I went to a garage sale and picked up the pan with the instruction sheet & color inlay for $2! (And NO, I will NOT be selling it in the near future!!!!!)
Why does this often mistaken cake pan so often go so high when it is not "official" MLP merchandise?
This auction was actually one that ended reasonably low:

Ooooh, awesome find!!! How lucky! I so want one :D That auction is actually the cheapest I've seen them go for. They've sold for $50+ before. And yeah, it's not even official MLP  But I would make so many MLP cakes with it! :frolic: Great find!! Congrats!

because it's as close as one can get to an official MLP cake pan since there will never actually be one ... and really it looks EXACTLY like MLP and Wilton admitted it was supposed to be a MLP cake pan but hasbro backed out of the liscensing for some reason if i remember correctly ... but i mean come on ... they had carebears, garfield, sesame street, etc etc so on and so forth ... it was supposed to be an MLP item lol
i love mine *hugs hers tightly*

Great find and great price! I think I had this cake one year for a childhood birthday...

That makes sense- thanks for the insight!

It may go so high because there are people who collect cake pans, too, plus, of course you can still use it to make a MLP cake! I know I want one!
-
I really want my mom to find our copy of that cake tin... I remember MANY an awesome birthday cake made in it! Now that I'm getting closer to having kids... AND have neices who are pony crazy... it needs to be used again!
-
it wasn't available for very long, unlike most of their cake pans, so you have pony collectors and wilton collectors competing for it, lol!
-
There is an official mlp cake pan though. I have seen it MIB. Shouldn't collectors want the official one more? Maybe they do though. But you certainly don't need this pan for a mlp cake.
Juri has the official one, I believe.

I love this cake pan. I recently splurged and bought it. I haven't made a cake though...I think I am waiting to my next birthday.
I didn't know people collected cake pans...silly me!
-
What a score! That's cute. I'd use it:)
-
I would be interested in seeing photos of this official MLP cake pan!
-
I would love to get my hands on it. I have a Care Bear, Strawberry Shortcake, and a Wuzles wilton pan. All I need is the pony one.
-
I didnt' know there was an official one. I love Wilton pans! Its fun to make the shape cakes, but such a pain to star pipe those things!
-
Mmmmmm cake. I only have a Strawberry Shortcake pan! A pony pan would be all kinds of fun.
-
I have that pan! lots of fun to make ponies!
-
So cute! Congrats on the find Chip...and as others have said its so close to MLP in design, in fact it is essentially MLP design just not officially licensed, so thats going to make it popular. Plus it makes a pony "shaped" cake :)
The licensed cake mould was from Foods More Fun and the cake mould is square its just that there is an imprint of a pony on the base of the mould, along with the MLP logo, a countryside scene and a couple of balloons.

Whoa...it's worth that much?? My boyfriend found mine at a garage sale for 30 cents!!
-
That one is super cute, I have a cake mould that matches a bunch of party decorations - square with a princess pony on it I think?
-
Share your picture, Juri!! :frolic:

That actually ended low!

I didn't know it wasn't official MLP merchandise. Now I don't feel bad for using mine to make cakes instead of leaving it alone in the pony room. :-)

It's awesome! I want one.

Yes it was actually called "Precious Pony" rather than My Little Pony but all the fonts etc are straight from the Hasbro MLP book. I have the instructions around here somewhere...I ll see if I can find them and post them

I'm on the "Juri share your pic wagon!!!" :frolic: :awake:

$10-$25 is average for a retired wilton cake pan, depending on how popular the design is, and how long ago it was retired. I would say most of them for for $10-15, but the pony one often goes for more. And, finding them with the inlay sheet is pretty rare. I've also found that that particular pony pan went up when FiM came out, as I'd love to get my hands on it myself.
It's usually more about people with cake businesses, and those who want to make cakes for their kids, than it is about collectors (at least from what I've seen).

Our local high school had a junk in the trunk sale and there was one table that had 3 massive bags full of wilton cake pans.. I was boggled.. didn't know what to get,was thrilled to find the 'pony' pan and Strawberry shortcake pan. One woman went absolutely NuTZ over a Smurf pan cuz she wanted to make a cake for her son, since the movie came out Smurfs are popular again. Both my pans are used, but they look nice hanging on the wall together. :relaxed:
-
BTW, I'm totally :jealous: of everyone in this thread that has this pan, and how cheaply you've all found it for!

You can see mine here in this photo ^_^

Awww! I want that so bad!
now I have a craving for cake.....
-
Very neat find. I seem to rarely find anything mlp related at garage sales anymore. It's only some G3 ponies and usually people want too much. You're lucky!
-
Thats the one I was thinking off Juri!!! Its so cute - I think I have only ever seen it come up for sale a handful of times....gorgeous item to have in your collection.
-
I didn't know it wasn't official tbh! But it doesn't make it love it any less - it is the only pony shaped cake tin you can get.
This is the birthday cake I had for my 30th:-

awww, I wish it was cheaper... I'd love to make pony-shaped cakes for various occasions ^^
moonflower, that cake was lovely! the only problem with such cakes are that if they are so pretty you get to feel guilty to eath them...
-
Yeah now a seller has that pony pan listed on my local sales site for $80 because "that's what it sold for on Ebay!" *siiiiigh*
-
Thats a gorgeous looking cake moonflower :)
-
oh I have the Wilton Pony pan! It's hanging up on my kitchen wall above the Batman pan. I collect Willton pans but I only buy certain ones and only when I can get them cheep.
I managed to get my pony pan at goodwill after I scared a lady by doing a very Pinkie Pie like gasp and going " O M G! PONY!" yhea I have no shame

I know I've seen both the Wilton and the MLP one on UK eBay. Do they crop up more over here than in the USA? From what I can see the prices don't go nearly as insane as the USA.

The official cake tin pops up more often over here because the licensing company - Foods More Fun - is a UK company and the cake tin, along with a jelly mould and chocolate mould, were only released in the UK.

I don't know what it is about cake pans on ebay, but they seem to go for outrageous prices. I thought about getting an R2D2 for my boyfriend's birthday, then I saw the Buy-it-Nows and completed auctions, and I decided to make a pie instead.
