Many of the photos that some of the members generously share with the Arena are being used by others in various parts of the world wide web! Most often without credit and nearly always without asking permission. The trend mostly centers around new G4 pony merchandise you find in the stores.
We have changed Arena forum settings so that visitors (either unregistered or members who are not logged in) cannot see pictures. Perhaps this will cut down on the theft, but sadly, it won't stop fellow members from helping themselves.
We highly encourage the use of watermarks on your pictures. If you use Photobucket, I believe they have editing software that would allow you to put your name or screen name on the pictures.
PLEASE NOTE: As a side issue - the "hide image" setting caused the automatic image resizing function to stop working. So if you post a humongous picture, it will stay humongous. There is a very easy way to resize the picture yourself to make it smaller so it won't stretch the screen. It works like this:
Regular Way: (Normal image tag)
[img]http://mlparena.com/mlp/logo.gif[/img]
visitors can't see pics , please register or login
Better Way: (You put "width=600" in the first image tag)
[img width=600]http://mlparena.com/mlp/logo.gif[/img]
visitors can't see pics , please register or login
If you see a "last edited by [mod or admin]" in your post with no notes, most likely we were in there making your pictures smaller. But feel free to develop the habit yourself. Thanks for your attention in this matter.

 Thanks so much for taking care of us again SDS!

Great info Stomper!

Thank you!

Thank you for looking out for us!

Thanks Stomper for always taking good care of us!
It really does seem to be a huge issue anymore. I know I have gone on a few sites and was like hmmm....I have seen that picture somewhere before.

Relcelestia seems to be one who's images get heisted quite frequently. I've seen her tell-tale upside down cup all over the place lately. It's funny because I did a Google search of "My Little Pony Starry Wings" and I instantly spot StephBryant's tell-tale background, NoDivision's Barnacle, LilSparks' SW in the tree and holy smoke...my blue-haired SW and a bunch of my ponies!!
Thank you SDS for taking care of us!!
-
Thanks SDS! That's a great idea, and I hope it helps :) And I hope this post also brings the issue to the attention of those members who are taking pictures without asking.
-
Awesome! There's nothing worse than seeing your photo on ebay with another persons name watermarked on it.
-
 Thats why my pics were coming up like blimps while I was adding to my trade page. I got frustrated and gave up yesterday. Heehee! Good to know. Will try the watermark thing as well!
-
Yeesh! What a bunch of schmoes. LOL Thanks for all the info and great idea!
-
\ouo/ oh this is FANTASTIC news!
unfortunately the arena has always been a HUGE market for people taking my photos because they show up in image google search :(
Glad to know that hopefully this means that stops!
And just a tidbit of information: Google images does not automatically give you the right to take an image! All google images does is crawl the internet and reports the images it finds! MOST of these images are not available for public use!
SO PLEASE! DO NOT use images found on google, and PLEASE do not source "google" as where you found the image! look at the page google says it's from!
-
:tackleglomp: Thanks SDS! You are the best! Hopefully this will help keep the thieves from lifting everyone's pics!
-
This will certainly help with those images that show up on google since so many people just steal whatever they find there. Good to know how to resize it ourselves too, very informative! :)
-
Thanks, admin team, for protecting the Arena and its users!
-
Its gonna be a pain having to log in at uni if I just want to check something quickly but I understand you are just doing it to protect us.

I don't post pics very often (but I will probably do more so in the future now that I have a nicer camera). However, the thought of someone using my pics to sell their merchandise on Ebay is infuriating! IMHO using someone else's pics to sell a product is false advertisement, not to mention just outright stealing of someone else's work (their photographs). Its a shame this is becoming such a problem.
So Photobucket has an program that will automatically add watermarks to your pics? Forgive my ignorance, but where, and how? I don't use Photobucket that often, but I would like to figure out how to watermark my pics using Photobucket so some scammer doesn't reuse them on Ebay.
-
Thats horrible that people are stealing pictures and using them other places and worse taking credit for them. :(
Um, I was just wondering, if it's considered stealing only if you use the pictures elsewhere on the web? or if simple saving the picture to your computer is considered stealing it? I know I'll sometimes see a picture I really like and I'll save it to my computer to use as a desktop background or screen saver slid show. It never occurred to me that it might be considered stealing the image.

