Last weekend my boyfriend Dave and I were walking back from a Friday dinner, and two blocks away from our house this friendly ally cat comes strolling on up to us begging for some pets. The first word out of my mouth was "Uh-Oh" because Dave and I really wanted a cat but the absentee landlord said no (but dogs are ok??). Dave really wants a lovey dovey cat and here is one circling his ankles. Without a word he picks her up and we run back to our house. We put her in the bathroom because its tiled and who knows what she has. She spends the night hiding under the tub.
The next morning we called the vet to see if we can bring her in. Dave makes the call and says we found a street cat last night. The receptionist cautiously asks if we plan to keep the cat ( I guess they get lots of animals dumped on them to the point where the city has made a law against it). Up to this point I am stupidly thinking that maybe we will bring her to a shelter. But in one word Dave single handedly impresses all the woman at the vets offices and voids our lease. "Yes," he says " we plan on keeping her."
So now we are pet owners. She is our first cat (as adults, we both grew up with animals). Other then a mild case of fleas the vet declared her healthy, without a micochip, and about a year old. And even better, the city of New York does a spay and release program, and it turns out she had been caught by it. Yay! Free spaying! Thats why she is missing the tip of her ear. They do it when they spay/neuter the ally cats.
She is so amazing! We named her Athena for the Greek Goddess of Wisdom because we dident have any when we took her home.
She is everything you could want in a cat. Well behaved, loving, and playful. All she wants is non stop petting. And she never uses her claws, even when we gave her a bath, and stuffed her into a box to bring her to the vet.
:lovey: :lovey:
We are in LOVE

-
What a pretty kitty! She's so cute, especially in that last picture! ♥
-
Oh my, she is beautiful. What a lucky kitty. I bet she will be spoiled rotten!
I too wonder what you will do about your landlord though. Are you just keeping her as an illegal pet?
-
She's pretty. She must have been somebody's cat recently or taken care of by somebody because cats do not socialize with people easily. Even by 4 weeks of age they will start to run away from people if they've never had contact with them.
-
Thanks everyone! We are sooooo happy with her. The vet and I agree that she was probably being fed and pet by the neighbor ladies. Alot of them put out food for the strays.
As far as the landlord goes we are not going to say anything. The people before us had a cat that she dident know about and the people who have lived upstairs for 20 years told us to just get one. The older lady next door has also agreeded to kitty sit if the landlord comes over, which so far has been once in the last two years.
I feel a bi guilty about the whole thing, but we wont be here more then a few years, so when we go I think we will have a service come in to deep clean.
we just cant get rid of her now. We are both in love and the vet said that 75% of animals that go to the shelter get put down. And I think Dave would rather move then say goodbye anyway.
On the bright side, when the Show Me Your Pet posts come up, I will have something to show!

Congrats! I love hearing stories like this!

Dawwww! I love cats, I sadly can't have them since my Mum is allergic. I play with my Fiancess cats all the time though.
You found yourself quite the cutie, I absolutely love the name too!
-
Aww so cute! Congrats on your wonderful new pet =]
-
Oh she is adorable, congrats on your new kitty!
It's amazing how many animals are out there, yet how many landlords say "no pets". I remember hubby years back having trouble finding an appropriate apartment (size/location/price) that also allowed pets.
-
What a charmer!
-
Wow what a lovely kitty! She sure is lucky to have found such a nice forever home :lovey:
They say that you don't really choose your cat, but the cat chooses you. That is, you can't force a cat to stay with you if they don't want to but if they choose you...you can't get rid of them XD. She definitely chose you guys and the cats that choose you are usually the best
-
She choose us, thats for sure. And as it turns out, she is quite the talker. Thanks everyone for all the kind words. I always enjoy hearing animal success stories so I thought I would share ours.
-
That's an absolutely gorgeous cat, congrats!
-
Awww your kitty is gorgeous and stunning photography too.
Congratulations
-
Cats totally choose their people  I'm fortunate enough to have been picked by a snowshoe siamese. When a kitty picks you, you just have no choice but to accept them into your life!
Good luck with the land lord. If they've only been there once in two years, I think you'll be okay ;) And Athena fits her so perfectly!
Congrats and welcome to kitty servitude ;)

She has blue, cream and white in her and the striped (mackerel) tabby pattern. I think the term 'blue torbie with white' would be the shortest 'correct' term used in US if the longer version is too long to remember.
Calico (which is only used in US) usually refers to a non-agouti cat (solid color cat, no pattern, has blotches of 3 colors: black/blue/chocolate/lilac/cinnamon/fawn, red/cream and white). Without white the coloring is called tortoiseshell (tortie). Torbie is a name for tortie tabbies in US (all of the colors mentioned with a tabby pattern).
