Hey, just wondering: How many unique G1 MLP are there? Including both international and US ponies (but not Nirvana variants of unique ponies)...
Anyone care to take a stab at it?
Extra credit:
Oh, and how many out of those are BBE and sea ponies? (both of those totaled)

Nice tally LBS! I am always amazed at how many unique G3s there are - G4 has a super long way to go although I didnt realise there were as many as 40 either!
The danger with numbers is the word "unique" - because are you considering Bow Tie in shy pose the same pony as the UK Collectors pose version or SS Wind Whistler the same pony as NSS Wind Whistler or even Baby Gusty BBE the same as the Euro version of her? If you do you may have to round down the G1s to closer to the 600-700 mark.

Just guesses from the last time the subject came up... :) I am counting different poses in international releases as unique, yes.

Its a pretty impressive number for a line - even considering the number of countries and the number of years it was about! I am sure we all once worked out a rough idea of number when we worked on the "Bow Tie is Bow Tie no matter her pose" angle...but I lol I cant find the old thread! :huh:

There's all the blindbags, fashion styles, some mane 6 with tinsel, shine brights. There are a lot. I counted my G4s, I have around 40.

if you counted the g4 blind bags alone theres more than 100 right there..its onto what wave 5? at 24 per set(admittedly some are re-pops that are the same)

I think the totals may refer to brushable characters only rather then including blind bags. I know for G1 numbers, I wouldnt include the pony charms as characters [although some of them would be super cute as brushables].

OK, and let me get this straight, if we were to count a character as a character - no matter how they are depicted (different pose,etc.) - and just count ONE applejack, and ONE bow tie, etc. - would the number then be something like 600-700? Because, although I love your numbers, LBS, I'd like to fool myself into believing that I can one day have them all. lol 600-700 is much easier number to fool myself with ;P

Yes, LBS tally is the better one - as something like BBE Baby Ribbon is a very different looking pony from the Play and Care Euro Baby Ribbon. But if we were to say ONE Baby Ribbon only [no matter where she is Euro or US] then the number comes down to 600-700...I honestly think it was about the 630-640 mark but I cant find the old post on the subject and I have searched lol! Its driving me crackers.

hahaha, absolutely :) Thankfully, I´m not interested in actively pursuing G2 and G4, but even so, I expect I´ll never have them all ^^

and this is EXACTLY why i simply hunt for ponys...im not going to try and catch em all cause i certainly cant afford to unless i get really lucky...ill grab the new stuff i want..and get lucky with grab bags and thrift stores and quick sales of small amounts of collection and just keep myself happy :silly:

I counted my G1, G3 and G4. I don't have all the ponies but I finally decided to count them when I saw this thread.
G1 (unique individual ponies) 651
I did not count petites or charms or bushwollies or the repeats of same pony like Regular gusty/Sosoft gusty, etc. I just counted it as one pony if I had it. This is also counting the unique Argentina ponies I have and all the unique Internationals I own.
G3 + G3 exclusives 339
G4 regular play line I have 19
Fashion Styles 8
Which brings my g4 to 27
This is not counting blind bags but I only have the first set right now
My total on ponies I have is 1017
If you added all the repeates or other ones I didn't count I'd have more since I have all the mommy charms for G1 and I have almost all the petites. i didn't count the fuzzy bunny, cat, doggie pets that came out but I have most of them to.

This is something I've always wondered aswell :P However I personaly wouldn't mind counting different versions of the same pony.
Because, even though I know it will never happen, I want to catch em' all ;)
Think the easiest way to get a somewhat accurate number would be to count the list on say MyLittleWiki or something like that would it not? If anyone could actually be botherd to do so xD

This is the question that has bugged me for years! It's always good to say to people that yes i may have a lot of ponies now, but it's only half of what was released...

I'll second that!! I think it's really 2 different questions. How many CHARACTERS for each gen, and how many PONY FIGURES for each gen? If it's characters then I think the 600-700 sounds about right. Figures, then LBS's estimate seems pretty good!

I do have MIB g4 as well, I counted the unboxed ones. I'll be getting the Gray wonder pony at the Fair.
I also didn't count the amazing bait cabinet full of abused and ponies needing TLC.
I hadn't counted in a while and went ahead and did it because someone is always asking the question how many do you have...now I have a number I can tell people, a little over 1,000 on the wall-O-Pony.

:biggrin: Fun thread! I really would like to own all the G1's, but don't want to have more than one of each character - UNLESS it's REALLY different looking (so soft versus NSS, etc) - but applejack in one pose versus another I don't care about, I just want to pick ONE - if that all makes sense. I DON'T want BBE, or Sea ponies. And I don't want ANY of the Sweetheart Sisters molded ponies, just the fat and stumpy G1s that I loved so much as a kid!
I wonder how many I would have still to go with that particular custom list to collect. Any stabs at that? :shocked:

Oh my, I thought I was doing well on my collection of about 470 G1s...looks like I have a very long way to go!
Just looking at the nirvana forum makes me drool, and my wallet shrivel in terror - this may be a quest for life!
This is a very interesting thread, it's a question I've asked myself periodically for 30 years!