Yes, and it's pretty simple to use. All it takes is for you to upload your picture/pictures. Once it is uploaded there is the option to edit. Click edit, then click Advanced Editor, a window will pop up with your tool options. If you click the Big A it will take you into where you can type your text. Just type in your name or whatever title you are using for your pictures, you can also change the font, color, size etc. Click ok, save and you are good to go.
I hope that made sense

I'm not sure what the law officially says, sadly. I would imagine, however, it wouldn't be unethical to have the image on your private computer just for your own viewing. Maybe someone more knowledgeable could tell us.

First off, thank you mods

Hmmm I think generally you wouldn't get in trouble for saving a picture to your own PC for a desktop background or to look at when you want. However if you did that and then say tried to pass it off as yours or reuploaded it somewhere else you could get in trouble.
Hence why I keep my Photobucket as private now, especially for my art pieces. Never had anyone steal my stuff but Photobucket people seem to think is a 'free for all' sometimes.

I don't know about the legality, but I personally wouldn't be upset if someone saved my image to their computer for a background or screensaver. I'd only be bothered if they tried to claim it as theirs or repost it elsewhere without permission or credit. Even still, I'd prefer to be asked. I've had plenty of people ask me if they could use my images on DA and I almost always say yes. I know of at least 3 people who actually have one of my drawings as a tattoo.
So I'd still say you should ask, just to be polite.

Thanks for the info SDS!! :) I hope I don't see the photo I took for the Derby on ebay... >_<
-
I could move that Derby donation thread out of the public eye. :)

Thanks SDS! I'm currently in photography school and one of the biggest things we are talking about is protecting your rights to your photos so this hits home to me. The best thing though is that once you, the photographer, take that image and have it stored in your computer, that image is yours and you do have the copyright to it so you can request it be taken down from any website that is using it without your permission provided you can prove it is yours. The best thing to do is to embed your name and copyright info into the metadata of the photo if at all possible.

I don't think you'll get in a whole lot of trouble for keeping it on your personal computer as long as the person doesn't specifically say no downloading of this image. If I take images from online, I always make sure that I have the original owner's information attached to that photo somehow so that I know who it belongs to.
-
thanks for the post, SDS! I need to remember to do that with a lot of my images that don't already have the watermarks. However, if members start using watermarks, remember to put them on images where it's a little harder to edit the watermark out without someone knowing...
-
Tahnk you so much for looking out for us. I was wondering why the images weren't there until I logged it. I understand now, thank you for the clarification.
Thank you for the pointers on resizing too! I always forget the tags
-
Thanks for looking after us sds  what would we do without you!? Xx
-
Thank you! Ill start using watermarks, altough i dont have any G4 stuff. :)
-
Shaaaady! Thanks for the heads-up, SDS! ^_^ I had noticed a couple of my pictures coming out huge, but I figured it was a temporary glitch. I'll be sure to resize all future pics! :)

Yes, it makes sense! I was able to find and do this with a sample pic. Thanks for the help! I watermarked a sample pic for a test run and now I'm good to go (and I am really tempted to add the phrase "NOT FOR SALE ON EBAY" somewhere in the pic as well).
-
Thanks for protecting the Arena from this and also the good info on how to fix the big pics!
I'm glad you mods do such a great job
-
Bump :)

:hamster:

Up we go...

Ahhhhh sounds like I will be adding watermarks from now on! :( I like the "NOT FOR SALE ON EBAY" idea!

Or heck, even just adding "Not for sale." Several times in the past I've posted up pics of something, only to have people PM me about it asking to buy it. Nip it in the bud, so to speak.
-
I like the idea of watermarking with your username - its usually easy enough to id who it belongs to then :)
-
I'm going to have to remember those tags to make the images smaller. Mine always have to be resized.
*edit* Hmmmmmm.... I can't get it to work on a pic I just posted

[img width=600] picture here [/img]
There needs to be a space between img and width. No space between the equal sign, either side. Also, the "width" cannot be capitalized (I learned that yesterday).
-
Got it now! Thank you! :)
-
Excellent!

:bump:
-
Bump...and please remember to add the image tag for width when you are posting :)
