If you've seen this episode of Simpsons, you'll know what this is. The same doll is released as before but with a NEW HAT but girls want it just because of the hat. Hasbro has been doing the same thing with the Mane 6.
But I admit I have the Malibu Stacy Hat Syndrome. I see a cute little blue dress on Bridal Friends Rarity, and I WANT IT even though I already have a Rarity. Darn it, Hasbro. XD

(and swapped out Lulu Luck for Sweetie swirl, taped it back up expertly and gave it to my daughter, .. who loves Lulu and the set to this day! although some day she is going to figure it out. )

The only time I'd get duplicates is if it's one of those darn "exclusive pony ONLY comes in this set" things like Stardreams. >_<

I really dislike getting stuck with duplicates. I only get several versions of a character if i really like that character and if there is a big difference in pose/design. Some tinsel/glitter/dress/accessory is not a good enough reason for me to buy a duplicate. I wish they would start doing more interesting things with all these re-releases.

If the pony itself is different I don't mind (except the cutie mark being on a different side or bangs/no bangs) but like fun if I am going to buy the same pony again just because it comes with a cake.

*blush*. Um, I kind of want the bridle party Fluttershy for all of her nifty accessories. But in my defense, I don't own a Fluttershy with light pink hair. :)

uhm.. Genius Monster? :P I told myself if she ever mentions that she wants Sweetie Swirl that I'll give her her. Although I LOVE trying to preserve the packaging when I open Ponies (& Transformers), so it was fun that way.

I saw an excellent explanation somewhere, I think a comment on one of my posts, saying that in the Transformers fandom this happens, too. Kids don't always have the money (or the parents) to get all the toys in, say, wave 1 or the first toy line. But if little Sally wants to get Megatron and Bumblebee and Jazz and whoever else, if they keep re-releasing them, she'll still have the chance to get one of each "main" character.
So for people like us where money (or getting our parents' permission) isn't an issue, it can seem annoying that we keep seeing the same characters constantly coming out, but a kid somewhere is going to be happy that she'll still be able to get a playful pony Rarity after a year of waiting.

I feel the same! Each one is different *enough* to merit a re-buy! And although it's frustrating (HOW MANY RAINBOW DASHES DO I NEED ON ONE SHELF?!) at times, I can see the reasoning behind it. The cartoon is centered around the "Mane Six" - and kids wanna buy the toy of their favorite character! So it makes sense to keep the main characters coming back again and again, to ensure they'll be available.

I always get tempted by things like that, but I try my best not to buy duplicates unless i have a nice new home for them!

Lol, I'm kinda starting to feel like that. Not because of the accessories but the variants of the characters themselves. Like I have Fluttershy with darker pink hair, with lighter pink hair, with tinsel... Rainbow Dash with and without bangs... Sweetie Belle with 2 stripes of color in her mane and with 3... etc. I don't make a point to get these variants, they just come in playsets and whatnot and I can't seem to make myself get rid of them once I have them because they are *slightly* different in some way. :hmm:

I think its more just that there is a need to have the "main characters" always available - so that no matter the stage a child meets the cartoon, those core characters they will be interested in will be on shelves somewhere.
The cartoon sells the toys therefore if they want the "cartoon to sales" to work they need to have the characters available at all times.

You can always use duplicates as bait or you can sell them as bait. G4s aren't as nice to customize as G3s though, in my opinion.

Admittedly....every now and then I have a case of "Malibu Stacy Hat Syndrome" LOL. I try not to, but sometimes the accessories are too cute :P

I can't stand buying more than one type of item in any case.. While I think it is a good idea to have the mane ponies available to those who want them at any time, it drives me nuts that there are so many re-releases. >_< If there were only the same singles always available then we could have some more sets with new ponies..

I'm getting both Trixie's because one has a glittery symbol and one doesn't XD Also I want Bridle Fluttershy because she has lighter pink hair... even though I have 3 Fluttershys :drunk:

I wanted the Cheerilee picnic set because of her hat.
There's just something about that hat and Cheerilee. I don't know how to put it exactly, but it seems to scream out "caring teacher!" when it's on Cheerilee's head.

All other gens, I'm really good about only getting ponies. But with g4... I want all their little accessories and playsets! So buying sets for the playsets and accessories I'll also do in addition to the special edition ponies.

I got the Bridesmaid Fluttershy, but at list it was free when I bought talking Cadance at one of TRUs BOGO sales, so I couldn't feel TOO bad. Still, she's my third Fluttershy... This is getting rather silly.

I usually resist. I am much happier with the original product than re-releases, and I have no desire to have multiples of the same character. :) On occasion though I will fall for the hat. What I usually can't help is getting a play set because of a new character even if I don't want the playset.

I know! I need outfits to fill up the carousel boutique after all. :) I also like dressing up non-main 6 characters in outfits. Cherry pie looks really really beautiful in pinkie's dress. Starbeam twinkle is rocking rarity's dress, and no one but fluttershy looks good in her own dress!

I'm not one for buying the same G4 over and over again just because of an accessory or bit of tinsel/glitter and this seems to be something that my daughters are picking up on too as they would rather have a different pony or something from another toy line completely instead of another rerelease.
However as a mother of three pony loving girls rereleases aren't all that bad as they each have their own set of mane 6 which they can tell apart who's is who's by the tiny difference of bangs/hair shade/glitter/tinsel/pose. I understand Hasbro wanting the mane 6 available at all times but I think additional ponies need to be released along side too. Core7 almost killed ponies for my 8yr old and all three of them are opting for other things to spend their pocket money on with no alternative ponies for them to chose from.
