Title: So... who were your first 'new' ponies?
Post by: Marlin on June 06, 2012, 10:12:01 PM
I was just having moment looking at a couple of my gals, and thinking how my collection had grown considerably over a reasonably short period of time. I started reflecting who were my first 'new' ponies.... meaning, when I started collecting, which were the first ponies I bought, adding to my childhood collection.

For me, I think it was Powder, who was in miserable shape when I got her but is gorgeous now   And then she was followed closely by a bulk lot I bought, in which I got Sunlight and Parasol, and NSS Whistler, NSS Buttons, and Baby Bowtie (I look back now and think, wow, didn't realise at the time what awesome ponies I had scored! And cheap, too). Fizzy was next, and it goes on from there!

So how about you? Who did you kick off your collecting with, be it getting back into ponies, or starting a totally new thing?  :) :) :)

I started customizing first (only a few), none of my childhood ponies remained due to little sisters :( I had some model horses but I hadn't thought about ponies in a long time. I LOOOOVED ponies as a kid. I had a herd of 22 at the biggest including My Pretty Pony I got for Christmas 1981 :)
I'm actually way more interested in getting the ponies I wanted as a kid, than the ones I had. My first 'collectible' I got was a g1 Barnacle. It actually wasn't that long ago either. Now I have quite the herd of boys growing and I finished restoring another childhood want: Gusty (but I made her in autumn colors). I REALLY wanted the big brother ponies as a kid, that's now the focus of my collection :)
And my whole family is hooked on FiM, so some of the new generation is finding it's way into my room, especially the blind bags.

Ooh, great thread! I started pony collecting by hunting in thrift stores, but I can't for the life of me remember which ponies were my first finds that way! Too long ago

Around the same time, I asked friends if they had any childhood ponies they'd want to come to live with mine  I was given SS Lofty, Skippity-Doo and Wind Whistler, as well as TE Galaxy and Fizzy--among others, but those girls are still super special to me.

My first "official" collector purchase was Happyglow, so my childhood Dazzleglow would have a buddy.

The first pony I bought to add to my childhood collection was Kimono.  I was just too excited to see ponies in the shops again.  The first G1 I bought as an adult was splasher, as I always wished I had a sea pony when I was a kid.

First pony I added was Pillow Talk, I found her at a thrift store when I was 18 and bought her because I'd never seen ponies anywhere since I was little.  I remember going to the toy store after finding her because I wanted more ponies, seeing the G2s and thinking to myself, those aren't ponies!  What have they done?!  It made me sad.  And when I discovered the MLP community back in 2000, the first pony I bought then was Goldilocks.  It was all down hill (for my bank account) from there.  :P  First G3 was Kimono, first G4, Cherry Pie.

I started collecting about a couple of months ago. From what I can remember, the first ponies I got for my collection (those who weren't an original part of my herd) were: Snowdrop, Lemondrop, Glory and Snowflake.

It was an impulse buy. This woman was selling them on an interent auction as one lot, and the auction had a "Buy It Now" option. So I chose that one. :-) The ponies themselves have a few flaws on them (especially Glory who doesn't have her symbols, needs to be rehaired and given a new tail), but I still think it was worth buying them all. :)

Mine was G4 Pinkie Pie, at the time I wasn't even thinking of collecting and just wanted a Pinkie to sit by my computer, since I love her so much :3

But then I decided I'd start collecting, joined the Arena, and not long later my collection grew.. xD

My first new pony when I started collecting again after childhood was Bowtie - she was my favourite as a kid and I had to have her again.
My collecting died down again until I saw Friendship is Magic, then I got my first new NEW pony, Fashion Style Rarity, as a gift from my boyfriend when we were holidaying in Gibraltar.
Such a pleasant surprise to find the toys there! :)

edit: Now I'm convinced that my first new ponies when I started collecting again were Fashion Style Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie, and maybe Playful Pony Rarity. They're the first three ponies to show up in my Flickr album when I searched. Pinkie Pie was probably chosen because at that time, I had amassed an army of three G3 Pinkie Pies, the last Pinkie Pie came two years prior iirc. Fluttershy was a classic case of love-at-first-sight.

I think my first was a plush Windy I got off of ebay around 1999 :)  I don't think I ever really stopped collecting hehe, but that plush is what started my online buying as an older collector :D

My first "new" pony after joining the Arena would be Applejack (G1). sunnydaze saw me mention how I liked AJ and her classic beauty and offered me one in exchange for my artwork. That was SOOO cool! :woot:

That's a great question, I'm not sure who kick started it. I want to say my Dad  brought me some from a thrift store and then I "discovered" ebay. Sometime in 1998  I want to say. Oh and the Yahoo auctions, anyone remember those? *lol*

For me it was not adding to a childhood collection since I no longer had my childhood G1s but starting pony collecting again with a new generation.
I bought all of the Mane 6 G4's in one go and that was the start of my collection.  ^.^

Mine were the 2003 ponies that came 2 in a pack? It was Sparkleworks, Minty, Starswirl, and Autumn Skye I think. :)

I can remember finding Braided Beauty in this little antique store in the old mall here. I never had any of the gimmick ponies as a kid and never really realized Hasbro did so many different things with ponies! I fell in love with B.B's colors and long hair and had to take her home. The sad thing is this store also had boy ponies I just didn't understand that they were boys back then (I only knew of Lucky) so I left them behind!

Hard to say since I never really stopped collecting them. I think the first one I got with the intent to collect and not play with was Fizzy, which my cousin gave me in the mid or late 90s because she has two of her. But I don't entirely remember now.

Well I've always had Streaky with me even though she wasn't always on display. And I am so excited to recover my little childhood herd at the end of the month when I go visit my hometown. I hope to do a brag thread when I get them all safely home!

The first pony I got was actually a few months ago. I'd been watching FiM and searching on eBay randomly one day for Fluttershys or Pinkie Pies, I was hit with nostalgia when I saw all those ponies I used to love watching on the show. Fizzy, a long time childhood favorite, was my first buy followed by Locket and Moondancer. My herd has grown considerably and I was surprised at how many G3 ponies I liked (beachy, tropical, ocean themed ones). I've also been working on getting the G1 ponies that were out before I was born. Streaky is my oldest pony and she's older than I am! Oddly, I still haven't gotten a Fluttershy or Pinkie Pie except for the blind bag Pinkie Pie. I'm sure sooner or later I will crack and buy one of the numerous Fashion Style Pinkies at Target. I can't decide which Fluttershy I like and I'm not really planning on getting multiples of any pony.

Oh! I love these kind of threads!!

I decided to start collecting back when MLP was re-introduced back in 2003. I cant recall exactly which one it was, since I was buying a whole bunch for both myself and my sister (who was seven at the time ... which was a perfect reason for me to come back into the pony world). But I would have to say it was one of those two packs, with Autumn Skye and Sparkle Works? mostly likely one of those two.

They were Stripes and Nectar...I wasn't collecting yet, but I was close.  I got them at a thrift shop and was going to sell them, but I couldn't bring myself to.  XD

I mostly just collected whatever I found at tag sales and flea markets, but the one I actively sought out was Applejack... I wanted that pony so badly as a kid but never got her (I didn't realize at the time that she was years out of date, LOL). The first ones I added that were flea market finds were a FF Blossom and Dainty Dahlia :) I'd never seen or heard of Perfume Puff ponies before that so I thought I had a serious frizz problem on my hands

The very first pony in my collection was Whizzer which I bought from eBay in 2005 - a pretty random choice considering that I did not own her or even know about the TE ponies as a kid!

I think it was when I bought medley for the first time. I then started going after just the first years. Honestly I never really realized I was going year by year. Though sometimes Im still random when I buy ponies.

The first addition to my childhood collection was Pony Bride - though I actually found her in a flea market years before I started properly collecting ponies, I guess I was 'feeling nostalgic' or something, and was happy to find something that reminds me of my childhood - and she only cost 50 cents anyway   :P
The first pony I got after I REALLY started collecting was Blossom, I think.
My first G4 pony was Blossomforth (gee, many blossoms) and promised myself it would be the only one... yeah right
I don't have a specific 'plan' as to what ponies I get... just what I can find and fancy at the moment basically

Hmmm...well when I was a child I got the first 6 MLP's (minty, bluebell, butterscotch, cotton candy, snuzzle, and blossom) along with Sundance and Baby Moondancer all for Christmas. I was 5 or 6 years old and they were the start to a huge collection that I unfortunately gave away. Good news is that I kept 11 of them including the first 6 above and baby moondancer.
As an adult the first pony I picked up that got me back into collecting was G4 Applejack :) Lets just say it has been an addiction ever since lol!

My first was a Pinkie Pie that a friend's sister got me as a gag gift-- that's what set off my collection as an adult. Shortly after, Pinkie was joined by a G3 Cotton Candy, another Pinkie Pie, and Sunny Daze that my mom got secondhand.

Then I decided I needed some of the old ponies and went on Ebay to buy the one pony who kicked me hard with nostalgia when I first saw her-- Glory.

It all spiraled out of control from there 8(

I got a job stocking shelves at K-Mart in 2004 I think it was. Everyone hated to stock toys because you had to manually price everything. I gladly did it though! :D I would stare at the G3s and it wasn't long before I bought my first one (Fluttershy) and that started me collecting :) My first G1s I bought shortly after I started officially collecting were Baby Glory, Baby Quackers, and the Christmas Baby :)

Hmmmm... Well, I got Sky Skimmer and the birthday magic set with Sundance and Light Heart when I was 13 as my new after-gen-one ponies, but I still played with those so I guess they don't count xD

As for internet, my first were baby North Star and so soft Paradise. Oh my goodness I was sooooo excited!!! I bought them from someone in the us and I remember calling my dad with joy that they had arrived xD I still have both, too. They're special, lol.

I found 3 G1 baby ponies at a Car Boot Sale, (Baby Bow Tie, Baby Apple Delight, and Baby Tiddleywinks), bought them so I could sell them on Ebay, brushed their manes and tales, and they looked up at me and smiled. So I dug out my childhood ponies and sticker album and stuff, and had childhood flashbacks. A short while later, I found Applejack, the one I wanted in childhood, on a market stall, and a collector I became.

I've always been picking them up without out thinking much about it.  I liked them a lot and didn't even know how much in love with them I was until I was given the chance to buy my best friend's childhood dolls/ponies.  I didn't even remember that she had that many ponies so the fact that there was some great ones in there was a surprise.  A few of them that I remember being in there was Minty (she's got pony pimples- so sad), Gusty, christmas baby stockings, and baby princess sparkles!  I also found one of the buggies lace trims that was used to hold her favorite barbie doll's hair braid in place! lol  I'm hoping one day the princess buggy will show up in their storage one day but it's a possibility that her sister might have donated it with some of her toys.  That baby Princess Sparkle really made me realize that I really do love My Little Ponies and I needed more (and more! and more! AND MORE! lol).

The first ponies I ever had were the Wonder Waves Surf Shop ponies. This included Strawberry Reef, Waterfire, Guava Lava, and Bow Tie. The first G1 pony I bought was found on the floor in a flea market. She is one of my very favorites, she is the 10th anniversary Birthday Pony. She is very special to me!

Uhm... all of them! I adored the show to pieces, but I never had childhood ponies. Baby Cherries Jubilee and the first set of rainbow ponies were the first ones I ever got, when I was 14 and had my own money.
