The power of the bronies is strong.

This is from the Las Vegas Licensing Expo. Image from the Angry Otaku, and were posted on EqD (http://www.hasbro.com/mylittlepony/en_US/2012/06/mlp-licensing-expo-2012-images-from.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+EquestriaDaily+%28Equestria+Daily%29&utm_content=Google+Reader (http://www.hasbro.com/mylittlepony/en_US/2012/06/mlp-licensing-expo-2012-images-from.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+EquestriaDaily+%28Equestria+Daily%29&utm_content=Google+Reader)). I posted them all and discussed them on my blog, too (http://mlpg4merch.tumblr.com/post/25000416754/las-vegas-licensing-expo-pony (http://mlpg4merch.tumblr.com/post/25000416754/las-vegas-licensing-expo-pony))

So now she has a canon street name and stage name. I do hope she gets a ton of merch, she's great.

I still think she looks like a guy pony.  XD  I like the name Vinyl Scratch, myself.

I like the name Vinyl Scratch compared to DJ PON3. Vinyl Scratch just seems easier to say.

That's a nice looking poster.

I like the name Vinyl Scratch as her real name... Still think DJ P0N-3 should be her stage name, though (reminds me of deadmau5, who I adore. :P )
Anywhoo, she is definitely my favourite reoccurring background pony. ^.^ Such a cool design.

I really do like the names, regardless if bronies came up with it or not. :3 It's rather creative, fitting, and nice sounding. :D

Agreed. :) As soon as that Nightmare Moon set's available (which IIRC contains Vinyl Scratch), I'm gonna grab it (even if I'm broke by then and have to wait 'til Christmas for it. XD); Vinyl's a fairly unique background pony and I'm glad she and others like her are getting some attention.

Yeeeeeah, cuz that worked out so well last time! ;) I'm wondering why a big ol' company is suddenly bucking policy and is using names that they didn't come up with themselves - what happens if someone trademarks a "fandom" name before they do?

Too much fanon becoming canon these days for my tastes.

Well I guess she was always likely to get a name as she has a confirmed TRU release in the big collectors set and I much prefer Vinyl Scratch over the silly DJ pony thingie name :P! And it does seem a nice fitting name for her "career" not something completely Hasbro random.

They are picking up on the ponies adult fans like - Lyra, Trixie, Sunny Rays [if Bon Bon doesnt make an appearance in the next couple of waves I will be stunned!] etc - so perhaps it was inevitable that along with manufacturing the ponies that are popular they would simply run with the names fans are calling the self same ponies [especially on adult merch which is what this event was all about after all - no point manufacturing product for adult fans who call the pony Vinyl Scratch and then renaming her Musical Sparkle on the merch] . Lyra and Sunny Rays are fan sourced names as well arent they? I could be wrong on that though. Or maybe after 30 years and thousands of different ponies, Hasbro have simply run out of name ideas...

This. She was fine being DJ-P0N3 in canon. Though this is one of the few I don't mind that badly, since she was already made canon with a fanon name but it didn't really fit with Hasbro names.

I'm just sick of bronies and their fanon taking over MLP entirely. But if Hasbro wants to ignore all non-brony fans, fine with me. I'll ignore Hasbro's products. If my business doesn't matter to them, their products don't matter to me.

So they should come up with a different name just to mess with fans?  I'm confused on the outrage about it being a name that fans came up with.  It seems to me most of the names of background pony's names are voted on over at the MLP wiki which anyone could participate in.

Edit:  I'm also pretty sure that this merchandise is aimed at the "brony" audience so of course it is going to appeal to them with those fan-fav ponies.

I don't understand what everyone's upset about. Vinyl Scratch is a cool name to me, and unlike the unnamed-gray-pegasus, her name isn't offensive (or at least, I don't see anything wrong with it. :) )

I can understand being upset because bronies are getting attention from Hasbro.. it bothers me a bit too, but I figured whatever Hasbro does happens, we can't really do a whole lot about it.

All I know is, I'll definitely be getting that set that has Vinyl in it once it comes out x3

Post by: antlercat on June 13, 2012, 05:59:45 AM
I honestly don't get why it's such a bad thing that the fanon is being accounted for.
There's nothing wrong with the name Vinyl Scratch. It's cute, it fits the pony, and let's be honest, it's a very "pony-ish" name...

Like it or not: the "bronies" are bringing attention to My Little Pony in a big way, and they're being noticed more than they have in years. Surely having less to be excited about/less to collect would be worse than, oh, a name...?

Hmm. Sorry if this is short, but I truly do not see what the issue is. Yes, some fans can go to the extreme, but...is it really something to get so het up about?
Title: Re: Vinyl is here to stay!
Post by: Heliodor on June 13, 2012, 06:00:34 AM
I can't speak for all, but I think the dislike comes from brony fandom having sway over Hasbro when Hasbro has ignored collectors for years. I would not say the influence is especially good either. Many distressing things have occurred. I would like it better if Vinyl Scratch had her/his own name that was not copied & pasted from (sometimes not that great) fan sources. I can't think of good names easily, but there are many other possibilities. Hasbro could easily choose another name. This just panders to bronies once again. Why not some other name? I love this pony's design, so I will probably get a figure of her eventually, but the news doesn't please me.
Title: Re: Vinyl is here to stay!
Post by: antlercat on June 13, 2012, 06:03:25 AM
Okay, then I understand that - I wasn't aware of Hasbro's previous ignorance.
That said...they are a big company after all, and I guess they see that the Brony community, as it were, are willing to spend massive amounts of money on what they consider to be "their" ponies, so maybe that's why. They are a business after all :(

The name doesn't mean much to me, and I don't follow all those brony sites (nor do I get all this cannon stuff).

The reason I would buy him/her? Because everytime I see him/her it reminds me of Majesty!

Eugh, this is one of those fan names that I really don't like.  'Vinyl Scratch' is a phrase that make me think of a very specific, unpleasant, sound... You guessed it, someone dragging a needle across a record.  It just makes me shudder.  I don't want pony names to make me shudder.

considering the name randomizer that they have been using for the blindbags...id much rather see a well thought out FAN made name used since...lets face it this pony IS being made for the fans...but even if she wasnt..wouldnt it still be better from a buisness sense to use something everyone has either seen or hearfd than useing the name randomizer?

besides dj pon3 is not really something that works well....its a great stage name but not much beyond that

lol but scratching records is what modern dj's do..its about HOW they do it....

Agreed. I'm wishing Hasbro would at least think of their core customers- the true collectors- once more.
I thought the "core customers" were little girls...

IMO, I think it's great that they're using some of the names that the fans came up with.  It shows that they've got their finger on the pulse of the fans who are driving this direction of the merch.  It's not like there was a competing "collector" name for this pony, and they're choosing one group of adult fans over another group of adult fans.

Look at how many pony toys they're making.  How many of those have any sort of reference to the brony group?  Lyra, Vinyl Scratch, the Comic-Con pony... and that's about it.  Versus how many ponies are just plain ponies - aside from the Mane 6, the CMC, and Celestia, most of the brushable ponies don't even appear in the show.  I think they're giving something to *all* the fans of ponies.  Some for the bronies, and plenty for the collectors.

Yeah, that's what bugs me about this gen.  I don't know if Hasbro just doesn't want to mess with creating their own names, or what, but I really wish they'd stop with the "what bronies say becomes canon" thing.

I actually thought Vinyl Scratch *was* her Hasbro name and DJPON3 or whatever was the fanon moniker.  I think it's much more in the style of G1 naming...  especially if she possibly could come with accessories like have been mentioned above.

Yay,  the DJ Pony having a name is nice.

I have to wonder if legal issues could arise from Hasbro using fan names. Couldn't the original person who thought up "Vinyl Scratch" claim it was their idea and look to get some money from Hasbro?

I don't really see the big deal about Hasbro using brony-made names. -shrug- Then again I also like that certain grey pegasus's meme-based-name so I dunno... I certainly prefer the sound of "Vinyl Scratch" rather than "DJ PON-3." Sounds more pony-ish. And it's not like brony favorites are the only ponies being made, it's just a small portion out of all the non mane 6 ponies so it is fine with me. c:

I have to wonder if legal issues could arise from Hasbro using fan names. Couldn't the original person who thought up "Vinyl Scratch" claim it was their idea and look to get some money from Hasbro?

For argument's sake, let's pretend I first named her Vinyl Scratch. If I never filed copyright for the name, there's nothing I can do about it. But I can't copyright the name to that specific pony, since the pony was on the HUB's show. The design of the character wasn't created by me, so I can't copyright it.

But I COULD copyright the name Vinyl Scratch, but have that be the name of something completely different, like a clothe's line, or a website. That's why his name is Big McIntosh, not Big Mac.

G1 and G2 were before the internet, so the only tangible way to hear back from fans were via sales. G3 could be discussed online, but it didn't get as big as G4. Bronies are everywhere, and they brought MLP to a level it's never reached before. Bronies are a space between young children and adult collectors, and they're a new market.

Hasbro is taking advantage of this market (and the money it has) by doing the Collector's Line at TRU. If you're not a fan of the show, then the Collector's Line will have almost 0 meaning to you other then it's another toy to buy. TRU is also going to have the Pony Friends Forever line, which is just rereleases with accessories, which little kids and collectors who love accessories will go after.

Yes, it's a shame that Hasbro didn't work with collectors and give them a lot of products that were created just for them, but that's because times have changed. Consumers are much more likely to let companies know what they want, and companies are now much more likely to listen.

If you want to be heard (collectors), interact with Hasbro in ways other than buying their products. Share with their Facebook page what you're making, what toys you like. Create fan art and show the world that you love MLP as a collector. Hasbro can't hear you if you stay in only one small corner of the internet.

My only complaint with the name is it has too many consonants XD But using it makes things less confusing anyways because she's already been referred to by that name for months.

I don't understand how using a "brony" name is a huge affront to collectors though? Did all of the collectors come up with a different name for her that was ignored in favour of Vinyl Scratch?

It actually took me forever to realize that P0n3 was leet speak of Pony lol  I had been pronouncing it as "PON" (rhyming with "john" "Three."  :headsmack:  I'm not a fan of leet speak so I do like Vinyl Scratch better.  Makes me think of a DJ making the scratchy sounds on the records to fit in with the songs.  And also, to make an album, they have to scratch the grooves in.  : D

i see  alot of...grief between brony vs collector..and i dont see the issue..is it not possible to be both?

regardless as said above..you now have a comunity big enuf to actualy GET the attention of the high ups and get some things done....theres a point in here where sooner or later some colectors need to thank the brony comunity for not only getting the attention of the high ups but getting some of the toys made....like scratch, zecora lyra...i mean..i really dont get the complaints and mud slinging..so hasbro didnt name her...big deal..hasbro doesnt always come up with good names anyway lol

at the end of the day we all like the ponys right?..

would she be any less or more of a pony with any other name...for that matter would ANY of them be different all the way back to g1 if they had a different name,,might change your memorys a bit but its not like they took say applejack and renamed her to daisy duke(roll with me here) ..i mean..ok so they did sorta do that with suprise becomeing pinkie in a sense but.....

i guess what im getting at is its not like they had named a pony one thing and had to go back and change it for the fans..instead..they made a pony based on an image and gave it a name thats easily searched on the internet and fairly well known by the fans

Anyways, i'm ok with the name Vinyl Scratch. It seems more "pony-like" to me than DJ P0N-3. She is not one of my favorite characters (such a boring cutie mark) but i'm looking forward to her toy release.

I don't think anyone has commented on the brilliant Spinal Tap reference on the poster. Seriously, it's genius!

I don't mind Hasbro using fanon names as long as they weren't PERSUADED to do it, as was the case with :muffin: Pony (whom I personally call Ditzy Doo). Bronies shouldn't force Hasbro into doing anything, but if they actually make the choice to use the name, then I don't see a problem.
