So i was just thinking about every time I talk to a non collector about ponies they always seem to think that Sea Ponies are super exotic and rare,
they get really excited to tell me they had one as a child LOL :P
so Im just wondering, what type of common ponies do you hear people bragging about having as a child?
-
I had a friend of mine bragging about their G1 BowTie to me. I just smiled and nodded. I didn't want to burst their bubble v.v
-
a friend was very exited to tell me once that she was pretty sure she had this pony still. amazing stuff. she'd never seen anything like it! pink! multicolored hair, and glittery umbrellas! can you believe?
i love parasol as much as the next girl, but this was hyped like she was the solution to cold fusion.
-
lol well they are '80's toys' so I think they probably assume they're all rare and hard to find.
-
I agree with the seaponies! I even thought they were rare when I first started (Mostly because I had never seen one before. I've three now, so It's sort of clued in they aren't as rare as I think. I also thought the same for newborn twins. It was like, ohmygosh, I have newborn twins. and then I got another set of newborns, and then another, and you know how it goes XD. So-Softs were the same result. Everytime I got something that was decidedly not 'usual' I got it in my head they were hard to find (Not that I was thinking they were really rare and worth a lot of money or anything).
My little sister used to think boy ponies were super rare, but I've explained to her that they are just sought after, is all.
I'm amused that when people find out you are collectors they brag to you about their childhood ponies~ I wish I could meet people like that.

Oh my gosh, this elderly woman in my neighborhood was having a "Treasure Sale". She does this a couple times a year, there are frequently many vintage toys to find there. I went to check it out and saw no ponies, so I told her what we were looking for and she goes, "I have some in storage, but they are the old ones that are worth money". She apparently thought the my 6 yr old and I were looking for 50 cent garage sale ponies. I told her I would be interested in them and she says, "I have one I think is rare. It has no legs and a round rump." I gave her an odd look because this did not ring a bell, the she say, "I think it's supposed to be a mermaid" A light went on and I told her, that it was a sea pony and many had been made. I didn't want to make her feel bad, but I also don't want her to charge me an arm and a leg when she finds it! I'm still waiting for her to find her pony stash and call me...not that I should buy more ponies. I find it somehow more exciting when I'm not buying them on the internet...
Sorry for the big ramble!

This is a great topic rel
A couple years ago I ran into an old girlfriend and told her that I got into collecting ponies. The first thing she says is "Omg...I have those really rare one's who's eyes open and shut." I was like Really? Wow!! I never did have the heart to tell her otherwise.

Well, it's possible it's one of the larger baby ponies, the so soft newborns I believe with the beddy bye eyes? That would be...kinda...rare? *decked with a fakie*

lol...so true but you would have to know this girl  ya know the type, everything I have is better than yours.

Hahah, what an amusing read :) I don't have any experience with people thinking their ponies are super rare, but i have myself as an example of the opposite situation. My G1 collection wasn't that big (less than 20) but most of them were Euro exclusive and I found out when I joined that I had some really rare/sought after ponies (such as reverse Baby Candy and Baby Snoozy with the bunny) but I would have never crossed my mind that any of my babies was anything special collection-wise :)

Oh I see!! ^^ Thank you for not hitting me with a rinse and spit! I knwo those types, I just kinda giggle to myself. Was just telling someone about it yesterday that I come across people who seem to think they have gold in old ponies when I could pay three bucks for thier common G1 in poor condition. I still feel bad. All ponies need love <3 Makes me wish people who were holding onto them for those reasons would let them go into a new home...like mine ^_^

A few years back on a breakfast TV show (This Morning) they had a piece on vintage collectables and ponies were on there. They actually had a few rare ponies on display; Ice Crystal, Nightlight and maybe others but they were telling viewers to 'look at the ponies feet and if it's got flat feet then it's a very rare, original pony!'. Facepalm...
So I bet there are a load of people in the UK that think that selling flat foot ponies will put their kids through college...
-
MIMIC! Sorry had to throw that one out there... :D
-
Since I Manage a vintage toy shop everyone comes in and does this! My fav one is when they go to the ponies and tell me 'I had all of them when I was a kid' I have to keep my mouth shut!
I had some guy come in with some common ponies for sale, he kicked off big time telling me I was trying to rip him off when I said they weren't worth much at all!
People just think if it's an Old toy it's worth lots of money. U guys think ponies are bad, seriously star wars is worse! Lol
-
I personally think G1 ponies are super rare and special! But that's because I adore them and I only have a few, plus it's really hard to find them around here ):
-
MIMIC! Sorry had to throw that one out there... :D
butbutbut...you mean she isn't hard to find? I bet you there is a huge storehouse of Mimics somewhere that need rescuing. Who's with me on finding them?
-
i always love people who advertise their auctions as havin a "super duper ultra rare when you see this pony youre gonna wet yourself mail order one of a kind its mold was made out of solid GOLD pony"
... then when you look...
its baby stockings...
the bane of my existance. =P
-
Unless she meant a spain piggy pony :lmao:

It could not be a seapony? That actually did make mermaids :)

According to an ebay auction a couple of years ago - Sundance...any one remember the $100,000 super rare Sundance?
However, I would agree "sea ponies" seem to have a popular misconception of being rare...that and any pony with tinsel in their hair!
-
Speaking of rare ponies, I totally had these SUPER RARE ponies when I was a kid... they had like... squiggly tails and ... sort of looked like sea horses? And you could put them in water. You guys know what I'm talking about? Probably not, because they're SO RARE! ;) :P
-
Peachy. According to eBay sellers!

I've never met anyone who still has/had MLPs IRL (other than fellow arena members), BUT
There was this flea market regular seller a few years ago who wanted $5 for very dirty common G1 ponies. She hadn't even bothered to clean them up and some even had DI (thrift store) stickers on them. When I would try to talk down the price she would tell me they were "very expensive" because they were so old.
I think when some people see adults interested in toys they think they can charge more

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who thinks this is the case.

Ugh there was was one bloke at a bootsale I went to...I saw a G3 Wysteria in really grotty condition. I picked her up thinking she would be great custom fodder, expecting him to say 25p or something. No, he wanted a fiver for her. Swore blind she was a super-duper really rare pony from the 1970s, one of the original ones; seriously I swear this bloke thought the poor pony could crap gold. Needless to say Wysteria got left behind!
-
I used to be under the impression that any pony with a fancier-than-average looking symbol or any markings on it's face/hooves was SUPA RARE. My boyfriend acquired a 2007 (I think?) McD's Pinkie and I was SURE it was worth a ton because it had markings on it's nose xD Same thing with the twice as fancy ponies.
In my defense, that was when I only payed attention to G4 ponies, and they haven't gotten any cool fancy looking lines yet.

I'm still learning about what's rare and what isn't, myself. Every time I see something I assume it isn't rare, because if I'm seeing it, it means there's a million of them out there. Ha ha!
I first started thinking TAF ponies were rare because they sell like hot cakes! But then I realized that they're not necessarily rare, just desired. Rare/Desired always throws me off!
-
I think perseption has a lot to do with it too, some ponies weren't relieved say in the uk, so we would view them as rare, and visa versa. Though with eBay and worldwide stuff it's not quite the same!
-
Peachy. According to eBay sellers!
This!
I saw an e-bay auction a couple months ago for a "Super Rare alternate coloured Snuzzle" and... It was Peachy. XD

LOL! now that'S a good way to market your ponies
-
I only think certain ponies are hard to find because I either can't find them when I'm looking for them or they are waaay too expensive!
-
I remember one flea market seller who swore up and down that all unicorns were the "males" and thus worth more. Needless to say had a great laugh over that one.
-
This thread is hilarious!! You guys are cracking me up ... alternate Snuzzle, LMAO!!! XD
My experiences around here? ALWAYS fakies!! People trying to convince me they're RARE My Little Ponies because their feet don't say Hasbro.
:lmao:

It takes a special kind of con artist to come up with that one.

These stories are funny! When I first started collecting G1s a few years ago, I thought baby applejack from the UK was rare. LOL.
-
I agree with Mimic, she's not any harder to find than many other ponies, just more sought after. Like a 'status' pony. She's easy spotted in heaps of lots of ebay.
And I know people that cottoned on to me collecting and showed me what they have. Maybe they expect me to want to buy them? One guy in Otago pulled some old ponies out of a box when I asked if he had any and I got them all for $15. So every time I went back he'd offer me fakies, g3s, ponyville, all for inflated prices! he didn't really know what he was selling, just thought it I'd paid for the others, he'd try it for these. Well, the $15 lot had a Mummy and baby Berrytown and a Mermaid among them so I figured we were even.
-
hahahaha, tiggums, your signature is hilarious and sooo true! I've made some mistakes that way >_<
Post Merge: June 01, 2012, 06:02:11 PM
icecrystaline- I did not know that they made actual mermaids! Exciting. Maybe she has one :P
And now I am doing the very thing that Tiggums warns against >_< . Re-ment is so awesomely cute tho!
-
well rainbowstars, I did get me a MO Mommy pony for the princely sum of $200....that was nice to wake up to...

How about *every* pony auction I see lately is listed as "super rare". I saw one for a vintage rare G3.5 Pinkie Pie....LOL!
-
Yep, ebay keeps getting funnier and funnier. I guess people think if they put "Rare" in the title, it will sell.
-
I think one of my favourites is ponies whose symbols have simply worn away XD RARE NO SYMBOL PONIES!
There was once a seller who tried to convince me that her Bowtie was rare because it had a fabric tail. I tried to point out that it was probably donated by another toy, but she was having absolutely none of it.
-
I had the blank white baby pony. I actually even drew on her (thankfully it washed completely off). I also had mail order star hopper.
-

Did you point out that this 'super-duper really rare pony from the 1970s' had a stamp on her hoof listed 2002?
-
Ugh...sea ponies. Cannot get over this enough. True, year 3 sea ponies are up there in value, but I responded to a Craigslist ad one time and looked through this girls ponies. She had tons of nice G1's and wanted $2 a piece. I sorted through a few and pulled out what I wanted (passed on McD ponies and BBE's). I went to pay and she said that she had a super rare pony that she was saving for ebay - and she pulls out a Sealight. >< She said she was watching ebay and this pony was sure to fetch her at least $200. Oh my...
And so I walked away with a minty set of SS Sundance and Megan (fully clothed) and a *mint* SS Angel and SS Bangles with a couple of other ponies. Yup - I paid $15ish total.
-
In all honesty, all G1s are rare and hard to find to me because I can't ever find any. =p
-
Oh ive made many many moments like this! Its worse when you go a carboot/market and ANY toy that is in a plastic bag...somehow doubles the value  , I knew a toy dealer that had all her toys loose is different boxes and were £1 each.....then one week every toy was bagged up and she was charging £3  .
Ive given up trying to tell people on eBay as they just get very offended thinking im trying to scam them......there is one person at the moment who is selling all her G1s at £40 each....including poor old peachy

You should have asked her if the bags were available for a separate purchase of £2 each. :silly:

Hahaha, sorry, that reminded me, a few weeks ago someone here in iceland posted a pic showing that jars with (I think) jam in them were actually cheaper than buying empty jars of same capacity! It was ridiculous :P guess they went to the same school of economics as that boot market seller :P

Some of these are so pathetic, it's kind of sad!! I'm not sure if I should be crying on the inside or laughing, but I am doing a lot of both while reading these!
