImmortalPanda swirly custom and it was worth every penny.

Wow, that's a huge list! What are the asterisks for? Can I keep my list here for my own reference? I took a few off that I don't really want to do. Also what about gender-swapped ponies? Like making a Daddy Gusty or a boy pony from a girl mold?

I've done phoenix and butterfly... generation switch and a reverse and an adult to baby. Also one more I can't reveal yet.

That's quite a list, and I love this thread, because it kind of embodies the love everyone here has for ponies. It all comes from the same place, and apparently, it goes to the same place, too! :grouphug:
Pirate ponies: dunno if I've seen enough to qualify as an "everyone," but I've seen a lot of pirate ponies. Never get tired of 'em.
Real horse coat colors/breeds: I might also add this to the list. I see a lot of it, and it's a natural thing to want to try, especially after spending a while doing really stylized and done-up ponies.
ETA: Four seasons series: WHO DOES NOT LOVE THIS IDEA? :cool:
These are popular themes because they are all awesome ideas for a pony, and the funny (not so funny?) thing is that I will never, ever get tired of any of these, no matter how many I see. I could look at masquerade ponies literally all day and be so happy it's unbelievable. Peacock ponies? BRING 'EM. Got a cherry blossom pony? SHOW ME IT. Henna? HECK YEAH. Snow-themed Christmas ponies? NEVER OLD. :inlove:
We revisit these ideas, pretty much all of us, 'cause we love looking those things, and we all want a little piece of that magic to pass through our hands. Look how many of these have been themes for swaps!

Holidays (Halloween, fixing to add Christmas to that list, just need to finish up Halloween pony #2)
Got the peacock and henna ones done on one pony, so that's a twofer.
And there are a whole lot more on there that I have vague or not so vague plans for. I don't think there's a single thing on that list that I wouldn't be happy to attempt. Awfully tempting to just print that list out and make it a goal to fill it eventually! :biggrin:
