Title: Strange things pets do
Post by: NovelNerd on June 15, 2012, 11:25:03 PM
I was just curious about strange things your pets do. Here is one of my dogs that decided to crawl under a table and make a bed out of the laptop case. Oh the strange thing on his head is a sort of bandage thing. His face is hurt. >3<

Sandy goes to his food dish and gets a mouth full of food. Then he brings it to the dogs' sleeping area and spits it all out. Ok, normal so far, they all do that, but here comes the weird part. He then flips over onto his back on top of the food and wallows on it for a few minutes before eating it. He does this with every mouth full. It's too funny!

My beagle Chip likes to keep an eye on me while he eats to make sure I haven't disappeared.  He'll go in the kitchen, grab a bite of food, then race back in to the room where I am and eat his food there.  Rinse and repeat until he's finally done.

And when I play fetch with my pit bull Sadie, she doesn't just run after the toy.  Nope, she has to hop her way over to the toy like a jack rabbit, then bounce back to me!

I had a cat that would remove a piece of food with a paw, put it on the floor and eat it.  Repeat.  At some point he would change paws.  Ambipaw?

My cat sleeps in the cupboards. If I give my bird dyed pellet food, she'll grab the edge of the bowl and dump it. My dogs both sleep on their backs with their paws straight up in the air. My Pom rubs himself on clothes, couches and dog beds like a crazy pup. The mouse has hardware cloth over the top of his cage and he likes to grab on to it and hang upside down. My fish tries to do battle with his reflection. The bird will climb on the dog and hide beneath his fur. My rabbit tips over her litter box when I change the litter in it.  >_<

Yeah, we're strange here.

My girl Jack Russel will have food in her bowl ALL day. She will not touch it until we sit down to eat dinner, and the whole time we're eating, she'll grab ONE piece of food from her bowl at a time, carry it under the table, eat it as loud as possible, and then repeat until she's eaten everything in her bowl. It makes me laugh every time. XD

Ariel has an off button behind her ears.  Scratch her there, she rolls on her back and goes to sleep with all 4 feet in the air.  One time in mid roll, she fell off the bed.
Pixel much prefers to drink from a running tap.
Mark McGwire gives me a foot/calf massage every night.  If I move, he starts at the feet again.
Ozzie Smith bangs his head against the headboard.  Or your chest if you are not paying the proper amount of attention to him.

Oh where to begin, all my pets have their strange quirks.

Julie my little tortoiseshell cat likes to play fetch with sparkly pompoms and when ever I talk on the phone she's right there and thinks she has to join the conversation. LOL

My big black cat Romeo has a thing for anything rubber. If there is a rubber band anywhere in the house he will find it. When my moms nurses come over I have to lock Romeo up or else he goes nuts trying to crawl into the nurses bag to get at the rubber gloves. Just last week there was a new nurse that stopped by, when I walked into the livingroom there was Romeo with just his tail and back leg sticking out of that poor confused nurses bag. LOL

Then there is my cat Squeaker, he's a siamese /maincoon mix and has more issues then any cat I've ever meet. He is terrified of shoes! Is more attached to the dog then anyone else in the house. He's very vocal and has this little squeaky voice (he's a huge fluffy guy) he hoards metal! screws, safety pins, pennies anything he can get a hold of he will grab and make little piles of these objects under beds or behind the couch. And the oddest thing is he will crawl his whole big fluffy body into the toilet bowl and just sit there with just his eyes and ears peeking out over the seat. I can't tell you how many people he's startled LOL

And then there is Benny my golden retriever, who no matter how hard I try to teach him can not figure out the concept of fetch. I'll throw a ball for him and he takes off running in the opposite direction, and runs in a circle around me. Also, he will not eat when I'm gone. I free feed my animals (they have food down at all times to eat when they decide their hungry) He usually eats in the afternoon, but if I'm not home he will wait until I get home. Which makes me feel bad if I'm out late. :( as the second I get home he greets me, then runs to his food bowl to eat.

But thats what makes pets so great is they all have their own little personalities and quirks. :)

We have three dogs all of which are crazy.  Cookie the Pom has "duck time" every day.  My sister took her to the pet shop and Cookie chose blue duckie from all the toys there.  Usually when my sis gets back from work she'll grab duckie by the bottom, take him to bed, mouth it a bit, then sleep with her mouth gently clasping it's rear quarters. Cookie likes to roll, particularly in deer poop and she likes to eat Amber's if she gets the chance!

Amber my Sheltie likes to howl to certain theme tunes on the tele, mostly antique programmes.  That's pretty normal for a sheltie but what's funny is when Cookie joins in... she's not built to howl but she'll throw her head back and give a very throaty howl.  It's very funny :)  When they finish Amber will go over to her and make sure she's ok :)  They're also very close and if Cookie does something Amber will follow.

Gizmo will lie on the floor on his side, front paws together and swim.  It's like he's an otter!  He'll also flop on any available lap and roll onto his back with his legs in the air for tummy rubs, then he'll snore :p  Finally he likes to pleasure himself, I know dogs aren't supposed to do that for pleasure but looking at him he sure seems to enjoy it.

Awwww cute!  My cat liked to eat onions and raw potatoes.  And when she wanted to be picked up, she'd stand in front of you and rear up on her hind legs, raising her front legs, like a toddler.  XD

Gary is a mental little fluffball. He has been since he was tiny! His breeder said when he was a baby, he used to sit on the vaccuum cleaner when she was cleaning and ride around.

Recently he's taken to shaking himself like a dog. He doesn't even go out, so he's got no reason to. :') He likes sitting on the arm of the chair next to the computer room window and watching me. He gets quite hyperactive at times and ends up shooting around the house.

He's got a vendetta against a certain hearth rug (I don't like it either) and attacks it for minutes on end, then wears himself out and falls asleep.. and when he wakes he continues attacking it. XD Lately he's taken to sleeping on the kitchen floor on his favourite blanket and rolling around insanely. He wakes up when I go in to get my meds and throws himself at me. Sometimes, he'll chirrup randomly after looking at someone and run away. Bonkers.

He'll only sleep with a plush doll I gave him when he was a baby kitten. He hates other cats but he likes dogs.. he used to have a thing for the milkman too. Sometimes he'll even have little boxing matches with us :')

He also eats the most insane things. His current fave weird food is cupcakes, especially cherry ones.

our two tabbies want you to watch them eat in fact you have to sit there and pet them before they will eat.  Then they want you to make a fuss over them and they insist we get to bed at a certain hour.

Awww I love huggy cats like that. That reminds me of one of the things that endeared me to my late guinea pig Vixen. I'd open my arms and she'd climb into them just like a child wanting to be picked up. To get back on topic, one of Vixen's quirks (and she had many being a guinea pig) was a great love for the smell of chocolate even though she could never have any. One of the last nights she was alive, I had her on our old easy chair while I was making chocolate chip cookies. I came over with my dough covered hands and held them in front of her nose and slowly started pulling away and she about walked off the chair following the smell of the chocolate chips. XP She could be such a silly thing. I miss her.

Awww it seems like everyone has stories about their pets eating. Animals can be so very weird about food. I know with my dog he has a weird habit, but this one is actually  my fault. When he was younger I taught him to shake hands or give little high fives...nor not considering he lacks proper digits. I always gave him treats though, now when people eat he walks up and will put his paw up or smack them with his paw. Obviously he needs a treat!

Also he pees squatting. He is the only male dog I've had actually, so I'm not sure if that happens often. I dunno if he learned it from our girl dog or what. My mom says it comes from him living with a house full of women.

That's so funny! My little girl pup is just the opposite-- She tries to pee with one leg raised, like a boy, and often falls over or loses her balance. XD I think she picked it up from my older male dog.

Sarge the greyhound really was raised on the track. He enjoys sniffing and attempting to eat peoples cigarettes. He also enjoys licking the tops of adult beverage bottles (he does not do this at our house, we don't drink, but he'll do it at other people's houses!). He's a weirdo. He'll rush into the room the second you crinkle a plastic bag...
Oh, he thinks he's a lap dog... His head is the size of my lap!
After 7 years he finally learned how to sit last year.

Gizmo will pee like a girl too!  But he has bad knees so it might just be easier for him.  He will cock his leg to scent mark though.
Amber likes to rear up when she wants to be picked up, particularly when getting into the car, she'll stand just like a rearing so soft and wait to be picked up.

When I was working at a pet shop there was this lovely little guinea pig who'd sit in you hand and let you rub her nose, then she's "purr" and gently bite your hand, I don't really mean bite, it was more of a grooming back :)

epic win ^^ Back when I had cats that went outdoors they'd always bring me live food into my bedroom so that I could "entertain myself" hunting down for hours.. >.<

My cats do alot of silly stuff.
Xeraphina will sniff out ANY hairband and play with it and later on steal it and hide it. I have a small apartment and I still haven't found her stash.
Wiki will scream at nothing..always. She's extremely whiny and when she gets in heat I can't stand being around more than two days :P

My cat is scared to death of the sound of plastic bags. If you shake one near her, she'll take off running. However, she has been known to turn around and play with them even though they still rattle while she plays with them (fortunately this doesn't happen much. I don't like the rattle of plastic bags myself).

I could write a book about the stupid things my cats do.

Jupiter chases her tail.
If Slick gets upset he barfs.  He also gets in the bath with me.
Fuzzy gets lost going down the hall.  He won't come if you call him but will come if you call any of the others.
Ember snarls while eating.  She also likes to chew tape.
Flora wags her tail-nub like a dog.
Stevie puts her toys in the food dish and drowns them in the water bowl.

They also do this thing where they lick each others' butts while they're walking. We call it the cat centipede.

Onions are actually toxic to cats, so I proobbaaably wouldn't let her do that any more.  I love it when they rear up like little meerkats! So silly!

Sam does a lot of weird things. If you walk out of the bathroom or either bedroom and he sees you he will get all puffy then attack you.

He goes INSANE for beef jerky, if he even sees me touch the bag he will whine and cry and be all over me until he gets some. He's also picky about where he gets his water, his favorite places to drink are from my cup and the faucet, but he doesn't really understand the faucet and always ends up getting himself soaking wet.

If he hears me pull back the shower current he will run into the bathroom and demand face kisses until he is satisfied  :P

His favorite thing ever to play with is tissue paper, and he will hold it like a squirrel in his front paws and rip it to shreds.

We call it the cat centipede.

+1  :D

EDIT - Just remembered another thing Slick does.  Ember has a thing about water - she can't see any of the other cats drinking out of their bowl because then the water is contaminated or something and she'll refuse to drink it.  Same goes for if Stevie puts her toys in it and Ember sees it.  So Slick, being the jerk he is, waits til Em goes for a drink and then he gets a bite of food and drops it in the water bowl, just to see her get mad.  And if I scold him he just prances because, really, what am I going to do to him?

Slick also thinks he's a ladies' man and when we got Jupiter he excitedly brought her his favorite toy, expecting her to love him and play with him (as all the ladies do, naturally).  He was so upset when she hissed and popped him between the ears he vomited all over the bathroom.

Adding to what I mentioned about Gary's weird food habits, it just came to me that he eats everything I bake. And I mean everything.

Scones, cake, biscuits.. he'll eat it, no matter what it has in it. If mom bakes it or it's from a shop, he's seriously not interested. But when I'm cooking he usually hangs around, and after it's done he has to be the first one to taste the goodies. XD

Zeph & Ducky: Those are adorable pics! Your kitty looks like he has it made. Haha I think my dog would be too afraid to sleep on top of his cage.

MLP: What a lovely dog you have there. I completely understand my dogs freak if they hear the cabinet doors open. Speaking of animals off the track my old barrel horse was used for that before I got him.

Prince: That is super strange, but then again fruit is tasty. My sister babysat my dogs one time, and when I came back the two started following me around when I ate watermelon. She had fed them a lot of watermelon.

Bright: Haha your cat and my dog would have an interesting time. He wants all food items, and he actually attempts to climb into the oven when my wife cleans. ;---;

Eeee so many I don't think I can reply to them all. I can say today my dog was super strange. HE still has to wear a cone and he was running across the house rubbing his head against the floor. He ran the whole length of the living room with his cone against the carpet.

My Italian Greyhound, Skyler, has a lot of strange habits I've noticed but I think it's mainly due to his funny personality.
He does this thing where he'll climb onto your lap and put one front leg on either side of your neck and give you a hug lol He just sits there and lays his head a certain way because he wants kisses on his neck
He also does this weird thing when he goes swimming and is in shallow water, he tries to stand on his back legs and walk through it so he doesn't get as wet
Also, every time he wakes up in the morning he rolls around on his back for a while and nibbles at his nails. It's so cute but really weird at the same time

My dog likes her butt scratched.  Well, more like her lower back, right before the tail.  When Mom scratches it, she'll hold her head a certain way and have her ears pinned back.  If the scratching stops, she'll make these adorable whining noises. :3

My cat, on the other hand, is a total nutcase so she does a lot more.  If you pet her too much, she'll bite you but still rub against you and expose her belly to you.  She darts from room to room for no reason.  She won't play with cat toys, but she will play with hair ties, table legs, and ponies that are lying around (annoying as hell when working on a custom).  She gets extremely vocal and clingy at night, and her voice is really high-pitched and adorable.

My dog, Patch (border collie rough collie mix) loves to run around and play with us...he does the collie grin a lot, but most especially when he knows he's in trouble.  He'l come sit by whoever is getting onto him, and will just grin up at them...sometimes he looks up so much he'll tip himself over backwards.  It's hilarious!

He also liked to play, but he'll bounce around and run like a little cutting horse.  He's such a sweet baby...when he was barely 6 weeks old, he was so fat that if he fell over to one side or the other, he'd roll for a while.

So many adorable stories and pictures =)

I myself don't have a pet anymore since I'm allergic to animals (which is horrible since I love them so much). But my neighbour kindly took on our pets and she still has Picasso the Birma cat. And even though he is a little weirdo I just love him to bits. I borrow him whenever I can just to enjoy his company for short times.

And even though it's only for short times that I borrow him I do notice his little weird habbits :P

For example, last time I borrowed him we had a plant standing in the hallway that my grandma was supposed to get. Looked like a tiny palm tree sort of thing. And Picasso, beeing weird as he is, went straight over to it and started munching away on the leafs. I pulled him off it because I didn't want him eating the whole thing for two reasons: my grandma was supposed to get it, and I was worried that the plant would not be good for him. It's not really normal catfood :P
So I brought out some kitty candy for him instead to distract him. I put it right infront of him, he sniffed it, looked at me like I was insane and went straight back to the plant and started eating it again >.< By the time I gave him back to the neighbour pretty much the whole lower part of it had been trimmed down... lol. And that despite the fact that I kept pulling him off of it. But he was allright so no harm done other than to the plant :P
I told my neighbour about it and she told me he loves eating plants. So nowdays she only has plastic plants XD

Otherwise when he comes over he usually head for the bathroom, jumps into the bathtub and stares up at the tap, wanting us to turn it on. We usually do and he sits there in the bathtub drinking the water straight from the tap XD That we put out little bowls for him with food and water when he comes over he couldn't care less about.

He also used to be a little hellraiser. When my neighbour took over Picasso she also took over our collie dog Oliver. Oliver was such a sweety (unfortunatly he had to be put down 5 years ago). He was always kind to everyone - humans and animals. However Picasso loved to torture the poor dog. He used to lay behind corners and when Oliver walked passed he flipped his paw out and tripped Oliver XD Wish I had gotten that on camera :P

Can't wait to see what other weird things he does next time I bring him over :P

My Basset Hound follows me everywhere around the house. If he can not see me then he starts whining loudly. My bathroom door has no lock on it. So my basset hound will open the door unless I take him to the bathroom with me. xD My Basset Hound is scared of small dogs, babies, and kids bellow the age of five. Once a toddler tried petting him. He yelped put his tail between his legs, and ran away. He's such a goofball.
